PM Imran announces Karachi Transformation Plan worth Rs 1.1 trillion

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday arrived Karachi on a day-long visit and announced the Karachi Transformation Plan worth Rs 1.1 trillion for the metropolitan city.

He presided over the Karachi Transformation Committee (KTC) meeting at the Governor House to analyze the proposed plan.

PM Imran Khan conducted aerial surveillance of the rain-hit areas of the metropolis.

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, federal and provincial ministers were present in the session.

Karachi Transformation Plan

The premier announced the package in a news briefing afterwards at the Governor House.

Imran Khan said, “Drinking water is a big problem for Karachiites along with nullahs, drainage system, solid waste management and homeless persons. Transport is another issue in the provincial capital including roads.”

“The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is clearing encroachments across the drains. People of Karachi faced difficult time and it is necessary to solve the city’s problems pertaining to infrastructure:, the premier added.

PM Imran to announce special package for rain affected Karachi on Saturday

Prime Minister Imran Khan will arrive in Karachi on Saturday (tomorrow) to resolve the city’s civic and infrastructure problems affected by heavy rainfall.

According to sources, the premier will reach the provincial capital of Sindh at 12:30 pm and will address a press conference at the Governor House at 1:30 pm. He will announce the Karachi Transformation Plan tomorrow.

Later in the day, Prime Minister Imran Khan will visit Pakistan Stock Exchange and will meet Industrialists, Businessmen and traders. He is also expected to meet leaders of the coalition parties.

In a tweet on Thursday, Information Minister Shibli Faraz said that Karachi’s development is a guarantee of Pakistan’s prosperity. “PM Imran Khan is committed to restoring the glory of Karachi as the city of lights.”

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has called for better planning in Karachi before more rains next year after the current monsoon spell left the majority areas submerged in water and without power supply for nearly four days.

In a tweet on Monday, Chaudhry said, “The problem is that if the rain stops today and the situation returns to normal, we will forget everything and return to our normal life. There will be rains again next year, routine life will come to a standstill and there will be a noise. But we should learn from the situation and plan for the next year so that it does not happen.”

Life virtually stopped in Karachi when day-long heavy rainfall on Thursday caused catastrophic scenes in parts of the city.

The lives and properties of residents in several low-lying areas became survivors of severe danger due to the threat of flooding as the rickety drainage system of the provincial capital has almost collapsed.

Furthermore, the largest city of Sindh, Karachi that is also the economic hub of Pakistan portrayed Venice due to flooded streets and Nullahs. At least 20 people in 3 days have been killed in the rain-related incidents.

Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Sindh on Sunday said that efforts are ongoing to drain out rainwater from all areas of Karachi’s Kharadar by this evening.

During his visit to Old City areas, CM Sindh, speaking to media officials said Kharadar’s drainage system chocked after the record torrential downpour in the metropolis, due to which rainwater accumulated on the locality’s streets.

He said at least 20 vehicles of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) have been deployed to clear the area.

He is well aware of the hardships locals have been going through due to flooded streets, he maintained.

CM Murad Ali Shah said he himself headed out on a tour of the area due to the difficulties faced by the residents of the area.

He said he had directed all relevant institutions to speed up the process of drainage of rainwater.

Meanwhile, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Chief Minister Raja Farooq Haider telephoned CM Murad Ali Shah and expressed sadness over the loss of life and property during the latest spell of monsoon.

At least 23 people were killed in Karachi in various rain related  incidents, whereas Pakistan Meteorological Department predicted more showers on Friday.

According to the details, Almost all the major roads of the city including II Chungrigarh Road, University Road, Shahra e Faisal, and underpasses in the city were inundated with no sign of them being cleared anytime soon.

Ghulam Nabi Memon, who is the police chief of the city, said 23 people were killed in Karachi in various rain related incidents.

Chief Meteorological Officer (CMO) of Pakistan Meteorological Department Sardar Sarfraz has predicted more showers today saying moderate spells of rain were possible in the city till afternoon.
