Burkina Faso demands French troops to leave the country

French troops
  • French troops are ordered to leave within a month.
  • The decision is taken due to the latest sign of France’s deteriorating relations.
  • Paris has not responded.

The military government of Burkina Faso has ordered French troops stationed in the West African country to leave within a month.

The decision, announced on Saturday by the official Agence d’Information du Burkina (AIB), is the latest sign of France’s deteriorating relations with its former colony since a second military coup in September of last year.

According to the AIB, the military government suspended a 2018 military agreement that allowed French troops to remain in the country on Wednesday.

Paris did not respond immediately.

A source close to the Burkinabe military told the news agency that Ouagadougou was not severing relations with France and that the “notification only concerns military cooperation agreements”.

France has 400 special forces soldiers stationed in Burkina Faso, where they are fighting al-Qaeda and ISIL affiliates (ISIS).

In recent months, anti-French sentiment in the country has risen as a result of perceptions that France’s military presence has not improved security.

On Friday, hundreds of Burkinabes marched into the capital, Ouagadougou, demanding the expulsion of the French envoy and the closure of the French military base in Burkina Faso.

They carried massive posters of Mali and Guinean leaders, both of whom came to power through coups, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mali, another former French colony, ordered the withdrawal of French troops last year.

After nine years of fighting al-Qaeda and ISIL-affiliated groups, the last of the 2,400 French troops stationed there left in August.

Many of them have relocated to Niger and Chad.

Mali has now hired Wagner Group Russian mercenaries, who have been accused of widespread human rights violations in the country and elsewhere.

West African bloc studies sanctions for coup-hit states

West African
  • ECOWAS heads meet to assess efforts to secure timetables for civilian rule in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso.
  • The juntas underwent coups in August 2020 and May 2021, followed by Guinea in September 2021.The
  • Economic Community of West African States imposed tough sanctions against Mali, but lesser punishments against Guinea and Burkina.

West African leaders gathered in Ghana’s capital Accra on Sunday to review sanctions imposed on three military-ruled countries in their volatile region.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) heads were meeting to assess efforts to secure timetables and other guarantees for the restoration of civilian rule in Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso.

Mali underwent coups in August 2020 and May 2021, followed by Guinea in September 2021 and Burkina Faso this January.

Fearing contagion in a region notorious for military takeovers, ECOWAS has imposed tough trade and economic sanctions against Mali, but lesser punishments against Guinea and Burkina.

Dominating the summit will be the review of a month-long bid to push the juntas to set an early timetable for returning to barracks.

ECOWAS in January imposed a trade and financial embargo on Mali after its military government unveiled a scheme to rule for five years.

At a June 4 summit, no decision was made for the three countries.

Opening Sunday’s summit, Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo said the 15-member bloc was committed to supporting the three countries’ return to democratic order and would take appropriate decisions after hearing reports on their progress.

The sanctions have badly hit poor and landlocked Mali, whose economy is already under severe strain from a decade-long jihadist insurgency.

After months of bitter talks, the Malian authorities on Wednesday approved a plan to hold presidential elections in February 2024.

The vote will be preceded by a referendum on a revised constitution in March 2023 and legislative elections in late 2023.

The ECOWAS mediator in Mali, former Nigerian leader Goodluck Jonathan, visited the country last week. A member of his entourage told AFP Mali had made “enormous progress”.

Mali’s top diplomat Abdoulaye Diop on Friday said the recent political developments were moving the country towards a lifting of the sanctions.

But a new electoral law, adopted on June 17, could be a stumbling block in the talks as it allows a military figure to contest the presidential elections.

Burkina Faso — another Sahel country caught up in jihadist turmoil — and Guinea have so far only been suspended from the bodies of the 15-nation bloc but could face harsher sanctions.

Burkina’s junta has proposed a constitutional referendum in December 2024 and legislative and presidential elections in February 2025.

Visiting Ouagadougou for the second time in a month on Saturday, ECOWAS mediator Mahamadou Issoufou praised junta leader Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba and his government for their “openness to dialogue”.

US warns of Militants and Russian forces as Africa war games end

Russian forces
  • The Sahel region is a vast territory stretching across the south of Africa’s Sahara Desert.
  • It includes countries such as Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.
  • More than 7,500 personnel from a dozen countries took part in the “African Lion” exercises.

The top US general for Africa has warned of “violent extremism” and the threat of Russian mercenaries in the Sahel region, speaking as war games in Morocco came to a close.

“We are seeing an increase in violent extremism in Western Africa, particularly in the Sahel region,” said US Africa Command commander General Stephen J. Townsend (AFRICOM).

The Sahel region is a vast territory stretching across the south of Africa’s Sahara Desert, incorporating countries such as Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.

“We are seeing the arrival of malign actors, and specifically I am thinking of Russian mercenaries from Wagner,” Townsend told AFP in the North African nation on Thursday, at the conclusion of a four-week long “African Lion” international military exercise.

“This training is not specifically oriented on those problems, but it will help all of our armed forces if we are called to combat this kind of problem in the future,” Townsend said.

Islamic State-linked jihadists, whose power was once thought to be waning in the Sahel, have recently expanded their reach and marking their presence with an unprecedented series of civilian massacres.

Mali has been especially hard hit, a former French colony where the strategic landscape has changed dramatically following two coups in August 2020 and May 2021.

Bamako developed closer ties with Moscow, bringing in military personnel that France says are mercenaries from Russia’s Wagner group.

AFRICOM, which is based in the German city of Stuttgart, is responsible for US military operations across Africa.

Media watchdog CPJ louds over Burkina journalist

Burkina journalist
  • A prominent Burkina Faso journalist has received death threats, the Committee to Protect Journalists.
  • Ahmed Newton Barry was targeted in an audio clip circulating among WhatsApp groups.
  • The threat may be related to comments he made on a TV programme, Barry told the CPJ.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged Burkina Faso authorities to intervene after one of the country’s most prominent journalists received death threats.

According to the watchdog, Ahmed Newton Barry, a former TV president and ex-editor of L’Evenement newspaper who now works as a current affairs commentator, was targeted in an audio clip circulating among WhatsApp groups.

The speaker in the clip identifies Barry by name, describes him as a “terrorist” and says a hundred people would assault his home.

“We are going to set fire to it and then destroy everything and collect the rubble that is piled up and leave the ground vacant,” the clip says, according to the CPJ.

Barry told the CPJ the threat may be related to comments he made on a TV programme in which he described the Malian government as working with Russian mercenaries.
