Wahab Riaz of Peshawar Zalmi believes that a bowler should be conscious of his strengths and flaws, particularly in T20 cricket.

When he sent out Islamabad United batter Danish Aziz last year, he became the only bowler in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) to surpass the 100-wicket mark.

The 37-year-old is also the league’s most-capped player, having made 77 appearances for Zalmi in all seven seasons.

Speaking ahead of PSL 8, Riaz stated that regular matches can teach crucial lessons.

“As a bowler, you should be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. You should know how to bowl according to each phase of the innings. The more matches you play and the more experience you gain, you learn important lessons with the exposure,” Riaz told PCB Digital.

“I keep things very simple in T20s. It is necessary you realize that batters will attack and you can go for runs, but you need to trust the process and not forget the basics,” he added.

Riaz gave up 47 runs in four overs on Sunday in Quetta during an exhibition match between the Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar. Iftikhar Ahmed hit him for six sixes in the final over of the innings.

Opening Ceremony

The PSL 8 opening ceremony will take place on February 13 in Multan, preparatory to the tournament opener between the 2021 winners Multan Sultans and the defending champions Lahore Qalandars; the closing ceremony and final will take place on March 19 in Lahore, which will also host play-offs.

Lahore Qalandars will try to become the first team to win back-to-back championships, while Islamabad United will try to become the most successful team by winning the trophy three times.

Rawalpindi will host 11 games, while Karachi and Lahore will each host nine, and Multan will host five.

Saudi Arabia to remain cautious on oil output

Saudi Arabia‘s energy minister reaffirmed that the country will be careful about increasing oil production, despite the fact that numerous prominent analysts predict that increased demand will cause prices to rise soon.

“I will believe it when I see it and then take action,” Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said in Riyadh.

The minister told energy historian Daniel Yergin that OPEC+’s agreement to limit output by two million barrels per day in October had proven justified. The move sparked outrage in the United States, which claimed that the world economy needs more crude supplies, however, tensions have since subsided.

“If people had trusted us then, we wouldn’t have undergone the trepidations that happened,” he said, referring to a spike in prices to almost $100 a barrel after OPEC+ – a 23-nation group led by Saudi Arabia and Russia – announced its move.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February, Brent rose to around $130 per barrel. It has since fallen below $80 per barrel, owing to rising interest rates and a strong dollar, which has caused an economic slowdown.

Fear of sanctions

Nonetheless, the oil market remains constrained. According to Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Brent will rise again above $100 per barrel in the third quarter due to low stocks and spare capacity among producers. Morgan Stanley has made a similar prediction.

The prince warned that restrictions against energy companies could backfire if and when demand increases rapidly.

“All of these sanctions and embargoes will converge into one and only thing: a scarcity of energy supplies of all types when they’re most needed,” he warned. “That is my concern.”

Brutal cold seizes northeast US, shattering record lows

On Saturday, a hazardous combination of record-breaking cold temperatures and high winds battered the northeastern United States, triggering life-threatening circumstances and the death of an infant in Massachusetts.

Mount Washington in New Hampshire recorded a wind chill – a measure of how the combined effect of air and wind feels on the skin – of minus 108 degrees Fahrenheit (-78° Celsius) overnight, which appeared to be the lowest ever recorded in the United States. According to the Mount Washington Observatory, the air temperature at the summit hit minus 47 degrees Fahrenheit (-44 degrees Celsius), with winds gusting at 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour).

The Hampden district attorney said in a statement that severe winds blew a tree into a car in Southwick, Massachusetts, smashing it and killing an infant passenger. The driver was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital.

The low temperature in Boston, where officials shuttered the public school system on Friday due to the coming freeze, reached minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit (-23 degrees Celsius), smashing the day’s record established more than a century ago, according to the NWS. The temperature in Providence, Rhode Island, plummeted to minus 9 degrees Fahrenheit (-23 degrees Celsius), significantly below the previous all-time low of minus 2 degrees Fahrenheit (-19 degrees Celsius) established in 1918.

