Journalist community meets Governor Punjab

LAHORE: The representatives of journalist community under the banner of Joint Action Committee (JAC) met with Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider.

In the meeting, the representatives of journalistic organizations informed the Governor of Punjab about their concerns on the Punjab Defamation Bill and said that the Defamation Bill is an attempt to stifle the freedom of expression.

On this occasion, Governor Punjab Saleem Haider said that all the stakeholders will be taken into confidence on the controversial clauses. Governor assured journalists that he will not sign bill and added that bill should have been consulted earlier.

Governor Punjab said that the Pakistan People’s Party does not support the current bill and party will stands with the journalists.

Punjab Governor accepts Thomson’s resignation

LAHORE: Governor Punjab Baligh ur Rehman has accepted the resignation of Michael A. Thomson principal of Aitchison College Lahore.

Sources at the Governor’s House, Amina Imran has been appointed as the acting principal of Aitchison College in place of Michael A. Thompson.

The Governor of Punjab has also approved the fee waiver policy, according to which, if the student moves to another city for 3 years, he will get a fee waiver of up to 50 percent.

It may be recalled that last month the principal of Aitchison College informed the staff of his resignation through a letter, saying that the biased actions of the Governor’s House had damaged the governance and management of the school.

Michael A. Thompson added in the letter that there is no room for politics and nepotism in the school, and will not play any role in management and admissions after April 1.

On the other hand, Governor Punjab Baligh ur Rehman strongly denied the allegations of Principal Aitchison College and said that Michael A. Thomson was receiving a salary of 4 million, which has been audited.

He further said that Principal Aitchison College used to take more than 100 vacations in a year, this tactic has been adopted by Principal Aitchison College to avoid inquiries.

Governor Punjab summons Punjab Assembly session on Feb 23

LAHORE: The session of Punjab Assembly will be convened on February 23 (tomorrow) where newly elected members will take oath.

Governor Punjab Muhammad Baligh ur Rehman has also issued a notification to convene a meeting of the Punjab Assembly.

The Punjab Assembly session will be held tomorrow at 10 am, the newly elected members will take oath in the Punjab Assembly session. The Speaker Punjab Assembly Sardar Sabatin Khan will administer the oath to the newly elected members.

It should be remembered that Punjab Assembly is the first provincial assembly which has been convened after the general elections held on February 8 in the country.

In the Punjab Assembly, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz( PML-N) is the party with the highest number of seats with 137 members, while independent candidates are at the second position. Many independent candidates have also announced to join the PML-N.

BAHAWALPUR: Governor Punjab Engr. Muhammad Baligh ur Rahman said that universities are the bright face of society and play a key role in the development of the country.

He said along with traditional teaching, universities also perform literary and social services and patronize personalities associated with them.

“It is very gratifying that the IUB is awarding honorary PhD degrees to prominent personalities of the country, he said.

These views were expressed by Governor Punjab and Chancellor Engr. Muhammad Baligh ur Rahman while addressing the special convocation 2023 at the IUB.

He said that Muhammad Shafi Shakir Shuja Abadi is undoubtedly a strong reference to Seraiki language and literature and a proud asset of the South Punjab. His services to the Seraiki language and literature are worth remembering.

Governor Punjab said that Bahawalpur is a center of lush green gardens, libraries, and great educational institutions and has an important role in national development.

The educational institutions here have produced the best academicians, writers and poets, athletes and scientists who have proved their talents at the national and international level.

Among these institutions, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur is at the forefront and the role of the IUB in promoting education from Baltistan to Sindh and Balochistan has been highly commendable.

Governor Punjab said that our educational institutions are morally bound to produce educated youth who are not only endowed with technical skills but also have high personal standards.

The Governor appreciated the efforts of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Naveed Akhtar, the faculty, and their team, whose hard work is making the Islamia University of Bahawalpur a major academic hub.

In his welcome address on this occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Naveed Akhtar said that the IUB is a university of 100 years old historical identity.

Today is a day of pride for the entire university that the eminent poet of the region Muhammad Shafi Shakir Shuja Abadi and university alumni and media luminary Javed Chaudhary are being awarded honorary PhD degrees.

LAHORE: Governor Punjab Baligh-ur-Rehman has underlined the need of collective efforts to tackle the challenge of climate change.

He was talking to the participants of the foreign diplomatic course belonging to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries in Lahore.

He said that Pakistan exports top quality textile products in the international market.

The Governor stressed upon the Asian countries to take advantages of the Export Processing Zones established under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC).

He said that boosting cooperation with the ASEAN countries in political, education and tourism sectors will help bolster regional ties.

He said that strengthening of the people to people contacts is very necessary for the improvement of the relations among the countries.

The Ministers taking an oath comprise SM Tanvir, Doctor Javed Akram, Ibrahim Murad, Bilal Afzal, Doctor Jamal Nasir, Mansoor Qadir, Syed Azfar Ali Nasir and Amir Mir.

Caretaker CM Mohsin Naqvi remarked that the Punjab interim set up is completely non-political and impartial adding that it is the responsibility of the caretaker set up to hold transparent, fair and free elections. LAHORE: Governor Punjab Baligh ur Rehman has said that the dissolution of the assembly after the summary of the Chief Minister Punjab is a constitutional requirement but a difficult stage.

