ISLAMABAD:  Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Tassaduq Hussain Jillani has refused for chairing  the inquiry commission on the letter issue of six judges of Islamabad High Court(IHC).

Justice (Retd) Tassaduq Hussain Jillani wrote a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and refused for chairing the commission.

In the letter, the former Chief Justice thanked the Prime Minister, Cabinet, Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah.

Talking to the media , Justice (retd) Tassaduq Jilani said that he had reservations about the Terms of Reference (TOR) of the Commission.  The judges had addressed the Supreme Judicial Council in their letter, therefore, in his opinion, the Commission is not the proper forum for inquiry.

He also said that the allegations made in the letter are not mentioned in the terms of reference and the letter does not come under the ambit of parameter 209.

It should be noted that two days ago, the Federal Cabinet approved the appointment of Justice (R) Tassaduq Hussain Jillani as the head of the inquiry commission on the issue of the letter of the judges of the Islamabad High Court.

PM calls for further enhancing bilateral cooperation with Russia

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif while noting the historic cordial ties between Pakistan and Russia, said that Pakistan wanted to enhance bilateral cooperation with Russia in a number of areas particularly in energy, trade and investment.

The prime minister expressed deep condolences on the loss of precious lives in the Crocus City Hall attack outside Moscow last week and said Pakistan stood in solidarity with Russia at this tragic hour.

The prime minister expressed these views during a meeting with Ambassador of the Russian Federation Albert P. Khorev who called on him. The prime minister stressed the need for early convening of the 9th session of the Inter-governmental Commission (IGC), due to be hosted by Russia later this year.

He also urged the Russian side to send a delegation to Pakistan to hold discussions with their counterparts to identify ways to enhance the existing level of trade and investment ties between the two countries.

While fondly recalling their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Samarkand in 2022, the prime minister reiterated his invitation to President Putin to undertake an official visit to Pakistan at his earliest convenience.

Federal Govt reconstitutes ECL committee of cabinet

ISLAMABAD: The federal government reconstituted the Exit Control List (ECL) committee of the cabinet.

It has been decided not to give the headship of the ECL committee to any federal minister.

The Prime Minister  Shehbaz Sharif will head the ECL Committee of the Cabinet himself, while the Ministry of Interior will provide secretarial support to the committee. The Interior Minister was not included in the ECL Committee.

The Cabinet Division has also issued a notification for the reconstitution of the 4-member ECL Committee.

According to the notification, the ECL committee will also include the Minister of Law, Minister of Industries and Production and Minister of Human Resources.

In the absence of the Prime Minister, the Law Minister will head the committee.

The ECL cases will be examined in ECL sub-committee.

ISLAMABAD:  Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed to conduct a thorough joint investigation of the Besham terrorist attack on Chinese nationals working on Dassu Hydel Power Project, utilizing all resources of the state.

The prime minister, offering deepest condolences to the families of the innocent victims of the attack assured that the perpetrators of this barbaric act would be brought to justice swiftly.

Chairing a high level emergency meeting in the aftermath of Besham terrorist attack on Chinese nationals, the prime minister appreciated the alacrity with which law enforcement agencies and locals responded to the attack, saving many precious lives which could have been lost.

The meeting was attended by the Federal Ministers, Chief of the Army Staff, Chief Ministers, Chief Secretaries and Inspector Generals of Police of respective provinces. The meeting discussed in detail the heinous attack on innocent civilians working on a development project, meant to contribute to energy and water security of Pakistan.

Prime Minister underscored the enduring bond of brotherhood between the people of Pakistan and China and conveyed that the whole nation was saddened by the loss of Chinese lives. He stated, “Terrorism is a trans-national threat that has been instrumentalized by the enemies of Pakistan to stymie Pakistan’s progress and development.

The acts targeting Pakistan-China friendship are particularly aimed at creating mistrust between the two iron brothers”. Participants of the meeting expressed resolute commitment to completely rooting out terrorism from the country.

The participants expressed serious concerns over sanctuaries available to terrorists across the borders and emphasized upon the need for a regional approach for countering terrorism.

During the meeting, the COAS reiterated the resolve of armed forces to eliminate the scourge of terrorism afflicting the country.

