Madagascar solar company receives financing to connect 50,000 homes

Madagascar
  • They aim at 90% of the country’s rural population that lacks access to electricity.
  • Off-grid solar power can economically supply clean energy.
  • WeLight enables consumers to prepay for their electricity through mobile banking.

WeLight, an off-grid solar firm based in Madagascar, announced on Tuesday that it has received 19 million euros ($20.57 million) to power 50,000 homes over the next two years.

Off-grid solar power, promoted by several start-ups, has grown in popularity in Africa because it can economically supply clean energy to millions of homes that are not connected to traditional electricity grids.

WeLight, which enables consumers to prepay for their electricity through mobile banking, is aimed at the 90% of the country’s rural population that lacks access to electricity, according to the company.

The European Investment Bank (EBI), EDFI ElectriFI, and Triodos Investment Management are providing funding for the project. In a joint statement, WeLight stated.

Axian Group of Madagascar, Norfund, and Sagemcom own the solar energy company WeLight, which already supplies 9,000 rural Malagasy families with electricity.

The company claimed it tested five mini-grids in Mali in 2021 and is looking into the potential in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Madagascar has a population of 29 million.

The most recent Madagascar expansion will include 120 new settlements and will cost a total of 27 million euros thanks to additional funding supplied in the form of loans from shareholders.

According to Maud Watelet, a senior investment officer of EDFI, one of the financiers, the fresh round of funding will assist the company in continuing to grow its activities.

Meghan Markle warned not to visit Africa after ‘offensive’ statement

Meghan Markle
  • Meghan Markle described her son’s nursery catching fire during her Africa trip.
  • South Africans were outraged by her apparent disparagement of the country’s insufficient security.
  • One critic even urged her to never return to South Africa again.

Meghan Markle was attacked by South Africans online after recalling her son Archie’s nursery catching fire during her visit, with one critic even urging her not to return, according to Report.

The Duchess of Sussex debuted her Archetypes podcast earlier this week, discussing ‘ambitions’ with Serena Williams as a guest. During the presentation, she described how their ‘housing unit’ in Africa caught fire while Harry and her were attending to royal obligations.

“There was no smoke detector. Someone happened to just smell smoke down the hallway went in, fire extinguished,” Meghan had revealed.

South Africans, however, were outraged by Meghan’s apparent disparagement of the country’s insufficient security, as well as her reference to her apartment as a “housing unit.”

Lulama Anderson, presenter of The Snaymaan Podcast, was also critical, tweeting, “Meghan Markle doesn’t care how she portrays South Africa, she must never step foot here ever again.”

He also stated, “Optics will suggest that South Africa is not safe…”

Prince William Mourns Park Ranger Who Was Murdered in South Africa: ‘I’m Deeply Saddened’

Prince William
  • The Duke of Cambridge mourns the murder of Anton Mzimba, a South African park ranger.
  • Prince William and Kate Middleton posted a note about him on their Twitter account.
  • The royal has strong ties with the Timbavati Nature Reserve in South Africa.

The murder of a South African park ranger with whom Prince William spoke last year “deeply saddened” Prince William.

The Duke of Cambridge mourned Anton Mzimba, a head ranger at the Timbavati Nature Reserve, in a personal message posted to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s official Twitter account on Wednesday.

“I’m deeply saddened to learn of Anton Mzimba’s murder, with whom I spoke in November,” William wrote. “Rangers like Anton, who are dedicated and brave, are critical to the conservation of Africa’s incredible wildlife. Those responsible must be brought to justice as soon as possible. My heart goes out to his family.” He signed the note with a “W” to show that the message came from him.

The organisation Helping Rhinos shared a photo of Mzimba, who they said was shot and killed outside his home on Tuesday.

“This comes in the wake of recent death threats and highlights the daily threat that Rangers face,” the organisation wrote on Twitter.

Mzimba’s death was also mourned on social media by Timbavati Nature Reserve, which wrote: “Anton, you have left a legacy that we will cherish and never forget in your honour.

Mr. Anton Mzimba, Head of Ranger Services, who dedicated 25 years of his life to the Timbavati, has died. A true story about a wildlife warrior.”

Last fall, Prince William spoke with Mzimba via video chat while visiting Microsoft’s offices in Reading to learn about a new device to combat ivory smugglers.

According to what the park ranger told William, “This is a highly organised crime. Local residents are involved. However, it eventually crosses the country’s border.”

Prince William is involved with a number of organisations that promote the abolition of illegal wildlife trafficking and the protection of endangered species in Africa, where the royal has strong ties.

“I first fell in love with Africa as a teenager when I spent time in Kenya, Botswana, and Tanzania,” he said at a Royal African Society reception in September 2018. “I was captivated and have wanted to return as often as possible since.”
