‘Kill Bill’ star Lucy Liu didn’t do a lot of research

Lucy Liu
  • Lucy Liu discusses her parenting experience.

  • She now claimed she did very little study before making the life-changing choice.

Lucy Liu, who played the femme fatale O-Ren Ishii in Quentin Tarantino’s cult masterpiece ‘Kill Bill,’ discusses her parenting experience.

Lucy Liu, who portrayed O-Ren Ishii in Quentin Tarantino’s cult film ‘Kill Bill,’ said she “didn’t have a plan” and just “pulled the trigger” when she decided to become a single mother.

The actress gave birth to a boy called Rockwell through gestational surrogacy in 2015, and she’s now claimed she did very little study before making the life-changing choice because she was afraid she’d “think” herself out of it, according to reports.

In an interview, Lucy Liu explained: “I didn’t have a plan. I just thought, ‘I want to change the conversation a little bit’. I didn’t mull it over too much. I didn’t do a lot of research, I just pulled the trigger”.

Lucy Liu said, “I can think myself out of something easily. If I think too much I won’t do it. It’s better for me to feel something and just go for it. A lot of people read books about parenting. I didn’t do any of that. I was like, ‘When the child is here, I’m just going to figure it out’.”

The 54-year-old actress then explained why she opted to raise Rockwell in her hometown of New York City, stating that she wanted him to experience more of the world.

Lucy Liu added, “I definitely wanted to raise a kid in New York. People will say, ‘It’s not convenient, you don’t even have a car,’ but this way, they’re going to see all the things. You’re going to show them what’s safe and what’s not, and they’re going to understand that through experience. It’s hard to build common sense when you’re in a car all the time. They’re going to smell the smells.”

Joe Biden responds to the failure of the Silicon Valley Bank

Joe biden
  • Joe Biden said he intended to give a speech on Monday morning to reassure Americans about the US financial system.
  • Silicon Valley Bank suddenly collapsed.
  • Becoming the largest US lender to fail in more than a decade.

US President Joe Biden promised to hold “fully accountable” those in charge of Silicon Valley Bank and another financial institution, Signature Bank, for their failure. He nevertheless made an effort to ensure Americans that their deposits are secure.

“I am firmly committed to holding those responsible for this mess fully accountable and to continuing our efforts to strengthen oversight and regulation of larger banks so that we are not in this position again,” Biden said in a statement.

The president continued, “The American people and American businesses can have confidence that their bank deposits will be there when they need them.”

After the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, Joe Biden said he intended to give a speech on Monday morning to reassure Americans about the US financial system.

“I will deliver remarks on how we will maintain a resilient banking system to protect our historic economic recovery,” he said Sunday night in a statement that also included Biden’s promise of “holding those responsible for this mess fully accountable.”

Financial institutions, including the US Treasury, declared in a combined statement that SVB depositors would have access to “all of their money” beginning on March 13th.

According to US Federal Reserve officials, the “core objective” of the actions was to reassure bank customers that they would have enough money “to meet payroll, to keep their businesses running, and to ensure households are able to pay the rent or the mortgage, or any other expenses,” on Sunday evening.

The Fed declared it would provide banks with additional funding to help them satisfy the needs of depositors, including withdrawals.

The agencies stated, “We are taking decisive actions to safeguard the US economy by enhancing public confidence in our banking system.

As of December 31, Signature Bank, a commercial bank with New York state charter and FDIC insurance, had total assets of about $110.36 billion and total deposits of about $88.59 billion, according to a second statement from the New York Department of Financial Services.

An inquiry for comment was not quickly answered by Signature Bank representatives.

After laying out a plan to raise capital, Silicon Valley Bank suddenly collapsed on Friday, becoming the largest US lender to fail in more than a decade. Due to the bank’s huge loss on the sale of its securities during a period of increasing interest rates, investors and depositors quickly started withdrawing their funds. Investors and savers attempted to withdraw $42 billion just on Thursday.

To solve the problems with the defunct Silicon Valley Bank and prevent a possible contagion from affecting other lenders, US regulators are working against the time.

Germany: shooting occurred at Jehovah’s Witness hall

Germany
  • According to reports, 6 dead and a number of people injured in shooting.
  • According to police, the gunman acted alone and is presumed dead.
  • Police discovered a dead person at the scene who they believe was a perpetrator.

A number of people were killed in a shooting at a Jehovah’s Witness meeting hall in Hamburg, Germany.

According to police, the gunman acted alone and is presumed dead. It is unclear whether the attacker is one of the six or seven people killed, as reported by German media.

As yet, “there is no reliable information on the motive”, police say.

The shooting on Deelböge street in the city’s Gross Borstel district also injured several people.

Police say they discovered a dead person at the scene who they believe was a perpetrator, and that their investigation is ongoing.

Police were called around 21:15 (20:15 GMT) to reports of shots fired in the building, according to police spokesman Holger Vehren.

Officers who went in found people who “may have been seriously injured by firearms, some of them fatally”, he said.

