Trump’s 2024 campaign currently has a new appearance

Trump's
  • Donald Trump announces he’s running for US president in 2024.
  • He made his first campaign stops in New Hampshire and South Carolina on Saturday.
  • In both stops, he touted what he said was his record of success during his presidency.

As some have suspected, Donald Trump’s announcement that he will run for president of the United States in 2024 was not a prank or a scheme to evade prison. He is traveling and creating the kind of foundation required for a real effort to retake the White House.

The former president made his first campaign appearance outside of Florida on Saturday, nearly three months after announcing his bid.

He addressed a Republican Party gathering in New Hampshire and declared the departing state party chair would serve as a key campaign adviser. He also earned the support of Senator Lindsey Graham and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster at the statehouse in Columbia.

The latter, a Trump ally who showed some disenchantment following the violence at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, is now firmly back in the fold.

How often have you heard the statement, “We like Trump’s policies, but we want someone new?” Mr. Graham questioned the audience. “Without Donald Trump, there would be no Trump policies. I was present.”

Once more, Mr. Trump disputed his loss in the 2020 election and assured his followers that he would be the most successful contender for the Republican Party in 2024, unlike any potential rivals.

He declared from the main hall of the state capitol, “To alter the whole system, you need a president who can take on the whole system and a president who can win.

In both appearances, Mr. Trump bragged about his accomplishments as president and criticized President Joe Biden’s record on crime, immigration, and the economy.

Trump will be permitted to return on Facebook and Instagram
Watch: Ron DeSantis: Five things you should know
The four biggest legal issues facing Trump

Todd Gerhardt, a Charleston-area Republican district executive committee member, was selling honey in plastic bottles styled like Donald Trump across the street.

Mr. Gerhardt organized a 2016 rally for Mr. Trump on opulent Kiawah Island in South Carolina and most recently paid a visit to the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate for a fundraiser and to donate his honey for the campaign’s goodie bags. Mr. Gerhardt was an early supporter of Mr. Trump’s first presidential campaign.

He downplayed worries that Republican voters in South Carolina and elsewhere in the country would be seeking for a new nominee this time around, claiming that Mar-a-Lago had a joyful environment as the Trump team prepared for the next fight.

According to Gerhardt, “Trump has actually done it when people talk about other candidates running and they say I’m going to do this or I’m going to do that. He is using all of the oxygen in the space.

However, earlier in the day, at a street market a few streets from the capital, Mr. Trump’s visit to Columbia didn’t seem to make much of an impression. A customer at a nearby coffee shop complained that it was improper for the former president to host a campaign rally on state property, but the majority of people there were unaware that he was in town.

Another local remarked, “There doesn’t seem to be the same enthusiasm for Trump this time around.”

It’s no accident that South Carolina and New Hampshire were the first two destinations on Mr. Trump’s third presidential campaign tour. The two states may end up being crucial to Mr. Trump’s plan to win back the White House.

Although Mr. Trump placed third there in 2016, the evangelical Christians who control the state’s Republican electorate may be considering other candidates, such as former Vice President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Iowa is the first state to hold a Republican presidential nomination contest in 2024.

But Mr. Trump received a one-two punch from New Hampshire and South Carolina in 2016 that propelled him to the lead, which he never gave up.

The same thing is possible in 2024. In reality, South Carolina is distinct among the conventional early voting states in that every Republican presidential contender since 1980 has won the state’s primary.

But this time, South Carolina might present Mr. Trump with a special challenge. Senator Tim Scott and former governor Nikki Haley of the state could both run against him.

If this is a turning point for Mr. Trump, it comes as polls are beginning to stabilize in his favor following the Republican Party’s poor performance in the November midterm congressional elections.

A recent Emerson Poll revealed that 55% of Republican voters supported Mr. Trump, far more than the 29% who supported Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has not declared his candidacy but is seen as the former president’s most competitive opponent. In a December Monmouth poll, Mr. DeSantis was in the lead.

After his followers attacked the US Capitol building earlier this week, Meta suspended Mr. Trump’s accounts. This week, Meta declared that it was lifting the suspension. Even if the former president hasn’t started posting again, his reappearance might present another another chance for voter outreach and funding as his still-sparsely staffed campaign prepares for its 2024 bid.

If Mr. Trump’s previous presidential campaigns were fueled by rallies and Facebook donations, his stop in South Carolina was a different kind of operation.

