LHC moved for removal of Sadiq Sanjrani as Senate chairman

LAHORE: A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court(LHC) to remove Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani from office.

To remove Sadiq Sanjrani from the post of Senate Chairman, citizen Mashkoor Hussain filed a petition in the Lahore High Court, in which the Election Commission of Pakistan, including Sadiq Sanjrani, and others have been made parties.

It has been stated in the petition that Sadiq Sanjrani contested the election on the seat of the provincial assembly of Balochistan and he won the election, the election commission also issued the notification of success.

It has been argued in the petition that Sadiq Sanjrani cannot hold two seats at the same time, he is illegally acting as Senate Chairman.

In the petition, it has been requested that the Election Commission of Pakistan should order Sadiq Sanjrani’s seat as a senator to be declared vacant and the Lahore High Court should also stop him from working as Senate Chairman.

ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, Nuzhat Sadiq, and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari have resigned from the Senate seats.

PPP senior leader Yusuf Raza Gilani submitted his resignation from the Senate seat to Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani.

Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani accepted the resignation of Yusuf Raza Gilani, the notification of which has also been issued. The PPP leader has taken oath as a Member of the National Assembly.

It should be noted that earlier the news of Yusuf Raza Gilani being made the Chairman of the Senate came out and there were three years left for his tenure in the Senate.

On the other hand, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Nuzhat Sadiq and Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI) Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari resigned from the Senate seats.

Senator Nuzhat Sadiq submitted his resignation to Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani which was accepted by him. Senator Nuzhat Sadiq will take oath as a member of the National Assembly.

Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari of Jamiat Ulema Islam has also resigned from the Senate seat.

Senator Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari also submitted his resignation to Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani which he accepted and issued the notification.

Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari will also take oath as a member of the National Assembly today.

General elections 2024 will be held on time: ECP

ISLAMABAD:  After the approval of the resolution in the Senate, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has said the General Elections 2024 will be held as per schedule.

Sources said that the ECP said that the resolution of the Senate will not have any effect on the election schedule, except the orders of the Supreme Court, no orders can affect the election schedule.

Earlier, Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani chaired the meeting of the upper house, the resolution to postpone the general elections was approved by majority vote.

The Senate passed the resolution to postpone the elections 2024 in the country by a majority vote.

Senator Dilawar Khan tabled a resolution in the upper house of the Parliament seeking a delay in the elections which was approved by the majority of lawmakers.

He said that it is very cold in most of the areas, due to which it is difficult for these areas to participate in the election process.

ISLAMABAD: Former foreign minister and former Speaker National Assembly Gohar Ayub Khan passed away at the age of 86.

Family sources have confirmed Gohar Ayub’s death, his Namaz-e-Janaza will be offered on Saturday (tomorrow) at 3:00pm in Village Rehana, Haripur District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

It should be noted that Gohar Ayub was the son of former Field Marshal President Ayub Khan and father of Secretary General Pakistan Tehreak Insaf (PTI) Omar Ayub.

Gohar Ayub Khan was born on January 15, 1937 in Rehana village of Haripur district. He was elected Speaker of the National Assembly on November 4, 1990 and held the position till October 17, 1993.

Gohar Ayub Khan has also served as the Foreign Minister of Pakistan from 1997 to 1998 during the government of Nawaz Sharif.

Sadiq Sanjrani visits S.M Zafar’s residence to condole his death

ISLAMABAD:  Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani visited the residence of Senator Ali Zafar to condole the demise of his father and renowned lawyer, S.M. Zafar, who passed away on October 19 this year.

The Senate Chairman prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace and for the grant of patience to the bereaved family. Senator Abdul Qadir also accompanied the Senate Chairman.

Sanjrani paid tribute to the services and contributions of the deceased, saying that Zafar was an extraordinary jurist and a very sophisticated person. S.M. Zafar’s death is a loss to Pakistani politics and the Parliament, said the Senate Chairman.

S.M. Zafar passed away at the age of 93 in Lahore after a prolonged illness.

