Tyre Nichols family demand justice on eve of funeral

The family of a motorist Tyre Nichols who died after being beaten by police in Memphis, Tennessee, have demanded accountability on the eve of his funeral.

Tyre Nichols’ stepfather and brother promised to continue fighting for justice at a church in the city. Five ex-cops have been charged with murder.

“What happened to Tyre was a shame to this country,” racial rights activist Al Sharpton said.

The officers’ police personnel files contain a slew of complaints.

The burial is scheduled for Wednesday, a day after US Vice President Kamala Harris called Mr. Nichols’ bereaved mother.

Mr. Nichols’ stepfather, Rodney Wells, begged the people to “keep fighting for justice for my son” on Tuesday evening at the church where civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr delivered his last address and where Wednesday’s ceremony will take place.

Mr. Sharpton honored Mr. Nichols’ family and local activists and called his killing a national disgrace.

“People from all around the world witnessed the videotape of an unarmed, unprovoked guy being beaten to death by law enforcement personnel,” he added.

“That might have been any of us,” he continued.

Jamal Dupree, Mr. Nichols’ brother, also spoke, telling mourners, “My little brother didn’t deserve any of this.”

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr, Emmitt Martin III, and Justin Smith, all former Memphis police officers, have been charged with second-degree murder and other charges in Mr. Nichols’ death. Mr. Nichols and the other five are all black.

“I Am A Kid” says 13-year-old Karon Blake before getting shot

A guy has been detained in Washington and charged with murder after he shot and killed a middle school student Karon Blake who he believed was attempting to break into a car.

Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, Jason Lewis, 41, turned himself into police in Washington, DC, on Tuesday morning, according to Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee. According to court filings, Lewis, a worker for DC’s Department of Parks and Recreation, is charged with one count of second-degree murder while armed.

The accusation comes after Lewis shot and killed 13-year-old Karon Blake outside his home on January 7 at the crack of dawn. Lewis, a legally permitted holder of a concealed carry permit, told police that while he was asleep, he heard noises outside and “saw someone that looked to be fiddling with automobiles.”

Lewis reported to the police that he shouted, “Hey! what are y’all doing?, “Before Karon “bee-lined” at him “in a full sprint to the front of his gate “as per an affidavit included with the complaint. Lewis allegedly said that he then shot twice with his gun, hitting Karon.

However, the affidavit states that Lewis actually shot his gun at least three times. According to Contee, the initial shot was not fired at Karon but rather at a nearby “getaway vehicle,” which Lewis allegedly did not mention to the police. The car then started to back through the alley. Karon started to run in the direction of the car, but he soon turned around and sprinted along the sidewalk.

The docs state that Karon can be heard repeatedly shouting “I’m sorry,” “Please don’t,” “No,” “I’m a kid,” and “I’m only 12” as Lewis fires his pistol at the child. Lewis can be seen standing at his home’s open gate in pictures taken from surveillance cameras that are part of the affidavit.

“I don’t know if [Karon] knew that Mr Lewis was standing where he was standing, but, you know, it’s 4 o’clock in the morning. It’s dark out there,” Contee said.

Karon was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead. According to court filings, the chief medical examiner for the District of Columbia determined that he died from numerous gunshot wounds and that homicide was the cause of death.

According to the police chief, surveillance footage showed Karon and a second person “peering into cars that were in the block in front of where Mr Lewis resides and they were going inside the cars.” He asserted, however, that the first shot Lewis fired “kind of set in motion the chain of events” that led to Karon’s death.

“Here we have a kid who’s dead who shouldn’t be,” Contee said. “I would hope that anybody with half of a heart would impact you in some way, shape, form, or fashion. This young man shouldn’t be dead.”

Lewis’s lawyer Lee Smith said in a statement that his client maintains his innocence.

Despite the fact that this is undoubtedly tragic, Smith predicted that a jury would determine there was no crime committed in this case. “Mr Lewis has devoted his professional life to mentoring and assisting young people in the District of Columbia, which further intensifies his sorrow over Karon Blake’s passing. The family of Karon and other loved ones have the sincere sympathies of Mr Lewis and his family.”

Lewis has reportedly been on administrative leave from the city, according to the Washington Post.

When asked why it took so long to press charges, Contee told reporters that authorities were tackling a self-defence claim “that needed to be overcome” and that investigators have been “worked around the clock” on the investigation.

Contee stated, “I’m not going to jump to judgement. We wanted to get to the bottom of this. “We wanted to do this right,” they said.

DC lacks cash bail, so Lewis is still being held without bond. Smith did reveal to BuzzFeed News that he intends to submit a motion for pretrial release. Online court records show that Lewis has a preliminary hearing scheduled on February 13 in court.

