More than 1.8m in war-shattered Gaza face extreme hunger, UN study

UN reports Gaza holds world's highest rate of child amputees per capita

UNITED NATIONS: More than 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza are experiencing “extremely critical” levels of hunger, with 70 per cent of crop fields destroyed and livelihoods decimated during the ongoing Israeli military offensive, a UN-backed food security assessment released .

Figures from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) system show that 133,000 people – or 6 per cent of the enclave’s population – are already experiencing Phase 5 or “catastrophic” food insecurity.

It’s feared this number could rise to around 345,000 people – or 16 per cent of the entire population – between the winter months of November and April next year.

“The risk of famine persists across the whole Gaza Strip. Given the recent surge in hostilities, there are growing concerns that this worst-case scenario may materialize,” the assessment noted.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is alarmed by the IPC report’s findings amid high displacement and restrictions on humanitarian aid flows, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters during Thursday’s regular news briefing in New York.

“One year into the conflict, famine looms. This is intolerable.”

The Secretary-General is also calling on Israel to immediately reopen all crossing points, Farhan Haq added.

In addition, bureaucratic impediments must be removed, and law and order must be restored inside Gaza so that UN agencies can deliver lifesaving humanitarian assistance, Mr Haq emphasized.

The IPC assessment also stressed that only through widespread access to adequate food, medical supplies, water, and basic services across the Gaza Strip, can the risk of a rapid descent into famine be contained.

It calls for an immediate, unconditional and sustained ceasefire, restoration of food systems, and better prevention and management of rising and acute malnutrition.

Blanket supplementary feeding programmes and infant and young child feeding programmes need to be bolstered, including promotion of breastfeeding and care for non-breastfed infants.

UN agencies for their part continue their efforts to assist all Gazans despite severe challenges, including insecurity, access difficulty, and ongoing evacuation orders and fighting.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), for instance, has prioritised reactivating local food production and restoring the availability of highly nutritious food, especially as the winter season approaches. Even prior to the war, winters in Gaza saw spikes in hunger and malnutrition.

Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, at her weekly press briefing, expressed solidarity with the Kashmiri families that remained divided and continued to suffer due to Indian oppression for the last several decades.

“The estimates of widowed women and orphaned children exceed 22,000 and 107,000 respectivelyThousands of half-widows are awaiting the return of their husbands who have presumably been killed by Indian forces.

The plight of the families of the victims of enforced disappearance is equally lamentable,” the spokesperson remarked, referring to the annual International Day of Families observed on May 15.

President, PM pay tribute to brave struggle of Kashmiris

Kashmir

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi and Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar said that the right to self-determination is a cardinal principle of international law but regrettably, the Kashmiri people have not been able to exercise this inalienable right.

“The UN General Assembly annually adopts a resolution expressing unequivocal support for the realization of the right to self-determination for people under foreign occupation,” the president said in a message on the occasion of Kashmir Solidarity Day being observed on February 5.

He said the people of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) had been struggling to realise their right to self-determination for the last seventy-six years.

“Today, IIOJK is one of the most militarized zones in the world. Kashmiris are living in an environment of fear and intimidation,” President Secretariat Press Wing, in a press release, quoted the president as saying.

The president reiterated that on the Kashmir Solidarity Day, the government and people of Pakistan renewed their unflinching support for their just and legitimate struggle.

On the other hand, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has said that India’s illegal and unilateral actions of 5 August 2019 in IIOJK were a blatant violation of international law including the UN Charter, 4th Geneva Convention and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

“India has since been engaged in efforts to further entrench these illegal measures through a series of steps aimed at altering the demographic structure and political landscape of IIOJK,” the prime minister said in a message on the observance of Kashmir Solidarity Day on February 5.

He said that the ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’ was annually observed on the 5th February to express Pakistan’s unwavering support to the Kashmiri people’s just struggle for realization of their right to self-determination.

It was also an occasion to pay rich tribute to the sacrifices made by their Kashmiri brothers and sisters during the last seventy-six years, he added.

Pakistan calls for implementation of ICJ judgment on Gaza

Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan called for the full implementation of the International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s provisional judgment on Gaza requiring an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, urging the UN Security Council to play its mandated role for the purpose.

“Pakistan also calls for the full implementation of ICJ’s provisional judgment to uphold human rights, dignity, and identity of the Palestinian people as per the UN Charter, relevant resolutions, and international law.

The implementation of these provisional measures requires an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to bring about an end to the suffering faced by the people of Gaza,” Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said in her weekly press briefing.

Expressing deep concerns about the ongoing oppression of Palestinian people, she strongly condemned the Israeli attack inside the Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin which she said fell in the category of war crimes being perpetrated against the Palestinian people.

“These ongoing atrocities go against the spirit of the provisional measures decided by the International Court of Justice to protect the people of Gaza,” she remarked.

Besides, she said the suspension of funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) also went against the spirit of the ICJ’s provisional measures. We urge reconsideration of the decision to suspend funding of UNRWA which has a crucial role in protecting and supporting the Palestinian people, she remarked.

She told the newsmen that on February 5, the government and people of Pakistan would observe the Kashmir Solidarity Day to reaffirm their solidarity with the Kashmiri people in their just struggle for realization of their inalienable right to self-determination.

Highlighting the diplomatic engagements taken place during the last week, Spokesperson Baloch mentioned the ongoing visit of Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani to Brussels to attend the Third EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum.

She also recalled the visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on January 29, who held in-depth meetings with FM Jilani and met with Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar and the Chief of Army Staff.

Kashmiris mark Indian Republic Day as Black Day

Kashmiris

MIRPUR-AJK: Kashmiris living on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) observed Indian Republic Day on Friday (today) as Black Day, echoing their complete dissociation and intense hatred towards India.

According to AJK spokesperson, the Day served as a reminder to the world of the urgent need for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue, in line with the aspirations of the people and international norms and commitments, including UN resolutions on Kashmir.

Amidst anti-India slogans, mass rallies were held on both sides of the LoC, denouncing Indian subjugation and human rights abuses in the disputed region. This year’s Black Day carries even more significance, as it falls amidst the hardline Modi-led government’s revocation of Articles 370 and 35-A, turning the occupied valley into the largest prison for over four years.

The observance of Black Day also aimed to raise awareness about India’s continual denial of Kashmiris’ right to self-determination and their struggle for freedom.
