Governor awards honorary PhD degrees to Shakir Shuja Abadi

BAHAWALPUR: Governor Punjab Engr. Muhammad Baligh ur Rahman said that universities are the bright face of society and play a key role in the development of the country.

He said along with traditional teaching, universities also perform literary and social services and patronize personalities associated with them.

“It is very gratifying that the IUB is awarding honorary PhD degrees to prominent personalities of the country, he said.

These views were expressed by Governor Punjab and Chancellor Engr. Muhammad Baligh ur Rahman while addressing the special convocation 2023 at the IUB.

He said that Muhammad Shafi Shakir Shuja Abadi is undoubtedly a strong reference to Seraiki language and literature and a proud asset of the South Punjab. His services to the Seraiki language and literature are worth remembering.

Governor Punjab said that Bahawalpur is a center of lush green gardens, libraries, and great educational institutions and has an important role in national development.

The educational institutions here have produced the best academicians, writers and poets, athletes and scientists who have proved their talents at the national and international level.

Among these institutions, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur is at the forefront and the role of the IUB in promoting education from Baltistan to Sindh and Balochistan has been highly commendable.

Governor Punjab said that our educational institutions are morally bound to produce educated youth who are not only endowed with technical skills but also have high personal standards.

The Governor appreciated the efforts of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Naveed Akhtar, the faculty, and their team, whose hard work is making the Islamia University of Bahawalpur a major academic hub.

In his welcome address on this occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Naveed Akhtar said that the IUB is a university of 100 years old historical identity.

Today is a day of pride for the entire university that the eminent poet of the region Muhammad Shafi Shakir Shuja Abadi and university alumni and media luminary Javed Chaudhary are being awarded honorary PhD degrees.

Former VC IUB Athar Mahboob stops from going to US

KARACHI: Former Vice Chancellor of Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) Dr. Athar Mahboob was stopped from going to America.

According to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) sources, FIA Immigration Karachi stopped Dr. Athar Mehboob from going to America.

FIA sources say that the former VC tried to go to America from Karachi airport two days ago.

Sources say that the former vice-chancellor was offloaded to investigate the Bahawalpur University scandal, the senior officers of FIA instructed to prevent the former vice-chancellor from going out of the country.

Dr. Athar Mahboob has retired on July 25 2023 as Vice Chancellor of Bahawalpur Islamia University.

Earlier, the issue of illegal activities including drugs and prohibited drugs has come to light in Islamia University Bahawalpur.

The police arrested the chief security officer of the university, Ijaz Shah, a few days ago, while the director of finance, Muhammad Abubakar, was arrested last month. Crystal ice and prohibited sex drugs were recovered from the accused.

After completing the forensics of the mobile phones of the officers, a comprehensive report regarding the videos, chats, photos of the cell phones was sent to the Chief Minister of Punjab, while the then Vice Chancellor Athar Mahboob wrote a letter to the IG Punjab and called the cases false.

Dr. Athar Mahboob said in a letter to IG Punjab that there is no illegal activity in the university.

1st Women Economic Empowerment Expo held at IUB

BAHAWALPUR: The 1st Women Economic Empowerment Expo 2023 and Symposium was held at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur(IUB).

The symposium was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Islamia University of Bahawalpur Engr Prof Dr Athar Mahboob. On this occasion, Vice Chancellor Emerson University Multan Prof Dr Muhammad Ramzan, Prof Dr Rubina Bhatti Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Additional Secretary Higher Education Department South Punjab Malik Ata-ul-Haq, Dr Abid Rasheed Gill, Chairman Department of Economics and Focal Person Dr Maryam Abbas Soharwardi addressed.

Vice Chancellor Engr Prof Dr Athar Mahboob said that the Islamia University of Bahawalpur is working for social and economic development. Pakistan’s real wealth is its workforce, whose training and upskilling will be an important step towards value edition.

Prof Dr Rubina Bhatti discussed in detail the role of academia for women’s economic independence. She said that investment and other measures for women’s economic independence are essential for gender equality, poverty eradication, and participation in decision-making and sustainable development.

Additional Secretary Higher Education Department South Punjab Malik Ata-ul-Haq said that the social independence of women will help in the elimination of gender discrimination in the society. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ramzan said that the active and practical role of women in society is inevitable and necessary for economic development.’

Dr Abid Rasheed Gill said that economic discrimination based on gender should be eliminated in Pakistani society and equal opportunities for development should be provided to them. He said that currently more than 7.5 crore women are engaged in social activities.

Dr Maryam Abbas Soharwardi said that this event has been organized purely in accordance with the vision of the university leadership to highlight the development of women and their social and economic role. She tuned women’s economic rights as human rights.

Prof Dr Shazia Anjum, Dean, Faculty of Chemical and Biological Sciences also spoke in the closing session and appreciated the organization of Women Economic Empowerment Expo and Symposium.

On this occasion, a huge exhibition was also organized for women, traders and industrialists in small and medium scale businesses in various sectors and poster competitions were also held.
