Pakistan seeks UN intervention to save Indi’s Islamic sites

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has drawn United Nations’ attention to last week’s “brazen” demolition of the centuries-old Akhonji mosque in New Delhi, and call for the organization’s intervention to protect Islamic sites in India.

“This incident marks another highly disturbing chapter in an alarming campaign targeting Islamic sites and heritage in India, which symbolizes a concerning rise in Hindu-majoritarianism,” Ambassador Munir Akram said in a letter addressed to the top official for the U.N. Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), Miguel Angel Moratinos.

The Akhonji mosque, standing for over 800 years, was abruptly demolished by Delhi Development Authority (DDA) officials in the middle of the night under a significant police presence, catching the local community, mosque-goers, and Madressah students entirely off guard without any prior warning, the Pakistani envoy pointed out.

The letter said: “Several mosques and shrines, have already been razed under the garb of different administrative measures or judicial processes, and many more remain at a high risk of being demolished. Muslim holy sites also remain a target of attacks by the mobs of extremists.

“The State’s support for normalizing such incidents in India poses imminent threats to the well-being of Indian Muslims across social, economic, and political spheres. The pervasive influence of the ‘Hindutva’ ideology, alongside alarming incidents of Islamophobia and the demolition of historic mosques, calls for immediate and unwavering international attention.

In a video surfaced online, Imam Zakir Hussain, the spiritual leader of the Akhonji mosque, conveyed deep sorrow for the loss. He emphasized its crucial dual role as both a place of worship and a Madressah for students, as well as housing the sacred resting place of revered figures.

“The construction and consecration of the ‘Ram Temple’ at the site of the demolished Babri Mosque in Ayodhya, followed by the recent incident at the Akhonji mosque, underlines the critical need for the swift implementation of the Secretary-General’s Action Plan on the Protection of Religious Sites.

“We request you to accelerate efforts to address this urgent matter, ensuring the safeguarding of religious sites in India.

Indian Foreign minister lashes out at critics following the BBC raids

Indian Foreign minister
  • India’s foreign minister lashed out on Saturday.
  • Jaishankar supported the prime minister, labeling critics as “scaremongers.”
  • The BBC’s offices in New Delhi and Mumbai were raided by Indian tax authorities.

SYDNEY: India’s foreign minister lashed out on Saturday at “scaremongering” opponents who believe the country’s democracy is deteriorating, singling out billionaire George Soros, a frequent target for right-wing ire.

S. Jaishankar denied at a Sydney event that frequent raids on the BBC’s India headquarters demonstrated Prime Leader Narendra Modi and his government were moving towards dictatorship.

Jaishankar supported the prime minister, labeling critics as “scaremongers,” with a “Euro-Atlantic view” of democracy that fails to respect the Indian people’s democratic decision.

“There are still people in the world who believe that their definition, their preferences, their views must override everything else,” he said.

The BBC‘s offices in New Delhi and Mumbai were raided by Indian tax authorities just weeks after the channel aired a documentary about Modi’s involvement during deadly sectarian rioting in 2002.

Modi “is no democrat”

Jaishankar singled out benefactor Soros, who recently highlighted Modi’s tight relationships with fraud-accused enterprises operated by buddy Gautam Adani and stated that while India was a democracy, Modi “is no democrat”.

Jaishankar denounced the 92-year-old Hungarian-born financier as “old, rich opinionated, and dangerous” and someone who “still thinks that his views should determine how the entire world works.”

“He actually thinks that it doesn’t matter that this is a country of 1.4 billion people — we are almost that — whose voters decide how the country should run.”

Soros has long financed organizations advocating openness and democracy, which has led to numerous conspiracy theories and politically driven attacks on him.

“People like him believe that elections are beneficial if the person we wish to see elected wins. If the election results in a different way, we will truly claim that democracy is defective “According to Jaishankar.

Press freedom in the world’s biggest democracy has suffered during Modi’s tenure, rights activists say, and the opposition Congress party condemned the raids, saying there was an “undeclared emergency” in the country.

A spokesman for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the broadcaster of engaging in “anti-India propaganda” but said the raids were lawful and the timing had nothing to do with the government.

Indian tax authorities check BBC staff’ mobile phones and laptop computers

tax
  • Indian tax inspectors checked mobile phones and laptops used by some BBC employees.
  • Tax officers had remained in the BBC’s headquarters since Tuesday.
  • The tax department’s move came just weeks after the government responded sharply to a BBC documentary.

New Delhi: According to two sources, Indian tax inspectors checked mobile phones and laptops used by some BBC editorial and administrative employees on Thursday, as an investigation of the British broadcaster’s offices in New Delhi and Mumbai began its third day.

