Ryanair staff to extend Spain strike by 12 days

Ryanair staff
  • EasyJet and Ryanair cabin crew strike causes 15 flights to and from Spain to be cancelled.
  • 175 flights delayed, of which 123 Ryanair and 52 EasyJet, unions say.
  • Strikes over pay and working conditions began as European schools began to close for the summer.

EasyJet and Ryanair staff strikes caused 15 flights to and from Spain to be cancelled and 175 others to be delayed on Saturday, as the Irish airline announced 12 more days of stoppages.

The strike at the two low-cost airlines over pay and working conditions began as European schools began to close for the summer, causing problems for both vacationers and the aviation industry.

By 1:00 pm (1100 GMT) on Saturday, 10 Ryanair and five EasyJet flights had been cancelled and 175 flights delayed, of which 123 Ryanair and 52 EasyJet, unions said in a statement.

The series of rolling strikes by Ryanair cabin crew in Spain — where there are some 1,900 employees — began on June 24, with EasyJet staff joining on Friday.

Ryanair’s USO union rep said the new stoppages would take place in three four-day stretches: July 12 to 15, July 18 to 21, and July 25 to 28 at the 10 Spanish airports where Ryanair operates.

“After six days of strike and in view of the unwillingness of the company to listen to its staff and its preference for leaving thousands of passengers grounded rather than sitting down to negotiate an agreement under Spanish law, we have been forced to call new strike days,” said USO’s Lidia Arasanz.

Pro-Russia rebels claim to ‘encircle’ key city, Ukraine denies

Pro-Russia
  • Lysychansk is the last major city in Ukraine’s Lugansk region.
  • It is located across the river from neighbouring Severodonetsk, which Russia seized last week.
  •  UNESCO has inscribed Ukraine’s tradition of cooking borshch soup on its endangered cultural heritage list.

Fighting raged Saturday for Ukraine’s strategically important Lysychansk, as Kiev denied that Moscow-backed Pro-Russia had encircled the eastern city.

Clashes have been intense in Lysychansk, the last major city in Ukraine’s Lugansk region, located across the river from neighbouring Severodonetsk, which Russia seized last week.

The city’s capture would allow Russian forces to push deeper into the battleground Donbas region, which has become the focus of their offensive since failing to capture Kyiv after invading in late February.

“Fighting rages around Lysychansk… The city has not been encircled and is under control of the Ukrainian army,” Ruslan Muzytchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian National Guard, said on Ukrainian television.

Earlier in the day, Andrei Marotchko, a spokesman for the separatist forces, told the TASS news agency: “Lysychansk is completely encircled.”

The announcements come as missiles continue to rain down across Ukraine, killing dozens.

Germany signs deal to return Benin bronzes to Nigeria

Benin bronzes
  • Germany has around 1,100 of the 16th- to 18th-century artefacts, split between some 20 museums.
  • Thousands of Benin bronzes are scattered around European museums after being looted by the British.
  • Nigeria plans to build a museum in Benin City in southern Edo state, where it hopes to house them.

Germany signed an agreement on Friday,  to begin sending hundreds of Benin bronzes back to what is now Nigeria, marking the most significant effort by a European country to return the looted artworks.

After Germany announced last year that it would begin returning the bronzes, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Culture Minister Claudia Roth signed the agreement with their Nigerian counterparts in Berlin.

The first two artworks — the head of a king and a plaque depicting three warriors — were on Friday handed over to representatives from Nigeria.

“Today we have reason to celebrate, because we have reached a historic agreement — the Benin bronzes are returning home,” Baerbock said.

“These pieces are not only magnificent artefacts — they are some of Africa’s greatest treasures. But they are also telling a story of colonial violence,” she said.

Thousands of Benin bronzes, metal plaques and sculptures that once decorated the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin are now scattered around European museums after being looted by the British at the end of the 19th century.

Joe Biden says US ‘should sell’ F-16s to Turkey

Joe Biden
  • Turkey surprised NATO members by suddenly dropping opposition to Finland and Sweden joining the alliance.
  • Turkey is an important NATO member in a strategically sensitive location, but it has had often tense relations with its European partners.
  • A plan to equip Turkey with state-of-the-art US F-35 stealth fighters fell through after Turkey bought Russia’s S-400 anti-aircraft missile system.

President Joe Biden on Thursday said the United States should go ahead with the delayed sale of F-16 warplanes to Turkey but noted that Congress needs to give approval.

“We should sell them the F-16 jets and modernize those jets as well,” Biden said, adding there was “no quid pro quo” linking the sale to Turkey’s approval for Finland and Sweden entering NATO.

Biden added that for the sale, “I need congressional approval to do that and I think I can do that”.

The declaration of support from Biden comes after Turkey surprised fellow NATO members at a summit in Madrid by suddenly dropping weeks of opposition to the Finland and Sweden applications to join the alliance.

Unanimous consent by NATO members is required for enlargement.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would send a delegation to the United States “without delay” to convince lawmakers to swiftly approve the sale.

“It’s necessary to get support from both Democrats and Republicans. Despite all this, Mr Biden is confident. I hope that we will get a result that fits our friendship and solidarity,” Erdogan told a news conference in Madrid.

Turkey is an important NATO member in a strategically sensitive location, but it has had often tense relations with its European partners and Washington, which is the alliance’s main military force.

“In politics, yesterday was yesterday, today is today,” Erdogan said.

“In politics, a lot can change in 24 hours… There were good days and bad days but Turkish-US relations have continued,” he said.

A plan to equip Turkey with state-of-the-art US F-35 stealth fighters fell through after Turkey bought Russia’s S-400 anti-aircraft missile system.

Washington saw Ankara’s purchase as potentially threatening the security of the F-35 program.

Turkey then set out to purchase new F-16s as well as upgrade its existing but outdated fleet of the same planes.

However, that agreement is also on hold, and there has been speculation that Turkey is delaying the two northern European countries’ NATO accession bids in order to gain concessions.
