It appears that Harry Styles’ Grammys performance was not the same as his rehearsals.
The singer’s dancers are speaking out, revealing that they had to overcome a major stage mishap during the live show after seeing some less than stellar reactions to his “As It Was” number.
In a Twitter reshare of an Instagram Stories video that has since expired, dancer Brandon Mathis stated, “You’ll be seeing a lot in the media about this performance.” But what you don’t know is that our turntable started turning in the opposite direction as soon as the curtain came down and it was time to perform. Backward. Totally freaking us all out live on television, and we were powerless to stop it.”
Brandon stated that they had “perfectly rehearsed this piece” for a week with the turntable turning one way, but that on Feb. 5, it turned the other way, necessitating immediate adjustment.
He went on to say, “And in real time, we have to troubleshoot and attempt to do a complete piece in reverse.” Professionalism, oh my!
Dexter, another dancer, provided additional insight into the design of the routine in a TikTok that has since been removed. According to Entertainment Tonight, they mentioned that the routine was “amazing” during rehearsals and that the performance featured “these beautiful formations.” But they had to pivot, which wasn’t easy, when the turntable started turning the wrong way.
Dexter reportedly added, “It sounds easy to switch all those patterns around on the spot, having not even walked in that direction.” It is such a unique kind of balance because it is circular and pulls you in various directions. We got used to doing things one way, and now it’s the other way. Fortunately, we cooperated and tried our best to reach one cool formation in time for the overhead shot, but the rest had to be changed.
It was informed by a Grammy source that “unexpected things happen in live television” and that “Harry showed he was the ultimate pro in not missing a beat” were among the highlights of the event.
And it would appear that both dancers concur. Brandon referred to Harry as a “rockstar” and a “kickass, down to earth human being who truly cares about what he’s doing and who he’s doing it with” in an Instagram post. Dexter, on the other hand, praised the artist behind “Adore You” for how he handled the situation.
According to ET, they stated, “Harry did his best to be able to walk and reverse everything while he was singing and reverse his entire duet.” Sadly, the media didn’t know what was going on, so they called it sluggish, boring, or whatever, when in reality, we were just trying to f–king stay standing.
Harry still had an amazing night, and Harry’s House won Grammys for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
Backstage, he told reporters, “When we get in the studio and start a record, we just make the music that we want to make.” Additionally, I believe that feeling of “oh, that is the right thing to do” is very pleasant.
