KCCI prompts Nepra for urgent hearing

KCCI

KARACHI: The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has prompted the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to hold an urgent hearing of the stakeholders of Karachi regarding electricity issues.

KCCI president wrote a letter to Nepra Chairman Waseem Mukhtar regarding inflated electricity costs.

The letter held the government and K-Electric (KE) responsible for exorbitant electricity bills in Karachi. It also entailed a formula to decrease the cost of electricity in Karachi.

The Chairman of Nepra has been requested to consider the points mentioned in the letter on an urgent basis.

KCCI President has called the Power Holding Limited (PHL) surcharge imposing Rs3.23 per unit on the consumers unjust.

As per the letter, KE is charging 3 to 5 Rupees higher than other distribution companies (Discos) for fuel adjustment. Also, Karachi remains unpaid as far as the promised subsidy of Rs33 billion — during COVID-19 — is concerned. Karachi electricity consumers are being charged a Rs1.52 unit additional surcharge. Solving these issues may decrease electricity costs by 7 to 8 Rupees.

Nepra has been requested to call the stakeholders of Karachi for an urgent hearing.

Linking risk of stroke to smoke, new findings

Stroke risk

A research — published in August — studied and linked stroke prevalence to cigarette consumption.

The study titled “From smoke to stroke: quantifying the impact of smoking on stroke prevalence” assessed the relationship between smoking-related factors and the risk of stroke, including the influence of variations in demography on the relationship.

The research evaluated clinical attributes and factors like duration of smoking, and content of nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide. More than 9 thousand participants were part of this study.

The study confirmed the contribution of smoking towards increased stroke risk. Carbon monoxide and nicotine exposure seem to be the main cause of the effect. The results of the study can help design stroke prevention strategies that specifically consider lifestyle, behaviors and demography.

Eggs may slow down cognitive decline, new study

Egg consumption
  • Egg consumption may be linked to maintenance of cognitive function, a new study suggests.
  • Cognitive decline in women consuming more eggs per week is less over years, findings show.
  • However, the research needs more supporting data of larger samples for major inferences.

A new hope has emerged for people with cognitive decline or those on the verge of it. Cognitive decline can be defined as impairment in mental capabilities characterized by conditions like memory loss or constrained thinking. It is a malady that affects person’s quality of life, and limits their activities. The effects can especially be observed in older people.

Recently, a study — published in August — found that egg consumption may be linked to maintenance of cognitive function.

The study, by the title Egg Consumption and 4-Year Change in Cognitive Function in Older Men and Women: The Rancho Bernardo Study, suggested that the semantic memory and executive function of women consuming more eggs per week showed less decline over 4 years. Even though eggs have high levels of cholesterol, they may help with the maintenance of cognitive function.

Although the study needs more supporting data of larger samples, it provides stimulus for further research into more affordable options — supplementary at least — that can be used to prevent age-related mental issues.

Eggs have previously been studied for proteins and other nutrients that are linked to well-being. Also, their low-cost feature gives them an edge. Hence, people should consider the suitable consumption of eggs —  in case their health condition allows it — for a better cognitive life.

Your fight against Dengue! Know it before it gets to know you

Two dengue cases reported in Rawalpindi

Dengue, also known as break-bone fever, is a viral infection that spreads through mosquitoes. The mosquito-transmitted disease prevails in the tropical and sub-tropical zones. Pakistan, being in the subtropical vicinity, appears as a breeding ground for Dengue.

According to the past reports of the World Health Organization, Dengue is endemic to Pakistan as the cases are reported throughout the year. However, the transmission seems to increase seasonally and the upsurges are mostly associated with post-monsoon conditions.

Dengue can be deadly, especially when a person is infected more than once. Hence, anyone who has been infected by Dengue before should take extra precautions. Some of the symptoms that one needs to beware of include high fever, headache, pain behind eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands and rash.

Since the infection is also accompanied by thinning of blood, caused by low platelet count, one should be very careful with even over-the-counter medicines without doctor’s prescription; these medicines may severely complicate one’s condition by further thinning out blood.

As a Pakistani, being vulnerable to this viral disease and its lethality, one must be informed about major ways to prevent Dengue. Some of the steps that can be taken include the appropriate use of mosquito repellent, wearing clothes that fully protect the body, taking steps to control mosquitoes, eliminating stagnant water as a breeding ground and avoiding areas or peak hours associated with Dengue.