In one of his statements Governor Baligh ur Rehman has said that the decision to dissolve the assembly is to be taken in two days and the Punjab Assembly will be dissolved as soon as the summary is approved.

He has said that premature dissolution of the assembly is a difficult decision for the democrats, but Ramadan is 90 days later, the date of elections has to be seen.

The Governor of Punjab said that the date of election must be given before dissolution of the Assembly and in this regard, the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition must jointly settle the issues within three days.

It should be noted that the Governor Punjab has received the summary of the Punjab Chief Minister for the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly.

In his twitter message, Governor Punjab Baligh ur Rehman confirmed that he has received the summary of Chief Minister Punjab for the dissolution of Punjab Assembly.

Governor Punjab said that “Whatever decision I will take, I will do it with a heavy heart.” He said the Punjab Assembly is a house of public representatives, dissolving the assembly is not an easy decision.

He said that it will be an unpleasant moment to implement the advice of Chief Minister Punjab.

LAHORE:A petition was filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking the removal of Balighur Rehman from the post of Punjab Governor.

Shabbir Ismail filed a plea through Azhar Siddique Advocate to remove Governor Punjab Baligh ur Rehman from office in Lahore High Court.

In the petition filed in the court, the President, Governor, Chief Minister, Speaker, Federal Government, Punjab Government, and Chief Secretary of Punjab have been made parties.

Petitioner submitted that there is no time restriction in the constitution for the vote of confidence, four to seven days has been given in the constitution for the motion of no confidence.

It was stated in the petition that the Governor violated Article 10A of the Constitution and Assembly Rules by asking the Chief Minister for a vote of confidence. The Governor has no authority to remove the Chief Minister and the Cabinet.

It was further stated in the statement that the Governor took a biased, malicious unilateral action by removing the Chief Minister and the Cabinet from their posts. The Governor violated his oath by taking unconstitutional and illegal actions.

In the petition, it was requested that for the protection of democratic values, the governor Baligh ur Rehman should be immediately removed from office and action should be taken against him and the orders of the governor to call the session and to dissolve the chief minister, the cabinet should be annulled.

Earlier, a letter was sent to the President of Pakistan and the Prime Minister to remove the Governor of Punjab Baligh ur Rehman by the Chairman of the Judicial Activism Panel.

MULTAN: Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Friday termed the Governor Punjab’s step as an attack on democracy, constitution, and law.

Talking to media in Multan, Vice-Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf(PTI) Shah Mahmood Qureshi said an elected chief minister and cabinet have de-notified through an illegal and unconstitutional way. He said unfortunately there is no rule of law in the country and only might is right policy exists.

He regretted how Chief Secretary Punjab has implemented illegal and unconstitutional step of Governor Punjab. He said PTI is expecting such an unconstitutional step from the federal government thus party will stage a protest outside the Governor House in Lahore.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the government should focus on the national economy. He said traders, industrialists, and farmers seemed upset over the country’s poor economic situation.

The former foreign minister said terrorist activities are increasing once again and even federal capital is not saved from terrorism.

Vice-Chairman PTI said Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari should be in Afghanistan in this crisis time but Bilawal has no time to visit Kabul.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi hoped that Lahore high court will take this case to its logical conclusion.

Opposition Leader Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Shaikh speaking to the media outside the Anti-Terrorism Court said that he has once again appeared in the Terrorism Court.

He said that dacoits and thieves have lodged politically motivated cases against him.

Haleem Adil Sheikh said that Asif Zardari and the Sindh government are involved in every dirty work done in Pakistan. He said the trading of consciences in the Sindh House was done and now the market has been set up for the purchase of MPAs of Punjab with looted money of Sindh.

LAHORE: After the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s verdict and the oath-taking ceremony of Parvez Elahi as the new Chief Minister of Punjab, the oath of the cabinet of the province was suspended as Governor Punjab refused to take the oath on Thursday, BOL News reported. 

Earlier, Governor Punjab Baligh ur Reman, on July 26, refused to take the oath from the former Parvez Elahi as the head of the province. The oath-taking ceremony of Elahi was taken by the President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi, at the President’s House, Islamabad.

According to a report by BOL News, last night, the coronation ceremony of the newly appointed CM resulted in a discussion between Baligh ur Rehman and the former CM of Punjab Hamza Shehbaz Sharif.  The government’s consultation on the oath of office is still ongoing.

Former Governor and prominent PTI leader Umar Sarfaraz Cheema also refused to take Hamza Shehbaz Sharif’s oath of office when he was appointed, while 20 PTI MPs became dissidents and voted for Hamza in the Provincial Assembly.

According to the sources, Prime Minister Imran Khan is expected to visit the city on Thursday, where he will hold meetings with Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar and Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar.

Sources said that during the visit, Prime Minister Imran Khan will be briefed on the status of coronavirus and vaccines in the province.

Meanwhile, Punjab reported 22 deaths and 2,040 new cases of the novel coronavirus over the last 24 hours, taking the tally of confirmed infections in the province to 306,929.

According to the Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department, 22 more people died of the virus during this period, pushing the death toll by coronavirus to 8,572. Of the 2,040 new cases, Lahore reported 1,049 coronavirus infections.

The pandemic claimed 79 more lives across the country over the previous 24 hours, pushing the death toll from the disease to 18,149.