It was a much more low-key affair than his usual arena gatherings with their carnival vibe, with barely 300 announced guests. It was more common to see sport jackets and gowns than “Make America Great Again” clothing.

However, Mr. Trump will need the backing of both his rally-goers and the political rank-and-file in places like New Hampshire and South Carolina to win a third Republican presidential nomination. While Mr. Trump continues to perform well in national surveys, nearly half of Republican voters in a recent South Carolina poll said they would choose “someone else” over Mr. Trump.

However, the name “someone else” won’t be on the primary ballot. And since he is still the only declared contender with just over a year until voting begins, Donald Trump is experimenting with various approaches to make his case.

In New Hampshire, Mr. Trump added, “They say he’s not holding rallies and he’s not campaigning, maybe he’s lost his stride.” I’m angrier now,

Videos of Tyre Nichols’ arrest raise unanswered issues

Tyre Nichols'
  • The Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis says she is shocked by the events that led to Tyre Nichols’ death.
  • Five officers were fired earlier this week, and then charged with second-degree murder.
  • Footage of Mr Nichols’ fatal encounter with police was released on Friday.

One thing went horribly wrong that night, according to everyone who has watched the video of Tyre Nichols’ tragic collision with five Memphis police officers.

His family’s attorneys claimed the police beat him “like a human pinata” and behaved like a “gang of wolves.”

Cerelyn Davis, the first black woman to hold the position of police chief, expressed disbelief to the media. She said, “Something happened that we can’t understand.”

The five policemen were fired earlier this week as a result of the footage, and they were later charged with crimes including second-degree murder.

The videos were made accessible to the general public on Friday night. The graphic circumstances that led to Mr. Nichols’ death were depicted in the video,

Why did police pull him over?

One important detail—how did all this start—is absent from the four recordings, which total more than an hour of evidence and feature different viewpoints captured by police body cameras and a pole-mounted surveillance camera.

According to his relatives, Mr. Nichols, an enthusiastic photographer, was out driving in order to capture the sunset on camera.

Police said on Friday that there is no evidence to support the accusation that Mr. Nichols was stopped for allegedly driving recklessly, contrary to what officers initially claimed.

The police claim that the initial traffic stop was not captured, although we are not of why. The footage that has been made public only starts after officers confront him at a crossroads at 8:24 p.m. local time.

Officers with weapons drawn immediately take him out of the vehicle and hurl him to the ground.

“I did nothing,” you say. Early on, Mr. Nichols declares, and he follows the authorities’ directions.

Put your hands behind your back before I break your [expletive]! an officer yells.

The officers are working quite hard right now, Mr. Nichols tells them. “I just want to get home,” you say.

In a later moment of the video, an officer claims that Mr. Nichols swerved and nearly struck his police vehicle, but there is no visual proof of this.

Another policeman says he believes Mr. Nichols might be “on something,” implying that they thought he might have been taking narcotics. There is no evidence to suggest that this was the case, and police said they did not discover anything in his car later in the video.

Why were the officers so aggressive?

The officers are aggressive right away, shouting at Mr. Nichols and warning him to lie down or they will tase him.

In the recordings, Mr. Nichols initially complies with the officers’ rudeness despite being perplexed. As they try to handcuff him, he does as commanded and lies down on the ground.

He manages to escape when one of them tries to taze him, and the police then pepper spray him as he tries to flee.

After death, the Scorpion police unit was dismantled.
Black Americans argue about “triggering” video
It’s unclear how he got away and why the police were acting so forcefully in the first place.

“I couldn’t understand it from start to finish,” Professor Greg Donaldson from John Jay College of Criminal Justice

From the traffic stop, the officers’ anxiety when they pulled the car over, to the pursuit, to the officers’ lack of training and lack of a plan for restraining and subduing the person they had stopped.

Why did they continue to assault him?

According to Mr. Donaldson, the footage appears to demonstrate that police rage increases “as their incompetence looks to be more exposed.”

One of the officers squirts water in his eyes after himself feeling the affects of the pepper spray and suggests they should “stomp” him when they capture him.

The films that were taken during the second encounter, which started at 8:32 p.m., show them doing just that. Police repeatedly kicked and struck Mr. Nichols in the head and body for several minutes as he sobbed for his mother. One of the officers is seen breathing heavily and pacing off. He returns to the scene a little while later, grabs his extendable baton, and repeatedly strikes Mr. Nichols.

