PM Imran, Senate Chairman discuss parliamentary matters

Chairman of the Senate Sadiq Sanjrani called on Prime Minister Imran Khan at his office on Wednesday (today).

According to the details, parliamentary issues and matters related to legislation in Senate came under discussion in the meeting.

In March this year, the Senate chairman election concluded with government-backed candidates Sadiq Sanjrani and Mirza Mohammad Afridi emerging as the victors.

In the race for chairman, Sanjrani defeated Opposition candidate Yousaf Raza Gillani with 48 votes, while Gillani received 42 votes.

On the other hand, government candidate Afridi won the election for the deputy chairman of the Senate with 54 votes, defeating Opposition’s Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, who grabbed 44 votes.

Senator Syed Muzafar Hussain Shah of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional, who was the presiding officer, administered the oath of chairman to Sanjrani.

During counting, seven votes cast for Gillani were rejected. According to the presiding officer, the stamps were not placed correctly on the ballot paper which rendered them null and void.

On Sunday, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz said that the government will have to pay a “heavy price” for assaulting the PML-N leaders outside parliament a day earlier. She warned the government that they will be treated the same as the PML-N leaders.

It is pertinent to mention here that chaos broke out on Saturday outside parliament after Prime Minister Imran Khan won the vote of confidence. PTI and PML-N leaders had heated argument which turned to physical blows.

During the media interaction, Maryam highlighted the incident took that took place on Saturday and said,

“The party will not take this lying down. The disrespect shown to senior leadership will not be tolerated.”

PML-N vice president said that Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal, Miftah Ismail, Marriyum Aurangzeb, Murtaza Javed Abbasi, Khurram Dastagir, and Musadik Malik were assaulted “in front of cameras” and said there was “great anger” within the party ranks over the incident.

“You can keep this lecture you like to give us on ethics and morality to yourselves,” said Maryam. “You will have to pay a heavy price for this. If you slap us twice, we will slap you ten times,” she added.
