‘Joyland’ wins Best International Film at the Spirit Awards 2023

Joyland
  • Joyland won the best international film award at Spirit Awards.
  • Saim Sadiq-directed film gained another trophy.
  • In his award speech, he thanked every cast member of the film.

The Spirit Awards 2023’s Best International film went to “Joyland“!
Joyland’s trip to the Oscars may have come to an end, but the Saim Sadiq-directed film gained another trophy to its impressive collection of honours at the 38th Independent Spirit Awards. As noted, the picture which has been hampered by controversy at home managed to overcome four other nominees including Marie Kreutzer’s Corsage, Martika Ramirez Escobar’s Leonor Will Never Die, Davy Chou’s Return to Seoul and Alice Diop’s Saint-Omer.

Saim Sadiq said, “They did send us an email saying you should prepare a speech and I archived it and I didn’t take it seriously at all. Now I’m ashamed because I have so many things to say and so many people to thank and I’m just scared that I’ll forget someone,” in his award-winning speech thanking everyone from producers Riz Ahmed, Malala, and Apoorva Guru Charan to his crew, and cast. He exclaimed that he wouldn’t have come this far without them.

He further said, “Thank you really because to support a film that comes from Pakistan that’s in Urdu and Punjabi and talks about the things that this film talks about, it’s not an easy decision to make.”

He added, “It was easier for me to say I want to make this film but perhaps pretty hard for them to say they want to put their mind behind it so I think they deserve so much credit for it.”

He concluded the speech by saying, “[I want to thank] the three people who really really made this film. Alina Khan, Ali Junejo and Rasti Farooq, this one would not be possible without you. Thank you so much. I hope your future is so so bright.”

Maria B receives criticism for her statement on Sar-e-Rah’s recent episode

  • Maria B has become well-known as a designer.
  • She earlier called for a ban on Joyland and spoke against the transgender problem.
  • Maria B intervened and voiced her disapproval of Sar e Rah’s new episode.

Over the years, the name Maria B has become well-known as a designer. People are aware of her collections, designs, and strong opinions on a variety of subjects that she presents on social media. Due to her comments on the movie Joyland and the supposed propagation of LGBTQ ideals in Pakistan through the media and social media, she has recently been involved in public fights. She earlier called for a ban on Joyland and has subsequently been speaking out strongly against the transgender problem.

In a recent episode of Sar e Rah, Muneeb Butt is depicted as being intersex, and how his father, played by Nabeel Zafar, is very sensitive to situations, which helps him achieve his goals. Yet a drama clip that was taken out of context and went viral gave the impression that Nabeel was indoctrinating the youngster with trans ideas.

Maria B intervened and voiced her disapproval of the video on Instagram:

The way Maria ripped things out of context before calling it propaganda infuriated several people. They also urged her to watch the programme first and to treat members of this gender with more respect. What the internet has to say is as follows:

It has been a long time coming, but it looks that Pakistani dramas are finally catching up with the times and beginning to develop stories that reflect the lives and struggles of Pakistani women and intersex people. We are excited to see what the next episode holds for its viewers.

Farasat Anees says: ‘T-series must reach out to me before using my song’

Farasat Anees
  • Farasat Anees criticised Bollywood production company T-series.
  • He claimed that T-series has stolen his song ‘Biba’.
  • Farasat further added that they could have reached out to me before using my song.

Farasat Anees, a Pakistani artist, criticised Bollywood production company T-series on Instagram for stealing his song “Biba” for the soundtrack of a forthcoming film. The song “Biba” was initially composed for the Pakistani movie “Joyland,” which was nominated for an Oscar.

Farasat Anees, a singer from Pakistan, used Instagram to criticise Bollywood production company T-series for using his song “Biba” without permission for a forthcoming film’s soundtrack. The Pakistani Oscar-nominated movie “Joyland” initially featured the song “Biba.”

In an interview with the Indian publication The Print, Anees stated that the music company had not contacted him before utilising one of his songs: “A billion-dollar company like T-Series should be professional in its approach. They (the music directors) could have at least reached out to me or perhaps mailed me once before putting out the song. There was no communication from their end. Perhaps there could have been a counter-quote, and we could have made something together.”