Myanmar junta prepares for poll, raising fears of more bloodshed

BANGKOK: Two years after a coup ended Myanmar‘s brief democratic experiment, the country’s military is planning elections that analysts say could result in more violence as opposition to junta rule grows.

According to observers, the proposed election cannot be free and fair under the current circumstances, with one analyst characterizing it as a mere “show” aimed at justifying the junta’s hold on power.

Allegations of voter fraud in the November 2020 election, which was won resoundingly by democracy figurehead Aung San Suu Kyi‘s party, provided the army with a justification to seize control on February 1, 2021.

Despite the fact that the charges were never proven, the generals detained Suu Kyi and other prominent civilian officials in a series of pre-dawn raids.

The political opposition has been crushed, and the junta is now likely to organize a new election later this year – no later than August, according to the constitution.

With opposition blazing from the borders’ steep jungles to the plains of the army’s traditional recruiting grounds, citizens throughout large swaths of the country are unlikely to vote — and run the risk of reprisals if they do.

Any junta-run election will be “like a cart with only one wheel,” according to a former government servant in Yangon who has been on strike since the takeover. “There is no way that will produce any development,” he added, asking to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation.

Lin Lin, a member of one of the dozens of “People’s Defence Force” groups fighting the junta in the jungle near the Thai border, claimed polls would have no influence on their mission to remove the military from Myanmar politics.

“We will keep our weapons until we have a democratically elected government,” he said.

Elections

The junta-imposed state of emergency is set to expire at the end of January, at which point the constitution requires the authorities to call new elections.

Although the government of junta supremo Min Aung Hlaing has not established a date, it did give all current and aspiring political parties two months to register with its election commission last week.

Military officials are attempting to assemble a broad enough patchwork of constituents to make an election credible, including ethnic rebel groups that have avoided the post-coup upheaval and smaller, regional parties.

However, voting will most certainly be difficult in many parts of the country, according to Htwe Htwe Thein of Curtin University in Australia.

“In areas where they do have power, people may be forced to vote, and vote for the junta-affiliated party or parties,” she told.

“People would very certainly expect to be watched — and there could be consequences for not voting or voting against the junta.”

Anti-coup fighters have also threatened people assisting with the poll, with local media reporting several attacks on teams validating voter lists in Yangon’s economic center.

The junta’s “technical ability to organize anything approaching even blatantly fabricated elections will be limited by a lack of institutional capacity, uncertainty, boycotts, and violence,” according to independent expert David Mathieson.

Any poll would be “far from legitimate,” Mathieson said.

“Remember, these aren’t genuine elections. They’re a shambolic performance designed to legitimize the (junta’s) coup d’etat accusations of a rigged 2020 election “He stated.

Did this reassure investors?

Some of Adani’s companies rose somewhat on Monday, while investors continued to sell Adani stock, wiping out billions more in market value.

According to Hindenburg, just roughly 30 pages of the Adani statement dealt with topics relating to its findings.

China is enraged at the new Czech president’s call to Taiwan

PRAGUE – China chastised Czech President-elect Petr Pavel on Tuesday for a phone call the day before with Taiwan’s president and foreign minister.

“Pavel… trampled on China’s red line,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.

“This severely interferes with China’s internal affairs and has hurt the feelings of the Chinese people,” she added.

Beijing is attempting to isolate Taiwan on the international scene by opposing countries having diplomatic contacts with Taipei.

It claims self-governed, democratic Taiwan as part of its territory, which it intends to seize one day, using force if necessary.

Beijing has urged Prague to “immediately take effective measures to eliminate the negative impact of this incident and avoid irreparable damage being sustained to China-Czech relations”, Mao said.

Pavel, who was elected president on Saturday, will take over for pro-Chinese incumbent Milos Zeman on March 9.

Earlier this month, Zeman held a 45-minute video call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom he refers to as a friend, and lauded “friendly relations” between the two countries.

Pavel then called Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, who congratulated him on his election victory.

“I thanked her… and I assured her that Taiwan and the Czech Republic share the values of freedom, democracy, and human rights,” Pavel said on Twitter.

“We agreed on strengthening our partnership,” added the former general, who served as head of NATO’s military committee in 2015-2018.

He expressed his desire to “meet President Tsai in person” in the future.

The call, which Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu also participated in, lasted over 15 minutes, according to the Taiwanese presidential office.

“The president… acknowledged that president-elect Pavel carries on the spirit of former Czech president (Vaclav) Havel, who respected democracy, freedom, and human rights, under which the republic was founded, and is like-minded with Taiwan,” Tsai’s office said.

Havel served as the Czech Republic’s first president from 1993 to 2003.

Before becoming president, Havel led the Velvet Revolution, which overthrew Communism in old Czechoslovakia in 1989.