None of the officers make an effort to stop him or the other person who is seen punching Mr. Nichols at least five times in the head.

The event “simply got out of hand,” according to Mr. Donaldson.

Why did no one help him?

The video makes it clear that Mr. Nichols is in pain as a result of the beating. He writhes on the ground before slumping up against a car because he is unable to sit up straight.
The lack of humanity that followed the tragedy, according to Mr. Donaldson, was the worst aspect of it.

He claims that Mr. Nichols was left “lying there on the ground like a piece of junk” by the officers, who “stood around like it was just an afternoon on the street.”

There are more police there than were captured on the bodycams that were made public, and we are not aware of any further video.

At 8:41 p.m., doctors show in to evaluate Mr. Nichols. Twenty minutes later, a stretcher and then an ambulance can be seen in the footage. How long it will be before Mr. Nichols is taken to the hospital is unknown.

What is the cause of his death?

Even while it is obvious Mr. Nichols was badly battered, the exact reason for his death three days later in the hospital is still unknown.

There is blood surrounding his face in the footage, and we do witness officers boot him twice in the head.

However, the whole report has not been made public, according to attorneys for his family, an independent autopsy concluded that he had “extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating.”

Bernd Debusmann, Barbara Plett Usher, and Nada Tawfik contributed additional reporting.

Tyre Nichols: After death, a police squad is dismantled

Tyre Nichols
  • The Memphis Police Department has disbanded the Scorpion special unit.
  • Officers are accused of murdering Tyre Nichols, who was filmed being beaten to death.
  • The department said “it is in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate”.

The so-called Scorpion special squad of the Memphis Police Department has been disbanded because one of its members is suspected of killing Tyre Nichols.

“Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods” is what Scorpion stands for.

This 50-person unit’s goal is to lower crime rates in specific neighborhoods.

However, it has now been abolished when Mr. Nichols, 29, was seen being beaten by its officers in footage from 7 January.

The unit should be permanently deactivated, according to a statement from the department.

The Memphis Police Department must respond quickly to aid in the healing of all those affected, even though the name Scorpion has been tarnished by the heinous deeds of a select few.

Unanswered queries from the recordings of Tyre Nichols’ arrest
What exactly is a “Scorpion” unit?
Black Americans experience difficulties with the “triggering” Nichols video

With an emphasis on high-impact crimes such car thefts and gang-related offenses, the unit was established in October 2021.

The five cops, Justin Smith, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr., Tadarrius Bean, and Emmitt Martin III, were discharged last week.

Each of them is accused of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression. They were both arrested on Thursday.

According to jail records, four of the five secured bond and were freed from custody by Friday morning.

Martin and Mills’ attorneys have declared that their clients will enter a not-guilty plea.

In Memphis, a demonstrator shouted through a megaphone, “The unit that killed Tyre has been permanently disbanded,” and the audience cheered.

Less than 100 protesters had assembled in the square in front of the Memphis Police headquarters despite the rain to call for change to a policing system that they claimed routinely brutalizes black people in Memphis and around the nation.

One of the protest’s organizers, Casio Montez, said, “Memphis is taking a stance.” “This proves we’re on the right track,”

Mr. Montez said that unless “the community’s demands are satisfied,” including restructuring the department’s organized crime unit, he and other community organizers would keep up pressure on Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis and municipal authorities.

Chief Davis stated that the Scorpion team was established to be “more responsive” and “more proactive” to gun violence in the city in an interview with BBC News on Friday. She did, however, admit that the officers responsible for Tyre Nichols’ violent beating “decided to go off the rails.”

She explained, “We are evaluating each unit separately. “This action is required. We want to be very open and honest with the neighborhood.”

However, for some, the issue of police brutality is deeper entrenched than any change can resolve.

Allie Watkins, a Memphis local, carried a sign that read, “All cops uphold white supremacy,” at the march on Saturday.

She said that the sign is historically accurate because slave patrols were used at the beginning of American policing history.

The system has been set up to discriminate against black bodies, she continued, not that there is corruption in the United States. She continued by saying that if the system is flawed, the only solution is to start over.

Police initially said Mr. Nichols had been pulled over on the basis of a reckless driving suspect, but this claim has now been refuted. Three days later, on January 10, he passed away in the hospital.

