CTD Punjab foils major terror plan, arrests 9 terrorists

LAHORE: The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) foiled a major terror plan in Punjab and arrested 9 terrorists of banned organizations.

CTD spokesperson said arrested 9 terrorists including two terrorists belonging to banned organization Fitna al-Khawarij, during operations in different areas of Punjab.

The spokesperson said that among the arrested terrorists are Abdul Karim, Muhammad Usman, Imran Siddiqui, Muhammad Thanvi, Mustjab Hussain Shah, Shaukatullah, Ahmed Khan, Shiraz Mehmood and Saeed ur Rehman.

The spokesperson said that the terrorists associated with banned organizations. These terrorists were arrested in Rahim Yar Khan, Okara, Bahawalpur, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Mianwali. All terrorist were arrested during intelligence based operations.

Explosive material 4895 gms, hand grenades 02, IED bombs 02, detonators 26, safety fuse wire 73 feet, 30 bore pistols 04 and 19 bullets, pamphlets of proscribed organization 17, magazines 07, books 15, pamphlets 121,  stickers 156, receipt books 04, mobile phones 02, cash of Rs.960 were recovered terrorists.

The spokesman further said that the terrorists had planned sabotage law and order situation across the province and wanted to target important installations and other places. However, 9 cases have been registered against the arrested terrorists and they are being further investigated.

Earthquake jolts parts of Punjab, KP

ISLAMABAD: Earthquake tremors were felt in various districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including the federal capital Islamabad.

Earthquake tremors were felt in Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Kamalia, Khanewal, Bhalwal, Chiniot, Hafizabad, Toba Tek Singh, Gujarat, Sargodha and Jhang.

Similarly, earthquake tremors were also felt in Sahiwal, Chichawatani, Burewala, Phulnagar, Hujra Shah Muqeem, Shahkot, Sangla Hill, Talagang and Chakwal.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, earthquake tremors were also felt in Peshawar, North Waziristan, Dera Ismail  Khan, Lakki Marwat, Swat, Shangla, Lower Dir, Malakand, Tank and Chitral.

Due to the severity of the earthquake, people came out of their homes and offices in various cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab and started reciting the Kalima e Tayyaba.

According to the Seismological Centre, the tremors of the earthquake were felt at 12:28 PM with a magnitude of 5.7 and a depth of 10 km. The epicenter was near Dera Ghazi Khan.

On the other hand, the tremors of the earthquake were felt in the Indian capital, New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Indian Punjab and Occupied Kashmir.

According to Rescue 1122 Spokesman Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Bilal Faizi, reports of earthquake received from different parts of the province.

However, the Control Room of Rescue 1122 has not received report of any damage or loss due to the tremor, Faizi added.

LHC, Sub-ordinate courts to remain closed on Sep 17

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) and subordinate courts in Punjab will remain closed on September 17 (Tuesday) in connection with Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH).

According to an LHC notification issued here on Monday, LHC Chief Justice Miss Aalia Neelum declared September 17 as a holiday for the LHC and subordinate judiciary.

The LHC principal seat, its allied benches including Bahawalpur, Multan, and Rawalpindi, and civil and sessions courts in Punjab will observe the holiday on September 17, it added.

Punjab to increase minimum employment age to 16 years

LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to increase the minimum age of employment to 16 years to discourage child labour in the province.

In the meeting presided over by Punjab Labour Minister Faisal Ayub Khokhar, it has been decided to establish a special task force for the implementation of the minimum wage of Rs 37,000 .

The Labour Minister said that the payment of salary to the workers will be ensured through bank accounts and for immediate resolution of their problems, the Labour Department has also set up a grievance cell where the identity of the complainants will be kept confidential.

Faisal Ayub Khokhar said that the workers will encourage the right to form unions and association for which the employment agencies are being brought under the ambit of labour laws to protect the workers.

The Labour Minister further said that strict action has been taken against child labour across Punjab while raising the age of employment to 16 years to discourage child labour.

It should be noted that according to Section 3 of Article 11 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the minimum age for employment in the country should be 14 years.

Govt appoints three new officers in Adiala Jail

RAWALPINDI: Punjab Home Department has appointed three new officers including Additional Superintendent in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

According to prison sources, Ali Amir Shah has been appointed Additional Superintendent Jail Rawalpindi, while Amir Fayaz Bhatti has been appointed Deputy Superintendent Education.

Jail sources say that Jamaat Ali has been appointed Deputy Superintendent Judicial Adiala Jail.

Jail sources say that the three officers have been posted in Adiala Jail on the instructions of Punjab Home Department.

It should be noted that the former Deputy Superintendent of Adiala Jail, Muhammad Akram, was detained on August 14 on the charge of alleged facilitation and abuse of powers by PTI founder chairman, and Tahir Siddique Shah was appointed as Deputy Superintendent Adiala Jail .

According to the sources, questioning of two more officers of Adiala Jail has been started on the suspicion of PTI founder’s alleged facilitation in the jail.

Punjab to conduct first schools census to introduce skill based programme

ISLAMABAD:  Punjab’s Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat said that all-out measures would be taken to standardise the education system in public schools of Punjab where for better policies, the first school mapping programme to collect data about all school kids will be conducted soon transparently.

He stressed on conducting school census at the national level, adding that the Punjab government is taking the lead among all other provinces and recently with the direction of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif school mapping was being conducted to count kids.

Through NADRA data will be checked about the enrollment data of students at every district level, he said, adding that long-term policy-making for government schools and enhancing the quality of education will be the top priority of the Punjab government.

