Rita Ora paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Liam Payne during the MTV Europe Music Awards 2024 on Sunday, after the One Direction star tragically passed away on October 16.
Hosting the ceremony in Manchester, Ora became visibly emotional as she reflected on Payne’s impact both in the music world and personally.
“Just want to take a moment to remember someone that was very, very dear to us. We lost him recently and he was a big part of the MTV world, and my world, and I think a lot of yours at home and everybody in here tonight,” Ora said, speaking directly into the microphone.
She went on to describe Payne as “one of the kindest people” she knew, recalling his generosity. “There were so many ways that we were talking about honoring him and I think sometimes, just simply speaking, is enough. He had the biggest heart and was always the first person to offer help in any way that he could,” she added.
After her emotional words, Ora introduced a video tribute. “Let’s just take a moment to remember our friend, Liam,” she directed, as a montage of black and white photos of Payne was shown, accompanied by the words, “MTV Remembers Liam Payne 1993-2024.”
Payne, who rose to fame as a member of One Direction, passed away at the age of 31, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
