Ukraine: More Dnipro strike survivors are unlikely, says the mayor

Dnipro
  • The deadly Dnipro strike impacted the entrance of a nine-story structure.
  • 30 people were killed in the incident, while another 44 are still missing.
  • The Mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city has warned that there may be no survivors.

Russian missile hit on an apartment building in Dnipro on Saturday. The mayor of the Ukrainian city has warned that there may be no survivors.

According to local officials, 30 people were killed in the incident, while another 44 are still missing.

Borys Filatov, mayor of Dnipro, said there was a “limited” prospect of finding anyone else alive.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on public television in Moscow that military activities were proceeding as planned.

On Saturday, Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa were also attacked.

The deadly Dnipro strike impacted the entrance of a nine-story structure, converting many floors to smoldering wreckage.

Mr. Filatov added that roughly 70 persons required medical treatment and of those 10 were “in a terrible state”.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki termed the missile strikes “inhuman”.

“Russia willfully insists on committing war crimes against civilians”. He added.

Speaking on state TV, Mr. Putin said “everything is developing within the parameters of the plan of the ministry of defense and the general staff”.

In his evening address on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had received numerous expressions of sympathy from around the world and denounced Russia’s “cowardly silence” in the aftermath of the attack.

Switching to Russian during his statement, he said he wanted to address those “who even now could not utter a few words of condemnation of this terror”.

“Your cowardly silence, your desire to ‘wait it out,’ will only result in the fact that these same terrorists will come after you one day.”

Statement of Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg on the Dnipro strike

Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned on Sunday that Ukraine should expect further heavy armament delivery from Western countries.

“Recent pledges for heavy military weapons are significant, and I anticipate more in the near future,” Mr Stoltenberg told the journalists.

Russia’s missile barrage came on the same day that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated his government will supply Challenger 2 tanks to Kyiv’s armed forces in an attempt to assist “push Russian troops back”.

In reaction, Moscow stated that supplying more weaponry to Ukraine will result in more Russian actions and civilian losses.

Former NATO chief wants countries to punish China for attacking Taiwan

NATO chief
  • The former NATO secretary-general warned during a visit to the island on Thursday.
  • Democratic nations should make it clear the “grave economic consequences.”
  • China would experience if it took action against self-governing Taiwan.

China has increased pressure on Taiwan to push its sovereignty claims despite the democratic island nation’s strong opposition. Over the past three years, Chinese air force flights have been conducted practically daily close to the island.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen compared China’s military aggressiveness towards Taiwan to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, arguing that democratic nations must band together to assure Ukraine’s success in order to prevent a Chinese attack on Taiwan.

Rasmussen told reporters at a news conference in Taipei that “any attempt by China to change the status quo in Taiwan by force should generate an equally unified response and we must make this clear to China now.”

“Compared to Russia, China is much more dependent on global supply systems. Clearly stating the dire economic repercussions of any invasion right now would be a highly effective deterrence “, he asserted, adding that he thought Chinese President Xi Jinping was keenly monitoring the course of the Ukrainian conflict.

Until he left the transatlantic defense alliance in 2014, former Danish Prime Minister Rasmussen was one of the world’s most senior diplomats. He urged European nations to develop “comprehensive” penalties against China in the event that it ever moves on Taiwan.

If necessary, China retains the right to annex Taiwan by the use of force. Taiwan contends Beijing’s claims are invalid since the People’s Republic of China has never ruled the island and that only its people have the authority to determine their own future.

Rasmussen suggested that European nations take part in training exercises with Taiwan’s armed forces, which now rely primarily on American and domestically produced weapons.

“The success of Ukraine must be ensured by everyone who supports a democratic Taiwan and an international system based on rules. The free world must back the people of Taiwan and Ukraine in making their own decisions about their future.”

Putin sends out a Russian warship equipped with Zircon hypersonic missile

putin
  • Putin has sent a warship loaded with cutting-edge hypersonic missiles to the Mediterranean and Indian Oceans.
  • Admiral Gorshkov’s top speed is Mach 8, or roughly 9,900 kilometers per hour (6,138 mph).
  • Its first deployment in a hypothetical combat scenario would be the current mission.

