A defiant Andean bear escapes from a US zoo twice

Andean bear
  • Andean bear got out again on Thursday afternoon.
  • These bears are only found in South America.
  • Ben returned to the zoo after 50 minutes of freedom.

The Saint Louis Zoo’s new security measures in this Andean bear‘s habitat were no match for his daring personality.

Ben, the four-year-old bear who escaped his enclosure earlier this month on February 7, got out again on Thursday afternoon.

Andean bears are only found in South America, however, they are endangered owing to habitat loss and hunting.

Ben has returned to the zoo after 50 minutes of freedom.

The zoo claims he tampered with the steel mesh of his outside home, “causing a cable to give way, which subsequently allowed him to work his way out” during his previous escape.

In response, zoo staff “made the habitat even more secure by adding stainless steel cargo clips rated at 450 pounds tensile strength”, but of course, that still “wasn’t enough for Ben”.

The Zoo Animal Emergency Response methodology was implemented after they found Ben had once again escaped, and he was secured in just under an hour from “start to finish”.

It was quicker than Ben’s capture on February 7th, which took nearly an hour and a half.

The zoo says they know Ben is “young and adventurous” and will continue to “investigate other alternative ways to secure the habitat”, they said in a statement

Nigerians vote in a heated presidential election

Nigerians
  • The election is taking place alongside voting for representatives in the country’s parliament.
  • Ballots will be counted at polling stations at the end of voting.
  • A candidate must receive enough votes to achieve the 25% vote spread in 24 of Nigeria’s 36 states.

Nigerians will vote in a key presidential election to determine the country’s next leader. The closely contested election is taking place alongside voting for representatives in the country’s parliament.

According to INEC, around 93 million Nigerians are registered to vote, but only 87 million have a permanent voter card (PVC), which is required to vote.

The polls will open at 8:30 a.m. local time and conclude at 2:30 p.m. (or 2:30 a.m. ET Saturday to 8:30 a.m. ET). Nonetheless, those who are in line to vote by the deadline will be allowed to vote, according to INEC.

Ballots will be counted at polling stations at the end of voting and electronically transferred in real-time to INEC’s Result Viewing platform (IReV), a first in Nigeria.

“With the electronic transmission system (IREV), people will already know the winners before the official announcement is made,” adds Rotimi Oyekanmi, a spokesman for INEC’s chairperson.

To win, a candidate must receive enough votes to achieve the 25% vote spread in 24 of Nigeria’s 36 states. In the absence of this, the top two candidates will face off in a second-round run-off within 21 days.

What to do if you mistakenly add extra salt while cooking? Balance it with these simple tricks

salt
  • There are numerous ways to counteract too much salt in a dish.
  • Pankaj Bhadouria is a well-known chef and the winner of MasterChef India.
  • This will lessen the salt flavour.

The amount of salt used in a meal has a significant impact on its flavour. As a result, it is always recommended to use salt sparingly when cooking. While a dish’s lack of salt can be quickly remedied by doubling the amount of the ingredient, an excessive amount of salt becomes problematic. The circumstance is, nonetheless, rather typical. A lot of the time, we wind up ruining a dish’s flavour and all our hard work in preparing it by adding more salt than is necessary.

Don’t worry the next time you find yourself in a similar circumstance. But there are numerous ways to counteract too much salt in a dish. Curious as to what they are? Continue reading!

Tip 2: For recipes using dried foods

One of the greatest methods to counteract too much salt in dry vegetable recipes like aloo-gobhi is to add lemon juice, diced tomatoes, or tomato puree. Addition of curd is an additional option, as proposed by chef Bhadouria.

Medvedev of Russia proposes to push Poland’s boundaries

Russia
  • Medvedev made the remarks in a message on his Telegram account.
  • The best way for Moscow to achieve long-term peace with Ukraine was to push hostile governments’ boundaries back.
  • He stated that the accord would lack “basic agreements on real borders.”

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated on Friday that the best way for Moscow to achieve long-term peace with Ukraine was to push hostile governments’ boundaries back as far as possible, including NATO member Poland’s.

Medvedev made the remarks in a message on his Telegram account, exactly a year after Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in what it dubbed a “special military operation” to defend Russian speakers and maintain its own security.

Ukraine claims to be defending itself against an unprovoked colonial-style attack and has threatened to recover all of its own territories by force, including Crimea, which Russia invaded in 2014.

On Friday, Medvedev, a close supporter of President Vladimir Putin, predicted that Russia would win and that a loose deal would eventually put an end to the war.

“Victory will be achieved. We all want it to happen as soon as possible. And that day will come,” said Medvedev. He predicted that tough negotiations with Ukraine and the West would follow that would culminate in “some kind of agreement.”

However, he stated that the accord would lack “basic agreements on real borders” and would not amount to an overarching European security treaty, making it critical for Russia to extend its own borders immediately.

“That is why it is critical to achieving all of the special military operation’s objectives. To drive back as far as possible the borders that endanger our country, even if they are Polish borders, “Medvedev stated.