Earlier, Veteran jurist and former law minister Syed Muhammad Zafar, popularly known as S.M. Zafar, passed away due to age-related illness. He was 93.

ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the Senate, Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, has reached in Beijing alongside a high-level delegation for a four-day visit.

The delegation included Senators Dilawar Khan, Faisal Saleem Rahman, Rana Mahmood ul Hassan and Mohammad Abdul Qadir.

Upon their arrival at the airport, the Pakistani Ambassador to China extended a warm welcome to Chairman of the Senate and the delegation.

During his visit, Sanjrani will hold significant meetings, including one with Wang Yang, the Chairman of China’s National Committee for People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Mastung Blast: Senators visits Civil Hospital Quetta

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, along with a delegation of senators, visited Civil Hospital Quetta to inquire about the well-being of the injured from the Mastung blast.

Sanjrani was joined by Senator Zanseebullah Bazai, Prince Umar Ahmadzai, and Rukhsana Zuberi during the hospital visit to meet with the blast victims.

Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani conveyed his contentment with the care provided to the injured.

He emphasized that terrorists have no affiliation with Islam or humanity. The attack on the Eid Milad-ul-Nabi (PBUH) procession is a stark illustration of the terrorists’ anti-Islamic stance.

Sanjrani also commended the Pakistan Army and security forces for their effective counterterrorism efforts, assuring that victims would receive full assistance.

He underscored their shared empathy with the victims and their determination to prevent any disruption of the peace process.

The meeting also discussed progress of development projects in Balochistan.

The Chairman Senate paid tribute to PM Shehbaz Sharif on the restoration of work at Dalbandin Airport in Balochistan on an emergency basis.

He also lauded the efforts of the prime minister and his economic team for materialization of deal with International Monetary Fund.

Separately, Federal Minister for Education and Technical Training Rana Tanvir Hussain called on the prime minister and discussed with him political matters.

He also updated the prime minister about the professional issues related to his ministry.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over sudden death of PML-N leader Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry’s son who died in a road accident here on Monday night.

The prime minister, in a statement issued by the PM office, offered his heartfelt condolence and sympathies to the bereaved family of late Anza Tariq.

He prayed to Allah Almighty to grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude.

He also prayed for grant of eternal peace to the departed soul.

Meanwhile, in his tweet, the prime minister said that for parents, nothing was more heart shattering than losing a child.

ISLAMABAD: Former PTI leader and Senator Faisal Vawda submitted his resignation to Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani.

“The seat was the trust of Imran Khan,” Faisal Vawda said in a social media statement. “I have fulfilled my moral duty as well as to comply with the Supreme Court’s order,” he said.

“I am grateful to Almighty Allah, and thanks to Imran Khan and all senators,” he added.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in line with the orders of the Supreme Court, withdrew the notification of de-seating Faisal Vawda from the Senate and restored his Senate membership recently.

However, it was a short-lived arrangement as Faisal Vawda, under a commitment given to the Supreme Court, had to resign as a Senate member, paving the way for a fresh election on the upper house seat from Sindh.

Faisal Vawda was elected senator on a PTI ticket and later disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan over dual nationality.

PM Imran, Senate Chairman discuss parliamentary matters

Chairman of the Senate Sadiq Sanjrani called on Prime Minister Imran Khan at his office on Wednesday (today).

According to the details, parliamentary issues and matters related to legislation in Senate came under discussion in the meeting.

In March this year, the Senate chairman election concluded with government-backed candidates Sadiq Sanjrani and Mirza Mohammad Afridi emerging as the victors.

In the race for chairman, Sanjrani defeated Opposition candidate Yousaf Raza Gillani with 48 votes, while Gillani received 42 votes.

On the other hand, government candidate Afridi won the election for the deputy chairman of the Senate with 54 votes, defeating Opposition’s Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, who grabbed 44 votes.

Senator Syed Muzafar Hussain Shah of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional, who was the presiding officer, administered the oath of chairman to Sanjrani.

During counting, seven votes cast for Gillani were rejected. According to the presiding officer, the stamps were not placed correctly on the ballot paper which rendered them null and void.