According to Russian official media on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent one of his nation’s most advanced warships equipped with cutting-edge hypersonic missiles on a lengthy journey via the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and into the Indian Ocean.

According to a report, the frigate Admiral Gorshkov departed from an undisclosed port in northern Russia after Putin spoke with the ship’s captain and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu via video link.

Putin bragged that the ship was armed with long-range Zircon hypersonic missiles, which travel more than five times as fast as sound and are more difficult to track and intercept.

It doesn’t exist anywhere else in the globe, according to Putin. I am confident that such formidable weapons will dependably defend Russia from potential foreign threats and will support the preservation of our nation’s interests, he continued.

According to sources from the period, Russia tested the Zircon system in late 2021 by firing from Admiral Gorshkov in the White Sea and striking a naval target more than 400 kilometers (250 miles) distant.

Its first deployment in a hypothetical combat scenario would be the current mission.

According to Shoigu in the report, “the main efforts throughout the campaign will be concentrated on repelling Russia’s threats, ensuring regional peace, and stability with friendly countries.”

The 10th month of Russia’s war against the neighboring Ukraine has passed, yet that conflict was not directly addressed in the TASS report.

It’s also unknown whether the Zircon missile could be used in that conflict.

If it performs as promised, it is a terrifying weapon.

Zircon is “a maneuverable anti-ship hypersonic cruise missile” with a 500–1,000 km range, according to the US-based Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance (310 to 620 miles).

According to the alliance, its top speed is Mach 8, or roughly 9,900 kilometers per hour (6,138 mph). Any speed over Mach 5 is considered hypersonic (3,836 mph).

According to the alliance’s website, “if that information is accurate, the Zircon missile would be the fastest in the world, making it nearly impossible to defend against owing to its speed alone.”

The site also lists the plasma cloud of the missile as another “valuable” characteristic.

“A plasma cloud entirely surrounds the missile while it is in flight, absorbing all radio frequency radiation and rendering the missile invisible to radars. This enables the missile to go to the target unnoticed,” it claims.

However, logistical difficulties make it difficult to launch Zircon missiles from the Admiral Gorshkov against targets in Ukraine.

The best firing range for the weapons, in Russian eyes, would be from the Black Sea to the south of Ukraine. However, in order to reach there, the Russian battleship would have to cross the Bosphorus Strait, which is under Turkish jurisdiction. Ankara has stated that it will not permit foreign naval boats access to this area since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine.

Even if the Admiral Gorshkov might theoretically fire on Ukraine from the northern Mediterranean, the flight path to Ukraine would pass over NATO nations, which would be perceived as a significant increase in Russian aggressiveness.

According to the CSIS Missile Defense Project, TASS reported that the Gorshkov is also equipped with Kalibr-NK cruise missiles, which have a maximum range of 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles). However, while having a greater range, those weapons would still have trouble reaching Ukraine.

Even so, the deployment of Admiral Gorshkov offered Putin something positive to discuss despite significant Russian casualties in the conflict with Ukraine, including one of its prized battleships, the Moskva, which was sunk in April of last year in what Ukraine claims was an attack by its missile troops.

According to analyst Carl Schuster, the deployment also serves as a political message for Putin.

According to Schuster, “He’s trying to show Russia is still a global player despite the expenses and criticism of his attack on Ukraine.”

He may demonstrate to his home audiences that the global response has not been as effective as depicted in the Western media and that Russia still has allies in important regions, according to Schuster. He is indicating to the world that sanctions have not hindered the Russian navy’s ability to function and that it continues to be a major maritime force.

Putin congratulated his forces after the deployment. Putin stated, “This is fantastic collaborative work, which culminated with a nice, predicted result.

“We will keep enhancing the fighting capabilities of the Armed Forces and developing cutting-edge models of weapons and other security-related equipment. This is a weapon that shows promise,” Putin was quoted.
