Sindh government has decided to extend COVID restrictions in the province for another 14 days owing to the sharp rise in Coronavirus cases.

On Saturday (today), a meeting of the COVID Task Force headed by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took place which has decided that the shops will remain open until 6:00 pm.

The meeting also decided to extend COVID limitations with the imposition of a ban on tourist spots including Seaview, Hawks Bay and other amusement parks.

The shops and departmental stores across the province would remain open until 6:00 pm with adherence to full COVID-related SOPs.

The intercity transport will continue in the province with 50% passengers.

The decision to reopen schools will only be made after improvement in the virus situation. However, the meeting has also directed Education Minister Saeed Ghani to ensure a speedy vaccination of teachers.

The task force further decided that marriage halls would remain shut amidst the virus spike across Sindh.

Cyclone Tauktae poses no threat to Pakistan’s coastal regions, including Karachi

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has denied the possibility of rain in Karachi during the cyclonic weather conditions, forecasting extreme heat in Karachi on Sunday.

Cyclone Tauktae is forecast to make landfall as a ‘very strong’ cyclonic storm on Tuesday off the coast of Gujarat, India.

Sardar Sarfaraz, Director PMD, has stated that the maximum temperature in the city will rise to 42 to 43 degrees Celsius during the hot weather season.

The Arabian Sea Cyclone Tauktae poses no threat to Pakistan’s coastal regions, including Karachi, according to a weather official.

The weather in Hyderabad and Shaheed Benazirabad will be extremely hot, with dusty winds blowing in the region.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Sunday that people in Karachi are experiencing hot weather, with temperatures reaching 42 degrees Celsius in the port city.

Dusty winds swirling at 39 kilometers per hour in the port city and surrounding areas, while the Met Office forecasts extreme hot and humid conditions in the city for the next three days.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), “Presently the winds blowing at 39 KM wind speed that could enhance up to 48 kilometers per hour today.”

Earlier, Cyclone Tauktae “is likely to intensify further” during the next 18-24 hours, the Pakistan Meteorological Department warned on Saturday night.

PMD said in an advisory posted on its website that during the next 18-24 hours, Tauktae is likely to transform into a “Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS)”.

According to the details, the cyclone may move further in the northwest direction and will reach Gujrat on May 18’s afternoon or evening.

The Cyclonic Storm “TAUKTAE” has tracked Northwestward at a speed of 18 Km and lay centered at 2100 PST of 15 May 2021 near latitude 14.5N and longitude 72.8E, at a distance of about 1310 km south-southeast of Karachi.

“Maximum sustained winds around the system center are 100-120 kmph gusting to 140 kmph,” the advisory said.

Moreover, dust/thunderstorm-rains with isolated moderate/heavy falls and gusty winds of 40-60 Kmph are also likely in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jamshoro and Shaeed- Banzirabad, during 18-20 May 2021.

It was also mentioned in the advisory that sea conditions will be rough to very rough and fishermen are advised not to venture in the sea during 16-20 May 2021.

Chief Minister (CM) Sindh Murad Ali Shah has on Saturday (today) declared an emergency all over Sindh amidst the cyclone Tauktae, which is expected to bring a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’.

CM Sindh presided over a meeting today and warned of an emergency as cyclone Tauktae can bring severe gusty winds and thunderstorm.

“A control room should be established at the chief secretary’s office to keep close coordination with all the districts, in respect of their requirements and giving them necessary instruction on behalf of the government,” he said.

During the meeting, the Director of the Pakistan Meteorological Department said there was a generic term for a non-frontal anti-clockwise rotating weather system, with surface winds ranging from 34 to 47 knots.

The Sindh chief minister was told that cyclones in Pakistan and South Asia caused different kinds of disturbances. “Gusty winds and damage in detaching fruit from the tree is caused when a depression develops a pressure of 996 hPa/mb with a wind speed of 22 to 27 knots,” read the press release.

“When deep depression with a pressure of 986-995 hPa/mb develops with a wind speed of 28 to 33 knots negligible damages are caused to houses, fruit trees, some crops and caravans. When the cyclonic storm has a pressure of 971-970 hPa/mb along with a wind speed of 34-47 knots it causes minor damages to houses and significant damage to signboards, trees and small crafts,” added the press release.

According to weather reports, Cyclone Tauktae, which is currently centred over Lakshadweep in India, could have a wind speed of 150 to 160 kmph by Monday (May 17).

Heavy rain lashed the Indian state of Kerala as the country’s met office issued a red alert in five districts of the region.

Cyclone Tauktae is expected to make landfall on the western coast of India.

Pakistan ‘Not Under Threat’: PMD

PMD’s Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, Karachi said that none of Pakistan coastal area is under any threat. However, Fishermen of Sindh’s coastal area were advised to remain alert and skirt going into the deep sea.

After the cyclone alert, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority in a statement scared all the relevant deputy commissioners to take precautionary measures and to educate people of the coastal belt.

CM Sindh Pens letter to PM Imran over province’s reservations on Census

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah has on Wednesday (today) penned a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan and expressed the province’s reservations over the population census figures.

CM Sindh’s letter to the Prime Minister read, “Sindh have reservations over approval of the population census results in the Council of Common Interest (CCI).”

The chief minister in his letter asked for a new population census immediately.

“Several millions of people in Sindh have not been counted in the population census,” the letter further read.

Murad Ali Shah added more in his letter, “Sindh’s population has been over 60 million.”

“In Census figures the average number of the members of a family in Sindh has been delineated five members,” it added more.

Sindh’s chief minister also referred to survey reports of the UNICEF and other international institutions with regard to the population of the province.

According to the letter, Murad Ali Shah had presented his reservations and evidence in written in the session of the CCI.

SHC to freeze CM Sindh’s salary if pensions not released in two weeks

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has on Wednesday heard the petition seeking of government employees for immediate release of their pensions.

The SHC has given two weeks’ time to the Sindh government to release the pensions to retired employees.

During the hearing, the SHC remarked that the court will pass an order to freeze the salary of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah if the pensions of govt employees were not released till February 16.

The court will also pass an order to stop the salary of the principal secretary to CM Sindh.

Moreover, the matter will be forwarded to the Sindh governor if pensions were not released in the given time.

The court adjourned the hearing till February 16.

The federal government last week tightened the noose around ghost pensioners and declared bio-metric verification mandatory.

Under the new system, pensioners drawing pensions under the federal treasury rules will undergo biometric verification every year in the months of March and October.

Board of Secondary Education, Karachi (BSEK) has appointed its new chairman on the directives of Sindh government, a notification issued said on Wednesday.

The new chairman, Syed Sharaf Ali Shah, has been appointed for a tenure of three years in place of Dr Saeeduddin upon the recommendation of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

“The interim contract of Dr Saeeduddin as Chairman Board of Secondary Education […] is hereby terminated with immediate effect,” the notification said.
