Islamabad police register case in leopard escape case

Islamabad police
  • The leopard attacked several people.
  • It was later contained by the IWMB.
  • Sahala Police registered case under sections 324.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Police had registered a case against an unknown suspect for keeping a leopard as a pet after it attacked residents of a private housing society in the federal capital.

The leopard, which was on the loose a day earlier, attacked several people. It was later contained by the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB).

The case was registered at the Sahala Police Station under sections 324 (attempt to commit qatl-i-amd) and 289 (negligent conduct with respect to animal) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

“The suspect endangered the lives of citizens by keeping dangerous animals,” the Islamabad police shared on Twitter.

The law enforcement agency added that a search for the suspect is underway and legal action will be taken after arresting them.

The news that a leopard was roaming around Islamabad and attacking people spread quickly Thursday evening with several people sharing images and videos that went viral on social media.

In videos posted to social media of the six-hour jaunt, the young male cat could be seen slipping between cars before knocking down a man and leaping over a garden fence.

After a cat and mouse game that had lasted several hours, the IWMB captured the wildcat and took it to the city’s former zoo that was shut down in 2020 over its treatment of animals.

The creature, aged between two and three years old, is now in the company of a brown bear, a tiger, and several monkeys — rescued by wildlife authorities in recent months.

In an update today on the whole saga, the IWMB identified the leopard as male and said he was “in good health” at the IWMB’s rescue and rehab centre. “[The] IWMB scientific committee will decide next steps for leopard rehabilitation. Leopard has been named Deeaitchay by IWMB staff,” the update stated on Twitter.

Earlier, addressing the number of attacks the animal had made on residents, the police had said news of the leopard had brought a lot of people out of their homes and the leopard was attacking one person after the other.

Turkey Earthquake, a father and daughter are reunited after days of searching

Turkey
  • They were stuck together when their house collapsed during the earthquake.
  • His wife and son did not survive the ordeal.
  • She was placed in the custody of social services when he was admitted to the hospital.

Adana: Screams first… then piercing cries… The phrase “father, father” is then repeated several times.

Gada Ayyan, 4, and her father, Ahmet Ayyan, are being reunited after being buried in the wreckage of their former home in southern Turkey.

They were stuck together when their house collapsed during the earthquake that killed almost 46,000 people. When Gada was rescued and transferred to the hospital, the two endured an agonizing few days apart.

“When it first started shaking I grabbed my daughter and my whole family began to run out,” Ahmet said. “The building collapsed on top of us all.”

His wife and son did not survive the ordeal. While he was stuck, Ahmet could hear his son’s crying. He was accompanied by his daughter. She was resting on his leg, and they were both locked, unable to escape.

The rubble reached up to his neck. On the fourth day under the rubble, he expressed despair. He was in a lot of agonies. His foot was severely injured. His daughter, on the other hand, would not let him give up hope of being saved.

“My daughter was telling me over and over papa don’t cry. Relax. They are coming to rescue us,” said Ahmet.

She directed his gaze to the light spilling through. And, lo and behold, they heard voices. They were about to be saved.

Gada was the first to be dragged out, scarcely scratched. They dug Ahmet out after about a half hour. Nonetheless, she was placed in the custody of social services when he was admitted to the hospital.

When he lost sight of his daughter, he knew if it was the last thing he ever did, he’d see her again.

He posted her picture on Facebook and Instagram, appealing seeking anyone who could help him find her. A relative eventually discovered that social services had a healthy little girl with no parents.

“She kept me alive.” He said of her constant encouragement for days under the rubble. “That is my little girl. She is my hero. She’s my hero”

They will have to deal with the loss of Gada’s mother and 7-year-old brother, but Ahmet and his daughter have each other to love and care for and that is enough he said.

RRR breaks Box Office records as the film crosses JPY 1 billion

Naatu Naatu
  • RRR is the first Indian movie to ever reach this milestone in the nation.
  • It has been months since RRR’s release.
  • The movie will make another 150–200 million yen if these holds continue.

RRR is set to mark JPY 1 billion mark for, the SS Rajamouli-directed epic starring Ram Charan and NTR Junior, in Japan. In fact, it has happened by the time you are reading this. On its 122nd day of release, the movie surpassed this remarkable threshold. It is the first Indian movie to ever reach this milestone in the nation. At JPY 400 million, Muthu previously held the record for highest-grossing Indian movie in Japan for more than 20 years.

