China declares “victory” over COVID-19 with zero-COVID policy

China’s senior officials declared a “decisive triumph” over Covid-19, claiming the world’s lowest fatality rate, although experts have questioned Beijing’s data as the coronovirus tore across the country after mainly being kept at bay for three years.

China abruptly abandoned its zero-Covid policy in early December, with 80% of its 1.4 billion population being infected, a key government expert stated last month.

Though there were widespread stories of filled hospital rooms and mortuaries, China recorded only about 80,000 Covid deaths in hospitals in the two months after lifting its limitations.

Other analysts claim the actual toll was significantly greater, as many patients die at home and doctors were widely known to have been discouraged from reporting Covid as a cause of death.

“With ongoing efforts to optimise Covid-19 prevention and control measures since November 2022, China’s Covid-19 reaction has made a smooth transition in a relatively short time,” China’s Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) stated in a meeting on Thursday.

It stated China’s efforts resulted in more than 200 million people receiving medical treatment, including roughly 800,000 serious cases.

According to official media, leaders warned that while the situation is better, the virus is spreading globally and mutating.

China would boost senior vaccinations and medical product manufacture, the summit said. According to Xinhua, China’s top leadership council, the PSC, asked all areas and agencies to improve medical services.

The remark came weeks before China’s annual legislature session and as regulators try to restore an economy ravaged by three years of Covid restrictions.

After unprecedented demonstrations, China abruptly ended President Xi Jinping’s zero-Covid policy in December, releasing the coronavirus on a population that had been mostly protected since it surfaced in Wuhan in late 2019.

For months, many countries and the WHO have suspected China of underreporting deaths, with some experts forecasting that Covid might kill at least one million Chinese this year.

The government stated the Covid situation was “minimal” after the Chinese New Year, despite concerns that the enormous flow of travellers would cause an outbreak.

According to details, the operation was conducted in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) district after intelligence confirmed the presence of a suicide bomber associated with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

During an exchange of fire, an alleged suicide bomber identified as Naeek Rehman Mehsud Alias Nekro was killed after his vest exploded. The killed terrorist had come to Pakistan from Afghanistan and was involved in various attacks on security forces.

He was also a close ally of important TTP commanders Azmat Ullah aka Lala and Khairban aka Khairu.

LHC seeks reply from Speaker NA in PTI MNA’s resignations case

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court(LHC) has sought answers from other parties, including the Speaker of the National Assembly, on the issue of PTI’s resignations.

Justice Shahid Karim Lahore High Court heard the case against the approval of the resignations of 43 members of the PTI Assembly and the notification of the Speaker.

Barrister Ali Zafar, the counsel of Fawad Chaudhry and other members, presented their arguments in court.

The court rejected the immediate plea for stay-order on the Speaker’s notification and asked the Election Commission, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and other parties to respond on March 7.

In the petition, it was submitted that the speaker did not listen to the position of the members before accepting the resignation, the notification of the Election Commission to de-notify the members of the assembly should be declared null and void.

In the petition, it was requested that the court should also stop the implementation of the schedule of the by-elections of the national constituencies.

It may be noted that PTI’s Riyaz Fatyana and others filed a petition against the acceptance of resignations in the Lahore High Court.

It should be noted that after accepting the resignations from the National Assembly, the Election Commission de-notified 43 members of the National Assembly of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf.

He attributes the movie’s young actor, Usama Javaid Haider, who he first met during a Lahore shoot years prior, to the success. The Anaa actor remarked on Haider’s dedication, enthusiasm, and work ethic on Wednesday when revealing that Haider had received the Best Actor prize for his performance in Mukhtar’s horror movie.

“I’m super proud of this kid. I honestly feel that I’m fortunate to have come across him. I met him at a shoot in Lahore where we had a scene together. I had to sit and react when this kid had a nine-minute monologue. By the time the monologue ended, I was blown away by his performance. He is a brilliant actor and a hardworking one,” he wrote.

Mukhtar needed a dubbing voice for Gulabo Rani’s post-production and thought of Haider. For the young actor, that day turned out to be a turning point.  Mukhtar said, “”We were doing post-production for Gulabo, and Usama had some dubbing work left. I asked him if he could come in for the dubbing session, and he came without any hesitation. When he reached the studio, I noticed that he had lost weight and had shaved his head. When I asked him why he had done so, he tried to play it down. That’s when he revealed that his cancer had returned and he had to shave his head for his chemo treatment. I was shocked and asked him why he hadn’t told me earlier so we could have rescheduled the session. But he simply replied, ‘Usman bhai, work is work.”

Mukhtar called the actor a “superstar” and praised his talent and hard ethic in his congratulations, expressing his appreciation for him. He further wrote, “I have no words to describe what a gem this kid is and how much I’ve learned from him in the process.”

He continued by saying that Haider was now a Pakistani actor with a worldwide reputation after receiving the Best Actor prize at the Bucharest Shortcut Cinefest. He also acknowledged his pride in Haider’s accomplishments.

Mukhtar revealed the news on social media after his short film received the Best Short Film Prize at the LA Sci-Fi & Horror Festival 2022 earlier this year. He shared a picture of his trophy with the description, “Leviathan Platinum Award 2022,” and expressed his gratitude for the accomplishment.

KARACHI: President North Karachi Association of Trade & Industry (NKATI), Faisal Moiz Khan, has rejected the mini budget and the huge increase in gas & electricity tariff and, calling it disastrous for the economy & industry.

He said “If the government does not withdraw the increase in taxes and increase in electricity and gas rates through the mini budget, the industries will be closed. As a result, millions of workers will become unemployed while domestic exports will also be adversely affected.”

President NKATI Faisal Moiz Khan said that the government had earlier increased the gas & electricity tariff enormously, and at the same time, the government also indicated that the subsidy will be phased out, which will increase the production cost of the industries immensely.

“It will become almost impossible for the industrial community to run their factories, which will certainly affect the delivery of export orders, so the government should not burden the business, industry and the public to meet the IMF conditions”, he feared.

NKATI president was of the opinion that “If the business and industry will run, then the country will run, and if the people are prosperous, then the country will be prosperous, but unfortunately, all the actions of the government are on the contrary.”

Faisal Moiz Khan demanded the government that instead of taking anti-economic measures on the guidance of the IMF, business, industry and people-friendly policies should be formulated, and measures such as mini-budget should be avoided while withdrawing the increase in electricity and gas rates.
