Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has assures that federal development projects currently underway in Sindh province will be expedited for a swift completion.

In a recent high-level meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, the two leaders discussed key issues concerning the Sindh province, Furthermore, they also analyzed and exchanged views on the prevailing political situation of the country was touched upon.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah briefed Prime Minister Sharif on the Sindh government’s apprehensions about the digital census initiative. In response, The Prime Minister assured him that these concerns would be addressed.

Emphasizing the importance of collaboration, PM Shahbaz Sharif stated that federal and provincial governments must come together for the people’s well-being. He also highlighted the Thar Coal Project’s potential to cater to the nation’s energy demands while spurring local development.

Notably, Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Sardar Ayaz Sadiq was also present during the talks.

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stressed the significance of a comprehensive census as a national responsibility and said that “I want all the people to be counted regularly in the census because it is a national duty.”

Chief Minister Shah urged commissioners and deputy commissioners to ensure accurate data collection during the digital census, using tablets to input information. He instructed the authorities to intensify awareness campaigns and verify the count of households and residents at the village level.

Cold wave spell likely to continue in Karachi till Jan 29

KARACHI: Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) predicted that the cold wave is likely to continue across Sindh including Karachi till January 29.

PMD Karachi Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz said the lowest temperature in Karachi was recorded at 7 degrees Celsius. The northeastern winds blowing in the city with a wind speed of 14 kilometers per hour, he added.

He said that cold and dry weather is likely to prevail in the city for the next couple of days, while another cold wave is expected in the city in the first week of February.

He further said that another westerly wave is likely to enter Balochistan on Jan 28 which will bring rain/snowfall in parts of Balochistan.

On the other hand, cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the country, while very cold in upper parts and north Balochistan during the next twelve hours.

Rain with snow may occur at isolated places in Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan.

Fog is likely to occur in a few plain areas of Punjab.

Health Minister Sindh reviews preparedness of anti-polio drive

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Health and Population Welfare Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho held a meeting with DCs and DHOs of Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Mirpurkhas Division through an online meeting video link to reviews preparedness of anti-polio campaign.

Last year there were 20 cases of wild polio all reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhawa. In Sindh, there have been no cases of Polio since 2021 and the last reported case of Polio in Sindh was on the 14th of July, 2020. There was one environmental sample found in Karachi in all of 2022, and that was in Malir-Landhi, at Bakhtawar Goth.

For the 2023 readiness plan, there has been a quality assessment that achieved a 92 percent score at Khairpur, Sukkur, Kashmore, Larkana, and Umerkot. Supervisory trainings were completed in all 14 districts and 92 percent of team training was also completed. Districts also received logistics items and vaccines were distributed to divisional stores.

There were also special guidelines for consideration in the National Immunisation Days in 2023 that include special monitoring and supervision of riverine and desert areas. There needs to be the facilitation of teams and supervisors to reach the displaced population that is still surrounded by flood water.

In addition, it should be ensured that 100 percent of the mapping is completed that covers IDP, HRMP, and Agricultural Laborers and also that it identifies seasonally migrating populations and their vaccination status.

Post-campaign planning and tracking of missed children should be continued and it should be recorded with standardized finger marking using the specific ink that is used province-wide for polio vaccination.

KARACHI: Health Minister Sindh Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho met with representatives of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to discuss gender equality and empowerment in the province, in regard to health.

The meeting was attended by Dr Anita Zaidi President, Gender Equality Division, BMGF, Ms. Gwyn Hainsworth Senior Program Officer, Family Planning BMGF, Dr Yasmeen Qazi Senior Country Advisor, BMGF, Secretary Population Welfare, Rehan Baloch, and Technical Advisor Population Welfare, Dr Talib Lashari

Minister of Health and Population Welfare, Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho said that education is the most important factor in a person’s development. Unless women are educated, their health will not improve since education is tied to everything.

“Better and more advanced education ensures that the girls learn about hygiene, and how to care for self and the community, it will enable a delay in their marriage so they are not being impregnated while they are still children which in turn results in healthier babies, spacing between pregnancies, so healthy mothers, better economic systems for her family and the list goes on” she added.

Dr Azra added that the Sindh Health Department is also focusing on deworming and treating anemia in girls and women to reduce malnutrition in them and their children. There is also work being done to bring life skills and self-care into their education and for this purpose, there are community midwives available 24/7 in each district who aside from facilitating safe deliveries, are also trained to be community workers. They do house calls for new mothers and help identify any health or hygiene concerns. This includes help with breastfeeding, postpartum, and postnatal care and in general keeping an eye out for how new mothers are adjusting. A pilot project of this work is implemented in nine centers in Tharparkar.

She said service delivery and communication strategy are very important for the work on women’s overall health
as this includes marriage counselling, family planning, early child development, and reproductive health rights.

KARACHI: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the country, while very cold in upper parts during the next 12 hours.

According to the PMD, rain and light snow over the mountains is expected at isolated places in north and western Balochistan.

Dense foggy conditions are likely to continue over plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and upper Sindh. Frost with fog is likely to occur at isolated places in Pothohar region and Kashmir during morning hours.