RRR, which was first released in October of last year, has continuously maintained its box office performance for weeks on end. Most lately, however, it has seen a significant increase in its revenues as a result of the buzz that the awards season has created. Remarkably, the movie’s box office performance has improved significantly over the past four weeks, even outpacing that of its first week.

RRR is a Japanese Academy Award nominee.

Speaking of nominations, RRR has joined Hollywood movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Spider-man: No Way Home, Avatar: The Way of Water, and CODA in the prestigious “Best Foreign Language Film” category at the 46th Japan Academy Film Award. Should it receive this honour, it might increase the movie’s market appeal and increase its box office earnings. March 10th is the scheduled day for the winners to be announced.

(From left to right) Ram Charan, NTR Jr., and SS Rajamouli

Following are RRR’s Japanese box office totals:

Week 1 – JPY 81 million (8 days)
Week 2 – JPY 72 million
Week 3 – JPY 65 million
Week 4 – JPY 45 million
Week 5 – JPY 50 million
Week 6 – JPY 48 million
Week 7 – JPY 28 million
Week 8 – JPY 26 million
Week 9 – JPY 21 million
Week 10 – JPY 28 million
Week 11 – JPY 31 million
Week 12 – JPY 27 million
Week 13 – JPY 73 million
Week 14 – JPY 110 million
Week 15 – JPY 116 million
Week 16 – JPY 89 million
Week 17 – JPY 73 million approx

18th Saturday – JPY 12 million approx

JPY 995 million ($7.40 million/Rs. 60.50 crores) is the total.

It has been months since RRR’s release, yet it is still difficult to forecast how well it will perform at the box office. This is a hallmark of the Japanese market, where movies frequently have lengthy theatrical runs. At first, it looked reasonable to meet a goal of JPY 600–700 million, but with the movie’s current momentum, even JPY 1 billion became doable, which it has now done. The movie is still doing well, and in its thirtieth week, its decline should be less than 30%. The movie will make another 150–200 million yen if these holds continue. As it is difficult to predict how much higher it might rise, it is advisable to take a seat and savour the continued box office triumph.

Oman experiences 4.1-magnitude earthquake at Duqm

earthquake
  • The 4.1-magnitude tremor struck Duqm.
  • There were no reports of injuries or damage to property.
  • The alert level in Muscat and the rest of the Sultanate is now zero.

Muscat: Several citizens in Oman reported experiencing minor earthquake tremors on Sunday. However, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) confirmed that there were no reports of injuries or damage to property.

The 4.1-magnitude tremor struck Duqm at 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Earthquake Monitoring Centre (EMC) at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU).

While the alert level in Muscat and the rest of the Sultanate is now zero, the EMC warned that the direct impact of the earthquake will vary based on the kind, height, and nature of the buildings in the area.

Earthquakes are not unusual in Oman, according to experts, because the country is located in a seismically active zone. Oman’s government and other organizations have put in place mechanisms to monitor seismic activity and keep inhabitants informed of any potential dangers.

Dr. Issa Al Hussein, Director of the Earthquake Monitoring Centre (EMC), told Oman’s General Radio last week that the EMC has 21 stations equipped with cutting-edge equipment to monitor earthquakes and estimate their position, strength, and magnitude.

Because the Sultanate of Oman is part of the Arabian Plate in a convergence zone between the Arabian and Eurasian plates, seismic activity appears to be dynamic every now and then.

“We are in the process of setting up a monitoring station for the strong network that will be disseminated across cities and urban areas in the coming months. It is in the process of preparation and processing”, he stated.

US officials visits Riyadh to discuss Iran, regional security

Riyadh
  • Daniel Benaim expressed concern about the impact of Iran’s supply of weapons.
  • Benaim was part of a high-level US delegation that visited Riyadh.
  • He had come to Riyadh to discuss having a strong and robust security cooperation.

RIYADH: America’s Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Arabian Peninsula Affairs, Daniel Benaim, expressed concern about the impact of Iran’s supply of weapons to Russia and reaffirmed America’s commitment to advancing regional security at a press roundtable hosted by the US Embassy’s Quincy House in Riyadh on Thursday.

Benaim was part of a high-level US delegation that visited Riyadh from February 13 to 16, including Special Envoy for Iran Rob Malley, acting counterterrorism coordinator and Acting US Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS Christopher Landberg, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East Dana Stroul.

“Iran’s continuing supply of drones and other armaments to Russia for its aggression and brutal attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine will affect the security and safety of this region, and I think we should all be concerned by what Iran is getting in return for helping Russia’s brutal assault on civilians in Ukraine,” Benaim said.