COAS stated that the nation had steadfastly fought the war on terror for the last two decades and had defeated the nefarious designs of Pakistan’s adversaries. Noting the recent surge in terrorist incidents, COAS remarked that the enemies of Pakistan had once again underestimated the resilience and grit of the State and the people of Pakistan.

Security forces foil terrorist attack on Turbat naval base

Security forces killed seven terrorists in KP IBOs

RAWALPINDI: A sepoy of the Frontier Corps Balochistan embraced martyrdom while four terrorists were killed during a swift and effective response of the security forces to the terrorists’ attack on the Pakistan Naval Base and the Navy Ship PNS Siddique in Turbat while ensuring the safety and security of the personnel and assets.

According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the terrorists attempted to attack the Naval Base on the night of March 25th and 26th.

However, the security forces in the vicinity were immediately mobilised to support the naval troops. “Synergetic & effective response by the armed forces enabled killing of all four terrorists in ensuing joint clearance operation,” the ISPR said.

The martyred soldier was identified as 24-years old Sepoy Noman Fareed resident of Muzaffargarh of Frontier Corps Balochistan, having fought gallantly, embraced, shahadat, during intense exchange of fire.

“Sanitization operation is being conducted to eliminate any other terrorist found in the area. Pakistan Armed Forces remain committed to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the country at all costs,” the ISPR said.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif appreciated the security forces for thwarting a terrorist attack on Turbat naval airbase.

Due to a prompt and effective response by the security forces, terrorists were sent to hell, thus saving the country from a huge damage.

PM Shehbaz expresses dismay over increase in gas prices

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed his anger over the recent increase in the price of gas and decided to review the performance of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued orders to the Ministry of Energy to complete 16 tasks in one to three months, while also directing them to submit a forensic audit report on the recent increase in gas prices in one month.

The Prime Minister has expressed his anger over the recent increase in the price of gas and has directed to submit a report on gas infrastructure, gas theft, and poor performance in three months.

It has been decided to review the performance of the OGRA and gas companies. It has also been directed to immediately set up an inter-ministerial commission to monitor the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project.

The instructions have been issued to the Power and Petroleum Division to prepare a solution for revolving credit, to submit a plan for developing a new industrial zone to supply surplus electricity, within two weeks.

Talking to the Saudi Defence Minister, the Prime Minister said Pakistan and Saudi Arabia had close brotherly ties based on commonalities of religion, history and culture, which were further strengthening with the passage of time.

Pakistan greatly valued its relations with Saudi Arabia, he said adding Saudi Arabia fully supported Pakistan on every front.

He said during his previous tenure as prime minister, Saudi Arabia played a very critical role in improving the economic situation of Pakistan, and it was highly regarded.

He said the people of Pakistan had a special place in their hearts for the Saudi royal family. While mentioning, Special Investment Facilitation Council, the Prime Minister said one window operation was created for the investors through the establishment of the council, which would facilitate business activities and investment.

He said immense opportunities were present in Pakistan in different fields including agriculture, information technology and mining.

He underlined the need for further cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia in the fields of defence and economy.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday strongly condemned the terrorist attack that took place in Dera Ismail Khan targeting a military convoy.

According to the police report, the convoy was on its way to Tank from Dera Ismail Khan when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the convoy, resulting in deaths and injuries of the soldiers.

The prime minister, in a statement, prayed to Allah Almighty for higher ranks for the martyred soldiers and for patience to the bereaved families to bear the loss with fortitude.

He said the Pakistan Army was resolved for the complete eradication of the scourge of terrorism.

“Our fight against terrorism will continue unless it is eliminated from the country in toto,” he remarked.

On the other hand, Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari condemned a suicide attack on security forces convoy in DI Khan.

He said that our security forces were targeted through a cowardly act of violence.

He said that Naib Subedar Yasir Shakeel Shaheed and Sepoy Tahir Naveed Shaheed sacrificed their lives for the sake of the motherland.

Bilawal said that the dedication and bravery of martyred soldiers would always be remembered.

He said that Pakistan People’s Party stood with the entire nation in its determination to fight terrorism.

