ECP finalizes arrangements to hold polls in Punjab, KP

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has finalized preparations to hold provincial assemblies’ elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the details, the Election Commission has completed the preparations for the general elections of the Provincial Assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while the proposed schedule has been prepared for the two provinces.

Sources said the proposal has been prepared to set the date of polling on April 9 in Punjab and April 16 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, however, the schedule for Punjab is likely to be released next week.

The election schedule for Punjab will likely be released next week.

The preparations for operational matters, deployment of electoral staff, and procurement of election material have also been finalized.

Polling day for the election will be announced after final approval from the Election Commission of Pakistan.

On the other hand, in view of the decision of the Lahore High Court regarding the elections in Punjab, the Chief Election Commissioner has called a high-level meeting of the Election Commission on February 13.

The youngster can be heard pleading for help in the video. Other voices can be heard in the background, which are thought to be those of his neighbors who were also trapped in their collapsed homes.

With a voice filled with fear and desperation, the boy says: “I’m not sure if I’m going to stay alive or die.” He is recording the video with the hope that it will be shared if he were to make it, he says.

As the youngster continues to narrate the terrifying sensation of being trapped beneath the rubble, he rotates the camera to show the earthquake’s devastation. His house’s walls had collapsed, leaving just a heap of rubble in their place.

On Friday, emergency crews in Turkey conducted a series of daring rescues, plucking numerous individuals from the wreckage four days after a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed nearly 24,000 people in Turkey and Syria.

Six relatives gathered in a small pocket under the wreckage, a teenager who drank his own urine to quench his thirst, and a 4-year-old youngster offered a jelly bean to calm him down as he was shimmied out were among the survivors.

Ready to Evacuate

Flood-prone areas have been advised to prepare for evacuation.

“There’s a degree of nervousness and anxiety around this coming event,” the Thames-Coromandel district’s mayor, Len Salt, told the Stuff news website.

“Coromandel people are pretty resilient, but the fact we’ve been in this mode dealing with storm events from the beginning of January…people are tired.”

Meanwhile, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology has reported that circumstances on Norfolk Island’s isolated territory have began to deteriorate as a result of Cyclone Gabrielle.

The island, which is located north of New Zealand, has also been declared unsafe. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and seek cover in the strongest portion of their homes.

Only three cyclones have passed within 50 kilometers (31 miles) of the island in the last 30-40 years.

The FBI discovers another classified paper at ex-VP Pence’s residence

The FBI found an additional classified document at the property of former vice president Mike Pence two weeks after the Republican acknowledged having a “small number” of government files at his home.

Pence’s spokesman Devin O´Malley said in a statement to US media that agents had turned up the material in a “thorough and unrestricted” five-hour search of the Carmel, Indiana house, conducted with Pence’s consent.

They removed “one document with classified markings and six additional without such markings that were not discovered in the initial review by the vice president’s counsel,” he added.

The search came after Pence, who is considering a presidential bid in 2024, revealed last month that an aide had discovered secret materials, which he most certainly took with him when he left the White House in January 2021.

This came after searches of President Joe Biden‘s and former President Donald Trump’s houses turned up secret documents.

Former top US officials are required to turn up to the National Archives any official records from their time in the White House.

Last August, FBI agents raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and discovered considerable numbers of secret materials, despite Trump’s claim that there were none.

That came after months of National Archives requests for all of the materials Donald Trump brought with him.

An independent Justice Department prosecutor is investigating the former president for illegally stealing and retaining sensitive documents, as well as an obstruction for obstructing the inquiry.

After Trump’s case became public, confidential documents were discovered at a Washington office that Biden used before becoming president.

This resulted in FBI searches of Biden’s house in Wilmington, Delaware, where more documents were discovered, and his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where none were discovered.

The move against the Chinese enterprises linked to Beijing’s surveillance-balloon program was taken in retribution for a suspected spy balloon flying above the United States.

As part of its retribution for an alleged Chinese surveillance balloon that crossed US airspace, the US banned six Chinese firms it said were tied to Beijing’s aerospace activities.

Following the Biden administration’s vow to consider additional actions to counter Chinese espionage activities, Friday’s economic limitations will make it more difficult for the five corporations and one research organization to purchase American technology exports.

The move is likely to exacerbate the diplomatic spat between the United States and China triggered by the balloon, which was shot down last weekend off the coast of North Carolina.

The US claimed the balloon was geared to detect and gather intelligence signals, but Beijing claims it was simply a weather balloon that had gotten off track.

The incident prompted Secretary of State Antony Blinken to abruptly cancel a high-stakes trip to Beijing aimed at easing tensions.

Military modernization efforts

The US Bureau of Industry and Security said the six entities were being targeted for “their support to China‘s military modernization efforts, specifically the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) aerospace programs including airships and balloons.”

“The PLA is utilizing High Altitude Balloons (HAB) for intelligence and reconnaissance activities,” it said.

Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves said on Twitter his department “will not hesitate to continue to use” such restrictions and other regulatory and enforcement tools “to protect US national security and sovereignty.”

Beijing Nanjiang Aerospace Technology Co., China Electronics Technology Group Corporation 48th Research Institute, Dongguan Lingkong Remote Sensing Technology Co., Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group Co., Guangzhou Tian-Hai-Xiang Aviation Technology Co., and Shanxi Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group Co. are the six companies involved.

The research institute did not react immediately to a request for comment. The other five entities were unable to be reached.

On President Joe Biden’s instructions, a US military fighter jet shot down an unexplained object flying off the far northern coast of Alaska on Friday.

The item was shot down because it allegedly posed a threat to the safety of civilian planes, rather than because it was engaged in surveillance.

But the twin incidents in such close succession reflect heightened concerns over China’s surveillance program and public pressure on Biden to take a tough stand against it.

Aima Baig the first female singer in history to lend her voice to National Anthem at PSL 8 Opening Ceremony

It’s that time of the year where the nation bands together to welcome Pakistan Super League. The 8th iteration of the cricketing league, or HBL PSL 8, as it is officially called, is set to commence on Monday, February 13. Set for the date is a highly-anticipated opener between 2021 champions Lahore Qalandars and runner-ups Multan Sultan at the picturesque Multan Cricket Stadium.

Before the toss, however, fans in attendance and at home watching will be treated to a live performance of the official PSL 8 anthem from a star-studded line-up comprising the likes of Shae Gill, Faris Shafi, Asim Azhar, and Abdullah Siddiqui. Topping off the opening ceremony will be musical sensation Aima Baig with her soulful rendition of the National Anthem.

The “Na Cher Malangaan Nu” hitmaker has lent her voice to official PSL anthems in the past. Although Aima not being a part of the official PSL anthem this year may come off as a disappointment to her fans, the singer is honored and humbled to be lending her voice to the glorious National Anthem, a task not many are willing to commit to given the extreme pressure that comes with it.

“Signing our beloved National Anthem on a massive platform such as PSL is both humbling and challenging; the latter in the sense that you are surrounded by thousands of fans in the stadium and watched by millions of users on screen – and everybody is super attentive because it’s the National Anthem. That is a whole different pressure, and I can’t imagine messing it up,” said Aima.

RAWALPINDI: Funeral prayers of Major Muhammad Jawad and Captain Sagheer Abbas have been offered at Rawalpindi and Kot Addu respectively.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), both officers embraced martyrdom due to an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion during sanitisation operation in Kohlu, Balochistan.

Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen Muhammad Saeed and a large number of serving and retired officers, soldiers, relatives and people from different segments of society attended the funeral.

The martyred officers were laid to rest with full military honours, the military’s press wing.
