Court hands over Sheikh Rashid to Murree police on transitory remand

IHC bail Sheikh Rashid
  • Court directed officials to present Sheikh Rashid on Feb 09.
  • Rashid claimed that a false case was made against him.
  • Murree police said that a written decision not announced.

ISLAMABAD: A local court of Islamabad handed over Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid to Murree police on a one-day transitory remand in a case registered against the former interior minister for threatening police personnel.

The court while approving the transitory remand directed officials to present the former interior minister an ally of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan  before a Murree court on Thursday (tomorrow) by 2pm.

During today’s hearing, Rashid claimed that a false case was made against him. He said that government  wants him to change his political allegiance.

“I handed over the passwords of both mobile phones to the police. The Murree police have interrogated me for hours,” said Rashid.

The judge inquired the police if they have requested for a transitory remand before.

At this, the police said that this is the first time they have made the request.

However, Rashid’s counsel Ali Bukhari said that the AML chief is in custody, adding that Murree police’s request for a transitory remand was rejected recently by a judicial magistrate.

“It was rejected as procedure was not followed,” he said while opposing the plea for the transitory remand.

Bukhari also questioned why the police was seeking a transitory remand when they have already recovered everything from the former federal minister’s house.

“They have also taken Sheikh Rashid’s licensed weapons,” said the counsel. He added that the remand cannot be granted as it has been rejected again.

He added that the Murree police did not file a plea against the rejection of the transitory remand.

“Do you have a copy of the transitory remand’s rejection?” questioned the judge.

The Murree police said that a written decision was not announced and only a verbal order was issued.

Liver cancer: Risk factors for rise in Hepatocellular Carcinoma cases

Liver cancer
  • With 841,080 new instances of liver cancer in 2018.
  • Liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer overall.
  • Although HCC incidence and mortality are rising in various parts of Europe and the USA.

With 841,080 new instances of liver cancer in 2018 and being the fourth most common cause of cancer-related mortality globally, liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer overall. Although HCC incidence and mortality are rising in various parts of Europe and the USA, East Asia and Africa still have the highest rates of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence and mortality.

Indeed, since the early 2000s, HCC has had the greatest rate of growth among cancer-related causes of death in the USA, and if current trends continue, HCC is expected to overtake other cancer-related causes of death by 2030 to rank third. The age at presentation for HCC in India spans from 40 to 70 years, and the age adjusted incidence rate for males is 4 to 7.5 and 1.2 to 2.2 per 100,000 people per year, respectively, according to the data that are currently available.

The following risk factors for HCC were highlighted in an interview with HT Lifestyle by Dr. Vikram Raut, Director of Liver Transplantation and HPB Surgery at Medicover Hospitals in Navi Mumbai:

1. Infection with the Hepatitis B virus

When parking, always place a plastic bottle on your tyres. Here’s why. Parents | In Asia and Africa, sponsored HBV infection causes 60% of instances of HCC. Although the majority of patients with HBV-induced HCC have cirrhosis at presentation, HBV raises the risk of HCC even in the absence of cirrhosis. Patients in early 30s or 40s in Africa present with HCC, most likely as a result of exposure to aflatoxin B1, which increases the risk of HCC by working in concert with HBV. In some regions of Asia, HCC incidence has decreased as a result of HBV vaccination programmes, while many countries have not yet started universal immunisation campaigns.

2. Infection with the hepatitis C virus

In North America, Europe, and Japan, chronic HCV infection is the most prevalent underlying liver disease among individuals with HCC. An increasing number of HCV-infected patients are being successfully treated with direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy to achieve an SVR, which lowers the risk of HCC by 50–80%. However, many patients, particularly those who are members of racial or ethnic minorities or who come from underdeveloped socioeconomic areas, have not yet had their HCV status tested and are still unaware that they are infected. Additionally, even after SVR, patients with HCV-induced cirrhosis continue to have a high risk of developing HCC (>2% per year) and should be closely monitored.

