PHC extends ban on gold mining in Kohat

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court on Thursday extended a ban on gold mining in Kohat district due to the use of mercury in the process and directed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to inspect the environmental conditions of the area.

The court has also sought a report from the provincial government before the next hearing.

Advocate Nauman Mohibullah Kakakhel, in his petition, argued that mercury is used in the mining process in Kohat, which not only causes environmental problems but also leads to the disposal of waste into the Indus River, polluting the water.

He further stated that the waste generated from mercury usage negatively affects the Indus River and nearby agricultural lands.

The use and improper disposal of this chemical are harmful to humans, animals, and plants and violate the Environmental Protection Act.

Deputy Director Legal of the Environmental Department, Mumtaz Ali, informed the court that more time is required for site inspection.

The court granted the provincial government a one-month extension and continued the injunction against the use of mercury in gold mining.

Two militant involved in Kurram DC attack arrested

PESHAWAR: Two militants involved in the attack on Deputy Commissioner Kurram Javedullah Mehsood were arrested.

Two soldiers martyred in suicide attack in DI Khan

RAWALPINDI: At least two soldiers of Pakistan Army embraced martyrdom on Friday after a vehicle borne suicide bomber exploded himself on a security forces’ convoy in Dera Ismail Khan District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the two brave sons of soil were identified as 38-years old Naib Subedar Yasir Shakeel resident of District Kohat and 34-years old Sepoy Tahir Naveed, resident of District Kohat who embraced martyrdom.

“Security forces of Pakistan remain determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve.

Moreover, the perpetrators of this cowardly attack will be brought to Justice,” the ISPR said.

KOHAT: Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has arrested six terrorists during an intelligence based operation in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the details, an intelligence-based operation was conducted by the Anti-Terrorism Department in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

During the operation, six terrorists including two commanders arrested who were wanted in different cases.

According to the CTD officials, all the terrorists, including the commanders, have been shifted to an unknown location for investigation.

CTD officials said that the arrested terrorists include Commander Kamal alias Rakiti, and Commander Abdullah alias Azrael.

Earlier, six terrorists were killed in an exchange of fire during a joint intelligence-based operation by the Lakki Marwat Police and the Counter-Terrorism Department.

The terrorists were wanted by the Lakki Marwat Police and CTD in the attacks on police and terrorist incidents.

KOHAT: At least 11 children died and several other recovered as boat capsized in Tanda Dam of Kohat on Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kohat Furqan Ashraf confirmed the tragic incident and said that the boat was carrying as many as 30 people and most of them were children. 15 children have been taken out and shifted to the hospital while 11 children have died.

Rescue sources said most of the people who were killed were kids.

Rescue sources further said that all the children belong to the village of Mir Bash Khel in the suburbs of Kohat and all these children are students of a local madrassa who had come for picnic.

DC Ashraf said that a team of divers has been called from Peshawar that will reach the spot in one to two hours.

He added that about 16 children who drowned were taken to the hospital while 11 have died.
