EU leaders seek to break oil ban deadlock as Russia advances in Donbas

Russia

European Union leaders met in Brussels on Monday to try to overcome Hungarian opposition to an embargo on Russian oil, As Moscow’s forces made gains in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region,

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was scheduled to address leaders at the emergency summit, where he is expected to press the block “to kill Russian exports” in an effort to increase international pressure on Moscow.

Despite urgent requests from Kyiv for such weapons and extensive US military aid for Ukraine since the war began, US President Joe Biden said in Washington that he would not send rocket systems to Ukraine that could strike Russian territory.

EU diplomats have drafted a watered-down agreement that would see pipeline oil exempted from the ban, in the hopes of unblocking talks on the bloc’s sixth round of Russian sanctions.

Ahead of the meeting, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told reporters the proposal was a “good solution” but warned there was “no agreement at all” as things stood.

On the ground, Russian forces pressed their offensive in Donbas.

The situation in Severodonetsk, just across the Donets river from its sister city of Lysychansk, was “very difficult”, the local Lugansk regional governor Sergiy Gaiday said in a statement on social media.

“The Russians are advancing into the middle of Severodonetsk”, while the fighting continued, Gaiday said.

“We are not going to send to Ukraine rocket systems that can strike into Russia,” Biden told reporters in Washington.

Ukraine has received extensive US military aid since legislators approved another $40 billion (37.1 billion euros) assistance package earlier in May.

France’s new foreign minister Catherine Colonna said on a visit to Kyiv that Paris was ready to boost military aid to Ukraine to help it counter Russia’s invasion.

France will “continue to reinforce arms deliveries,” Colonna said at a news conference with her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba.

The arms would arrive “in the coming weeks”, she said.

The highest-ranking French official to visit the capital since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, Colonna also visited the town of Bucha, where Russian troops have been accused of committing war crimes against the civilian population.

“This should never have happened. It must never happen again,” Colonna told reporters after visiting an Orthodox church in the town.

The foreign minister’s visit came as a French journalist was killed while working in Ukraine.

Frederic Leclerc-Imhoff was “on board a humanitarian bus” when “he was mortally wounded,” French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter on Monday.

– Oil sanctions –

Speaking alongside Colonna, Kuleba said he hoped “divisions will be overcome” at the EU leader’s meeting.

The sixth wave of EU measures against Moscow was put on the table weeks ago but has been rejected by Orban and resisted by neighboring countries also reliant on pipelined Russian oil.

Macron cautiously told reporters that a long-sought-after deal was “getting closer”, but others doubted that the Hungarian leader was ready to sign on at this stage.

“I don’t think we’ll reach an agreement today,” Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said at a political meeting ahead of the summit

Hungary has asked for at least four years and 800 million euros ($860 million) in EU funds to adapt its refineries and increase pipeline capacity for alternative suppliers, like Croatia.

But under the compromise proposal the Druzhba pipeline could be excluded from a sanctions package “for the time being”, an EU official told AFP.

– ‘We’re close!’ –

Since failing to capture Kyiv in the war’s early stages, Russia’s army has narrowed its focus, hammering Donbas cities with relentless artillery and missile barrages as it seeks to consolidate its control.

But Ukrainian forces pushed back over the weekend in the southern region of Kherson, the country’s military leadership said.

The Ukrainian general staff claimed the move had put their adversary into “unfavourable positions” around the villages of Andriyivka, Lozovo and Bilohorka and forced Moscow to send reserves to the area.

“Kherson, hold on. We’re close!” it tweeted Sunday.

At the same time, two people were injured following an explosion in the Moscow-controlled city of Melitopol in south-eastern Ukraine, with local pro-Kremlin authorities blaming Kyiv.

Russia-installed authorities said the city had been targeted by a “terrorist attack”.

“The Ukrainian government continues its war on the civilian population and the infrastructure of cities,” a statement said.

According to Russian investigators, at least five people were killed as a result of strikes on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine’s separatist-controlled city of Donetsk.

The DNR said on Telegram that the attack targeted two apartment buildings and three schools, accusing Kyiv of using cluster munitions and artillery.