Both Mr. Nichols and the five cops accused in the case are black.

On Friday, the Memphis Police Department made available four violent recordings of the traffic encounter and its immediate aftermath, totaling more than

Following the broadcast of the video, peaceful protests occurred in Memphis on Friday night, with some protesters blocking one of the city’s main thoroughfares. Smaller-scale protests also took place in other parts of the nation.

Numerous demonstrators carried signs calling for Mr. Nichols’ justice and an end to “police terror.”

Attorneys for Mr. Nichols‘ family compared the assault to the beating by Los Angeles police in 1991 of motorist Rodney King.

Jim Strickland, the mayor of Memphis, made a statement a year ago in which he praised the Scorpion program. He claimed that in order to decide where the unit would carry out its enforcement operations within the city, the city analyzed crime data.

He said that between October 2021 and January 2022, the squad conducted 566 arrests. Additionally, they seized 253 guns, 270 vehicles, and more than $100,000 in cash.

One local resident, Cornell McKinney, told a Memphis-area TV network after Mr. Nichols’ murder that he had a difficult interaction with the unit on January 3, only days before the incident involving Mr. Nichols.

The officers, who Mr. McKinney claims were driving unmarked cars, allegedly threatened to “blow his head off,” aimed a firearm at his head, and accused him of having drugs on him.

After the event, he filed a complaint with the Memphis Police Department, but he claims he has not received a response.

An individual who claimed that one of the officers who detained Mr. Nichols had beaten him while he was a prisoner eight years earlier had already sued that officer.

New US guidelines on childhood obesity are criticized by families

US
  • One child in five is obese in the US.
  • Early treatment is needed to prevent lifelong conditions, such as diabetes.
  • American Academy of Paediatrics recommends intensive therapy for children as young as six.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has advised children as young as six to have intense therapy, and those in their early teens to receive weight-loss medications or surgery.

However, some worry that this strategy may compromise living a healthy and active lifestyle.

In the US, one in five children is obese.

According to doctors, early intervention is necessary to avert chronic illnesses like diabetes.

In a suburb of Washington, I meet Tracy and her 14-year-old daughter Jaelynn. They reside in a housing complex that is bordered by roads and a few areas of lush grass.

Tracy is angry because she recently learned that Jaelynn’s school will replace the physical education class with a health course that will be offered in the classroom.

Jaelynn informs me that she attended a YMCA summer camp the previous year. She spent a lot of time outside and went on field trips during the day.

It was incredibly enjoyable, she claims. “I adored making friends,” and “I felt better, healthier, and happier.”

Jaelynn has had renal illness since she was a little child, and being overweight makes her situation worse. But according to her mother, things started to get better over the summer.

Tracy reports that “she shed twelve pounds in three months.” “Her nephrologist was astonished at how rapidly she could reduce so much weight. Both her confidence and her health got better.”

Tracy tells me that this development made her realize how crucial it was for her daughter to participate in activities.

Doctors have long advocated leading a healthy lifestyle as the most effective method to combat childhood obesity. But in recent weeks, the American Academy of Paediatrics released fresh recommendations for the first time in 15 years, reigniting the debate on this subject.

They assert that healthy nutrition and exercise are not always sufficient.

One of the recommendations’ authors, Dr. Nazrat Mirza, adds that medical care and prevention must work hand in hand.

“We have established that medicine and surgery both effective for treating obesity, which is a chronic medical disease in addition to making good lifestyle modifications.”

The guidelines, according to Dr. Mirza, aim to end the discrimination against obese people by making medical care accessible just like it is for any other condition.

She says, “Just like asthma, just like hypertension.” “In hypertension, you would advise someone to cut back on salt, but if their blood pressure remained high, you would still prescribe medication to them.”

However, the emphasis on aggressive early intervention worries some medical professionals.

At Children’s Minnesota, Dr. Katy Miller works with teenagers who are battling eating disorders, and she worries that these recommendations “set youngsters up for a hard relationship with their bodies.”

We are recommending pricey treatment plans that, even under ideal conditions, frequently fail, the author claims.

She believes that the sociocultural causes influencing childhood obesity should receive more attention.

“How can we expect someone to diet when we don’t deal with issues like poverty, food scarcity, and unstable housing?”

“She continues, “I had a 15-year-old patient whose family had been living in abject poverty and who had been advised by doctors to reduce weight. When their financial situation changed, he asked me, “Do you know what the best thing about having money is? Fruit that isn’t moldy is available to buy.”