Anees further claimed that hearing T-Series’ “Biba” gave him a strange feeling and that the company is notorious for stealing Pakistani songs: ‘“This is not the first time they have done something like this. They’ve earlier done this with Abrar’s song. If nothing else, this only motivates me that such a big label has copied my song and that makes me want to do better work further.”

Another Pakistani song ‘Biba’ is copied by Bollywood

Biba
  • Bollywood will continue to appropriate Pakistani classics.
  • T-Series was called out by Farasat Anees for stealing his song “BIBA.”
  • Anees posted a video on Instagram that includes clips from both songs.

Undoubtedly, Bollywood will continue to appropriate Pakistani classics. T-Series, the music giant of B-Town, is here to ruin yet another Lollywood musical score after distorting Nach Punjaban, Disco Deewane, and numerous other songs. The Indian music company was recently called out by Pakistani singer Farasat Anees for stealing his song “BIBA,” which was used in the Pakistani Oscar-nominated movie Joyland. Anees claimed to have fans in Pakistan and India in an interview with a local media outlet called Images. Anees has sent emails to the record company but hasn’t gotten a response, which irritates him.

Anees posted a video on Instagram that includes clips from both songs and asks viewers to comment on whether they think the song has been stolen.

“What a disgrace! T-Series [is] stealing our work because it has been trending in the world. Me and my brothers, Toshi and Slick Trick, worked day and night to bring this song where it is. PLEASE HAVE SOME SHAME and stop ruining every good song from Pakistan,” he captioned the post.

Anees further wrote, “The love and respect Indians showed to our version of ‘BIBA’ was massive. We will always be grateful for that. [They are] also supporting us in the comment section of this cheap copy of ‘BIBA’. Will always be thankful to listeners across the border!”

Faysal Quraishi’s criticism on Maria B makes people unhappy

  • In Kuch Ankahi, a poster of Joyland was seen in the backdrop of a scene.
  • Maria B pointed it out as subliminal promotion of the LGBTQ agenda.
  • Faysal Quraishi says It is a Pakistani movie therefore advertising it is acceptable.

In the drama Kuch Ankahi, a poster for Joyland was recently spotted in the backdrop of a scene in which Sajal Aly was standing in the front. Maria B pointed this out as a subliminal promotion of the LGBTQ agenda. She declared that she will continue to advocate for intersex people while refusing to let the transgender agenda overshadow the true intersex community and its struggles.

When analysing the programme, Faysal Quraishi called Maria B out on her fury and asked, “What does she want us to place Pathaan posters in the drama?” It is a Pakistani movie, he claimed, therefore advertising it is acceptable.

People are unhappy with Faysal Quraishi’s position and claim that Maria B is not speaking out against a movie but rather, as she puts it, against the transgender agenda. What was said on the internet was as follows:

In recent days, Maria B has been outspoken about her opinions regarding the promotion of LGBTQ people in the nation. She was vehemently opposed to Joyland and requested that Pakistan outlaw the movie. Maria B has expressed her opinions, saying that while she respects the rights of intersex persons, she cannot accept the advancement of the LGBTQ agenda in a country that practises Islam.

The film Joyland was first outlawed in all of Pakistan but was eventually made legal everywhere else, with the exception of Punjab, after it was charged with promoting the LGBTQ agenda there. The movie was nominated for an Oscar and won big at the Cannes Film Festival, but it didn’t make the final list of nominees.

Maria B is speaking out against those who think it’s acceptable to alter their gender if it makes them uncomfortable. She is also protesting scrapfest with a louder voice. She commented,“ We also have dramas promoting joyland/transgenders subliminally. WE ARE NOT STUPID WE GET IT. WAKE UP PAKISTAN… AND SEE THE NEW AGENDA IC. Sarwat Gillani gives advice over women encouragement

Sarwat Gillani
  • Sarwat Gillani expressed her desire to change how women are portrayed in Pakistani.
  • She then thought back on her earlier roles.
  • Sarwat responded, “I think our girls should be watching 26 episodes of how not to get married.

Sarwat Gillani highlighted her desire to change how women are portrayed in Pakistani television and film in an interview with JORE. She then thought back on her earlier roles and everything that she had learned from them.

