Karachi: KPT underpass closed for traffic, citizens advised to take alternative routes

After heavy rain wreck havoc in Karachi and its parts, the traffic police have temporarily closed the KPT Underpass in Clifton for all kind of traffic.

According to the traffic police, the underpass has been temporarily closed after reservations over its structure after heavy rains.

The measures have been taken keeping in view the safety of precious human lives. Traffic police said that they are seeking advice from technical experts.

They also informed that the traffic has been diverted to alternative routes. Traffic police have urged the citizens to take alternative traffic routes to avoid any inconvenience.

As per the traffic police, due to continuous downpour in the previous weeks, the structure of KPT underpass has weaken and may fall anytime.

Moreover, due to recent rains in the city, several underpasses including Punjab Chowrangi underpass, KPT underpass, Drigh Road underpass and other were filled with accumulated rainwater.

Heavy rain had lashed Karachi and its major parts on Thursday and left the roads, underpasses submerged in over flooded water and killed at least 23 people in various rain related incidents.

As Karachiites are going through severe problems, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), along with the Sindh government, is moving to immediately act and resolve three major problems of Karachi.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, PM Imran said, “The whole nation feels the pain our people in Karachi are going through. However, out of this devastation & suffering there is now a positive development as my govt, along with the Sindh govt, is moving to immediately act & resolve 3 major problems of Karachi.”

Karachi Rain: Death Toll Rises to 23, More predicted on Friday

At least 23 people were killed in Karachi in various rain related  incidents, whereas Pakistan Meteorological Department predicted more showers on Friday.

According to the details, Almost all the major roads of the city including II Chungrigarh Road, University Road, Shahra e Faisal, and underpasses in the city were inundated with no sign of them being cleared anytime soon.

Ghulam Nabi Memon, who is the police chief of the city, said 23 people were killed in Karachi in various rain related incidents.

Chief Meteorological Officer (CMO) of Pakistan Meteorological Department Sardar Sarfraz has predicted more showers today saying moderate spells of rain were possible in the city till afternoon.

The PMD official said that Karachi received unprecedented heavy rain due to interaction of a monsoonal system in Sindh and a westerly wave in Balochistan on Thursday.

Another testing time for Karachiites, as heavy rain lashed Karachi and its major parts on Thursday, roads, underpasses left submerged in over flooded in water.

On the other hand, The MA Jinnah from Gurumandir to Numaish Chowrangi has been closed for all kind of traffic.

Heavy rainfall is currently lashing the city, resulting in a massive traffic jam in parts of the city due to flooded roads.  A massive traffic jam was witnessed at the Jam Sadiq Bridge and Qayyumabad Chowrangi due to closure of Korangi Causeway Road.

The rainwater has gathered outside Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) building and surrounding roads.

Amid the current spell, several roads in Surjani Town, Yousaf Goth, Abdul Raheem Goth and Dada Bhai Town are still submerged in the water.

In its new alert, the Meteorological Department redacted its earlier rain prediction that heavy showers in the city could last until 4pm, saying that now it would last till 11pm.

Rainwater inundated KPT underpass that connects Do Talwar to Teen Talwar at Clifton, while the same situation was observed with the underpass near Punjab Colony.

In a video that circulates online, containers brought for security measures in Muharram could be seen floating in water.

Due to the hassle at the two main underpasses, the flow of traffic was disrupted as traffic officials urged the public to use alternate routes.

On the other hand, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Zaidi took to Twitter to share a video clip in which cars were seen to be driving around in the city’s DHA Phase 6 area in over flooded water.

Light to heavy rain showers continue to lash different parts of Karachi on Thursday, turning the weather pleasant.

Saddar, M.A Jinnah Road, Nursery, Baloch Colony, Site Area, Malir, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Liaquatabad, North Nazimabad and other parts of the city are receiving downpour.

The continued downpour in Karachi has badly affected the infrastructure and routine life in the port-city. Several areas of the city are flooded with rainwater, while heavy losses to properties and human lives are being reported.

On the other hand, Korangi Crossing Road has been blocked since Tuesday for traffic after flooding in Malir River.

Traffic Police in its update said that the traffic to Gudam Chowrangi has been diverted to Jam Sadiq Bridge. The traffic from Baloch Colony being guided to Qayyumabad, a police statement said.

The traffic Police department has advised citizens to take suggested alternate routes to avoid the hassle.

Taking notice of the Karachi’s situation, Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed federal institutions to carry out relief operations and help rain-hit people in Karachi as heavy downpour brought life to a standstill in the city.

PM Khan has directed authorities concerned to step up relief efforts in rain-affected areas of Karachi and use all available resources in proving relief to people of Karachi.
