Colombia’s presidential election is set to go to a second round

Colombia’s presidential election appears to be headed for a rerun after preliminary results revealed no contender had received more than 50% of the vote on Sunday.

Early results showed left-wing candidate Gustavo Petro with slightly over 40% of the vote; populist former Bucaramanga mayor Rodolfo Hernandez with 28%, and right-wing candidate Federico “Fico” Gutierrez with 23%; with 98 percent of the ballots recorded.
On June 19th, Petro and Hernandez are scheduled to face off in a second round of voting.
There were no notable reports of violence or protest after polls closed late Sunday.
