Turkey will begin ratifying Finland’s NATO membership, after months of opposition

Turkey
  • Recep Tayyip Erdogan made the statement alongside Finnish President Sauli Niinistö.
  • Finland has taken “real actions” to address Turkey’s worries about terrorist organizations, says Sauli Niinistö.
  • Finland and Sweden announced their intention to join NATO in May 2022.

Turkey‘s president has announced that his government will begin ratifying Finland’s NATO membership application, clearing the path for the country to join the security alliance after months of delay.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan made the statement alongside Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, who said Finland has taken “real actions” to address Turkey’s worries about terrorist organizations.

Finland and Sweden announced their intention to join NATO in May 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which forced the two countries to surrender their long-held non-aligned status.

The move was a loss for Moscow, as the Ukrainian war triggered the type of NATO enlargement that Russia invaded Ukraine to prevent.

Almost all NATO leaders supported Finland and Sweden’s bids, but under NATO regulations, only one member state can block a new applicant’s admission.

‘Positively’

Erdogan of Turkey threw a spoke in the wheel when he declared he could not see both nations joining NATO “positively,” accusing them of harboring Kurdish “terrorist organizations.”

“We have decided to start the parliamentary ratification process of Finland’s NATO Accession Protocol,” Erdogan said at the news conference in Ankara.

Erdogan said he believes NATO “will become even stronger through Finland’s membership.”

“It is very good to hear this news,” Niinistö added.

Erdogan’s approval eliminates a key impediment to Finland’s Nato membership.

Separately, Hungary’s ruling party announced that it would support Finland’s entry. A parliamentary vote had been postponed after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban accused Finland and Sweden of disseminating “outright lies” about his country’s performance on rule of law.

In late February, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that while Turkey had raised some reservations about both Sweden’s and Finland’s applications, it was primarily concerned about Sweden’s.

On Friday, Niinistö urged Turkey to reconsider Sweden’s offer.

“I have a feeling that Finnish NATO membership is not complete without Sweden,” he said.

Yet Erdogan said Turkey would not modify its position to Sweden’s NATO candidature unless “positive steps” were done.

Turkey accuses Sweden of harboring members of terrorist organizations, which Sweden rejects.

Turkey is outraged over substandard construction as ‘earthquake-proof’ homes collapse

Turkey
  • Residents believed their homes would be safe in a quake.
  • Government promises to investigate why buildings collapsed.
  • Sector officials say 50% of buildings contravene regulations.

Tenants of a luxury housing complex in southern Turkey believed their flats were ‘earthquake-proof’ until the edifice collapsed like a domino in last week’s terrible earthquake, killing hundreds.

The wreckage of the Ronesans Rezidans, which was billed as “a piece of paradise” when it first opened a decade ago, has now become a source of public outrage.

Survivors wait for word of loved ones by the mound of debris that was the 249-apartment block, as their hopes of survival wane.

“My brother lived here for ten years… It was said to be earthquake safe, but you can see the result,” said 47-year-old jeweller Hamza Alpaslan.

“It was introduced as the most beautiful residence in the world. It’s in horrible condition. There is neither cement nor proper iron in it. It’s a real hell,” he added.

Eleven days after the earthquake that killed over 43,000 people in Turkey and Syria and displaced millions, Turkish indignation is increasing over what they regard as unethical construction methods and severely faulty urban plans.

According to Turkey’s Urbanization Ministry, 84,700 buildings have collapsed or have been seriously damaged.

While the Ronesans Rezidans, or “Renaissance Residence,” had collapsed, numerous older buildings on the street remained standing.

“We rented this place as an elite place, a safe place,” said Sevil Karaabduloglu, whose two daughters are under the rubble.

Missing Ghanaian international footballer Christian Atsu who played for local team Hatayspor is also believed to have lived in the complex.

ERDOGAN’S CONSTRUCTION BOOM

Turkey has committed to investigating the building collapse and has so far interviewed 246 people, including 27 developers, 27 of whom are being detained by police.

“No rubble is cleared without collecting evidence,” said Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag.

“Everyone who had a responsibility in constructing, inspecting, and using the buildings is being evaluated.”

The ruling AK Party of President Tayyip Erdogan has placed a high value on building, which has helped drive growth throughout its two decades in office, though the industry has suffered in the last five years as the economy has faltered.

Opposition parties accused his government of failing to enforce building laws and of misusing special levies levied after the last large earthquake in 1999 to make structures more earthquake resistant.

Turkey fell 47 places in Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index to 101 in the ten years to 2022, from 54 out of 174 nations in 2012.