Govt forms Steering Committee to automate and reform FBR

ISLAMABAD:  A steering committee has been established for reforms and automation in Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be the chairman of the 10-member steering committee, whose formal notification has also been issued.

Apart from this, the Federal Ministers of Finance, Commerce, Industry and Production, Law will be members of the Steering Committee.

The committee will take stock of the implementation status of the approved FBR reform plan and issue directions to facilitate the expeditious implementation of the reform agenda of FBR.

The Finance Division will provide secretarial support to the Committee and take further necessary action for notification of the subject committee accordingly.

He said Pakistan joined the global community in commemorating the International Day of Forests 2024. “This year’s theme ‘Forests and Innovations: New solutions for a better world,’ highlights the need to harness technological innovations to address the growing threats to our forests.”

The prime minister pointed out innovations could help sustainably restoring, protecting, managing, and using the forests in the most efficient manner by hampering risks of deforestation, habitat degradation, and climate change. He said Pakistan’s total area under forest cover was less than 5 percent, and around 1.5 percent of these forests were lost every year which had profound impacts on Pakistan’s biodiversity, environment and agriculture.

Being one of the most climate-impacted countries in the world, he said climate change events were becoming more frequent and massively devastating for Pakistan, pointing to the urgent need to conserve our indigenous forests.

“This has become critical to our survival as a nation.” “Our government is embarking on the next phase of our ambitious Green Pakistan Initiative which was first launched by PMLN-led government in 2016 to improve forest cover and concerted efforts were made for conservation of biodiversity in Pakistan,” he said adding in its next phase, the Green Pakistan Initiative aims to improve the forest cover, preserve wildlife habitats and help carbon sequestration.

“Given the important role that forests play in the environment, let us resolve to protect and conserve them.” PM Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the government’s firm commitment to undertake all necessary steps to preserve and improve forest cover in Pakistan.

PM launches countrywide spring plantation drive

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched the countrywide spring plantation drive by planting a sapling here.

Emphasizing the government’s commitment, he announced to double the number of saplings planted in 2024 compared to the previous year’s achievement of 240 million.

Speaking on the occasion, he highlighted the urgency to expand Pakistan’s forest cover, currently at a mere 5% of the total area, to mitigate climate risks. Quoting the Global Climate Risk Index, he underscored Pakistan’s ranking as the 5th most vulnerable country to climate-related hazards, he stressed the necessity for immediate action.

“From 1999 to 2018, the country had to face the loss of 10,000 precious lives besides billions of dollars of financial loss; therefore it is crucial to create awareness about the climate change risks at all levels including educational institutions,” the prime minister remarked.

The prime minister directed the authorities concerned to make all possible efforts to spread this plantation drive to every corner to make Pakistan a green and pollution-free country. He also asked all Pakistani citizens to help the government by fully participating in the plantation drive to save the country from climate change disasters and provide a healthy environment.

On the occasion, the prime minister was also briefed about the area-wise plantation targets across the country. He was informed that during the spring plantation 2024, a total of 54.38 saplings would be planted across the country out of which 14.1 million saplings would be planted in Punjab, 11.72 million in Sindh, 5.71 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 3 million in Balochistan, 11.85 million in Azad Jammu and

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid surprise visits to different Utility Stores across the federal capital to inspect the execution of the Prime Minister’s Ramazan Relief Package.

During the visit, the prime minister interacted with the beneficiaries of the scheme and inquired whether they faced any issues while benefiting from the package.

He instructed the authorities concerned to ensure that entitled beneficiaries of the Relief Package faced no problem in availing the facility.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif directed for submission of a comprehensive roadmap to boost IT exports.

He said the government would take steps to fully avail of the billion dollars potential of the country for IT exports, besides, the young people would be provided with required facilities of education, skills development and startups.

The prime minister chaired a review meeting on IT and Telecom sector.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister of State for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja and the relevant senior officials.

During the meeting, the prime minister said that during their previous tenure, positive outcome was witnessed from the initiation of different projects in the IT sector.

He stressed upon resolution of all issues of start ups, freelancers and IT companies relating to banking.

