Chief Justice advocates dismissal of officers involved in felling

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has upheld the decision to dismiss and penalize a regional officer of the Mardan forest division — Meher Badshah — for his involvement in the logging of Shisham trees in Mardan.

The court has urged the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to provide the forest department’s 5-year budget, and the details of the employees and the trees logged legally, and illegally.

The apex court has also asked for details regarding the department’s 5-year afforestation plan.

During the hearing session, the court remarked that rapid deforestation is extremely serious, and the practice is taking place in cahoots.

Chief Justice of Pakistan — Qazi Faez Isa — observed that rapid deforestation is causing extreme weather events while the trees are being felled and sold all over the country.

The Chief Justice has also remarked that the employees and officers involved in felling should be dismissed from their jobs as he criticized the department for its inactivity.

The three-member bench, under Chief Justice Qazi Faez, has adjourned the hearing for one month.

Three killed, seven other injured IED blast in Mardan

MARDAN: At least three people were killed and seven others were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast near a police van near Jalala bridge in the Takhtbhai area of Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

District Police Officer (DPO) Mardan Zahoor Barbar Afridi confirmed that the IED blast took place near the police mobile in which 8 people were injured.

The rescue operations were started in the area after explosion and the injured were shifted to the hospital where three people died during treatment.

Rescue officials said that medical assistance is being provided to other people injured in the blast.

DPO Mardan said that the explosives were planted on the road side and as soon as the police vehicle passed, there was a loud explosion.

DPO further stated that a search operation was launched after cordoning off the area.

PESHAWAR: Superintendent  of Police (SP) Ijaz Khan was martyred and three others sustained injuries in exchange of firing in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) spokesman, there was an exchange of fire between the police and the terrorists in Mardan’s Katlang tehsil, during which SP Ijaz Khan was martyred by the firing of the terrorists.

The spokesperson said that two officials including deputy superintendent of police (DSP) were seriously injured due to firing by terrorists who were shifted to the hospital for medical assistance while two wanted terrorists were killed in police firing.

According to police sources, an intelligence-based operation was conducted against terrorists in ​​Mardan, in which the most wanted terrorist Mohsin Qadir was killed by the police.

On the other hand, the funeral prayer of Shaheed SP Ijaz Khan was offered in Police Lines in which DPO Mardan and other police officials attended.

ECP imposes fines over code of conduct violations

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) monitoring teams have imposed fines totaling over Rs 120,000 on individuals for violating election code in various areas of the country.

Najeebullah Kakar, the District Monitoring Officer in Ziarat, Balochistan, has fined Noor Muhammad Damar, a PML(N) Provincial Assembly (PB-07) candidate, Rs 40,000 for breaching the election code of conduct.

Furthermore, the District Monitoring Officer Mardan has imposed fines, including Rs 25,000 for Provincial Assembly candidate Zulfiqar Khan (PK-58), Rs 10,000 for Gohar Ali Shah, an ANP candidate in (PK-54) Mardan, and another

Rs 10,000 for a candidate in (PK-61) Mardan. Additionally, Jamshed Khan (PML-N) received a fine of Rs 10,000.

District Monitoring Officer, Haripur Sardar Farhd Ali, has levied fines of 5,000 each on Qasim Shah, Tehsil Chairman of Ghazi, Khan Nawaz Khan, Vice Chairman of Khirbara, and Chaudhry Azhar Ali, Vice Chairman of Kala Katha for breaching the election code of conduct.

Monitoring teams are swiftly removing prohibited advertising materials from main highways across the four provinces and Islamabad. In violation of the code of conduct, the District Monitoring Officer in Swat has fined the respective candidate Rs 20,000.

District Monitoring Officers across different cities have issued notices to candidates found in violation of the code of conduct. Additionally, these officers conducted meetings with election candidates in various districts, emphasizing the swift action that will be taken in case of any violations.

PTI leader Asad Qaiser’s bail application was heard in the court of the Judicial Magistrate of Mardan, in which the court granted the bail of the former speaker of the National Assembly against a surety bond of Rs 90,000.

It should be noted that on December 2, the court of Mardan accepted the bail application of PTI leader Asad Qaiser and issued an order for his release, but he was arrested by the police once again. Asad Qaiser is currently imprisoned in Central Jail Mardan.

LAHORE: The massive crackdown against gas theft continued in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the federal capital Islamabad by the  Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).

Spokesperson SNGPL said monitoring teams detected a 5 km long illegal gas theft network in Mardan. The teams disconnected the illegal gas connection of the farmhouse in Lahore  and domestic gas connection  was being used for commercial purposes in Lahore.

The spokesman said that apart from Punjab, action was taken against gas thieves in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad and 241 more gas connections were disconnected.

Spokesperson SNGPL said 19 connections were disconnected in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, 43 in Gujarat, Sialkot, Sargodha, 62 in Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Lahore & Sahiwal, 49 in Bahawalpur & Multan, 50 in Peshawar and Mardan.

The spokesperson says that Rs 2.7 million will be collected from the people involved in gas theft.

RAWALPINDI: The funeral prayers of two army soldiers, who sacrificed their lives in North Waziristan gunfight, were offered in Mardan and Bajaur areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), both soldiers embraced martyrdom while fighting valiantly during an exchange of fire with terrorists in Spinwam, North Waziristan district.

The funeral prayer of martyred sepoy Afzal Khan was offered at Badar Gah in Mardan and funeral prayer of martyred Sepoy Imran Ullah was offered at Sarai Sar in Bajaur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A large number of senior serving and retired officers, soldiers, relatives and people participated in the funeral prayers. Both Sepoy Afzal Khan and Sepoy Imran Ullah were laid to rest with full military honours.

The military’s top brass paid homage to the brave soldiers and reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the country against all internal and external threats.

Earlier, two soldiers embraced martyrdom while valiantly fighting against terrorists in Spinwam, North Waziristan district, according to a statement by military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