Erdogan argues the opposition lies in order to discredit the administration and stymie investment.

A damaged governmental building connected to Turkey’s Urbanisation Ministry lies three kilometers distant from the Renaissance Residence, and locals and activists claim critical records relating to building safety and quality control are scattered amid the wreckage.

Omer Mese, an Istanbul lawyer, said he has been keeping an eye on the ruins and is attempting to salvage what could be essential evidence, despite the fact that some documents have been destroyed as individuals left homeless hunt for anything they can burn for warmth.

“There were a lot of official documents with original signatures. It was essential to save and protect them… so that those responsible for this disaster can be brought to justice,” he said, adding the papers included data on concrete and earthquake resistance tests.

“I read the news about contractors arrested after the earthquake but when we think about this destruction and its extent… there should be more,” he added.

The Urbanisation Ministry said documents would be moved to the ministry archive in the city and were stored digitally.

BUILDING AMNESTY

According to industry officials, over half of Turkey’s total 20 million buildings violate construction rules.

The government implemented a zoning amnesty in 2018 to legalise unregistered construction projects, which engineers and architects warned may jeopardise lives.

Over 10 million people petitioned for amnesty, with 1.8 million petitions accepted. Property owners had to pay to register their structures, which were subsequently subject to a variety of taxes and levies.

The administration stated that it was necessary to eliminate conflicts between the state and residents and to legalise constructions.

“Unfortunately the zoning amnesty in our country is somehow

considered a public blessing,” Mese said.

“We have become a society that lives by considering it a plus to put something off for a day, but we end up being crushed by the consequences of that. That is the problem.”

Blinken to vow quake support on his first visit to Turkey

Anotny Blinken
  • Antony Blinken will visit Turkey on Sunday to discuss relief efforts.
  • Blinken will visit the Incirlik air base.
  • The top US diplomat will also attend the Munich Security Conference.

WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Turkey on Sunday to discuss relief efforts following a devastating earthquake, his first visit to the NATO partner that has had strained relations with Washington.

Blinken will visit the Incirlik air base, through which the US has sent aid, and then hold meetings in Ankara on “continuing US support,” according to State Department spokesman Ned Price.

The top US diplomat will also attend the Munich Security Conference, where the Ukraine crisis and tensions with China will take center stage, and will pay a visit to Turkey‘s old foe Greece, a NATO ally.

The US has flown in 200 rescues and donated an initial $85 million in humanitarian aid to Turkey, deploying Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters to carry supplies to the hardest-hit areas.

The visit, which was planned prior to the February 6 earthquake that killed almost 40,000 people in the nation and neighboring Syria, will be Blinken’s first to Turkey in more than two years.

President Joe Biden was elected after promising to take a greater distance from his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whom Biden has previously branded an autocrat.

However, the Biden administration now sees Turkey as useful in mediating between Russia and Ukraine, particularly in a pact to export grain through the Black Sea to alleviate global shortages.

The Biden administration has expressed support for Turkey’s request to purchase F-16 fighter fighters, but the transaction has been halted in Congress owing to worries about Turkey’s human rights record and threats to Greece.

The US has been looking for methods to persuade Erdogan to drop his objections to Sweden and Finland joining NATO, both of which have abandoned their previous neutrality since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Turkey has been the lone holdout, with Erdogan pressuring Sweden to crack down on Kurdish insurgents considered terrorists by Ankara.

During signs of progress, Erdogan reiterated his criticism of Sweden following a rally outside Turkey’s embassy in Stockholm in which a far-right activist set fire to Islam’s sacred book, the Quran.

In recent years, the US has been enraged by Turkey’s purchase of an advanced air defense system from Moscow, claiming that it will allow NATO’s main foe to zero in on Western fighter jets.

When Blinken visits Athens on Monday, he is expected to discuss tensions with Turkey, but the mood has dropped since the earthquake as Greece aids its neighbor.

Blinken will begin his journey in Frankfurt on Thursday and then travel to Munich for the Munich Security Conference, an annual gathering of leaders held a week before the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Blinken will be joined in Munich by Vice President Kamala Harris, who is part of a spate of US politicians visiting Europe in honour of the anniversary, with Biden scheduled to visit Poland next week.

Senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi is also due in Munich, which might lead to a meeting with Blinken, though US sources say nothing has been decided.

Blinken was scheduled to travel to Beijing earlier this month, the first trip by a top US ambassador in more than four years, to try to keep tensions between the world’s two largest economies from spiraling out of hand.

But he quickly canceled the trip after the US announced that a Chinese surveillance balloon, which was eventually shot down, had been sighted over the US mainland.