Expressing his satisfaction over the IT export volume of more than $3 billion in the current year, he emphasized upon its further increase. For brining Pakistan’s IT sector at par with the international standards, they would have to work hard, he observed.

The prime minister also asked for submission of a comprehensive report regarding special technology zones. The meeting was apprised of progress on IT package announced by the prime minister during June 2023.

During the previous tenure, due to special attention of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the IT exports witnessed 13 percent increase during the first seven months of the current fiscal year when compared with previous corresponding year.

Under the Digiskills programme, a total of 4 million students of 17 batches, comprising 28 percent females, had been imparted training. Pakistan had emerged as the second top country in the world on the basis of numbers of freelancers. Pakistan was exporting IT products to 170 countries of the world, it was further added.

The meeting was informed that during the previous year, an investment of $400 million was made in Pakistani startups. The prime minister directed for taking of all necessary, legal and policy related steps to attract investment and boost IT exports.

The swearing-in ceremony of federal ministers is going on in the President’s House, in which President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif are also present.

President Asif Ali Zardari is taking oath from the federal cabinet.

Those who took oath include Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Shaza Fatima Khawaja , Mohsin Naqvi, Ameer Mukam, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Rana Tanveer Hussain and Jam Kamal Khan are among those who took oath.

Apart from this, Owais Ahmed Leghari, Attaullah Tarar, Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Musadik  Masood Malik, Muhammad Aurangzeb , Mohsin Raza Naqvi Ahad Khan Cheema  and Azam Nazir Tarar are also among those who took the oath.

ANP President Asfandyar Wali’s wife passes away

ISLAMABAD: Awami National Party (ANP) President Asfandyar Wali Khan’s wife passed away in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson ANP Zahid Khan, while confirming the death of Isfandyar Wali’s wife, it has been said that the deceased will be buried in Charsadda.

Spokesman ANP said that the time of funeral prayer of the deceased will be announced later.

She was the mother of ANP’s provincial president Aimal Wali Khan.

On the other hand, President Asif Ali Zardari expressed condolence over the death of Awami National Party leader Asfandyar Wali’s wife.

“My sympathies and prayers go to the bereaved family,” the president said, according to a President House press release.

He prayed to Allah Almighty to grant peace to the departed soul and patience to the grieved family members to bear the loss with fortitude.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the death of Awami National Party leader Asfandyar Wali Khan’s wife.

Nawaz Sharif directs PM to start implementing party manifesto

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif directed the party president and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to form the cabinet soon and start implementing the manifesto.

An important meeting of the party was held under the chairmanship of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif in which the senior leadership of PML-N including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was present.

Important national and political issues were discussed in the informal consultation of the PML-N leadership.

ISLAMABAD:Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government would continue to take steps for ensuring equal rights for women and to provide them opportunities of education and jobs.

In a message on the International Women’s Day on March 8, he said, “Today the International Women Day is being celebrated around the world with the theme “Inspire Inclusion”.

“On this day I promise to the capable women of my country that our government will continue to take steps for equitable rights of women, their protection and for provision of equal opportunities of education and progress.” He said today was the day to recognize the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to provide them equal opportunities for their effective role in building the society.

This day acknowledged the constructive role of women in human evolution and “today we have to make the pledge to elevate their status in society”, he added.

He said today was the day to remember mothers of the believers and the female companions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for their services and fundamental role in building foundation of Islam, political wisdom of Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, national services of Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan, the sacrifice of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed for democracy, struggle of Mohtarma Kulsoom Nawaz for survival of democracy, Mohtarma Bilquis Edhi, and Dr Ruth Pfau for dedicating their lives for healing the wounds of humanity, courage of Malala Yousafzai for female education and all great women like them.

“We have to make the young generation aware about their achievements.”

History was witness that progress of human society was not possible without the constructive role of women. If humans looked around then women in every role was busy in becoming a valuable member of society, he remarked.

The prime minister said Islam gave equal rights to women 14 centuries back, paradise was under the feet of women and daughter was called a blessing for the home.

He said top priority of the government was to provide women equal rights and opportunities so that they could make progress in society.

He said these measures included the law of inheritance for women, scholarships for education of girls, their special share in the Punjab Endowment Fund, provision of laptops and to give jobs to them on merit.
