  • She used the stolen funds to purchase luxury items.

A man in Nevada has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping his wife’s employer after she was accused of embezzling $20 million from his company over seven years, according to the New York Post (NYP).

42-year-old William Costa faces charges of kidnapping, conspiracy, battery, coercion, and extortion in connection to the alleged abduction of Larry Gilmore, the owner of Gilmore Construction LLC. Costa’s wife, 46-year-old Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Marabella, worked as a financial controller at the company and allegedly used the stolen funds to purchase luxury items, including a purple Lamborghini.

According to Las Vegas Review-Journal, Gilmore was driving to work when he saw Marabella’s Lamborghini nearby. Moments later, his Porsche was rear-ended by a Chevrolet Suburban.

Police reports state that a man exited the Suburban and showed Gilmore pictures of his children before another man put him in a chokehold, punched him, and restrained him with zip ties. He was then taken into the desert, where his captors placed a bag over his head and held a gun to him.

He was ordered to tell authorities that he had given the money to Marabella as a “gift or investment for a business”, or his family would be killed.

Gilmore pleaded with Costa to speak to his father to “fix the situation.” After being released, he reported the crime to the police.

RASTA Conference: A convergence of policy, research, and economic transformation

RASTA

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) inaugurated the 5th RASTA Conference, reaffirming its commitment to evidence-based policymaking, economic innovation, and research-driven reforms. As Pakistan’s largest economic and public policy research grant initiative, RASTA has grown into a dynamic platform for intellectual discourse, collaboration, and actionable policy solutions.

The conference brought together renowned academics, policymakers, and development experts, fostering an open exchange of ideas on Pakistan’s economic future.

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Prof Ahsan Iqbal, the chief guest, delivered a compelling keynote address, likening Pakistan’s economic journey to an athlete making up for lost ground. With 22 critical years ahead, he warned that the country must sprint forward, eliminating inefficiencies and embracing structured, data-driven policymaking.

He pointed to China, South Korea, and Singapore as examples of nations that have successfully leveraged scientific planning, phased implementation, and policy consistency to achieve economic success, while Pakistan continues to complicate simple problems.

Research, he stressed, must move beyond academic papers and integrate into industry, governance, and economic policies. Despite billions invested in STEM education, he cautioned that without proper application, these investments risk becoming wasted opportunities.

Highlighting governance instability and policy discontinuity as major barriers to economic progress, he recalled that between 2013 and 2018, Pakistan eliminated power shortages, secured $25 billion through CPEC, and improved security.

As a way forward, he called for rapid export expansion, resource optimization, and structured economic planning. Setting an ambitious target, he proposed scaling Pakistan’s exports from $30 billion to $100 billion, leveraging industrial, agricultural, and service sector growth.

Earlier, in his opening remarks, Dr Muhammad Nadeem Javaid, Vice Chancellor of PIDE, emphasized that PIDE is not just a think tank—it is a bridge between research and action.

He outlined a vision for strengthening Pakistan’s policymaking landscape through new initiatives designed to ensure that research translates into real impact.

He announced the establishment of a Policy Lab that will provide real-time, data-driven solutions for governance and economic challenges.

To further enhance the quality of research and policy recommendations, PIDE is implementing a rigorous research funding mechanism that prioritizes high-impact, evidence-based studies.

Dr Faheem Jehangir, Director Policy at PIDE and Project Director RASTA, provided insights into RASTA’s remarkable expansion over the past four years.

The initiative has cultivated an extensive knowledge network, collaborating with 70 local universities, 12 international institutions, and over 4,300 researchers, practitioners, and academicians.

The Competitive Grant Program (CGP) has received 1,664 applications across seven rounds, but to maintain quality and impact, only 90 research projects (7.8% selection rate) were funded. Of these, 65 have been successfully completed, while the remaining 25 are being presented at this conference.

The conference also featured several technical sessions on technology-driven economic growth, fiscal management, and governance efficiency.

Veteran actor Behroz Sabzwari has ignited a heated debate online after attributing rising divorce rates to modern parenting and women’s attitudes in marriage.

Appearing on a morning show with his wife, Safina Behroz, the couple spoke about their long-lasting relationship. Praising his wife, Behroz said, “Safina is the secret of my good fortune. I achieved a lot of success after marrying her.”

Safina reciprocated the sentiment, stating, “After so many years of marriage, love, care, and respect have only grown. My husband takes more care of me.”

Emphasizing marital bonds, Behroz remarked, “There is no alternative to the love of parents, and the love of children cannot be denied either. However, there is no parallel of the closeness between husband and wife.”

His comments have faced criticism on social media, with many calling them misogynistic and outdated.

Pakistan urges extension of Gaza ceasefire to all occupied Palestinian lands

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called on the UN Security Council to take steps to end Israel’s aggression in the occupied West Bank, emphasizing that the 15-member body ensure that the ceasefire in Gaza extends beyond the war-shattered enclave to all occupied Palestinian territories.

“Peace cannot take root as long as Israel’s actions in the occupied West Bank continue with impunity,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, the alternative permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, said after a briefing to the Council members by the top UN official for the Middle East Peace Process, Sigrid Kaag, on the situation in the restive region.

Over 50,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced, with military raids, settler violence, and illegal land annexations intensifying daily, he said.

“These are not isolated incidents but part of a deliberate strategy to erase Palestinian identity from their own land– It is ethnic cleansing in real time,” the Pakistani envoy added.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s resolute support to the Palestinian people in their struggle for self-determination, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that a sovereign, independent and contiguous State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, was not just a political necessity — it is a moral imperative.

“If we truly believe in the UN Charter principles, if we stand for justice, for the rule of law, for the fundamental right of all peoples to live in dignity – then we must act,” he said.

Earlier, Ms. Kaaq, the UN official in the region, urged Council members to ensure Gaza remains an integral part of a future Palestinian State, and that the enclave and the West Bank including East Jerusalem are unified politically, economically and administratively.

At the same time, she said there should be no long-term Israeli military presence in Gaza – although Israel’s security concerns must be addressed.

John Abraham criticizes Bollywood actors for inflated fees and entourage costs

John Abraham
  • John Abraham has criticized his fellow actors for their exorbitant fees.
  • He addressed the ongoing issue of actors charging massive amounts.
  • John urged actors to be more responsible.

Bollywood actor John Abraham has strongly criticized his fellow actors for their exorbitant fees and rising entourage costs, calling it detrimental to Hindi cinema. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, John addressed the ongoing issue of actors charging massive amounts.

When asked about “heroes asking for INR 100 crore per day and their stylists demanding  INR 2 lakh per day,” John termed it “mental.” He further explained, “It’s already hurting Hindi cinema. At this point in time, we shouldn’t be paying people to act in films because we don’t justify those huge budgets, the huge fees that we get paid. We can’t load a film with entourage costs as well. It’s ridiculous.”

John questioned whether actors themselves or their agents were behind this trend, adding, “I understand you are put in a bubble, but you can’t be so daft. You need to get out and see the real world. If people are blowing sunshine from your backside, you need to wake up and smell the coffee.”

He urged actors to be more responsible, saying, “Actors should admit that we are down the deep black hole… How much more will you suck the system dry?”

John will next be seen in The Diplomat, an action thriller set for release on March 15.