Mao stated that Beijing was pressing Prague to “honestly abide by its political commitment to the One China concept,” which the European Union observes.

Pavel said in a radio interview on Sunday that the one-China policy should be supported by a “two-system” philosophy.

“There is nothing wrong if we have specific relations with Taiwan, which is the other system,” Pavel said.

SUKKUR: Provincial Minister for Local Government Nasir Hussain Shah inaugurated 11 state-of-the-art Rescue 1122 ambulances in Sukkur which will be operated by Sindh Integrated Emergency & Health Services (SIEHS). Out of these two ambulances have been donated by China Aid specifically for CPEC route.

Sukkur is the ninth district to get Rescue 1122 ambulances after Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, Larkana, Qamber, Shahdadkot, Badin, which are being operated under the guidance & funding of Health Department, Government of Sindh.

Out of these eleven ambulances, four will be Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), three will be Advance Life Support (ALS) & four will be Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulances.

These ambulances are outfitted with life-saving drugs, medical equipment, and trained paramedics, and they will serve the region 24 hours a day, seven days a week to transport critical patients from their homes to hospital, hospital to hospital or from any accident location to hospitals.

The SIEHS Rescue 1122 ambulances’ command and control operations are supported by an ACE certified call center (Accredited Center of Excellence) system with a robust IT infrastructure.

This expansion of the emergency ambulances will not only provide quality pre-hospital emergency services to those in need in the district of Sukkur but also employment opportunities to technically trained residents of Sukkur district, ensuring improved quality of life.

Sukkur residents could access this service by dialing 1122 from any cellphone or landline.

Japan and NATO vow a strong response to China, Russia’s threats

TOKYO – Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary-General of NATO, said Tuesday in Tokyo that Japan and NATO must “stay unified and firm” in the face of security threats posed by China, North Korea, and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Stoltenberg, secretary general of the European and North American military alliance, cautioned that Beijing was keeping a close eye on developments in Ukraine and “learning lessons that may affect its future decisions”.

He spoke with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during talks as part of Stoltenberg’s journey to Asia to strengthen connections with democratic allies.

“What is happening in Europe today could happen in East Asia tomorrow. So we must remain united and firm, standing together for freedom and democracy,” he said.

Stoltenberg and Kishida expressed concern about the growing cooperation between China and Russia.

“We highlight with concern Russia’s growing military cooperation with China, including through joint operations and drills in the vicinity of Japan,” they said in a joint statement.

Stoltenberg had pushed South Korea the day before in Seoul to provide military help for Ukraine, which was invaded by its neighbor Russia about a year ago.

On Tuesday, though, he commended Japan’s “firm position” and “significant support” for Ukraine.

Tokyo, along with its G7 partners, has imposed sanctions on Moscow and taken the unusual step of providing defense weaponry and offering asylum to individuals fleeing the crisis.

Provocative behavior

Stoltenberg and Kishida both expressed alarm about North Korea’s “provocative behavior,” which ranged from nuclear testing to ballistic missile tests.

Stoltenberg had pushed South Korea the day before in Seoul to provide military help for Ukraine, which was invaded by its neighbor Russia about a year ago.

He stated that China was “not our adversary,” but he warned of China’s rising military presence in Asia, “including nuclear weapons, bullying neighbors, and threatening Taiwan,” as well as disseminating misinformation about NATO and Ukraine.

As part of efforts to strengthen ties, Kishida stated that Japan would establish an independent representative office for its contacts with NATO.

Kishida also stated that Japan will consider regular participation in the alliance’s high-level meetings.

In December, Japan announced the most significant changes to its defense and security strategy in decades.

The new strategy includes plans to raise defense spending to two percent of GDP by fiscal 2027, bringing Japan in line with NATO member guidelines.

RAMALLAH: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed his sorrow Tuesday for “innocent” Palestinians martyred in a spike of violence in the occupied West Bank, after meeting Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.

Washington’s top diplomat met Abbas in Ramallah, West Bank, on the final stop of a Middle East tour aimed at halting the violence, after meeting with Israeli Prime Official Benjamin Netanyahu and a cabinet minister.

A new wave of violence has hit both sides. On Friday, a man shot and killed seven people in an Israeli settlement in occupied east Jerusalem, a day after the worst army raid in years in the West Bank killed ten Palestinians.

This month’s war has claimed the lives of 35 Palestinian adults and children, as well as six Israeli civilians, including a toddler, and one Ukrainian.

Blinken expressed his “sorrow for the innocent Palestinian people who have lost their lives in growing violence over the previous year” in Ramallah.

Since the United Nations began counting fatalities in the occupied territory in 2005, the year 2022 has been the worst in the West Bank.

“Palestinians and Israelis alike are suffering rising insecurity and terror in their homes, communities, and places of worship,” Blinken added.

