Filmmaker Mohammed Ali Naqvi Appointed As PASC Chairperson

Filmmaker Mohammed Ali Naqvi, commonly known as Mo Naqvi, has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Pakistan Academy Selection Committee (PASC), succeeding director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

The PASC is responsible for choosing Pakistan’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards each year.

Naqvi, renowned for his impactful storytelling, was inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2022, a testament to his influential body of work. His latest documentary, The Accused: Damned Or Devoted, has earned a Primetime Emmy nomination this year.

Expressing his honour and excitement, Mohammed Ali Naqvi stated, “I am deeply grateful for this opportunity, and I commit myself to continue elevating Pakistani cinema on the international stage.”

His immediate focus is on forming a dynamic selection committee, with several eminent professionals already confirming their participation. Naqvi believes their combined efforts will further enhance Pakistani cinema’s global presence.

His impressive portfolio includes producing the hit Netflix Original docuseries Turning Point: 9/11 and the War on Terror, earning him membership in both the Motion Picture Academy and the Television Academy. His work has received accolades, including an Emmy Television Academy Honour for the Showtime Original documentary Shame and Emmy-nominated projects Among the Believers and The Accused: Damned Or Devoted?

Beyond his filmmaking pursuits, Naqvi is a board member of Mukhtaran Mai’s Women Welfare Group, demonstrating his commitment to social causes.

The Academy Awards and the Oscars used to be dominated by white people, but as Hollywood has become more diverse, we have seen many other people of colour receive recognition for their talent, and now there are projects and artists from various racial groups who are honoured at the event each year. Pakistani content is also receiving a lot of attention this year as a result of the success of the Cannes Film Festival-winning movie Joyland, which has since received numerous accolades at other events.

Many Pakistani celebrities were present at the party that Priyanka Chopra held for all the Asian nominees and Oscars shortlist candidates this year. Alina Khan, Saim Sadiq, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, and Ali Sethi, the star of Pasoori, were also observed at the pre-Oscars party. She wore a light blue denim jacket with matching jeans and black sunglasses.

Deepika Padukone revealed on Thursday that she will be one of the stars giving an honor at the 95th Academy Awards, which will take place on March 12 in Los Angeles. The presenters’ identities, including those of stars Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Riz Ahmed, and Emily Blunt, were listed in the actor’s Instagram post. While paparazzi and admirers greeted her at the arrival gate on Friday night, Deepika was spotted arriving at the Mumbai airport and departing in her car. This was Deepika’s first public appearance following her announcement that she will be attending the Academy Awards for the first time and even presenting an award this year.

The 95th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolly Theatre in Los Angeles on March 12 (March 13 in India). Three Indian movies are vying for the coveted prizes this year. The RRR song Naatu Naatu is up for Best Original Music, All That Breathes by Shaunak Sen is up for Best Documentary Feature Film, and The Elephant Whisperers by Guneet Monga is up for Best Documentary Short.

Deepika last appeared in the movie Pathaan, which also starred Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham, Dimple Kapadia, and Ashutosh Rana. Project K and Fighter, starring Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan, are two of her future movies.

Malala Yousafzai’s Documentary Receives Oscar Nomination 2023

Malala Yousafzai recently joined “Stranger at the Gate” as an executive producer.
The documentary is nominated for Oscar 2023.
It has been selected for the category of Best Documentary Short Film.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, who earlier this month announced joining “Stranger at the Gate” as executive producer, has expressed thanks following the documentary’s nomination for Best Documentary Short Film.

In a statement to Variety, Yousafzai said, “I hope the film challenges every viewer to question their assumptions and show kindness to everyone they meet.” She later shared on Twitter, “When I first saw this film, it opened my mind and changed my perspective. I am honoured to support Joshua Seftel’s Stranger at the Gate, a powerful true story about redemption.”

The documentary “Stranger at the Gate,” which Joshua Seftel directed and produced, describes how former US Marine Richard McKinney plans a terrorist attack on the Muncie mosque.

“So wonderful to see @strangeratthegate nominated for Best Documentary Short for this year’s Academy Awards! Congratulations to @jrseftel, @smartypantspictures and especially the good people of the Islamic Center in Muncie, Indiana. I am honoured that you invited me to be part of such a noble story,” captioned Malala on an Instagram post.

McKinney described his initial impression of those inside the centre as “These people were killers” in an interview with Star Press. The ex-Marine, on the other hand, was viewed by those inside as troubled and in need of their friendship.

In addition to the centre she and her husband founded, Bibi Bahrami praised the nomination on Tuesday as another engine for enduring peace and understanding. Bibi Bahrami continued,”My husband and I are absolutely blessed to be able to contribute and make a difference towards improving understanding and reducing hatred across communities in the U.S.,”

“”I feel humble and blessed that my husband Saber, my son Zaki, and I are part of this amazing message that shows how love and understanding can always overcome hate,” the woman continued. “After 9/11, our Muslim community had a significant concern and stress over the safety and livelihoods of our children and grandchildren, with rising Islamophobia and increased hate crimes towards Muslims.” We are thankful to call this great country, which is home to amazing people standing up and defending the truth, home.”

Joyland, a movie from Pakistan, hasn’t been given its first Oscar nomination in the category of international feature films. Joyland, the first movie from Pakistan to ever be selected for an Academy Award shortlist, did not receive a nomination.

Hollywood formally began the run-up to the Academy Awards on March 12 with the release of the sci-fi blockbuster Everything Everywhere All At Once, which received the most nominations with 11.

Irish black humour With nine nominations each, The Banshees of Inisherin and the World War I movie All Quiet on the Western Front shared second place. Elvis, the rock biopic, received eight nominations, and Steven Spielberg’s quasi-memoir The Fabelmans, received seven.

For this historic occasion, he will collaborate with M3GAN star Allison Williams.

The announcement will be made at 8:30 a.m. ET/5:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater of the Academy and will be broadcast live on ABC’s Good Morning America, the ABC morning programme announced Wednesday.

Along with GoodMorningAmerica.com, ABC News Live, Disney+, Oscars.org, Oscar.com, and the Academy’s social media channels including Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, it will also be streamed live on these websites.

The Long Goodbye, a highly praised live-action short film that Ahmed co-wrote with Aneil Karia, earned him his first Oscar last year. He had previously received a nomination for Sound of Metal. Other works include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the Emmy-winning miniseries The Night Of.
