Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan’s 37-carat emerald sold for nearly $9m

Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan's emerald
  • Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan’s emerald sold for nearly $9 million.
  • He commissioned Cartier to create the brooch for his wife.
  • His wife later auctioned the emerald in 1969.

A rare 37-carat square-cut emerald, once owned by Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, was sold for nearly $9 million at an auction in Geneva, setting a new record for the world’s most expensive green stone, according to AFP.

The emerald, part of a Cartier diamond and emerald brooch, was sold by Christie’s and can also be worn as a pendant. This sale dethroned the previous record-holder, a Bulgari piece given by Richard Burton to Elizabeth Taylor, as the most valuable emerald.

In 1960, Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan commissioned Cartier to create the brooch, set with 20 marquise-cut diamonds, for his then-wife, British socialite Nina Dyer. Dyer later auctioned the emerald in 1969 to raise funds for animals, marking the emerald’s first appearance at a Christie’s sale in Switzerland.

After being bought by jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels, the emerald passed to Harry Winston, known as the “King of Diamonds.”

“Emeralds are hot right now, and this one ticks all the boxes,” said Max Fawcett, Christie’s EMEA Head of Jewellery.

Previously, Elizabeth Taylor’s Bulgari emerald and diamond pendant brooch sold for $6.5 million during a record-setting auction at Christie’s New York in 2011, which brought in over $156.75 million.

Ridhi Dogra responds to working with Fawad Khan in ‘Abir Gulaal’

Fawad Khan
  • Fawad Khan is returning to Bollywood with the Abir Gulaal.
  • His return follows the recent lifting of the ban on Pakistani actors.
  • Ridhi Dogra discussed her decision to work with Fawad.

Fawad Khan is making his long-awaited return to Bollywood with the announcement of Abir Gulaal, a romantic comedy in which he stars alongside Vaani Kapoor. His return follows the recent lifting of the ban on Pakistani actors in India, allowing Fawad to resume work in the Indian entertainment industry.

During an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Ridhi Dogra, co-actor in Abir Gulaal, discussed her decision to work with Fawad. She explained, “I don’t think there’s a division in art… We don’t see nationality.” She added that her only concern was ensuring legal clearance. “The only care I took was in confirming whether or not I am allowed to work with said nationality (Pakistanis). And yes, our country and government grant us the permission to do so,” she said.

Ridhi also reflected on how her love for her national heritage has kept her working in the Indian film industry, despite suggestions to pursue opportunities abroad. The filming for Abir Gulaal began in October in London.

Fawad’s return marks a significant shift in the industry, following the 2019 ban imposed after the Pulwama attack. However, in late 2023, the Bombay High Court relaxed restrictions, and the Supreme Court dismissed the petition to ban Indian citizens from collaborating with Pakistani artists. Fawad’s last Bollywood film was Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016).

US

WASHINGTON: A U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesperson side-stepped a question about India’s refusal to send its team for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy to be played in Pakistan, it emphasized that sports connects people and is a “great way” to promote people-to-people ties.

Replying to a question from a Pakistani correspondent about the Indian cricket board’s decision not to allow its team to travel to Pakistan, Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel said he would not comment on the issue since it relates to the relations between India and Pakistan, and “that is certainly for them to speak to, whether it be through sports or other things.”

“You have seen this Secretary (of State Antony Blinken), this department prioritize the role that sports diplomacy has in connecting people,” he told the daily news briefing.

“And at the end of the day, sports connects so many people, and it’s a great way for those human-to-human and people-to-people ties that this administration has really prioritized,” Patel added.

The ICC Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan from February 19 to March 09. Due to strained political relations, India has not played cricket in Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup.

Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi recently opened up about a memorable piece of advice she received early in her career from filmmaker David Dhawan.

In an interview with Mashable India, the Gangs of Wasseypur actress reflected on her journey and the constant conversations about body positivity in Bollywood, where actresses are often trolled for gaining weight.

Huma shared that shortly after her 2012 debut film hit the screens, she bumped into David Dhawan at a cafe in Mumbai. She was thrilled when the Judwaa director recognized her and initiated a conversation. During their chat, Dhawan offered her some valuable advice about ignoring societal pressures related to body image.

“He said, ‘Beta, you are a very good actor. Tereko bahaut log bolenge weight loss karle, surgery karle, kuch nahi karna,'” Huma recalled, translating to: “A lot of people will ask you to lose weight, get surgery done, don’t do any of it.” Dhawan assured her that since the audience had accepted her in her debut role, she didn’t need to change herself for others.

Huma found the advice uplifting, noting, “And that coming from industry seniors… you just write it down: ‘Yeh bhoolna nahi hai.'”