I meet Julia on a chilly, overcast day. She recently completed a YMCA-sponsored support group on healthy cooking that lasted a whole year. She is a mother of three.

She tells me with pride, “I am the one who cooks at home, so if I cook good meals, my family stays healthy.”

Due to her pregnancy-related elevated cholesterol and prediabetes diagnosis, she was referred to the program. She tells me that she was driven because her teenage son was beginning to experience health problems as well.

I ask her what she thinks of the new rules as she prepares some fruit for her young child.

She makes a head motion.

As a parent, she says, “I’d start by modifying the food we consume and encouraging my kids to participate in sports.”

“Children in our nation don’t have a lot of opportunity to exercise, and there aren’t many sports programs in the schools. I wouldn’t even think about it until I had exhausted all other options.”

Tracy concurs on the other side of town. Surgery and drugs should only be used as a last option, she asserts.

Actor Tom Verlaine passed away at 73

Tom Verlaine
  • He was considered one of the more skilled players to emerge from CBGBs club in New York’s Bowery.
  • The band scored three UK Top 40 hits in their heyday, but split in 1978.
  • Verlaine’s death was announced by Jesse Paris Smith.

Tom Verlaine, a guitarist who became well-known in the 1970s New York punk scene as the lead singer of the rock group Television, has passed away at the age of 73.

In their prime, Television released the albums Marquee Moon and Adventure and had three UK Top 40 smash singles.

But they found greater success in Britain than in their own America, and they broke up in 1978.

Jesse Paris Smith, the daughter of longtime friend and colleague Patti Smith, made the announcement of Verlaine’s passing.

She stated that he passed away “after a brief illness,” although she did not give a cause.

Verlaine was regarded as one of the most accomplished musicians to come out of the now-defunct CBGBs bar in New York City‘s Bowery, where they shared the stage with Talking Heads, Blondie, and The Ramones.

Although they gained notoriety as a result of the punk movement, Verlaine and fellow guitarist Richard Lloyd’s music was more complicated than that of their competitors. They frequently traded lengthy solos and intricate jazz-inspired riffs.

Verlaine, who was actually named Thomas Miller and was born in New Jersey, took the stage name Verlaine in honor of the French symbolist poet Paul Verlaine.

Following the dissolution of Television, he put out a number of solo albums, and David Bowie used a rare cover of his song Kingdom Come on his Scary Monsters album.

Television, acknowledged as a major influence on the alternative music of the 1980s and 1990s, regrouped in 1992, released a self-titled third album, and continued to perform occasionally in the years that followed.

The Waterboys’ Mike Scott tweeted in honor of Verlaine, saying: “Tom Verlaine has crossed over to the beyond that his guitar playing always hinted to.

“Like Jimi Hendrix, he was the greatest rock and roll guitarist of all time and could dance from cosmic spheres to garage rock. That requires a unique magnificence.

Echo & The Bunnymen’s guitarist Will Sergeant said: “To me, Tom Verlaine’s playing was extremely important. I would be pleased if I could play something that sounded like him. Thank you Tom, he helped me find my way as a guitarist.”

Tehran: Drones strike an Iranian military facility

Tehran
  • Drones attacked a military plant in Iran’s central city of Isfahan.
  • Tehran says. The explosion left some damage, “but fortunately there were no casualties.
  • State news agency IRNA later said the explosion had been caused by “small drones”.

Tehran said on Sunday that drones struck a military facility in Isfahan, the country’s capital.

According to Mohammad Reza Jan-Nesari, the deputy head of security for the Isfahan Governorate, an explosion has taken place in one of the military facilities connected to the Ministry of Defense.

The explosion, according to Jan-Nesari, “but happily there were no victims,” left minor damage.

Later, the state news agency IRNA claimed that “small drones” were to blame for the incident.

According to IRNA, who cited the nation’s military ministry, “There was an unsuccessful attempt by tiny drones against a defense ministry industrial complex and thankfully with predictions and air defense arrangements already in place, one of them (hit).”

Two more drones were eliminated by the complex’s air defense system. Fortunately, no one was killed in this failed attack, but the complex’s roof did receive some minor damage.

According to the ministry, the attack happened about 10:30 p.m. local time.

About 440 kilometers (270 miles) south of Tehran is where the plant is.
