Sean Penn continues to grapple with the aftermath of Will Smith’s infamous slap of Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars, which transpired nearly a year and a half ago.

In a recent conversation with Variety, Sean Penn expressed his bewilderment at the infamous incident involving Will Smith and Chris Rock, asking, “Why the heck did you just spit on yourself and everybody else with this foolish thing?” The actor went on to express his dismay, asking, “Why are you guys standing and applauding his worst moment as a person?”

He also expressed disappointment in the event organizers for preventing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from making an appearance.

Penn drew parallels to his own 1987 assault conviction, suggesting a connection to the infamous incident.

While acknowledging that he had only met Will Smith once and found him to be pleasant, Penn praised Smith’s exceptional performance in King Richard.

However, he asserted that Smith’s actions on that fateful night undermined his own career achievements and the prestigious honor he had received.

Ahead of the Oscars in 2023, host Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at Will Smith’s infamous incident by pointing out the carpet’s new colour.

The red carpet is the symbol of any celebrity-studded event in show business, but the Oscars 2023 have other plans. For the first time, the Academy Awards will use a champagne-colored carpet, breaking with decades of tradition. While the reason for the carpet’s change in colour is being debated, Jimmy Kimmel has a rather amusing explanation involving Will Smith’s infamous incident.

One of the most memorable moments from the Oscars 2022 was Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock in the face after the latter made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s baldness. Despite the fact that the infamous incident occurred a year ago, discussions and jokes about it have never stopped.

The Oscars 2023 preparations are currently underway, and host Jimmy Kimmel is keeping everyone up to date. The upcoming Oscars ceremony will be the host’s third. In a recent video, Kimmel stood outside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, discussing the decision to change the carpet’s colour. Kimmel discussed the ongoing debate over whether there will be any trouble at the Oscars this year, and expressed his hope that there will be none.

He further took a dig at Will Smith’s slap gate incident and joked the champagne colour signifies the award show will not have any bloodshed. Jimmy Kimmel said, “But if there is, I think the decision to go with a champagne carpet rather than a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be shed.” He added how such a thing can only happen in Hollywood and said, “I’ve never really done play-by-play for carpeting before.”

While there are several theories about the Oscars 2023 carpet’s colour change, it appears to be a creative change. Lisa Love and Met Gala creative director Raul Avila advised on the decision and ensured that the carpet covered the entire floor. Furthermore, Love stated that they wanted to change the show from a day event to a night event.

Willow Smith said during a recent interview with Billboard that the ensuing media reaction after his dad slapped the comedian “didn’t rock me as much as my own internal demons.”

“I see my whole family as being human and I love and accept them for all their humanness,” she added. “Because of the position that we’re in, our humanness sometimes isn’t accepted, and we’re expected to act in a way that isn’t conducive to a healthy human life and isn’t conducive to being honest.”

Willow previously shared a cryptic message in some tweets shortly after her dad resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “The meaning of life is found in challenge,” Willow wrote, adding: “Life is a series of reactions.”

Will Smith attacked Rock after he made light of Jada Pinkett Smith.

Will, who is now 53 years old, mounted the stage at the Oscars on February 24 and hit Chris Rock, who is 57 years old, across the face. Will has now uploaded a video on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook on Friday, in which he apologizes to Rock once more and tells him, “I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

“I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk, and when he is he will reach out,” Will said. “So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Will explained in his Oscars acceptance speech for Best Actor why he didn’t apologize to Rock. Will said, “I was fogged out by that point. It’s all fuzzy.”

The King Richard actor continued by expressing his desire to apologize to Rock’s mother, “I saw an interview that his mother did. That’s one of the things about that moment I didn’t realize, I wasn’t thinking, but how many people got hurt in that moment.”

“So I want to apologize to Chris’s mother; I want to apologize to Chris’s family, specifically Tony Rock [Chris’s younger brother]. We had a great relationship. Tony Rock was my man. This is probably irreparable,” Will said.

After Rock made a joke about Jada’s shaved head during the March ceremony, Will smacked him onstage, earning him a 10-year suspension from ceremonies and associated events from the Academy.