“We can expect that to include different kinds of support to Iran’s defense industry and Iran’s capabilities to further destabilize this region, including through its proxies. It’s a very concerning prospect and something we all need to take very seriously,” he added.

Security cooperation

The deputy assistant secretary said that he had come to Riyadh to have a series of conversations and make sure that “our partners in the region and, frankly, our own people in this region, who are also under threat from Iran and its proxies in multiple countries, have a strong and robust security cooperation.”

The delegation traveled to the Kingdom to participate in the US-Gulf Cooperation Council Working Group, where they discussed common priorities such as Iran, counterterrorism, integrated air and missile defense, and maritime security.

Benaim explained that numerous top US military officers were presenting cutting-edge briefings on maritime awareness threats at sea, as well as the most recent thinking on how to best repel missile and drone threats

“There is a great deal of innovation happening by our adversaries, and we need to be innovative and nimble as well in how we respond together, and that conversation was happening this week,” Benaim said of counterterrorism measures against Iran.

“We have certainly seen Iran provide a range of weapons and training and advanced equipment, such as drones and other support, to Houthi militants in Yemen,” he added.

“The unlawful transfer of lethal aid from Iran is irresponsible and dangerous and leads to violence and instability across the Middle East.”

Benaim also underlined the American commitment to collaborating closely with Gulf governments to counter Iranian aggression.

“Alongside our partners, the United States will continue to deter and interdict this kind of lethal material entering the region, as was demonstrated by our recent actions, including the seizure of weapons and explosives and component parts on multiple occasions over the past few months,” he said.

Iran’s nuclear issues

Benaim noted that the threats to regional and international security presented by Iran’s nuclear issues, as well as Iran’s decision to withdraw from negotiations, were thoroughly reviewed.

“These two were really important and deep consultations that (resulted in) a clear picture of the path forward,” he said.

“The Iranians lost the opportunity for a swift return to the full implantation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in September when they turned their backs on a deal that was on the table and approved by all,” Benaim added. “JCPOA has not been on our agenda for months now. What remains very much alive is President (Joe) Biden’s absolute commitment to never allowing Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon, as was reiterated and made clear in this week’s meetings.”

Benaim also underlined the American commitment to collaborating closely with Gulf governments to counter Iranian aggression.

Benaim emphasized the importance of regional security and robust defense and counterterrorism alliances.

Diplomacy is the best way to achieve that goal

“As we heard at the GCC, as well from member states, we believe — and our partners believe — that diplomacy is the best way to achieve that goal; diplomacy backed by strong security cooperation and partnership. But President Biden has been very clear that we have not removed any option from the table and that a military option remains as a last resort,” he said.

Benaim also discussed prospective strategic alliances between the Kingdom and the United States in sectors other than the military.

“This is an 80-year strategic relationship built up over generations with lots to discuss and lots to do,” Benaim said. “Our efforts together include ambitious plans to deploy clean energy and develop technologies that will play a clear role in the energy transition of the world.”

He added that building greater collaboration between energy experts in the two countries can enhance efforts to combat the climate crisis and contribute to the deployment of cleaner energy resources, not just in the US and Saudi Arabia, but around the world.

“There are lots of exciting projects underway between our two countries in fields like green hydrogen and electric vehicles, not to mention tourism, entertainment, and a whole range of other issues, where the Kingdom is changing and the US is eager to be a partner through our businesses … and bring about some of those economic transformations.”

Cheetahs are being airlifted to India as part of an effort to resurrect the species

India
  • Twelve cheetahs have arrived in India.
  • The cheetahs are part of an endeavor by India and South Africa to reintroduce the cheetah in India.
  • Cheetahs were declared extinct in India in 1952.

New Delhi: Twelve cheetahs have arrived in India as part of efforts to bring the species back from extinction after decades in the country.

The South African feline predators were flown in from Johannesburg on Saturday, according to the Indian Air Force.

The cheetahs will next be carried by helicopters from the India Air Force to their final destination, the Kuno National Park in central Madhya Pradesh state, and released. They will be joined by eight cheetahs who were moved from Namibia in September of last year.

According to a joint statement from India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and South Africa‘s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the cheetahs are part of an endeavor by India and South Africa to reintroduce the cheetah in India.

The program would “expand the cheetah meta-population and return cheetahs to a former range state following their local extinction due to overhunting and habitat loss over the last century,” according to the announcement.

Cheetahs were declared extinct in India in 1952, according to the report.

According to the statement, the 12 cheetahs are all “wild-born” and are familiar with their natural predators. Cheetahs are preyed upon by other big cats and eagles.