“The officers also heard a shot from the upper part of the building and went upstairs, where they also found a person. So far we have no indications that any perpetrators fled.”

He stated that police had not yet identified the victims and that work at the crime scene was ongoing.

“All we know is that several people have died here, several people have been injured, they have been taken to hospitals,” Mr Vehren said.

The reasons behind the shooting were “still completely unclear”.

An alert was sent on the federal warning app, NINAwarn, at around 21:00 (20:00 GMT) telling locals that “one or more unknown perpetrators shot at people in a church”.

Residents in the area were told not to leave their homes while the police operation was ongoing.

Footage showed police escorting people out of the meeting hall, some of whom were being taken to ambulances.

Andy Grote, the Interior Minister of Hamburg, announced on Twitter that police special forces and a large number of officers had been dispatched to the scene.

The police have urged the public not to make assumptions or spread rumours.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are a Christian-based religious organisation.

The denomination was founded in the United States near the end of the nineteenth century by Charles Taze Russell. The movement’s headquarters are in New York.

Adeed Fayaz, an off-duty Pakistani-American cop, was killed in a robbery

Pakistani
  • A Pakistani-American officer was shot in the head while off duty.
  • He had been hospitalized in Brooklyn for three days.
  • He was a married man with two children.

NEW YORK — A Pakistani-American officer with the New York Police Department who was shot in the head while off duty on Saturday has died, the city’s police commissioner announced Tuesday night.

Adeed Fayaz, a five-year veteran of the New York Police Department (NYPD), had been hospitalized in Brooklyn for three days following the Saturday night shooting. He was a married man with two children.

“Police Officer Adeed Fayaz was a father, a husband, a son, and a protector of our great city,” NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said. “Officer Fayaz was shot Saturday night and he tragically succumbed to his injuries today. Our department deeply mourns his passing, and his family and loved ones are in our prayers.”

Randy Jones, 38, of New York City, was arrested Monday in connection with the shooting, authorities announced at a news conference.

500 police officers of Pakistani ancestry

About 500 police officers of Pakistani ancestry work for the NYPD.

According to NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig, Fayaz had been in communication with a man selling a Honda Pilot on Facebook Marketplace for $24,000. The cop and his brother-in-law met the man on Saturday, who playfully asked if they were carrying a gun, to which both men said no, according to Essig.

“At this time, our perpetrator grabs (Fayaz) in a headlock, points the gun at his head, and demands the money,” Essig said.

When Fayaz said he didn’t have the money, the man pointed the gun at the brother-in-law, according to Essig.

“Officer Fayaz was able to break free, at which time the man fired, striking him in the head,” Essig said. “As (the suspect) flees, he continues to fire towards both the officer and his brother-in-law.”

According to Essig, the brother-in-law snatched a gun from Fayaz’s hip and fired at least six times. The assailant fled the scene in his car. Dashboard camera footage from the brother-in-vehicle law’s assisted authorities in identifying the vehicle in which the assailant fled, he added.

According to reports, the assailant lured both the officer and his brother-in-law down an alley where the shooting occurred. In the alley, there were no cameras.

Airline offloads female cancer patient for seeking help

Airline
  • A cancer patient was allegedly offloaded from an American Airlines flight.
  • Meenakshi Sengupta, lodged a complaint against the flight attendants.
  • India’s aviation authority has taken notice of the situation and requested that American Airlines submit its report.

New Delhi: A female cancer patient who had recently undergone surgery was allegedly offloaded from an American Airlines flight destined for New York at Delhi airport after she requested assistance from a flight attendant to keep her handbag in the overhead compartment.

The incident was reported on January 30, and it came to light after a traveler from the United States, identified as Meenakshi Sengupta, lodged a complaint against the flight attendants, accusing them of refusing to assist her in putting the handbag weighing more than 5 pounds in the overhead cabin because she was unable to do so due to weak limbs.

In her complaint to the Delhi Police and the Civil Air, Meenakshi Sengupta said that she had also requested wheelchair assistance to her seat, “I was also wearing a brace which was visible to everyone and they would know that I have some discomfort…because I CANNOT carry any weight in my hands at all and I’m weak from the surgery and don’t need to strain myself by walking a lot.”

“The ground crew was really sympathetic and helped me get into the plane and put my handbag on the side of the seat,” she claimed. Once on board, I spoke with the flight attendant and informed her of my medical situation… They never mentioned putting my handbag away. The cabin lights were turned off as the plane was about to take off. An air hostess arrived at that time to place my handbag in the overhead compartment. I asked her to assist me in putting it together, but she refused and said it was not her duty.”

Sengupta went on to say that she “repeatedly” asked her to help, but she was rudely denied and told to do everything on her own before walking away.

“She was extremely rude and arrogant with her words,” Sengupta alleged, adding when she went to complain about the incident the aircraft members were “largely indifferent” and told her that they did not want to interfere at all, she alleged.

“They said that if I’m so uncomfortable I should just de-board the flight. They were collective in their decision to deboard me,” Sengupta said.

