QUETTA: At least three people were killed and 21 others were injured in powerful blast at Double Road Quetta city of Balochistan.

According to police, the blast damaged a police vehicle and motorcycles. The bodies of the dead in a Double Road blast have been shifted to Civil Hospital, Quetta.

The trauma center administration said 17 people were injured in the blast, including two children.

Police Surgeon Dr Ayesha Faiz confirmed the death of 3 people and injured 21, of which three were in critical condition.

Residents of the area say that the sound of the blast was heard in remote areas, while law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation.

NIH issues health advisory for the prevention of dengue fever

ISLAMABAD: The National Institute of Health (NIH) has issued an health advisory for the prevention and control of dengue in view of the recent rains in the country.

According to the NIH advisory, dengue cases are expected to increase in Punjab, Balochistan and the northern areas, the dengue virus spreads rapidly in hot and humid weather, which can make the situation even worse after the rains.

The company has directed the authorities and the public to take immediate steps to take precautionary measures and to prevent mosquitoes.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 28,427 dengue cases were reported in Pakistan in 2024, which is a significant increase over last year.

The NIH has warned that more cases may be revealed if precautions are not taken.

Early symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severe headaches, joints and muscle aches, signs on the skin and pain behind the eyes.

NIH has advised the public to use only paracetamol in case of fever, while refusing to use the use of aspirin and NSAIDs as these medicines can increase the risk of bleeding.

To prevent dengue, NIH has advised the public to use mosquitoes, use lotions and sprays, wear arms covering clothes and do not allow water to stand in homes and streets.

QUETTA: At least seven passengers hailing from Punjab were killed by the unidentified armed men in Barkhan area of Balochistan province.

The attack took place in the Rarkan area, where unidentified armed men stopped a passenger bus and opened fire into the air.

Assistant Commissioner Barkhan Khadim Hussain confirmed that seven passengers were gunned down after identification.

According to the Assistant Commissioner, the bus was going from Quetta to Faisalabad. The Levies and FC have surrounded the area. The bodies are being shifted to the hospital.

The bus passenger Zeeshan told the media that 10, 12 gunmen stopped the bus and then shot and killed 7 passengers.

Zeeshan said that his brother Adnan was also taken off the bus and was killed. The brother was taken off the bus after seeing the identity card.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Balochistan Sarfaraz Bugti has strongly condemned the brutal killing of seven passengers in Barkhan, saying that terrorists are targeting innocent people.

He said that the cowardly act of the miscreants is unbearable and it will be strongly answered.

According to the Balochistan government, FC and Levies have arrived at the scene after the Barkhan incident and security forces are pursuing terrorists.

ECP announces Senate by-election schedule for Balochistan seat

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that the by-election for the vacant Senate seat from Balochistan will be held on March 8, 2025.

The ECP had appointed Provincial Election Commissioner of Balochistan, Farid Afridi, as the Returning Officer for the election.

Unveiling the schedule for the by-election to fill the vacant General Senate seat, vacated by Senator Muhammad Qasim’s resignation.

As per the released schedule, the ECP will issue a public notice today, February 17, while the collection of nomination papers is set for February 18 and 19.

The list of candidates is set to be published on February 20, and the scrutiny of nomination papers will be finalized by February 22.

Appeals concerning the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers will be heard on February 25 and resolved by February 27.

A revised list of candidates will be released on February 28, followed by a window for candidates to withdraw their nomination papers until March 1. Polling is set to take place on March 8.

Balochistan Assembly passes agricutlural income tax law

QUETTA: The Balochistan Assembly also passed Tax on Land and Agricultural Income Amendment Bill after Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh.

In Balochistan, the path to tax implementation on agricultural income was paved. Balochistan Assembly passed the law of Balochistan Tax on Land and Agricultural Income Amendment Bill.

According to the draft law, the income tax on agricultural income will increase by 45 percent.

According to the law documents of the Balochistan Tax  on Land and Agricultural Income, presented in the Balochistan Assembly, no tax will be imposed on agricultural income of 600,000 annually, but 15  percent tax will be imposed on income from 600,000 to 1.2 million.

According to the draft law documents, the income of Rs 1.2 million to Rs 1.6 million will be imposed on 90,000 fixed tax and a 20 percent tax on the total income of Rs 1.2 million .

Similarly, 170,000 fixed taxes have been proposed on 1.6 million to 3.2 million income while 30 percent agricultural tax has been proposed on income above 1.6 million.

The draft will have to pay Rs 650,000 tax on income from Rs 3.2 million to 5.6 million while 40 percent agricultural tax will have to be paid on income above 3.2 million.

According to the draft, the income of Rs 5.6 million will be taxed at Rs 1.6 million and 45 percent agricultural tax will have to be paid on additional income if there is more than 5.6 million revenue.

Finance Minister Mohammad Aurangzeb welcomed the approval of a tax bill on agricultural income from all four provincial assemblies and said, “We will now be in a good position in the International Monetary Fund’s half -year review.”

He said that the tax burden cannot be restricted to salaries and manufacturing sectors only.

According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), individual was identified as 48-year old Muhammad Khan Ahmedkhel, Son of Haji Qasim Dawran Khan, resident of Village Bilorai, District Wazekhwa, Paktika Province, Afghanistan. His dead body was handed over to IAG officials on January 20 after necessary procedural formalities.

Such incidents are irrefutable evidence of involvement of Afghan Nationals in terrorist activities in Pakistan.

Senator Farooq H. Naek presided over a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice.

The report of the sub-committee formed regarding the constitutional amendment bill to increase seats in Balochistan was presented in the meeting.

Senator Zameer Hussain said that we have suggested that the seats in Balochistan should be increased from 65 to 80, while Senator Kamran Murtaza said that if there is an increase, then the seats in the National Assembly should be increased.