Poland shares extensive eastern borders with Ukraine and Russia’s ally Belarus, as well as a 200-kilometer (125-mile) border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad in its northeastern corner.

Any expansion on Poland’s borders would put Moscow in direct conflict with NATO for the first time. At a speech this week in Warsaw, US President Joseph Biden committed to defending “every inch” of NATO territory if it was attacked.

Since the start of the war, Medvedev, 57, has taken an increasingly belligerent tone and made a number of loud comments, with some political observers speculating he is one of the persons Putin may one day consider as a successor.

Turkish journalists arrested over earthquake reports

Turkish
  • Mir Ali Koçer publicized survivor and rescuer stories on Twitter.
  • He is now being investigated for creating “false news” and could face up to three years in prison.
  • He is one of at least four journalists being probed for reporting or commenting on the earthquake.

Mir Ali Koçer, a freelance journalist, was 200 miles from the epicenter when Turkey was struck by a catastrophic earthquake on February 6. He drove down to the impacted area with his camera and microphone in hand to interview survivors.

He publicized survivor and rescuer stories on Twitter and is now being investigated for creating “false news” and could face up to three years in prison.

He is one of at least four journalists being probed for reporting or commenting on the earthquake.

Hundreds more, according to press freedom organizations, have been arrested, harassed, or prohibited from reporting.

Earthquakes in both Turkey and Syria killed at least 50,000 people.

The Turkish authorities have made no statement on the detentions.

I couldn’t hold back my tears

Mr. Koçer, who is Kurdish and contributes to pro-opposition news sites such as Bianet and Duvar, was smoking on his balcony in the south-eastern city of Diyarbakir on the night of the earthquake when his two dogs began barking.

He recalls them barking exactly like that in 2020, seconds before a minor earthquake shook eastern Turkey.

“I felt I was shaking. I felt the house shaking, I felt the TV shaking,” says Mr. Koçer. He hid under a dinner table with the dogs and then rushed outside.

Mr. Koçer left Diyarbakir and drove to the city of Gaziantep. He was shocked by scenes of destruction and victims enduring freezing temperatures in towns near the very epicenter of the quake.

At least 3,000 of the earthquake’s victims died in Gaziantep.

“When holding the microphone, behind the camera, or in front of the camera, I could not hold back my tears,” Mr. Koçer recalls.

Provocateurs

The surge of volunteers and rescue teams from Western Turkey moved Mr. Koçer, and he shared their stories on Twitter. Several of the survivors told him they had gone days without receiving assistance. Similar allegations were made by pro-opposition news outlets.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told people in earthquake-affected areas that he would reconstruct their cities. But he also warned that individuals propagating “fake news” and “causing social disorder” would be jailed, labeling them “provocateurs”.

Mr. Koçer claims that while he was reporting from the earthquake-affected zone, Diyarbakir police placed a message at his residence telling him to go to the police station and make a statement.

He was informed at the station that he was being probed under a freshly enacted misinformation statute. He claimed that the police questioned him about his reporting from the epicenter of the earthquake and accused him of spreading fake information.

Turkey’s new law went into effect in October. It criminalized public deception and allowed the state considerably broader control over news outlets and social media.

The Venice Commission, the Council of Europe’s legal watchdog, warned the bill would limit freedom of expression.

It is referred to as a “censorship law” by opposition parties.

‘They don’t like criticism’

Mr. Koçer says that he was diligent in his job, interviewing everyone from survivors to police, gendarmes, and rescue workers. “I did not release anything without first conducting extensive research and analysis,” he says.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemned the probe into Mr. Koçer as “absurd” and demanded authorities discontinue it.

At least three more journalists are facing criminal accusations, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an advocacy group.

Merdan Yanarda and Enver Aysever are well-known political analysts in Istanbul with substantial social media followings. Both have criticized the government’s efforts to save the country. Both are being investigated, as is Mehmet Güleş, who, like Mr Koçer, is located in Diyarbakir. He was arrested on accusations of “inciting hatred” after questioning a volunteer who was critical of him.

It is unknown how many additional journalists are being investigated. The police stated on Tuesday that they detained 134 people for “provocative posts” and arrested 25 of them, although their identities were not released. Some of those jailed may have been spreading lies, such as the one that Afghan migrants were scavenging in devastated neighborhoods.

But, critics claim that the crackdown has gone well beyond those propagating dangerous misinformation.

“The government is trying to suppress information coming from the quake zone,” says cyber rights expert Yaman Akdeniz who teaches at the Istanbul Bilgi University.

The arrests came after Turkey’s presidential communications director warned against “lethal disinformation” jeopardizing the rescue efforts. The directorate also rolled out a smartphone app called “Disinformation Reporting Service” encouraging people to report manipulative posts about the quake.

“Any time [Turkish] officials and the government are being criticized, they don’t like it,” says Arzu Geybulla, a journalist in Istanbul covering digital authoritarianism and censorship.

“But this time they are perhaps more vocal.”