“I believe that as performers, we have a duty to be mindful of the behaviours we promote. Even when I was portraying characters like Satisavitri, the girl next door, or a damsel in distress, I would find myself wondering why we weren’t talking about the extraordinary things that other women were accomplishing. How many of these sad stories are we going to do, I wondered even then. Sarwat disclosed.

Sarwat Gillani sensed things moving as Churails approached her. I actually always fought for women’s rights on many platforms before Churails. I thought that, on the one hand, I’m urging women to speak up, so how can I be acting like a woman who can do nothing for herself on the other? I would no longer be able to defend a character this meek and weak. The discrepancy there is significant.

Sarwat responded, “I think our girls should be watching 26 episodes of how not to get married – because the whole premise of dramas today is whether a girl is good enough to be married or whether she will be accepted by her in-laws,” when asked about the kinds of stories that women and girls need to see on television.

Unapologetically, Sarwat said, “Girls have raised their standards in Pakistan; they are more career-oriented, multitaskers, and wise; even as housewives, they take care of a lot of things on their own; there are a lot of successful women who have overcome a lot of obstacles. not just personally, but also professionally. And talking about that is not permitted. A lovely medium, art allows you to express the most repulsive topics in their purest form. like in Mataye Jaan’s Hania. Why aren’t we discussing information that is more realistic, useful, and elevating for Pakistani women?

Why, the actor questioned, must we always discuss demeaning women? That information won’t benefit women. It will just support [problematic] male behaviour!

Oscar-nominated Pakistani movie “Joyland” is releasing In India

Joyland
  • Sadiq’s film Joyland would have a global release, including in India.
  • Joyland’s production crew has confirmed that it will debut in India.
  • Sadiq’s creation unexpectedly managed to make it to the Oscars as Pakistan’s official entry.

Given how Indian authorities treated Bilal Lashari’s The Legend of Maula Jatt, the prospects of any Pakistani film being released in India were small; yet, there is one cinematic classic Joyland that will soon be released in the neighbouring country.

Joyland, directed by Saim Sadiq, is one of the best works ever produced in Pakistan and is breaking all rules.

Variety claimed that Sadiq’s film Joyland, which had its US premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, would have a global release, including in India. The Oscars-shortlisted film Joyland’s production crew has confirmed that it will debut in India (distributed by PVR). In addition, Shoaib Mansoor’s Bol, which was released approximately ten years ago, was the last movie to be released in India before Sadiq’s most recent offering.

Sadiq’s creation unexpectedly managed to make it to the Oscars as Pakistan’s official entry and was also shortlisted despite the criticism and a restriction on theatrical release in some locations throughout the nation.

Before Joyland’s production, Sadiq talked about his choice and said: “The opportunity to represent Pakistan at the Oscars with a movie that I really feel is an accurate and sympathetic depiction of who we are as a nation fills me with awe, gratitude, and excitement. The triumphs and tragedies of these characters should encourage empathy in viewers both in Pakistan and beyond. We shall require a lot of prayers and well wishes from our folks in the upcoming months as we travel the path ahead.”

The director, age 31, continued, “We frequently bemoan the fact that, despite the existence of numerous outstanding artists across all genres, Pakistani art has continued to be woefully underrepresented in the global art scene. But this year has already been different. So I’ll take this opportunity to feel optimistic. I thank the selecting committee and wish Pakistan and Joyland the best of luck.”

Sania Saeed, Junejo Khan, Sarwat Gilani, Rasti Farooq, Salman Peerzada, and Sohail Samir are all featured in the ensemble cast of Joyland. Recently appointed executive producers for the movie are Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai and actor-director Riz Ahmed.

Sarwat Gilani talks about men beating their wives

Sarwat Gilani
  • Sarwat Gilani is a very talented actress,
  • She talked about her transition from portraying weak characters to powerful protagonist.
  • “All these women who are deceived, abused, and tormented by males, support that narrative”.

Sarwat Gilani, a renowned type-casting culture-buster, is one of the many talented actors. She extended her horizons and opted for strong-willed female characters in Churails and Qatil Haseenaon Ke Naam. While the 40-year-old is cautious about what she represents, she is also conscious of who she collaborates with and how she distinguishes between art and the artist.

The Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 diva talked about her transition from portraying weak characters to powerful protagonists in an interview with JORE. The Joyland star bemoaned how preconceptions and misogyny impacted the field and the calibre of work created. Gilani also discussed the influence personal issues have on an actor’s career.

We need to talk about principles and self-respect, Gilani said when addressing drama serials that encourage women to fall in love with stalkers or harassers. We must educate. Someone who beats his wife or pursues girls is not a guy. Men will continue to be how they are as long as we don’t demonstrate what a guy should be.

The Yeh Ishq Hai actor expressed his opinion on how public figures accused of harassment, whether in Hollywood or Lollywood, affect the environment on the sets: “Even if a certain person is a great artist but he’s a child molester, or he’s beaten up his wife but he’s a great actor, you should not work with them by principle. When the #MeToo movement first emerged in Hollywood, a large number of female A-listers had been silent about the harassing filmmakers. However, people spoke up when they could, and this entire movement came as a result. the dynamics for women in the entertainment industry while working on Churails. “Even before Churails, I was constantly promoting women’s rights on many forums,” she claimed. Because I’m urging women to speak up on one end and acting like a woman who can do nothing for herself on the other, I felt like I would no longer be able to defend a persona this meek and weak. That is a massive paradox.

Gilani explained how an actor’s career does not serve as the necessary attestation to be referred to as a good human being. She said, “Art is about expression; it’s not about keeping people quiet. So, it should be obvious what to do if someone is a wonderful artist but a bad person.

The Pujaran actress lamented how women in Pakistani society are pressured into covering up domestic violence, saying, “All these women who are deceived, abused, and tormented by males, actually embrace that story, they want to cover up the truth. Because “izzat ki baat hai,” a wife is not permitted to discuss her husband’s extramarital activities in public. So, while it is entirely acceptable for men to cheat, it is insulting for women to discuss it? You’ve been teaching us all our lives that lying and cheating are wrong, and now you’re telling us that beta is alright to let go of. No! You’re so perplexed.

Joyland has risen to new heights after being chosen for the International Feature Film category at the Oscars.

An international feature film with a transgender topic from Pakistan made the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shortlists for 10 categories for the 95th Academy Awards.

The film, which was at first outlawed for having “objectionable content,” is said to be the first Pakistani effort to be nominated for an Oscar, the highest-profile honor in the entertainment business.

Other films in this genre include Argentina from Argentina, Corsage from Austria, Close from Belgium, Cambodia’s Return to Seoul, Holy Spider from Denmark, Saint Omer from France, All Quiet on the Western Front from Germany, The Quiet Girl from Ireland, Bardo from Mexico, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths from Mexico, The Blue Caftan from Morocco, EO from Poland, Decision to Leave from South Korea, and Cairo Conspiracy from Sweden.

Leading celebrities and activists like Noble Aureate Malala and British actor Riz Ahmed praised the Oscar nomination as the media took notice of Joyland’s most recent accomplishment.

Malala recently sent a happy message on Instagram. “Everyone behind the screen who was on the screen. You guys did such an amazing job. Being a part of this endeavor is a great honor for me. For all of the artists and for Pakistan, it is really an incredible time. The squad must be aware of how proud everyone is of them, she wrote.

A screenshot of an article detailing Joyland’s Oscars submission was also posted by Riz Ahmad, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and others.

The film first encountered a number of issues in its own country. It was prohibited in Punjab after the censor board cleared it because it had extremely unpleasant content that was opposed to Pakistani religious and social norms.

She wrote a sweet long note along with her pictures which read, “On a late Sunday afternoon, two slightly dysfunctional but incredibly warm and loving families got together to celebrate their frustrating children after many years of waiting for us to be ready.
I am so grateful that we were given the time to explore ourselves as partners and as individuals without pressure (ok there was some pressure @ mama) to be able to enjoy this moment fully, without any doubt.”

“It felt easy, like it always has, and it felt like home, like it always has been. There was laughter and food and cake and flowers and only the biggest smiles and only a few inappropriate jokes (which is a triumph).”

“I am very self conscious about sharing my personal life and even more so about sharing public adoration – but I adore you @sarwan_saleh. Thank you for being the most gentle, loving partner who bears all my neurosis with grace and understanding. I still wish you didn’t sleep so much but Its okay kyoun kay main bohot khush houn (and you keep me well fed).”
