President, PM call for mass awareness about breast cancer

President

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have emphasised the countrywide public awareness and collective efforts at individual and national levels to reduce the mortality rate due to breast cancer in Pakistan.

The president, in his message to the nation on the International Day Against Breast Cancer annually observed on October 19, said that breast cancer was not only the most frequently diagnosed cancer but was also the leading cause of death among women in low and middle-income countries.

He said the incidence of breast cancer was more common in South Asian countries, majorly due to a lack of breast cancer awareness in women.

“In our country, one in every nine women is at risk of breast cancer and the late diagnosis of the disease considerably contributes to the high mortality rate. Moreover, economic obstacles deter many from receiving the required treatment,” the president added.

He said the International Day Against Breast Cancer was observed to raise awareness about the disease and to promote timely diagnosis and treatment.

He said that this year’s theme “No One Should Face Breast Cancer Alone” for Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminded us of the importance of support, solidarity, and care for every person dealing with this disease.

He stressed the need to raise awareness about the disease by addressing misconceptions and prioritizing healthy lifestyle adjustments.

He said that Pakistan needed the broader level efforts to educate women about breast cancer, regular self-examination and mammographic screening.

He urged the policymakers and health officials to plan and prioritize disease control activities, including improved treatment and individual patient care.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of raising awareness and promoting early detection of breast cancer, particularly among women.

Highlighting the global prevalence of breast cancer as the most common form of cancer affecting women, he noted that a significant number of deaths occur in low and middle-income countries, including Pakistan.

Samina Alvi mentioned that the world overall had a 98 percent recovery rate from breast cancer, however, pointed out that in Pakistan, insufficient mammographic facilities led to a high mortality rate due to the detection of malignancy at a late stage.

She said women of all ages including teenage girls of 12-14 years were also being diagnosed with breast cancer. She urged the women and girls to learn the five-minute routine of self-examination and spread the word among at least 20 other women folks in their circle.

For the Behbud Mother and Child Hospital, Samina Alvi announced a donation of Rs 500,000 on behalf of her family.

Samina ALvi also emphasized the need to focus on the inclusiveness of persons with disabilities, and mental health and ensuring a harassment-free environment for women.

She called for accommodating the differently-abled persons with facilities of education and employment and mainstreaming them in society.

Lt Gen (retd) Nigar Johar, the country’s first three-star woman general in the Pakistan Army who belonged to the Army Medical Corps, said one in eight women died of breast cancer in the world, which was a scary figure.

Arif Alvi calls for prevention, early diagnosis of diseases

Arif Alvi calls for prevention, early diagnosis of diseases
  • Speaking virtually at awareness programme.
  • Pakistan should give priority to health and education.
  • He said awareness was vital to prepare people against diseases.

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi called for prevention and early diagnosis of diseases like breast cancer and water borne ailments to give people a chance to live longer healthy lives.

Speaking virtually at an awareness programme arranged by Siemens Healthineers, he underlined the need for improvements in the health and education sectors of Pakistan.

Despite the limited resources a developing country like Pakistan should give priority to health and education of the people, he stressed.

He said preventive measures and widespread awareness was vital to prepare people against the onslaught of life threatening diseases.

He said Pakistan had an experience of effectively and successfully tackling Covid 19 as compared to the neighboring country where the death rate was higher.

Spreading of awareness among people was critical to keep Covid under control, he said adding people followed the advice of the government to wear masks, keep distance and take preventive measures helping the country eventually overcome the challenge.

The President urged people to ensure cleanliness to stop the spread of communicable diseases.

Religious scholars could play an important role by teaching the significance of hygiene during their sermons in mosques, he continued.

He appreciated the efforts of Begum Samina Alvi in raising awareness about the threats posted by breast cancer to the health of women.

While citing reasons for late diagnosis of breast cancer among women in Pakistan, he said women were hesitant to share information about any unusual signs which was the cause of delay in screening for breast cancer.

He said those who go for early screening their chance of survival from breast cancer was 99 percent and women should undergo screening when they feel a lump in their chests.

He pointed to the brain drain in Pakistan saying a large percentage of women who get higher education either prefer to stay at home or leave for better opportunities abroad which resulted in lack of availability of professionals in different fields.

He said it was alarming that 10 percent population in Pakistan was suffering from hepatitis, adding due to contribution of Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation, Pakistan had almost eliminated polio however, few cases were reported along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

He mentioned that rapid progress in artificial intelligence and other technology tools was making early diagnosis possible for a number of diseases.

He also underscored the need for improved infrastructure for treatment of mental ailments, adding Pakistan had a low number of psychiatrists and psychologists and there should be more focus on providing treatment to people through online services.

British scientists developed ‘sugar bomb’ to kill cancer cell

British scientists developed 'sugar bomb' to kill cancer cell

British scientists have developed a ‘sugar bomb’ to kill cancer cells safely. Which will destroy the cancer cells in a few seconds without harming the healthy cells.

Experts at the ‘British University of Edinburgh’ said that the drug will not harm nearby healthy cells and tissues. Under this procedure, patients will not even need to undergo harmful chemotherapy.

According to the report, food is needed for the cancerous tumor to spread rapidly. Sweet bombs will be thrown at the tumor in the form of light, which will explosively destroy the cancer cells. This procedure is also called SCNBD.

Experts said that during the test, the sugar cells in the tumor were destroyed in a few seconds, this method will also be possible to treat breast, prostate, and lung cancer.

However, this method will be used to treat common brain cancers.

Researcher ‘Sam Benson’ said that the sugar bomb draws energy from the drug light and the cells use the energy to make oxygen a weapon.

According to the Brain Tumor Charity, this method will be able to target cancer cells without disturbing healthy cells.

Scientists hope that this new method will increase the rate of cancer recovery and they will not have to go through a difficult and painful procedure like chemotherapy.
