SHC orders to not count reserved seats votes in presidential election

SHC

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court(SHC) has issued an order to not count the votes of three reserved seats in the presidential election.

The court issued a short verdict on Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) petition for reserved seats.

PPP’s Smita Afzal, MQM Fauzia Hameed and PPP’s minority seat Surendar Valasai took oath yesterday.

However, today the SHC issued a written order in the case of not giving reserved seats to the Sunni Ittehad Council in the Sindh Assembly.

The court order states that in the presidential election, the court does not want to interfere in the process of voting by the members of the Sindh Assembly in favor of their favorite candidate, however, these three votes of the Sindh Assembly should not be considered as decisive votes. Until the final decision of the application is made.

According to the order, Advocate General Sindh has objected to the admissibility of the petition.

The court has asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), MQM Pakistan, PPP to respond on March 28.

On the other hand, the Sindh government is of the opinion that the three members of the Sindh Assemblies have taken oath on March 7 and the petition has become ineffective.

Mahmood Achakzai demands ECP to postpone presidential election

Achakzai

ISLAMABAD: Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the candidate of the Sunni Ittehad Council(SIC) in the presidential election, demanded the postponement of the presidential election.

Mahmood Khan Achakzai, head of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, has also written a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding the postponement of the presidential election.

Mahmood Khan Achakzai has said in his letter that many reserved seats of national and provincial assemblies are still vacant and the election should be postponed until the Electoral College is completed.

It should be remembered that the Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) announced the presidential election on March 9, for which the nomination papers of Asif Ali Zardari of the Pakistan People’s Party and Mahmood Khan Achakzai of the Sunni Ittehad Council have been approved.

The statement of Maulana Fazal ur Rehman, the head of Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI), also surfaced in this regard, in which he said that he wishes to vote for Mahmood Khan Achakzai in the presidential election, but the party’s decision is obligatory that he does not vote.

On the other hand, Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan has decided to vote for Pakistan People’s Party candidate Asif Ali Zardari in the presidential election.

Bola Tinubu defeats Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi in Nigeria’s presidential election

Bola Tinubu
  • Bola Tinubu won the presidential election.
  • Atiku Abubakar, received 29% of the vote, while Labour’s Peter Obi received 25%.
  • He was not expected to win the party primary, yet he won.

Nigeria’s disputed presidential election has been declared won by ruling party candidate Bola Tinubu.

According to official findings, the 70-year-old experienced lawmaker received 37% of the vote.

His primary rival, Atiku Abubakar, received 29% of the vote, while Labour’s Peter Obi received 25%. These parties had already called the election a fraud and requested a rerun.

Mr. Tinubu is one of Nigeria’s wealthiest politicians, and his candidature is predicated on his record of rebuilding the country’s largest metropolis, Lagos, while he was governor.

He was ultimately beaten in the city by Mr. Obi, a relative newcomer who mobilized the support of many young people, especially in urban areas, shaking up the country’s two-party system.

Mr. Tinubu won the majority of the other states in his home region of the southwest, where he is renowned as a “political godfather” – someone who helps others get elected.

He campaigned for the presidency using the slogan: “It’s my turn”.

Mr. Tinubu urged reconciliation with his opponents in his acceptance address.

“I take this opportunity to appeal to my fellow contestants to let us team up together. It is the only nation we have. It is one country and we must build it together,” he said in a televised speech to the nation.

He said that they had the right to challenge the results in court but said that the lapses in the election “were relatively few in number and were immaterial to affect the outcome of this election”.

President Muhammadu Buhari is leaving office after two terms marked by economic stagnation and escalating insecurity across the country, ranging from an Islamic insurgency in the north-east to a statewide problem of abduction for ransom and separatist strikes in the south-east.

Mr. Tinubu now has the burden of tackling these problems, among others, in Africa’s most populous nation and greatest oil exporter.

Mr. Tinubu would believe that he was destined to become president after opposing military rule in Nigeria, fleeing into exile, and becoming one of the founding members of the country’s democracy in 1999.

He was always the favorite to succeed Mr. Buhari, whom he assisted in becoming president, and the obstacles he overcame to get here will make this victory more sweeter for him.

He was not expected to win the party primary, yet he won.

Nigerians vote in a heated presidential election

Nigerians
  • The election is taking place alongside voting for representatives in the country’s parliament.
  • Ballots will be counted at polling stations at the end of voting.
  • A candidate must receive enough votes to achieve the 25% vote spread in 24 of Nigeria’s 36 states.

Nigerians will vote in a key presidential election to determine the country’s next leader. The closely contested election is taking place alongside voting for representatives in the country’s parliament.

According to INEC, around 93 million Nigerians are registered to vote, but only 87 million have a permanent voter card (PVC), which is required to vote.

The polls will open at 8:30 a.m. local time and conclude at 2:30 p.m. (or 2:30 a.m. ET Saturday to 8:30 a.m. ET). Nonetheless, those who are in line to vote by the deadline will be allowed to vote, according to INEC.

Ballots will be counted at polling stations at the end of voting and electronically transferred in real-time to INEC’s Result Viewing platform (IReV), a first in Nigeria.

“With the electronic transmission system (IREV), people will already know the winners before the official announcement is made,” adds Rotimi Oyekanmi, a spokesman for INEC’s chairperson.

To win, a candidate must receive enough votes to achieve the 25% vote spread in 24 of Nigeria’s 36 states. In the absence of this, the top two candidates will face off in a second-round run-off within 21 days.