According to witnesses, tax officers had remained in the BBC’s headquarters, some sleeping there, since the surprise inspection began on Tuesday. Others said that some employees were questioned about financial activities late at night.

“They (officials) asked some of us to open their laptops and hand in phones and then handed them back,” one source told Reuters, adding that owners of the devices were asked for the access codes. A second source gave a similar account.

The tax department’s move came just weeks after the government responded sharply to a BBC documentary that raised doubts about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in the fatal sectarian riots in Gujarat in 2002 when he was the state’s chief minister.

The government dismissed the documentary, “India: The Modi Question“, as propaganda and blocked its streaming and sharing on social media.

The BBC has stood by its reporting, which looked into one of India’s worst outbreaks of religious violence in modern times. At least 1,000 people, predominantly Muslims, were slain in the bloodbath, however, campaigners believe the death toll is much higher.

The BBC has said that it was “fully cooperating” with the tax authorities, and an internal memo from BBC World Service director Liliane Landor instructed staff to answer questions honestly and “not delete or conceal any information on any of your devices.”

The tax department has not issued any statement or responded to requests for comment, though a government official denied that the tax survey was “vindictive”, saying it was related to transfer pricing rules and alleged diversion of profits.

Kanchan Gupta, a senior adviser at the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, told Times Now news channel on Wednesday that the BBC was served tax notices in the past but had not provided a “convincing response.”

Some foreign corporations have come under income tax scrutiny in recent years due to transfer pricing restrictions, but some media organizations and rights groups have criticized the BBC’s continued to probe.

“We demand that this intimidation be stopped and journalists are left to do their jobs without fear or favor,” the Mumbai Press Club said in a statement.

Russia has supplied India with weapons worth $13 billion in last five years

Russia
  • Russia has supplied India with around $13 billion in weaponry.
  • Military equipment worth more than $10 billion.
  • India is the world’s largest importer of Russian weaponry.

Russian state news media reported late on Sunday that Russia has supplied India with around $13 billion in weaponry over the last five years, and that New Delhi has placed orders with Moscow for weapons and military equipment worth more than $10 billion.

India is the world’s largest importer of Russian weaponry, accounting for roughly 20% of Moscow’s current order book, and the Indian government has not openly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed for talks and diplomacy to end the 12-month conflict.

In response to the invasion, which Moscow describes as a “special military operation,” dozens of Western countries placed sanctions on Russia, including penalties on weaponry.

According to Dmitry Shugayev, the head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, India, China, and several Southeast Asian countries have retained their interest in purchasing Russian armaments.

Russia’s main partners

“Despite the unprecedented pressure on India from Western countries led by the United States in connection with Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, it continues to be one of Russia’s main partners in the field of military-technical cooperation,” Interfax agency quoted Shugayev as saying.

According to Interfax, annual arms shipments were around $14-15 billion, while the order book has remained stable at roughly $50 billion.

Shugayev stated that Asian buyers are particularly interested in Russia’s S-400 Triumf missile defense systems, short-range surface-to-air missile systems such as the Osa, Pechora, or Strela, as well as Su-30 aircraft, MiG-29 helicopters, and drones.

According to the Russian state news agency TASS, Russia will display over 200 samples of armaments and military equipment at the 14th international aerospace show Aero India 2023, which begins on Monday in Bengaluru.

At the show this week, India is looking for military planes worth billions of dollars, finalizing jetliner deals to suit civilian demand, and pressuring global aviation makers to build more locally.

Airline offloads female cancer patient for seeking help

Airline
  • A cancer patient was allegedly offloaded from an American Airlines flight.
  • Meenakshi Sengupta, lodged a complaint against the flight attendants.
  • India’s aviation authority has taken notice of the situation and requested that American Airlines submit its report.

New Delhi: A female cancer patient who had recently undergone surgery was allegedly offloaded from an American Airlines flight destined for New York at Delhi airport after she requested assistance from a flight attendant to keep her handbag in the overhead compartment.

The incident was reported on January 30, and it came to light after a traveler from the United States, identified as Meenakshi Sengupta, lodged a complaint against the flight attendants, accusing them of refusing to assist her in putting the handbag weighing more than 5 pounds in the overhead cabin because she was unable to do so due to weak limbs.

In her complaint to the Delhi Police and the Civil Air, Meenakshi Sengupta said that she had also requested wheelchair assistance to her seat, “I was also wearing a brace which was visible to everyone and they would know that I have some discomfort…because I CANNOT carry any weight in my hands at all and I’m weak from the surgery and don’t need to strain myself by walking a lot.”

“The ground crew was really sympathetic and helped me get into the plane and put my handbag on the side of the seat,” she claimed. Once on board, I spoke with the flight attendant and informed her of my medical situation… They never mentioned putting my handbag away. The cabin lights were turned off as the plane was about to take off. An air hostess arrived at that time to place my handbag in the overhead compartment. I asked her to assist me in putting it together, but she refused and said it was not her duty.”