Bitcoin May Be About to Stop Its 9-Week Red Flame Streak

Bitcoin

Bitcoin is expected to get beyond the 9-week endure marketplace after it’s given buyers a slight desire by way of going up 5.20% over the past 24 hours. Many indicators are pointing to the realization that Bitcoin is probably going up via week 10.

Historically, because the Dollar is going down, Bitcoin is going up – which shows that the next couple of weeks may be the right time for Bitcoin to move up. The Dollar index suggests a drop, that may imply a fortunate time for crypto traders.

In the equal count number, the stock marketplace goes up as nicely, and since the crypto marketplace is associated with the inventory marketplace, we would witness the following bull after a brief at the same time as. Yet, this bull might be laid low with the inventory marketplace’s cutting-edge state.

It also needs to be noted that Bitcoin has broken its crimson candles file, because the 9-week endure was the longest non-stop bearish state so far. Yet, it is predicted now to go lower back up to around $38K.

This estimation is constructed on the truth that a prime down fashion line has been controlling the market’s u.S.A.And downs for a long time. If Bitcoin is going up, the coin’s rate will hit the main downtrend line at around $38K.

After that, the fee either breaks the line and heads better or bounces back into a brand new bearish nation. This may also be affected by the nation of the inventory marketplace, the federal regulations, the global reputation of cryptocurrencies, the Dollar index, and many other elements as properly.

As Bitcoin’s fee goes lower back up, it’ll clearly be an amazing time for crypto investors and fans to pay nearer attention to the market once more.

Norwegian buys 50 Boeing 737 MAX, ending dispute

Norwegian

Norwegian Air Shuttle announced Monday that it would purchase 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes, putting an end to a dispute between the companies and helping to resurrect the US-made aircraft after two deadly crashes.

The jets will be delivered between 2025 and 2028, or around the time that Norwegian’s aircraft leasing contracts expire, and the contract includes an option for 30 more, according to a statement from the company.

The order is welcome news for the US manufacturer’s flagship Boeing 737 MAX 8, which was grounded for 20 months following two fatal accidents and has been gradually returning to service since late 2020.

Norwegian’s order is part of “the resolution of a dispute we have” with Boeing, the company’s chief executive Geir Karlsen told broadcaster TV2.

The Nordic low-cost carrier and Boeing have been locked in a legal battle for several years, with the Norwegian carrier launching legal proceedings against the US giant for compensation following setbacks related to its 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner long-range jets.

Without giving further details, Karlsen mentioned “a compensation of two billion kroner ($212 million, 197 million euros) that we used to buy planes under advantageous conditions.”

Read more; Three Norwegian diplomats have been expelled from Russia, according to Norway

According to Karlsen, the price paid is “much lower” than the one Norwegian had to pay a few years ago for its first 737 MAX — which it has since sold — but also than the one offered by European competitor Airbus.

Norwegian said the deal remains subject to “various closing conditions” that it hopes will be concluded by the end of June.

The company, which currently operates 61 aircraft, plans to ramp up operations to have 70 in service this summer and 85 in the summer of 2023.

– ‘Becoming more normal’ –

Plagued by over-ambitious expansion, technical problems and the Covid pandemic, the company narrowly avoided bankruptcy last year via an extensive restructuring that led it, among other things, to give up its long-haul flight, reduce its fleet and cancel numerous orders.

Securing the 50 aircraft means Norwegian is also returning to fully owning its own fleet after it was forced to rely on leased aircraft due to its financial woes.

Unless the option to buy more aircraft is implemented, Norwegian’s flight capacity is not expected to increase beyond what has already been announced.

“This is rather a sign of an airline that is becoming more normal, that no longer lives exclusively on leased aircraft but owns part of its fleet itself,” Sydbank analyst Jacob Pedersen commented to business website e24.no.

For Boeing, this order solidifies the revival of the 737 MAX aircraft.

The 737 MAX was temporarily grounded worldwide following two crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia, in 2018 and 2019, that killed a combined 346 people.

