Pakistan warns of Chaos in war hit Palestine after ban on UNRWA

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has told a UN panel that the Israeli legislation to shut down UNRWA, the main lifeline for Palestine refugees in Gaza, will plunge millions of Palestinians into chaos, and called on the international community to throw its weight behind the U.N. agency.

“The demonization and delegitimization of UNRWA must be halted and we must take concrete measures to ensure that UNRWA remains operational and carries out its humanitarian work in accordance with its mandate,” Pakistani delegate Ansar Shah said during a debate in the General Assembly’s Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization).

The Israeli Parliament, known as the Knesset, adopted two bills earlier this month banning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from operating in its territory and prohibiting authorities from having any contact with it.

“The international community must uphold the principles of justice, human rights, and international law to restore hope and dignity to the Palestinian people,” Ansar Shah, a first secretary in the Pakistani Mission to the UN, said.

Pakistan had strongly condemned the Israeli attempts to dismantle the operations of the UNRWA as” flagrant violation of the UN Charter, international law, provisional measures: set by the ICJ (International Court of Justice) and the Court’s Advisory Opinion of 19 July.

Shah highlighted the grave concerns of millions of Palestinians’ that the Israeli move would cutoff essential public services on which their lives depend such as education, health, and social support.

“The entire population of Gaza fears that their only remaining lifeline will be cut. Without the intervention by Member States, UNRWA will collapse, plunging millions of Palestinians into chaos.

” We have to answer the call of Palestinian people,” the Pakistani delegate added.

He warned that the international order built on the basis of the UN Charter could collapse if the international community did not take concrete actions to uphold the Charter and the international law.

Pakistan calls for end to inhumane blockade of Gaza

Pakistan
  • Pakistan deeply concerned on fast-deteriorating situation in Gaza.
  • The decision to cut off electricity and water supplies is unjust.
  • Pakistan constantly warning against serious consequences of Israel’s escalatory.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday strongly condemning the indiscriminate use of force by Israeli authorities in Gaza, called for an end to the “inhumane” blockade causing the humanitarian situation, besides urging the United Nations’ proactive role in facilitating a ceasefire.

“We are deeply concerned about the fast-deteriorating and dire humanitarian situation in Gaza due to the inhumane blockade and collective punishment by Israeli forces. The decision to cut off electricity, fuel and water supplies is unjust and should be reversed, as it would severely impact the lives of the Palestinians residing in the enclave,” Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said in her press briefing.

She said the unprecedented gravity of the situation demanded urgent intervention by the international community. “We urge the United Nations to play a proactive role in facilitating a ceasefire to alleviate the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza,” she said. She called upon Israel to bring an immediate end to its campaign of indiscriminate bombing against the people of Gaza. “It should fulfill its obligations as an occupying power under international law, lift the blockade and allow unhindered access to humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people,” the spokesperson remarked.

She said the current cycle of aggression and violence was a sad reminder and a direct consequence of over seven decades of illegal foreign occupation, aggression, and disrespect for international law, including UNSC resolutions that recognized the inalienable right to self-determination of the Palestinian people. Pakistan has been constantly warning against serious consequences of Israel’s escalatory and provocative actions in recent months, she added.

Spokesperson Baloch called for the international community’s role for a just, comprehensive, and lasting two-state solution with a viable, sovereign and contiguous State of Palestine on the basis of pre-1967 borders, with Al Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

Syria reports five deaths following an Israeli attack on Damascus

Syria
  • Syria’s military says five people were killed on Sunday.
  • Israeli rockets targeted Damascus and neighboring suburbs.
  • Israel’s military declined to comment on the strike.

Syria’s military says five people were killed on Sunday after what it claims were Israeli rockets targeted Damascus and neighboring suburbs.

According to officials, a structure in the central Kafr Sousa neighborhood was hit, killing four civilians and one military.

A massive, heavily guarded security complex is located in the densely inhabited district.

When contacted by sources, Israel’s military declined to comment on the strike.

Israel bombs locations in Syria linked to Iran and Hezbollah fighters on a regular basis but rarely acknowledges its operations.

The attack on Sunday was the first since a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated the country’s northwest, as well as sections of neighboring Turkey, 12 days ago.

Senior authorities and security agencies live in the Kafr Sousa region, as do people who live in residential complexes.

The strike, which occurred at 00:22 local time (21:22 GMT), damaged many residences in Damascus neighborhoods and other neighboring locations, according to Syrian sources.

According to the country’s defense ministry, the missiles were launched from the Golan Heights, a rugged plateau southwest of Damascus that Israel occupied in 1981.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in London, put the death toll at 15, including civilians.

“The strike on Sunday is the deadliest Israeli attack in the Syrian capital,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Observatory.

That comes after an Israeli strike on Damascus’ international airport killed four people, including two troops, according to the Syrian army.

Israel has already admitted that it strikes the bases of Iranian-aligned armed groups.