The arctic blast from eastern Canada delivered record lows to Albany, New York, Augusta, Maine, Rochester, New York, and Worcester, Massachusetts, among other cities, according to the NWS.

Frostquakes

The NWS office in Caribou, Maine, reported “frostquakes,” which feel like earthquakes but are produced by soil cracking unexpectedly in the cold, as well as trees splitting apart, most likely owing to sap freezing inside the trunks.

Several communities took emergency measures to assist citizens, such as creating warming centers and performing outreach to ensure homeless persons were kept warm in the bitter cold.

According to Barbara Trevisan, a spokeswoman for Pine Street Inn, the largest provider of homeless services in New England, the number of vans canvassing the city’s streets in Boston increased on Friday and Saturday.

Because of the heat, many ski areas have reduced their operations. Jay Peak, a ski mountain in northern Vermont near the Canadian border, shut down completely on Friday and Saturday, citing safety concerns for employees and skiers.

The cold weather was predicted to pass quickly, with temperatures set to rise dramatically on Sunday. According to the NWS, the high temperature in Boston on Sunday will be around 47 degrees F (8.3 degrees C).

Dangal is surpassed by Pathaan as the highest-grossing Hindi movie

Shah Rukh’s first leading role on a major motion picture in four years is in Pathaan. Why did the US took so long to shoot down the surveillance balloon?

A single F-22 fighter went up to 58,000 feet and fired an Aim-9X Sidewinder missile.

Washington: US President Joe Biden said he intended to shoot down an alleged Chinese “spy” balloon as soon as he found out about it, but the week-long delay may actually work in his favor.

“I told them to shoot it down,” he told reporters on Saturday, referring to his top generals. “They said to me, ‘Let’s wait till the safest place to do it.’

The order came when the balloon was just off the coast of South Carolina and no longer a risk to anyone below. A single F-22 fighter went up to 58,000 feet and fired an Aim-9X Sidewinder missile, the white contrails of which could be seen against the stark blue sky by people on the ground. The balloon popped, and the equipment it was carrying fell to the ground.

Over the course of the week, the balloon had the most impact on the first visit to China by a Secretary of State in five years. Top diplomat Antony Blinken canceled his trip due to “unacceptable and irresponsible” surveillance, according to China’s top foreign policy official.

BIDEN CONGRATULATES US MILITARY

Biden praised the military for successfully bringing the balloon down. He went on to say that the Pentagon had urged that the shot be done over water and that he had approved the ‘balloon”s downing on Wednesday.

The US has already utilized the Chinese spy balloon to strengthen military and intelligence connections with its closest allies, and it has informed partners about the situation. The Pentagon complimented Canadian peers for following the balloon above North American airspace, while South Korea’s foreign minister requested an explanation from China during a session with Blinken on Friday.

Despite the fact that millions of people were aware of the Chinese balloon floating high above the US, Biden did not notify Beijing before the US aircraft brought it down, according to persons familiar with the event.

China reacts

China was outraged by the decision to fire down the balloon, claiming that the US had violated international rules by attacking what it claimed was a meteorological balloon that had blown off course.

While US officials had advised their Chinese counterparts that downing the balloon was an option, the unwillingness to communicate with China before to the missile strike revealed a new level of animosity between the two countries.

Biden’s decision to wait several days before shooting down the balloon drew a barrage of criticism from Republicans who said his administration was weak on China and should have gotten rid of it immediately, or at the very least before it drifted over Montana, which is home to a large portion of the US’s Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The US military and intelligence agencies will now have access to a sophisticated piece of equipment used by their main geopolitical rival. A Pentagon official told reporters on Saturday that the operation to remove the debris with intelligence value is now underway, and that the US believes the balloon had a wide range of intelligence-gathering capabilities.

SHC suspends permission for holding festival in Park

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) suspended till further orders the permission granted by the District South deputy commissioner to a private organisation for holding a festival for a community at the Urban Forest park in Clifton Block 5.

The direction came on a petition filed by a non-government organisation against holding of the musical festival for a ‘marginalised’ community at the park. The petitioner’s counsel, Talha Makhdoom, submitted that the South deputy commissioner had granted the permission for the festival and the South SSP had issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) for holding such an event on an amenity plot, which was reserved for plantation and greenery only and could not be used for any other purpose, including holding such events.