He also praised that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also announced the formation of a 19-member Education Task Force to address the pressing issues related to the national education emergency which is another historic step.

He said that collective efforts of all provinces related to out-of-school children’s need of hour, adding, that Punjab government authorities are collaborating with other provinces in this regard.

Replying to a question, he mentioned that the government is also conducting an inter-provincial education conference next month to devise a national strategy to bring improvement in the education system across the country.

He said education ministers of all the provinces and other stakeholders would be invited to the conference and to find out consensus-based solutions to address the education system.

To another question, he stressed the need to devise a strategy for education and skill-based training programmes for public schools, adding that the prime minister had a vision of creating employment opportunities for the youth.

ECP issues delimitation schedule of UCs in Punjab for LG polls

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has released a delimitation schedule of union councils (UCs) in Punjab for holding local government elections.

However, the final publication of the constituencies will be done on September 1.

The arrangements regarding acquisition of maps, notification of demarcation and training of constituency committees will be completed by June 30.

The initial list of constituencies will be prepared from July 1 to 22, while the initial publication of the constituencies will be on July 23.

According to the schedule issued by the Election Commission, the objections to the constituencies will be submitted from July 24 to August 7 and the constituencies authorities will deal with the objections by August 22.

The constituency authorities will inform the constituency committees of their decisions by August 29 and the final publication of the constituencies for local body elections in Punjab will be done on September 1.

18 die in road accidents across Punjab

MULTAN:As many as 18 people died in different road accidents across the province on the first day of Eid ul Azha.

According to Rescue 1122, the rescue team responded to 1903 accidents in Punjab on the first day of Eid and provided first aid treatment to 2089 people.

Most of the accidents were reported in Lahore, where 418 people sustained injuries in 382 different accidents. However, 125 accidents in Faisalabad, 120 in Multan, and 108 in Gujrawala were reported.

On the first day of Eid, 173 incidents of fire occurred in scattered places in the province.

In Lahore, there were 33 incidents of fire. However, fire incidents were also reported in Ralwalpindi, Attock, and Faisalabad.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmed urged citizens to contact the department in case of any emergency.

Departments to remain alert during heatwave: PDMA

Met office issues heatwave alert for Ramadan

ISLAMABAD: Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Technical Director Hamidullah Malik said that heatwave may be severe in districts of the country where all concerned departments have been directed to remain alert to meet any untoward situation and asked citizens to contact PDMA Helpline 1129 in case of any emergency.

He stated that media platforms are used to inform the public about the risks associated with heatwaves.

In this regard, Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) advised all citizens to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from the expected heatwave, he mentioned.

He also suggested all private and government organizations for change in duty timings to save people from severe heatwave cases, adding, departments should also dispatch these all emergency numbers in their offices.

He advised to drink adequate water in the heat. Individuals with medical conditions were advised to keep their medication in stock.

If people need assistance in an emergency, they can contact the PDMA’ s Helpline number 1129 or Rescue number 1122.

Awareness campaigns are underway to educate the public about preventive measures and provide guidance on staying safe during extreme heat conditions, he mentioned.

President Zardari approves appointment of Governors

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has accorded his approval to the appointment of Governors for Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.

After approval, Sardar Slaeem Haider Khan has been appointed as Governor Punjab, Faisal Karim Kundi as Governor KP and Jaffar Khan Mandokhel as Governor Balochistan.

LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department has recommended to suspend mobile phone and internet service in the by-elections to be held tomorrow.

The Punjab Home Department has written a letter to the Federal Ministry of Interior requesting that mobile phone and internet services be suspended in 13 districts and tehsils of Punjab during the April 21 by-elections.

In the letter, it has been said that mobile phone and internet services should be suspended in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Talagang, Kalar Kahar, Gujarat, Ali Pur Chatha , Bhakkar, Zafarwal, Kot Chutta, Sadiqabad, Dera Ghazi Khan and Chakwal for peace and order.

A copy of the letter has also been sent to Chief Secretary Punjab, IG Punjab, Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) , CCPO Lahore, Commissioners concerned and other officers.

LAHORE: At least 24 people were killed in lightning related incidents in Punjab and Balochistan as heavy rains hit the provinces.

South Punjab and Balochistan experienced thunder and lightning rains during which 24 people died due to lightning strikes.

During the heavy rains, 16 deaths have occurred due to lightning in South Punjab and 8 in different areas of Balochistan.

In Punjab out 16 deaths, 7 were reported Rahim Yar Khan and three each in Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Lodhran due to lightning.

According to the rescue, 7 people including two children and a husband and wife were killed due to lightning strikes at three places in the surrounding areas of Rahim Yar Khan. Husband and wife were harvesting wheat and children were playing when they were struck by lightning.

On the other hand, 3 people, including a woman and an 8-year-old child, were killed due to lightning in Bahawalpur.3 people including a woman died due to lightning in Lodhran.

3 members of the same family were killed and 2 injured due to lightning strike near Faqirwali area of ​​Bahawalnagar.

According to rescue officials, the lightning struck the motorcycle riding family. Among the deceased are father and two sons, mother and son were injured.

Meanwhile, 8 deaths have occurred in different areas of Balochistan during the last 24 hours while 6 people have been injured.

Chaman and Surab had two deaths due to lightning, while Qila Abdullah, Muslim Bagh, Pishin and Dera Bugti had one death each due to lightning.

Meanwhile, according to the spokesperson of the Balochistan government, instructions have been issued to all commissioners and deputy commissioners in view of the unusual rains and weather conditions in the province.