The remarks by the US envoy alongside the Palestinian leader come a day after he met with Netanyahu and encouraged both sides to take “urgent efforts” to de-escalate tensions.

After meeting with Palestinian people in the West Bank, US Secretary of State John Kerry claimed he witnessed a “shrinking horizon of hope” for Palestinians.

Unwavering support

Blinken met with new Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant before departing for the West Bank on Tuesday. Gallant was appointed as part of Netanyahu’s right-wing government in December.

Gallant hailed Blinken for his “unwavering commitment” to preserving Israel’s regional military superiority.

The deadly east Jerusalem shooting was followed by Israel’s worst operation in the West Bank in years, which killed ten people in the densely crowded Jenin refugee camp on Thursday. Israel said that its forces were targeting Islamic Jihad operatives.

In response to rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave, Israel struck locations in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

The group stated Blinken’s visit “emphasizes the utter support and partnership with the (Israeli) occupation”.

Netanyahu’s government has sought to penalize “terrorist families who enable terrorism” with home demolitions and other measures.

His administration also intends to revoke the family of the assailants’ rights to social security payments, as well as take steps to make it easier for Israeli citizens to obtain permits to carry firearms.

Blinken had made an initial visit to Egypt, where he met President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, commending “Egypt’s crucial role in promoting stability in the area”.

Egypt’s diplomatic and intelligence agencies, which get significant US military help, are frequently called upon to mediate between Israelis and Palestinians.

Blink en’s journey to Israel is part of the Biden administration’s efforts to immediately connect with Netanyahu, who had strained relations with the previous Democratic president, Barack Obama.

Blinken underlined the United States support for a Palestinian state.

“Settlement growth, legalization of (settlement) outposts, demolitions and evictions, interruptions to the historic status of holy sites, and, of course, provocation and acquiescence to violence,” he said.

Settlements and the demolition of Palestinian homes have been high on the agenda of Netanyahu’s new government, Israel’s most right-wing administration in history.

During Netanyahu’s previous tenure, Israel established ties with the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco, thanks to agreements negotiated by then-US President Donald Trump.

Netanyahu said on Monday that broadening previous agreements and “trying to finally complete the file of the Arab-Israeli problem” will also help him establish a workable solution with his Palestinian neighbors.

Nelson, 80, is claiming in the case that in March 2022, he and his wife, Claudia Peltz, hired Grijalba and Braghin through their company, Plan Design Events.

The Peltz’s engaged the team six weeks before the star-studded wedding was scheduled to take place at the billionaire’s Palm Beach estate after parting ways with their initial wedding planner.

Grijalba and Braghin, however, decided against working with Nicola and Beckham after only nine days on the assignment because they could not manage the couple over the 500-person guest list.

According to the Daily Mail, the lawsuit claims that “the wedding planner had to have the expertise and staffing to plan, coordinate, and execute a wedding event of the expected calibre and complexity due to the celebrity of the wedding couple combined with the anticipated attendance of many high-profile guests.”

In the lawsuit, Nelson also included a few of the texts that his daughter is alleged to have sent to the wedding planners, including one in which the actress said she was “tired” of correcting their errors after they claimed Lewis Hamilton RSVP’d “yes” even though he had previously informed the couple that he would not be able to attend the wedding.

Lewis Hamilton allegedly neglected to RSVP, according to the “Transformers: Age of Extinction” actress,

“Lewis Hamilton did NOT RSVP. So explain why his names [sic] on the list please.”

“We spoke to him. He can’t come so explain why you said he rsvpd yes,” she added.

Grijalba made an attempt to justify her need for more time to familiarise herself with the app that housed the virtual guest list.

She is said to have written, “I need time to do this.” “I’m going to take the time to familiarise myself with the app before sending you the information; I detest making a fool of myself, but I detest making you wait for the most. I’ll return soon.

That’s not true, Nicola apparently responded, appearing annoyed. He absolutely did not RSVP.

In the lawsuit, Nelson added that the wedding coordinators had a drinking issue.

 

The “Last Airbender” actress allegedly responded, “Yes queen!!!!” to Grijalba’s post in the group chat that she was “going for a tequila before her head blew” one week before the RSVP conversation.

According to reports, Nelson is suing the two for their legal costs.

“Hogan had his back surgery again. He had the nerves cut from his lower body.”

In this regard, the eyewitnesses said that law enforcement agencies(LEA) have raided the residence of former federal minister Chaudhry Moonis Elahi and former chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

A heavy contingent of police was present at the residence of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in Kunjah and dozens of vehicles and hundreds of personnel cordoned off the residence while police vehicles were patrolling around and outside the residence.

Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi while talking to Bol News has said that the Punjab government is taking revenge and full vindictive action is being taken against family members.