Huma, a strong advocate for body positivity, also produced the film Double XL in 2022, which dealt with similar issues. She will next appear in Jolly LLB 3 alongside Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi.

Badshah in legal trouble over allegations of non-payment

Badshah
  • Badshah is now facing a lawsuit from a media company.
  • Badshah has failed to settle payments owed by the company.
  • The complaint claims that he continuously postponed deadlines.

Rapper and singer Badshah is now facing a lawsuit from a media company over allegations of non-payment of agreed fees for his hit song Baawla.

According to the media company, all services for the production and promotion of the track were fulfilled, yet he has failed to settle payments owed for the project.

As reported by IANS, the case was filed in Karnal District Court under CNR Number HRKR010130502024 and Case Number ARB 47/2024. The complainants claimed that despite multiple payment reminders, Badshah provided “false assurances” and continuously postponed deadlines without making any actual payments.

The song Baawla, featuring Badshah and Amit Uchana, has garnered over 151 million views on YouTube since its release. The media company contends that their marketing efforts significantly boosted Badshah’s public image and brand, but they remain unpaid for their work.

This isn’t the first time he has faced legal trouble. Last year, he was summoned by Maharashtra Police’s Cyber Cell for promoting the online betting app FairPlay. His lawyer, Prashant Patil, clarified that Badshah was summoned as a witness, not an accused, in an investigation regarding copyright infringement. Patil added that Badshah had provided evidence to show his non-involvement in illegal activities and would continue to coBadshah operate with authorities if required.

Cardi B addresses rumors of receiving payment for appearing in Kamala Harris’ rally

Cardi B
  • Cardi B addressed claims about receiving payment from Kamala Harris.
  • Candace Owens questioned whether she was paid for her involvement.
  • She revealed that she even covered her own expenses for travel and glam.

Cardi B has addressed recent claims about receiving payment for her appearance at a Kamala Harris rally, firmly denying that she was compensated by the campaign.

The rapper’s response came after conservative commentator Candace Owens questioned whether she was paid for her involvement. “I didn’t get paid a dollar and that’s on my three,”

Cardi B said, adding that she even covered her own expenses for travel and glam. “You know damn well I’ll argue you down about politics FOR FREE,” she added, asserting her commitment to political activism.

The rapper had spoken at Harris’ Milwaukee, Wisconsin rally during the 2024 presidential election campaign, where she compared her own experiences as an underdog to that of Kamala Harris. “Like Kamala Harris, I’ve been the underdog, underestimated, and had my success belittled,” Cardi said during her speech.

Despite the efforts of Hollywood elites and celebrities like Cardi B, Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande, Harris ultimately lost the election to Donald Trump, who secured a second non-consecutive term.

Cardi B, in a post-election message, expressed admiration for Harris, saying, “No one has ever made me change my mind and you did! You have shown my daughters and women across the country that anything is possible.”

In related news, Oprah Winfrey also denied receiving payment for hosting a celebrity town hall with Harris, stating, “I was paid nothing – ever.”

Pakistan warns of Chaos in war hit Palestine after ban on UNRWA

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has told a UN panel that the Israeli legislation to shut down UNRWA, the main lifeline for Palestine refugees in Gaza, will plunge millions of Palestinians into chaos, and called on the international community to throw its weight behind the U.N. agency.

“The demonization and delegitimization of UNRWA must be halted and we must take concrete measures to ensure that UNRWA remains operational and carries out its humanitarian work in accordance with its mandate,” Pakistani delegate Ansar Shah said during a debate in the General Assembly’s Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization).

The Israeli Parliament, known as the Knesset, adopted two bills earlier this month banning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from operating in its territory and prohibiting authorities from having any contact with it.

“The international community must uphold the principles of justice, human rights, and international law to restore hope and dignity to the Palestinian people,” Ansar Shah, a first secretary in the Pakistani Mission to the UN, said.

Pakistan had strongly condemned the Israeli attempts to dismantle the operations of the UNRWA as” flagrant violation of the UN Charter, international law, provisional measures: set by the ICJ (International Court of Justice) and the Court’s Advisory Opinion of 19 July.

Shah highlighted the grave concerns of millions of Palestinians’ that the Israeli move would cutoff essential public services on which their lives depend such as education, health, and social support.

“The entire population of Gaza fears that their only remaining lifeline will be cut. Without the intervention by Member States, UNRWA will collapse, plunging millions of Palestinians into chaos.

” We have to answer the call of Palestinian people,” the Pakistani delegate added.

He warned that the international order built on the basis of the UN Charter could collapse if the international community did not take concrete actions to uphold the Charter and the international law.
