LAHORE: The caretaker Punjab government has issued instructions to all the deputy commissioners(DCs) to start a crackdown on polluters for controlling smog.

The instructions were issued by Chief Secretary Punjab Zahid Akhtar Zaman while presiding over a meeting held at the Civil Secretariat. The Senior Member Board of Revenue and secretaries of departments concerned attended the meeting while all divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners participated through video link.

The Chief Secretary ordered that stern action should be taken against stubble burning, the industries and vehicles causing air pollution and special anti-smog squads be formed in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, and Sialkot. He said that preventive measures are indispensable to overcome the smog, adding that the responsibilities would be reassigned to the departments.

The Chief Secretary mentioned that all the departments should make collective efforts to control smog. The task of controlling environmental pollution is a service to humanity, he added. The Chief Secretary also asked the deputy commissioners to ensure construction of new washrooms for passengers at petrol pumps situated at highways.

LAHORE: Smog has continued to affect the air of Lahore and other parts of Punjab as  city once again ranked fourth among the most polluted cities in the world while Karachi stands sixth.

According to the details, smog has once again set up camp in Lahore. The highest air quality index rate was recorded on Ferozepur Road.

According to the report of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the average air quality index of the city has been recorded as 204.

The air quality index rate of 330 has been recorded in the FC College area of ​​Lahore, but currently, the highest air quality index rate is 446 in the vicinity of Ferozepur Road. The pollution rate in the defence area is 246 and 394 in the Shimla hills.

According to the classification, pollution from 151 to 200 levels is harmful to health, while pollution from 201 to 300 levels is counted as extremely harmful to health.

Keep in mind that levels above 301 indicate hazardous pollution and health experts have advised respiratory and asthma patients to be cautious.

Smog is an air pollution that is formed by the emission of harmful gases in the air and the combination of dust particles in the air.

It is a type of air pollution also known as photochemical smog and is produced when other toxic particles such as nitrogen oxides react with sunlight.

Smog has very dangerous effects on human health, with symptoms such as cold, cough, sore throat, breathing problems, and eye irritation, affecting people of all ages.