The counsel submitted that the South DC had issued the permission without completing the codal formalities or inviting objections from the public and residents of the area who were preserving and maintaining such a park for the purpose it was reserved for.

He submitted that the petitioners had approached the South deputy commissioner, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) parks director general as well as the local police against holding of such an event, which, according to them, aimed at promoting vulgarity in society and was against the various articles of the Constitution including, 2A, 29, 30, 31 and 35.

The counsel submitted that unless restraining orders were issued, there was apprehension that a law and order situation would be created as the proposed event had been advertised on social media in a way that had seriously hurt the religious sentiments of a large number of residents of the area.

The high court was requested to declare that the permission granted by the South DC as well as the NOC issued by the South SSP was unlawful and restrain the KMC from lending park to private parties which were constructed and maintained by public funds for no purpose other than the communal service.

A division bench of the SHC headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi after a preliminary hearing of the petition issued notices to the South DC, Karachi Development Authority, South SSP and others and called their comments on February 9.

U.S. warns Turkey on exports seen to boost Russia’s war effort

Istanbul: The US has recently cautioned Turkey about the transfer to Russia of chemicals, microchips, and other materials that could be used in Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine, and it has threatened to sanction Turkish companies or banks that violate sanctions.

Brian Nelson, the top sanctions officer at the US Treasury Department, visited the Turkish government and commercial sector leaders on Thursday and Friday to urge greater cooperation in stopping the supply of such commodities.

In a speech to bankers, Nelson said a marked year-long rise in exports to Russia leaves Turkish entities “particularly vulnerable to reputational and sanctions risks”, or lost access to G7 markets.

They should “take extra precaution to avoid transactions related to potential dual-use technology transfers that could be used by the Russian military-industrial complex,” he said in a copy of the speech issued by the Treasury.

According to a senior US source who requested anonymity, Nelson and a group raised concerns about tens of millions of dollars in shipments to Russia during meetings in Ankara and Istanbul.

“There is no surprise…that Russia is actively looking to leverage the historic economic ties it has in Turkey,” the official said. “The question is what is the Turkish response going to be.”

Ankara, a NATO member, opposes the broad sanctions against Russia on principle but believes they will not be avoided in Turkey, pressing the West to produce evidence.

On April 20, 2007, the couple exchanged vows in a small ceremony at the previous Bachchan home, Prateeksha. The actor once discussed how becoming married to Aishwarya improved his life.

Aishwarya once referred to Abhishek as “a well-mannered, chivalrous youngster and a knight in shining armor” when he was younger. He turns 47 on February 5. The actor admitted to talk show presenter Oprah Winfrey on her broadcast that he proposed to Aishwarya Rai while they were touring New York to promote Guru (2007). But after getting married, they only collaborated in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan (2010). Aaradhya Bachchan, their 11-year-old daughter, is also their child.

The actor previously discussed how his wife supported him after they got married in an old interview “I now have a confidence I never had before thanks to her. I believe that most males will concur with this. My sister, who got married a long time ago and is very protective of me, is the baby of the family. I wasn’t actually blamed for anything. However, after getting married—and this simply came naturally—I realized I wanted to be responsible for this person, to care for and protect her.”

Additionally, the actor had stated that he did not view marriage as a concession. Being married to her and having her in his life were “of more value and happiness” to him than anything he could compromise on, he had said.

Aishwarya last appeared in Mani Ratnam’s historical drama PS – 1 in a dual role as queens Nandini and Mandakini Devi. The second installment of the Chola dynasty tale, which is based on the classic Tamil novel Ponniyin Selvan, will be released in theaters on April 28.

For Breathe: Into the Shadows’ second season on Prime Video, Abhishek made a comeback. Along with Yami Gautam and Nimrat Kaur, he also had a role in the comedy Dasvi last year. He plays a coach to Saiyami Kher, who plays a cricket player in R Balki’s Ghoomer.