The two countries are arch-foes and have been engaged in a “shadow war” of unclaimed attacks against each other’s properties, infrastructure, and nationals in recent years.

Palestinian ministry: Israeli troops kill teen in West Bank raid

Palestinian
  • Hamza Amjad al-Ashqar, 17, was killed by a gunshot in the face.
  • Ashqar was from the Askar refugee camp in Nablus.
  • A military spokeswoman was unable to immediately identify the weapon used by the armed suspect.

NABLUS – Israeli troops killed a Palestinian teenager in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus on Tuesday, according to the Palestinian health ministry, with the Israeli army alleging he fired on soldiers.

Hamza Amjad al-Ashqar, 17, was “killed by a gunshot in the face fired by occupation (Israeli) soldiers during the onslaught on Nablus,” according to the ministry.

The Israeli army claimed troops had “responded with live fire towards an armed suspect who fired at them”.

“A hit was identified,” the army said in a statement, adding that “rocks, explosive devices, and Molotov cocktails were hurled at the soldiers” conducting the raid.

A military spokeswoman was unable to immediately identify the weapon used by the armed suspect.

According to a Palestinian security source who was not authorized to speak to the media, Ashqar was from the Askar refugee camp in Nablus.

According to the source, three persons were arrested during the Israeli raid on the city.

Ashqar was not a member of any Palestinian organization.

Separately, the official Palestinian news agency said that approximately 20 Palestinians were detained in Burqin, near the flashpoint city of Jenin.

A fresh wave of Israeli incursions in West Bank towns and cities has resulted in an increasing death toll.

After a days-long search for suspects in a shooting at a restaurant near Jericho, Israeli forces killed five suspected Palestinian gunmen in a raid on Monday.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has claimed the lives of 42 Palestinians since the beginning of the year, including assailants, terrorists, and bystanders. During the same time period, six Israeli civilians, including a child, and one Ukrainian civilian were killed.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since the 1967 Six-Day War.

Israeli forces kill Palestinian trying to escape arrest

Israeli forces
  • The man has been identified as Rafiq Riyad Ghannem, 20.
  • He was shot by Israeli troops in Jaba, near the flashpoint city of Jenin.
  • A 17-year-old Palestinian died after being shot a day earlier in another Israeli army raid.

Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday while he was attempting to flee an army raid, according to both sides.

The Palestinian health ministry identified the man as Rafiq Riyad Ghannem, 20, and said he was shot by Israeli troops in Jaba, a town in the northern West Bank near the flashpoint city of Jenin.

Israel’s military said it had conducted “counterterrorism activity” in Jaba early on Wednesday.

“The soldiers operated according to arrest procedures, which included the use of live fire toward a suspect who was attempting to flee the scene. A hit was identified,” the army said.

“The soldiers provided medical treatment to the suspect, who was later pronounced dead. The incident is under review,” the army added.

The military said that it had arrested 24 suspects and seized a number of weapons in “extensive” overnight operations across the occupied West Bank.

On Sunday, a 17-year-old Palestinian died after being shot a day earlier in another Israeli army raid in the same town.

At least 50 Palestinians have been killed since late March, mostly in the West Bank, among them suspected militants and non-combatants.

Following a series of attacks in Israel in recent months, Israeli security forces have launched nearly daily raids in the West Bank.

Nineteen people have been killed, mostly Israeli civilians, in attacks carried out by Palestinians and Israeli Arabs. Three other Arab Israeli attackers were also killed.

Israel parliament dissolves, sets fifth election in less than four years

Israel parliament
  • Israel’s parliament dissolves forcing country to hold its fifth election in four years.
  • Yair Lapid takes over as caretaker prime minister at midnight.
  • Raam party chief Mansour Abbas says his party will continue advocating for Arab society.

Israeli lawmakers dissolved parliament on Thursday forcing the country to hold its fifth election in less than four years, with Foreign Minister Yair Lapid taking over as caretaker prime minister at midnight.

The centrist Lapid embraced outgoing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, whose year in charge of an unwieldy eight-party coalition was ultimately undone by ideological divisions.

Lapid, whose Hungarian-born father survived the Holocaust, went immediately to Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial centre after the parliament vote.

“There, I promised my late father that I will always keep Israel strong and capable of defending itself and protecting its children,” the 58-year-old said in a statement.

The newly called election set for November 1 marks another sign that Israel remains mired in an unprecedented era of political gridlock, with early opinion polls indicating the results may again be inconclusive.

The religious-nationalist Bennett has said he will not contest the vote and is stepping back from politics, tweeting the Hebrew word “Toda” (thank you), after lawmakers sealed his departure from office. He later hosted Lapid for a short handover ceremony.

Hawkish former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has assured that he and his allies — extreme-right nationalists and ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties — will finally rally a majority, following what he described on Thursday as a “failed (coalition) experiment”.