Following orders from Caribbean Arajet and American Allegiant Air, British carrier IAG (parent company of British Airways) recently ordered 50 planes with an option for 100 more.

Norwegian also stated on Monday that the Boeing 737 MAX 8 is “approximately 14 percent more fuel-efficient compared to the previous-generation aircraft,” limiting emissions and lowering energy costs in the face of rising fuel prices.

Sanctions-hit Russia stockpiling grain: producers

Russia

Russia, one of the world’s largest grain producers, is using sanctions-related export disruptions to boost its reserves, according to the chairman of the country’s grain union on Monday.

Russia’s offensive in Ukraine, combined with Western sanctions, has disrupted deliveries of wheat and other commodities from the two countries, raising fears of global hunger.

Russia and Ukraine produce roughly one-third of the world’s wheat supply.

“Our stocks are nearly 20 percent higher than last year… Instead of supplying the world market, we are replenishing our own stocks,” Arkady Zlochevsky told a press conference.

He said Russia will have exported 36 million tonnes of wheat before June 30, about four million tonnes below its full export potential.

“All the information hysteria about the upcoming famine is actually only helping to drive up prices. It’s not the best game and it can end badly,” Zlochevsky said.

“When the hysteria is over… prices will simply crash,” he said.

The Russian government had hinted that this season’s harvest could break a historic record, but Zlochevsky said the harvest could be closer to 120 million tonnes of grain (including 80 million tonnes of wheat) rather than the 130 million forecast by the agriculture ministry.

Zlochevsky said that only a “very small volume” of Russian wheat is destined for EU countries and Moscow’s deliveries do not transit via Europe but rather through the Middle East.

“We have very strong transit flows through Turkey and Iran… and they remain,” he said, adding that Iran this season became the second-largest buyer after Turkey, surpassing Egypt that for many years was a leading buyer of Russian wheat.

The West has accused Russia of using food commodities as a weapon in its military operation in Ukraine, as well as stealing Ukrainian grain from Russia-controlled territory.

Russia has denied these claims, claiming that if international sanctions against Moscow were lifted, it would establish export corridors in Ukraine and help prevent a global food crisis.

Valencia president Murthy sacked after audio leaks

Valencia

Valencia confirmed on Monday that Anil Murthy has been sacked as president after he changed into heard threatening a participant and criticizing the club’s proprietor, Peter Lim, in a series of leaked audio recordings.

In a declaration, the club stated “an exchange in management is needed so that it will regain the acceptance as true with of the enthusiasts and the community and to place Valencia CF in a function for success. Effective immediately, Anil Murthy will end to be both President and a worker of Valencia CF.”

In the recordings, published in April by Valencian newspaper Superdeporte, Murthy was heard threatening to destroy the reputation of Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler if he left the club on a free transfer.

Murthy was then heard in a separate recording calling Lim “an amateur”, claiming the club’s owner was too much of “a fan” to make sensible business decisions.

“The Board would like to clarify that the content of the leaked conversations between Anil Murthy and various third parties are the personal views of Anil Murthy and not of Valencia CF. Valencia CF disassociates itself from his views,” the statement read.

Murthy’s departure is the latest controversy to engulf Valencia during a turbulent period for the club.

Lim’s Meriton Capital company took over Valencia in 2014 but despite early investment in the team and optimism among the fans, the Singaporean’s commitment and popularity have plummeted in recent years.

The squad has suffered from a drive to cut costs as key players have been sold and not replaced.

“Pushing the ‘big stadium, big players, win La Liga and the Champions League at all costs mentality will lead to a repeat of the past,” said Murthy in 2020.

Valencia has finished ninth, 13th, and ninth in the last three seasons in La Liga, with more than 10,000 fans gathering outside Mestalla in May to protest against the running of the club.

Academy director Sean Bai will “oversee the football operations” as interim acting director fashionable, Valencia confirmed. Non-government director Khojama Kalimuddin will temporarily stand in as president of the board of directors.

Valencia won the remaining of their six La Liga titles in 2004, the 12 months they also lifted the UEFA Cup, and had been Champions League runners-up in 2000 and 2001.

Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile 18 times over 2015 deal limit: IAEA

Iran

The UN nuclear watchdog projected that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium had grown to more than 18 times the limit set in Tehran’s 2015 agreement with world powers.

In its most recent report on Iran’s nuclear program, the International Atomic Energy Agency estimated that “as of May 15, 2022, Iran’s total enriched stockpile was 3,809.3 kilograms.”

The 2015 agreement set a limit of 300 kg (660 pounds) of a specific compound, which is equivalent to 202.8 kg of uranium.

The report also says that Iran is continuing its enrichment of uranium to levels higher than the 3.67 percent limit in the deal.

Read more; Assassinations of Iranian nuclear, military VIPs

The stockpile of uranium enriched up to 20 percent is now estimated to be 238.4 kg, up 56.3 kg since the last report in March, while the amount enriched to 60 percent stands at 43.1 kg, an increase of 9.9 kg.

Enrichment levels of around 90 percent are required for use in a nuclear weapon.

Iran has always insisted its nuclear program is peaceful.

A diplomatic source said the amount of uranium enriched to 60 percent now exceeded the IAEA’s threshold of a “significant quantity”, defined by the agency as an approximate amount above which “the possibility of manufacturing a nuclear explosive cannot be excluded”.

However, the same source pointed out that some uranium would be lost during the process of further enrichment, meaning that in reality “you would need more than 55 kilograms” for that purpose.

In a separate report also issued on Monday, the IAEA reiterated that it still had questions that were “not clarified” regarding previous undeclared nuclear material at three sites named as Marivan, Varamin and Turquzabad.

This is despite a long-running series of attempts by the IAEA to get Iranian officials to explain the presence of this material.

The report said Iran has offered the explanation of an “act of sabotage by a third party to contaminate” the sites, but added no proof had been provided to corroborate this.

According to the diplomatic source, an act of sabotage was “not easy to believe” given “the distribution of the material” that prompted the IAEA’s inquiries.

The latest reports come as talks to restart the landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers stalled in March.

England Test coach McCullum open to Buttler recall

McCullum

England’s new Test coach Brendon McCullum has hinted at a possible return to red-ball duty for Jos Buttler following a blistering run-spree in the Indian Premier League.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Buttler was dropped after a lacklustre return during England’s woeful 4-0 Ashes series loss in Australia.

Despite being one of the world’s best white-ball run-scorers, the 31-year-old averages a modest 31.94 in Test cricket.

And there was no place for Buttler in England’s squad for next week’s opening Test against McCullum’s native New Zealand at Lord’s, with Ben Foakes and Jonny Bairstow selected ahead of what will be the new coach’s first game in charge.

Buttler, however, has been in spectacular form for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, powering the team into Sunday’s final of the Twenty20 franchise competition on the back of four centuries in 16 games, with an average of 58.85 and a stunning strike-rate of 151.47.

McCullum, who saw Buttler’s brilliance in the IPL first-hand as coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, is clearly intrigued by the possibility of getting more out of a player who, for all his undoubted talent, has so far managed just two centuries in exactly 100 Test innings.

“Jos is one of those players you look at instantly and think how could he be so dominant in one form of the game and not quite have found his feet, other than a few fleeting performances, in Test cricket?,” said former New Zealand captain McCullum, himself renowned as an attacking batsman.

“There’s certainly guys you look at and think there’s a lot of talent that could improve the side given the right opportunity. There’s no reason why, if you’re good at T20, you can’t bring those skills into Test cricket and you look at some of the guys who have dominated the IPL in the last two months.”

McCullum is also open to reviving the Test careers of spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, even though the former is officially retired from red-ball internationals.

And he is also “ready to have a conversation” about giving Liam Livingstone, who struck the fastest T20 century by an England batsman, off 42 balls against Pakistan last year, a chance at Test level.

“Obviously you’ve got the likes of Livingstone, Mooen, Rashid,” said McCullum.

“All these guys have played international cricket before, been successful in the other forms of the game and you’d think they’d be able to transition across.”