Sengupta went on to say that she “repeatedly” asked her to help, but she was rudely denied and told to do everything on her own before walking away.

“She was extremely rude and arrogant with her words,” Sengupta alleged, adding when she went to complain about the incident the aircraft members were “largely indifferent” and told her that they did not want to interfere at all, she alleged.

“They said that if I’m so uncomfortable I should just de-board the flight. They were collective in their decision to deboard me,” Sengupta said.

The event also went viral on social media, with many pleading with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to take action.

Meanwhile, India’s aviation authority, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has taken notice of the situation and requested that American Airlines submit its report.

According to the airline’s official statement, its Customer Relations staff has contacted Sengupta to reimburse the unused portion of her ticket.

“On January 30, prior to the departure of American Airlines flight 293 from Delhi (DEL) to New York (JFK), a disruptive customer was removed from the aircraft for failure to follow crew member instructions. Our Customer Relations team has reached out to the customer to refund the unused portion of their ticket,” the airline said, adding that a probe into the matter is underway.

Indian police detain students for screening BBC Modi documentary

Indian police
  • Delhi University students had joined students.
  • Student groups loyal to Modi’s ruling party objected to the screening.
  • 24 students had been detained.

NEW DELHI: Indian police detained students in New Delhi on Friday after a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in 2002 sectarian riots was halted.

Delhi University students had joined students from other campuses across the country in staging a broadcast, defying government efforts to halt its spread by blocking its publication on social media.

Police swarmed the university after student groups loyal to Modi‘s ruling party objected to the screening, seizing laptops and prohibiting assemblies of more than four people.

Police officer Sagar Singh Kalsi told the Indian news channel that 24 students had been detained.

According to the two-part BBC documentary, Modi ordered police to turn a blind eye to deadly riots while he was chief minister of Gujarat state.

The unrest began after 59 Hindu pilgrims were killed in a train fire. Thirty-one Muslims were found guilty of criminal conspiracy and murder in connection with that incident.

In the ensuing unrest, at least 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed.

Politically motivated

The documentary quoted a previously classified British foreign ministry report which said the violence was “politically motivated” and the aim “was to purge Muslims from Hindu areas”.

According to the report, the riots would not have been possible “without the climate of impunity” created by Modi’s administration.

Under controversial information technology laws, India has dismissed the series as “hostile” propaganda and ordered major social media platforms such as Twitter and YouTube to prohibit sharing or streaming it.

Authorities at New Delhi’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University also banned an attempted screening earlier this week, threatening “strict disciplinary action” if the edict was disobeyed.

Defiant groups of students have gathered on college campuses across India to watch the documentary on laptop and phone screens.

Modi ruled Gujarat from 2001 until his election as Prime Minister in 2014, and he was briefly barred from entering the country due to the violence.

An investigation team appointed by the Indian Supreme Court to look into Modi’s and others’ roles in the violence concluded in 2012 that there was insufficient evidence to charge him.

Air India to appeal against DGCA’s decision of suspending commander’s license

Indian flight enroute London faces bomb threat, contacts ATC Karachi
  • Air India concluded its internal investigation.
  • The complainant approached the crew for assistance after allegedly being urinated on by a fellow passenger.
  • The ground staff did not challenge the crew’s assessment.

New Delhi: Air India said on Tuesday that, given the mitigating circumstances and financial loss incurred by the crew during their period of de-rostering as a result of the peeing case, it considers the Commander’s license suspension “excessive” and will assist him in filing an appeal.

On November 26, 2022, Air India concluded its internal investigation into the actions of its crew operating and administrative staff supporting AI102.

The airline stated that the complainant approached the crew for assistance after allegedly being urinated on by a fellow passenger.

“In the absence of any witnesses, the crew took the complainant’s allegation at face value and assisted her by providing fresh clothes, helping clean her belongings, and relocating her to another business class seat of the same type as her original one,” said the airline.

According to Air India, the alleged perpetrator posed no risk to flight safety at any time in the crew’s opinion. “When awoken and confronted with the allegation, the alleged perpetrator was calm, cooperative, and claimed ignorance of the allegation. He had not been served excessive amounts of alcohol by the crew and did not appear to be intoxicated to them. The cabin crew kept the Commander informed on a regular basis. The alleged perpetrator, in the opinion of the crew, posed no risk to flight safety at any time,” it said.

Acknowledgment

Air India admitted that by taking the complainant’s accusation at face value and immediately providing assistance, the matter should have been reported as a prima facie case of a passenger “behaving in a disorderly manner toward other passengers” and thus meeting the description of unruly behavior at paragraph 4.9(d)(ii) of Civil Aviation Requirements, Section 3, Series M, Part VI (theACAR).