3. Liquor

Cirrhosis, HCC, and alcoholic liver disease are all results of excessive alcohol consumption. Currently, cirrhosis from persistent alcohol use or NASH affects a growing number of people. Depending on the location, alcohol-related cirrhosis accounts for between 15% and 30% of HCC cases each year, with yearly incidence ranging from 1% in population-based studies to 2-3% in tertiary care referral centres. Chronic alcohol use can also raise the risk of HCC from other causes. For instance, multiple studies show that HBV carriers who drink more than those who don’t have a higher chance of developing HCC. Despite the fact that drinking alcohol and other forms of cirrhosis, particularly NASH, share many pathophysiological processes, there is evidence to support separate alcohol-specific pro-tumorigenic mechanisms in individuals.

4. NASH

NASH, which serves as the precursor stage in the development of HCC in patients with diabetes mellitus or obesity, is another common aetiological reason for cirrhosis in humans. NASH is now the most frequent cause of cirrhosis in most parts of the world due to the rising incidence of obesity. Since 2010, the percentage of HCC attributable to NASH has grown quickly, accounting for 15–20% of cases in the West today. Although the annual incidence of HCC is lower in NASH-related cirrhosis (1-2% per year) than in viral-mediated cirrhosis (3-5% per year), it is still >1.1 per 100 person-years, demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of surveillance and the need for its implementation.

Earthquake in Turkey & Syria: Sister protects sibling from dust during 36-hour wait for help

Earthquake
  • After 36 hours two children were rescued.
  • At least 1,220 people have died in Idlib governorate, a rebel-controlled area in northern Syria.
  • The hope of finding more families decreases with each hour.

Earthquake: Two children were rescued more than 36 hours after the quake trapped their family as they slept in the wreckage of their home in northern Syria.

“Get me out of here, I’ll do anything for you,” the older child whispers to rescuers who are seen on video squatting in the rubble of the children’s home in Besnaya-Bseineh, a small village in Haram, Syria.

“I’ll be your servant,” she adds, as a rescuer replies, “No, no.”

The girl’s name is Mariam, and she softly touches the hair on her younger sibling’s head as they lie squeezed together in what could be the remains of their bed. She can move her arm enough to shield her sibling’s face from the dust.

According to their father, the younger child’s name is Ilaaf, which means “protection” in Islamic.

Mustafa Zuhir Al-Sayed claims his wife and three children were sleeping in the early hours of Monday when the earth shook with a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, the most powerful to strike the region in more than a century of records.

“We felt the ground shaking … and rubble began falling over our head, and we stayed two days under the rubble,” he said. “We went through, a feeling, a feeling I hope no one has to feel.”

Pinned under rubble, Al-Sayed said his family recited the Quran and prayed out loud that someone would find them.

[embedpost slug=”/syria-is-witnessing-catastrophe-after-catastrophe/”]

“People heard us, and we were rescued – me, my wife, and the children. Thank God, we are all alive and we thank those who rescued us,” he said.

The video shows locals cheering as Mariam and Ilaaf are carried from the rubble wrapped in blankets. The children were taken to the hospital, where they’re receiving medical care.

Hope of finding more families decreases with each hour amid frigid temperatures that have made survival difficult even for those who have managed to flee the crumbling structures.

According to the Syrian Civil Defense, a humanitarian aid group better known as the “White Helmets,” at least 1,220 people have died in Idlib governorate, a rebel-controlled area in northern Syria.

The group said Tuesday that the number of dead and injured is “expected to rise significantly due to the presence of hundreds of families under the rubble.”

At least 1,280 deaths have been confirmed in government-controlled areas of Syria, according to state-run media, bringing the total Syrian toll to more than 2,500.

The total number of deaths from the earthquake across the Turkey-Syria border has risen to more than 9,400, with humanitarian groups warning that the figure is likely to grow further.

Aid is slowly reaching people in need, but even before the earthquake, the United Nations estimated that 70% of Syria’s population required humanitarian assistance.

The hope of finding more families decreases with each hour amid frigid temperatures that have made survival difficult even for those who have managed to flee the crumbling structures.

According to the Syrian Civil Defense, a humanitarian aid group better known as the “White Helmets,” at least 1,220 people have died in Idlib governorate, a rebel-controlled area in northern Syria.
