IT Ministry finalize Mobile Phone Installment Plan to PTA For Final Review

Concerns Mount as Govt Proposes New Mobile Phone Tax

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications is close to making it possible for people to buy smartphones through installment plans.

The plan has reached its final stage and is now with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for review. If someone fails to pay their installments, the PTA will block their phone, a task previously handled only by mobile companies.

The blocking will be done using the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) of the PTA. The goal is to help low-income individuals buy phones through interest-free installments, promoting technology access.

The next step is to get approval from the federal cabinet, and once that happens, the Ministry will issue a directive, making progress in ensuring fair technology access and accountability through the DIRBS system.