According to the airline, the incident should have been classified and reported as such, without prejudice to any subsequent investigation into the facts.

According to the airline, upon receiving the voyage report, ground staff did not challenge the crew’s assessment and, as a result, did not report the incident as an unruly incident.

“Based on the absence of witnesses to the alleged act, that the alleged perpetrator was peaceful, cooperative, and claiming ignorance of the event, that there was no risk to flight safety, and that a resolution had been witnessed between the parties, the crew made a judgment call to record the matter as a (non-reportable) inflight incident rather than a (reportable) case of unruliness. It should also be noted that, in the absence of witnesses to the alleged act, the crew was asked to make a presumption of the accused’s guilt, which violates natural justice and due process,” said Air India.

India: Air India fined for passenger’s mid-flight urination

Air India
  •  Air India is fined $37,000 for not handling incidents professionally.
  • The man allegedly relieved himself on the 72-year-old woman.
  • The man was allowed to disembark as usual, and no immediate action was taken.

NEW DELHI: Indian media reported that Air India was fined $ 37,000 for its handling of an incident in which a drunk senior US bank executive was accused of urinating on a female passenger.

On a November 26 flight from New York to New Delhi, the man allegedly relieved himself on the 72-year-old woman seated in business class, an incident dubbed “peegate” by the media.

According to reports on Friday and Saturday, the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation fined Air India’s director of in-flight services 300,000 rupees in addition to the carrier’s penalty of three million rupees ($37,000).

The pilot’s license was also suspended for three months for “failing to discharge his duties.”

The banker, Indian national Shankar Mishra, was allowed to disembark as usual. No immediate action was taken.

After the story was widely publicized in Indian media, police arrested Mishra.

US bank Wells Fargo fired him from his job as vice president of its Indian operations after the “deeply disturbing” allegations.

Air India was heavily chastised for how it handled the woman’s complaint.  The airline’s CEO was forced to issue an apology.

“Air India acknowledges that it could have handled these matters better, both in the air and on the ground, and is committed to taking action,” chief executive Campbell Wilson said.

The case is the latest embarrassing incident to be reported in India’s booming airline sector in recent months.

New Delhi: Flight departs ahead of schedule, Leaving 35 behind

New Delhi
  • The Singapore-bound flight took off leaving 35 passengers behind.
  • Airline officials claimed that the passengers had been notified of the change via email.
  • Passengers who were left behind protested at the airport.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in New Delhi has ordered an investigation into how a Singapore-bound flight took off hours ahead of schedule, leaving 35 passengers behind at the Amritsar airport.

The investigation was launched by the aviation regulatory authority after a Scoot Airline flight scheduled to depart from Amritsar Airport at 7.55 p.m. on Wednesday took off at 3 p.m., hours ahead of schedule.

This caused chaos at the airport, with angry passengers who were left behind protesting. They filed a complaint with the airport’s appropriate authorities.

When airport officials contacted airline officials, they were informed that the passengers had been notified of the change in flight time via e-mail.

“Around 280 passengers were to travel to Singapore but 253 passengers were rescheduled, leaving behind over 30 passengers,” Amritsar airport Directors told.

India reactivates network of village guards in occupied Kashmir

Network
  • India is reviving a network of thousands of village guards in IOK.
  • Militants murdered seven members of a Hindu community in a rural village.
  • Delhi accuses Pakistan of inciting bloodshed there; Islamabad disproves this claim.

Srinagar – A police official stated that following a militant strike in the disputed area earlier in January that left seven civilians dead, India is reviving a network of thousands of village guards in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and arming some of them with automatic rifles.

New Delhi has fought a decades-long armed insurgency in Kashmir and accuses its archrival Pakistan of inciting bloodshed there; Islamabad disproves this claim.

After militants murdered seven members of a Hindu community in a rural village in Jammu’s Rajouri district on January 1, authorities reactivated a mostly inactive network of 26,000 Village Defence Guards (VDGs).

“We are re-grouping and rejuvenating the VDGs who were already there,” local police chief Haseeb Mughal told Reuters.

“There was slackness after years of normalcy in the region and now we are training and reorganizing them to prevent any such attacks. We have also provided automatic rifles to some.”

A VDG from Jammu’s Doda neighborhood named Basant Raj Thakur stated that he agreed with the decision to replace some guards’ existing bolt-action rifles with automatic guns.

“The way the situation is developing they should provide more such weapons and training,” Thakur said.

Former IOK’s chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said, “Placing weapons in the hands of locals of border districts in Jammu region contradicts the government’s claims of normalcy.