The event also went viral on social media, with many pleading with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to take action.

Meanwhile, India’s aviation authority, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has taken notice of the situation and requested that American Airlines submit its report.

According to the airline’s official statement, its Customer Relations staff has contacted Sengupta to reimburse the unused portion of her ticket.

“On January 30, prior to the departure of American Airlines flight 293 from Delhi (DEL) to New York (JFK), a disruptive customer was removed from the aircraft for failure to follow crew member instructions. Our Customer Relations team has reached out to the customer to refund the unused portion of their ticket,” the airline said, adding that a probe into the matter is underway.

Northeast United States and Canada brace for ‘epic’ Arctic blast

Canada
  • The NWS of the United States cautioned about the weather severity.
  • Wind chills in portions of Maine might reach minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Maine has not seen outbreaks since 1982 and 1988.

The northeastern United States and Canada braced for an “epic” Arctic blow that might result in certain locations seeing their worst wind chill readings ever.

The National Weather Service (NWS) of the United States cautioned that wind chills in portions of Maine might reach minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 51 degrees Celsius).

“This is an epic, generational arctic outbreak,” the NWS office in Caribou, near Maine´s border with Canada, wrote in an advisory.

The chills are “something northern and eastern Maine has not seen since similar outbreaks in 1982 and 1988,” according to the report.

“Most stations are forecast to have their lowest wind chills in decades, or in some cases, ever recorded,” the organization added.

It warned that in such conditions, frostbite on exposed flesh might occur within five minutes.

“The dangers of being caught unprepared without shelter from the elements and without proper winter survival gear cannot be stressed enough,” the service wrote.

Eastern Canada

The most severe weather is expected Friday night into Saturday morning, with severe weather warnings in effect over Quebec and much of eastern Canada.

The wind chill factor in Montreal was – 41°C early Friday afternoon.

Because of the strong, cold winds, the temperature was expected to dip as low as minus 50°C in northern Quebec.

Due to strong cold winds flowing over the unfrozen water, white Arctic sea smoke ascended over areas of the St. Lawrence River.

The Hydro-Quebec power company said it was ready for a record-breaking amount of electricity use from Friday to Saturday and urged customers to cut back.

Overnight Thursday and Friday in the Canadian capital of Ottawa, a snow squall – snowfall combined with 60-70 kilometer per hour gusts — reduced visibility to near nil.

The few inhabitants who ventured out on the streets downtown bundled themselves in wool blankets atop their parkas.

Wind chill advisories were also in effect for parts of New England.

The wind chill is forecast to be minus 34°C in Boston and nearby areas, where public schools were closed Friday.

According to the NWS, New York City will have a low of minus 23°C.

Warmer air is due to move into the region early Sunday.

Actor Tom Verlaine passed away at 73

Tom Verlaine
  • He was considered one of the more skilled players to emerge from CBGBs club in New York’s Bowery.
  • The band scored three UK Top 40 hits in their heyday, but split in 1978.
  • Verlaine’s death was announced by Jesse Paris Smith.

Tom Verlaine, a guitarist who became well-known in the 1970s New York punk scene as the lead singer of the rock group Television, has passed away at the age of 73.

In their prime, Television released the albums Marquee Moon and Adventure and had three UK Top 40 smash singles.

But they found greater success in Britain than in their own America, and they broke up in 1978.

Jesse Paris Smith, the daughter of longtime friend and colleague Patti Smith, made the announcement of Verlaine’s passing.

She stated that he passed away “after a brief illness,” although she did not give a cause.

Verlaine was regarded as one of the most accomplished musicians to come out of the now-defunct CBGBs bar in New York City‘s Bowery, where they shared the stage with Talking Heads, Blondie, and The Ramones.

Although they gained notoriety as a result of the punk movement, Verlaine and fellow guitarist Richard Lloyd’s music was more complicated than that of their competitors. They frequently traded lengthy solos and intricate jazz-inspired riffs.

Verlaine, who was actually named Thomas Miller and was born in New Jersey, took the stage name Verlaine in honor of the French symbolist poet Paul Verlaine.

Following the dissolution of Television, he put out a number of solo albums, and David Bowie used a rare cover of his song Kingdom Come on his Scary Monsters album.

Television, acknowledged as a major influence on the alternative music of the 1980s and 1990s, regrouped in 1992, released a self-titled third album, and continued to perform occasionally in the years that followed.

The Waterboys’ Mike Scott tweeted in honor of Verlaine, saying: “Tom Verlaine has crossed over to the beyond that his guitar playing always hinted to.

“Like Jimi Hendrix, he was the greatest rock and roll guitarist of all time and could dance from cosmic spheres to garage rock. That requires a unique magnificence.

Echo & The Bunnymen’s guitarist Will Sergeant said: “To me, Tom Verlaine’s playing was extremely important. I would be pleased if I could play something that sounded like him. Thank you Tom, he helped me find my way as a guitarist.”
