AC issues non-bailable arrest warrants for Suleman Shehbaz

Suleman Shehbaz

An accountability court on Thursday issued non-bailable arrest warrants for PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif’s son Suleman Shehbaz, in a money laundering reference.

The court has ordered authorities to arrest Suleman and present himself before the court at the next hearing of the reference.

Moreover, the court also asked authorities to submit a report in this regard at the next hearing.

Earlier in June, the National Accountability Bureau said it will contact the National Crime Agency in UK and Interpol to bring back Suleman from London in its ongoing investigation into money laundering charges.

According to a spokesperson of the Bureau, Suleman’s non-bailable arrest warrants had been issued on the money laundering charges. “The Lahore High Court has declared Suleman Shehbaz a fugitive in the money laundering case against the Sharif family,” he had said.

In April last year, the PTI leadership and NAB had alleged that Hamza Shehbaz and Suleman, who is currently in London, are involved in laundering money worth Rs85 billion.

Suleman had rejected the charges as baseless allegations by the PTI government.

He had said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has questions to answer about his own “unexplained assets worth Rs4 billion”.

“I brought money from abroad into Pakistan for investment and that’s not money laundering. Each and everything that I own is declared with the FBR. Every penny that I invested in Pakistan is declared and on-board, and record of each and every asset and business that I have ever owned is available with relevant Pakistani authorities,” Suleman had said.

Honda to roll out first mass-produced electric car in October

Honda first electric car

Japanese automaker Honda will launch its first mass-produced electric car in October, the company said on Thursday.

The EV will go on sale on October 30 at a retail price of about $42,000. Honda aims to sell the compact car, which is fitted with cameras instead of door mirrors, mainly to urban consumers.

The electric vehicle can travel 300 km on a single charge. It is shorter compared to competitors’ EVs, as the company prioritized compactness, forcing it to reduce the size and capacity of the battery. The car is less than 4 meters long.

The compact EV is also equipped with a new parking system designed for use in narrow spaces. Tomofumi Ichinose, Honda’s senior chief engineer, says that “Its smallness is a big attraction,” noting that it will be easy to use in crowded urban areas.

Door mirrors on both sides of the car have been removed so that the rear of the car can be seen on a screen inside through a camera.

Honda claims that the display images will be clear even in the rain. The car has a digital dashboard, comprised of five screens arranged horizontally, to ensure natural vision for the driver.

The model will only be sold in Europe and Japan at the time of its launch in October. Honda expects annual sales of only around 10,000 in Europe, and 1,000 at home, where it will also introduce the model into its car-sharing fleet.

The automaker said it had no plans to market the car in North America or China, its biggest markets where SUVs dominate.

Christchurch Massacre: Shooter gets life imprisonment without parole

Brenton Tarrant Christchurch massacre

Brenton Tarrant, who committed a terrorist act at two Christchurch mosques in 2019 killing more than 50, was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.

Brenton Tarrant admitted to 51 charges of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder during the 2019 shooting rampage at two Christchurch mosques which he live streamed on Facebook.

High Court Judge Cameron Mander said in Christchurch on Thursday that a finite term would not be sufficient.

“Your crimes, however, are so wicked that even if you are detained until you die it will not exhaust the requirements of punishment and denunciation,” said Mander in handing down the sentence.

“As far as I can discern, you are empty of any empathy for your victims,” he said.

Earlier, the prosecutors told the court that Tarrant wanted to instill fear in those he described as invaders and that he carefully planned the attacks to cause maximum carnage.

The 29-year-old, armed with semiautomatic weapons and assault rifles, attacked Muslim worshipers indiscriminately during Friday prayers at the Al-Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Center in Christchurch on March 15, 2019.
