Pakistan’s resolution reaffirming peoples right to self-determination adopted unanimously

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: A key UN panel approved, by consensus, a resolution renewing the global commitment to the principle of self-determination for peoples still subjected to colonial, foreign and alien occupation, with Pakistan saying that it’s focus was on creating a world where everyone could live in “dignity, free from oppression”.

Co-sponsored by 65 countries, the resolution, submitted by Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram, was adopted without a vote in the General Assembly’s Third Committee, which deals with social, humanitarian and cultural issues.

The resolution, which Pakistan has been sponsoring since 1981, serves to focus the world’s attention on the peoples still struggling for their inalienable right to self-determination, including those in Palestine and Kashmir.

The text is expected to come up for General Assembly’s endorsement next month.

Under its terms, the 193 member Assembly would declare its firm opposition to acts of foreign military intervention and occupation suppressing the right to self-determination of peoples and nations, calling upon those States responsible to cease them.

Introducing the resolution, Ambassador Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, said that it was aimed at “creating a world where every nation, every community, and every individual can live in dignity, free from oppression, and with the ability to shape their destiny.”

The right of self-determination, as a fundamental principle enshrined in the UN Charter, has been codified in many international documents, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Covenant on Social and Cultural Rights, the Pakistani envoy said.

Over the decades, he said, millions of people have exercised this right, liberating themselves from colonial domination and foreign subjugation, creating numerous sovereign states which are now equal members of this Assembly.

“However,” Ambassador Akram added, “those of us who have been freed through the exercise of right of self-determination cannot ignore the plight of those whose right to self-determination and freedom has been denied brutally.

“In certain situations of foreign occupation, we witness a systematic denial of self-determination through military oppression, demographic manipulation, and the suppression of basic freedoms,” he said, pointing out that those actions violate international law and pose a threat to international peace and security.

Pakistan warns of Chaos in war hit Palestine after ban on UNRWA

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has told a UN panel that the Israeli legislation to shut down UNRWA, the main lifeline for Palestine refugees in Gaza, will plunge millions of Palestinians into chaos, and called on the international community to throw its weight behind the U.N. agency.

“The demonization and delegitimization of UNRWA must be halted and we must take concrete measures to ensure that UNRWA remains operational and carries out its humanitarian work in accordance with its mandate,” Pakistani delegate Ansar Shah said during a debate in the General Assembly’s Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization).

The Israeli Parliament, known as the Knesset, adopted two bills earlier this month banning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from operating in its territory and prohibiting authorities from having any contact with it.

“The international community must uphold the principles of justice, human rights, and international law to restore hope and dignity to the Palestinian people,” Ansar Shah, a first secretary in the Pakistani Mission to the UN, said.

Pakistan had strongly condemned the Israeli attempts to dismantle the operations of the UNRWA as” flagrant violation of the UN Charter, international law, provisional measures: set by the ICJ (International Court of Justice) and the Court’s Advisory Opinion of 19 July.

Shah highlighted the grave concerns of millions of Palestinians’ that the Israeli move would cutoff essential public services on which their lives depend such as education, health, and social support.

“The entire population of Gaza fears that their only remaining lifeline will be cut. Without the intervention by Member States, UNRWA will collapse, plunging millions of Palestinians into chaos.

” We have to answer the call of Palestinian people,” the Pakistani delegate added.

He warned that the international order built on the basis of the UN Charter could collapse if the international community did not take concrete actions to uphold the Charter and the international law.

UN panel adopts Pakistani resolutions on strengthening regional, world peace

UN panel

UNITED NATIONS: A key committee of the UN General Assembly has adopted Pakistan’s four annual disarmament-related resolutions that are aimed at underpinning regional as well as international peace and security, reflecting Islamabad’s commitment to achieving those goals.

Three of these resolutions, adopted by the 193-nation Assembly’s First Committee (Disarmament and International Security), received overwhelming support from member states even as the global non-proliferation and disarmament regime is facing challenges. The texts are expected to come up for endorsement by the General Assembly next month.

The resolutions deal with regional disarmament, conventional arms control at regional and subregional levels as well as Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) in the regional and subregional context.

The resolutions titled, “Regional disarmament” and “Confidence-building Measures in the regional and sub-regional context” were adopted by consensus.

The text titled, “Conventional arms control at the regional and sub-regional level” received 179 votes in favour, with India voting against, the only country to do so, and its ally — Israel — abstained.

The overwhelming support for the resolution reflected the international community’s acknowledgement of Pakistan’s advocacy for conventional arms control, restraint and balance in defence capabilities of States located in the same region or sub-region.

Diplomats at the UN have expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s initiatives, over the years, to promote the goals of regional disarmament, conventional arms control, and Confidence Building Measures (CBMs).

The resolutions, they noted, recognize the significance of and complementarity between regional and global approaches to arms control, disarmament and confidence building to promote international peace, security and stability

The resolution on conventional arms control at regional and subregional levels acknowledges that the preservation of a balance in States’ defence capabilities strengthens peace and stability.

India using enforced disappearances in Kashmir as ‘tool of oppression’: Sarfraz Gohar

India

UNITED NATIONS: Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding citizens’ rights, Pakistan has told a UN panel that authorities in Indian Occupied Kashmir were systematically using enforced disappearances as “a tool of oppression” to stifle the voice of Kashmiri people.

“While Pakistan remains vigilant in addressing cases of enforced disappearances domestically, we cannot overlook the alarming situation in conflict zones, especially in areas under foreign occupation,” Pakistani delegate Sarfraz Gohar said during an interactive Dialogue with the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances held in the UN General Assembly’s third committee, which deals with social, humanitarian and cultural issues.

“For decades,” he said, “the Kashmiri people have endured an environment of fear and violence, where enforced disappearances have become a hallmark of the occupying forces’ repression.”

Gohar, a first secretary in the Pakistan Mission to the UN, said enforced disappearances were not isolated incidents, but often led to further abuses, including torture, extrajudicial killings, and mass graves.

Over 8,000 individuals have disappeared without a trace, he said, citing reputed human rights organizations. Since 5 Aug. 2019 when India annexed Kashmir, an additional 15,000 young men have been subjected to enforced disappearances, exacerbating the climate of fear.

“The existence of thousands of unmarked graves, which remain un-investigated by the occupation authorities, highlight the prevailing culture of impunity,” the Pakistani delegate added.

He called for an international oversight — as recommended by the UN’s rights office — to ensure justice for the families of the disappeared, including the thousands of “half-widows” who continue to suffer without knowledge of their loved ones’ fate.

On its part, Gohar said Pakistan is firmly committed to safeguarding the rights of its citizens and ensuring that no individual is subjected to arbitrary detention or enforced disappearance. The right to personal liberty, which is guaranteed under the country’s Constitution, is a cornerstone of Pakistan’s legal framework, and “we continue to take tangible steps to prevent and address any cases of enforced disappearances that may surface”.
