Turkey: Erdoğan announces complete lockdown on weekends

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced to enhance further restrictions as the novel Coronavirus witnesses a major spike across the country.

Erdoğan, amidst increasing virus cases and deaths, announced a complete lockdown on weekends.

The President said the country had opted for the move in light of increasing cases of coronavirus and the surge in deaths as a result of the virus.

A complete two-day lockdown will be imposed on Saturday and Sunday each week, he announced. People will not be allowed to leave their home from Friday 9pm to Monday 5pm.

Moreover, Turkey has bought 50 million vaccines which will be provided to citizens from the current month, president Erdoğan said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call enhanced ties with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman.

On the eve of G20 leaders’ summit hosted by Riyadh, Turkish President and Saudi King Salman held a telephonic conversation.

According to the details, Erdogan and the Saudi king discussed bilateral relations and exchanged views on the G20 summit.

“President Erdogan and King Salman agreed on keeping channels of dialogue open in order for the bilateral relations to be enhanced and for issues to be settled,” the Turkish presidency added.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia have also long competed for supremacy in the Muslim world.

Earlier, King Salman, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques had a telephonic conversation with India Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the call, they discussed the work of the G20 being presided over by the Kingdom this year and the efforts made within its meetings to address the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigate its implications.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques affirmed the G20 countries are continuing to exert efforts to mitigate implications of the pandemic on the people and the global economy.

The two sides reviewed aspects of existing cooperation between the two countries and ways of developing them in various fields.

On the other hand, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that President of France Emmanuel Macron needs ‘mental treatment’ for his anti-Muslim attitude.

Macron, over Erdoğan’s remarks, said, “Outrage and insult are not a method”, recalled the ambassador of France.

The development took place as France stepped up measures in the country which its Muslim community views as anti-Islam. The French government has said it fears militancy is taking over some Muslim communities in the country.

France has since been shaken by the beheading of a teacher by a person, avenging the use of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) in a class on freedom of expression.
