‘The Last Of Us’: A Lot Scarier Than You Think

The Last Of Us
  • We have witnessed many zombie apocalypse tales.
  • The Last of Us reminds us of the original scariness of those tales.
  • The pandemic of zombies in The Last of Us is made of the most realistic zombie-related material.

The pandemic of zombies depicted in The Last of Us is made of the most realistic zombie-related material available: a previously unidentified illness manages to infect a human and spread from one host to another, converting humans into lifeless shells who are solely interested in spreading the sickness. But there’s something particularly ominous about The Last of Us’ Cordyceps epidemic. It is difficult to pin down exactly what it is, but in the end, familiarity is the key. In the series, the fungus that takes over the earth is far closer to humanity than we are prone to think, which only makes them more difficult to combat.

We have witnessed many zombie apocalypses over the course of the last few decades. Others, like Zombieland, made us giggle, while others, like Train to Busan, made us shudder with horror. The globe was overrun with zombie doomsday scenarios, with reasons ranging from the biological to the supernatural, thanks to shows like The Walking Dead, Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, and Warm Bodies. And for a while, we were infatuated with it. However, after a while, we grew tired of zombies and it seemed like a very long period would pass before they could frighten us once more. The Last of Us then reminded us of the original scariness of those tales.

The fact that we can actually see the sickness as it spreads is the first factor that makes the pandemic in The Last of Us extremely terrifying. Fungi, in contrast to viruses and bacteria, can also be macroscopic, allowing people to see them with unaided eyes. When Ellie, Tess (Anna Torv), and Joel encounter their first clickers in the episode, they realise that the mushroom-like development atop the creature’s parted head is more than just a sign of the infection. Instead, they are focusing on the disease’s actual infectious agent.

Here’s an illustration to assist clarify things: Think of the Zika virus, which circulated a few years ago in many different regions of the world. Due to the fact that Zika is a virus-borne illness, as its name implies, its infectious agent cannot be seen without a microscope. The mosquitoes that transmit the disease from one person to another are visible, though. Even so, there is no way to tell if a mosquito is carrying the Zika virus or not. The sickness is not brought on by the mosquito itself.

Additionally, despite the fact that Zika produces a number of obvious symptoms, the most typical of which is an unsightly rash, these are only outward signs of the underlying illness in your body. Although the pustules themselves are not the virus, other rash-causing infections can spread through the liquid that collects inside of them. We would need to envision a virus that slowly takes over your body in the shape of a huge rash for a viral sickness to be as terrifying as the infection in The series, not an almost invisible entity that can only be seen by its reaction to another organism.

The Cordyceps infection shares more similarities with helminth-related illnesses than it does with bacterial, viral, or even other fungal infections in humans. Worms are after all clearly visible to the human eye, much like the macroscopic Cordyceps in The Last of Us. But once more, the obviousness of the symptoms comes up. We cannot ignore the fact that the Cordyceps have a bodily horror element. The symptoms of worm infections, such as nausea, anorexia, and diarrhoea, don’t bother healthy people as much as, say, a brilliant green fungus colony on your face.

Another unique characteristic of fungi is their obtrusive presence in our daily lives, which results from their occasionally being visible to the unaided eye. We can clearly see them all about us, poorly hidden in places like the earth we foot on and our own refrigerators, much like worms. But unlike worms, we may not always find fungus repulsive. Depending on the species, we may even incorporate it into our regular diet. No rational person, it’s true, would ever assemble a sandwich from two pieces of rotten bread and a slice of white, fuzzy cheese, but let the one who has never enjoyed a delicious Portobello mushroom throw the first blow.

In some situations, we can even find fungi to be cute. Simply envision a tiny red-and-white mushroom in the middle of a forest. Isn’t that cute? Imagine the same mushroom now coming out of a person’s eyes. Not as adorable, yes?

The pictures of the homicidal Cordyceps in The Last of Us seem to be at odds with the way we view fungus as a semi-domesticated species that we maintain so near to our bodies and digestive systems. They resemble Stephen King’s Cujo in some ways more than Stephen Soderbergh’s Contagion’s virus.

Fungi and humans share a strong relationship that goes beyond just physical and emotional proximity. We commonly associate fungi with plants because of their outward appearance. This, however, is untrue. The Last of Us’s Dr Neuman (John Hannah) argues in the pilot episode that fungi and humans are actually quite similar biologically. Mycology, or the study of fungi, was first a branch of botany since fungi were thought of as early plants. However, studies from the early 1990s showed that fungus DNA is really more similar to human DNA than it is to bacterial or plant DNA.

The series doesn’t only use our very real limits to arouse anxiety because there isn’t enough medicine or preventative measures to deal with a fungal pandemic like the one it depicts. A few of our concerns from the actual world are also addressed by the impact that climate change has played in the evolution of the cordyceps. The Cordyceps evolved in the series and were able to survive within the warm-blooded human bodies due to a considerable rise in world temperature. Even though things don’t precisely look like they do on the programme, they aren’t all that dissimilar either.

Climate change may soon expose humanity to many different illnesses that previously only afflicted other types of mammals, even though there are currently no predictions regarding diseases that only infect bugs shifting to human hosts.

‘The Last Of Us’ is completely different from the original game

The Last of Us
  • The Last of Us carved out a narrative that sets itself off the original game.
  • It has been clear from the first episode all the way.
  • This has paid off in a slew of unanticipated ways.

The Last Of Us has carved out a narrative path that steadily sets itself off from the original game over the course of the past few weeks since it started airing. While the overall narrative framework is mostly the same, it has been clear from the first episode all the way through the most current one that writer Craig Mazin is most interested in the little details that haven’t been properly addressed before. The broad themes have a lot of well-known elements, but the way it has all been done has prioritised patience as it wanders off to find its own pockets of poetry.

This has paid off in a slew of unanticipated ways because it goes beyond simply reproducing what we already know and instead creates something that is deeper and more profound precisely because of how new it all feels.

There will always be a lot of pressure to capture the enchantment of what first captivated readers to the story whenever you set out to adapt an already well-loved classic. It would be a squandered opportunity to not push the plot in other areas when transitioning to the medium of television with all the potential it offers. There are many opportunities to delve deeper into narrative themes that have either never been addressed before or have only been alluded to. Mazin and crew are proving in a fantastic way that this is an adaptation that isn’t just reliant on what has already been done by plunging headfirst into this possibility.

There is nothing like sitting down to watch a show knowing there is the freedom to be found in how it all plays out. It might ruffle the feathers of those searching for something that isn’t going to rock the boat too much. It has practically always opened doors to new thematic territory, rather than focusing on the recognizability of what we’ve already seen. Even while it can be risky, this can also be a rewarding endeavour.

The series most closely resembles another recent HBO adaptation, Station Eleven, in how it frequently makes sweeping alterations to the original text. The game itself will always be available for you to revisit with its original story unaltered, notwithstanding the criticisms of these changes. Why then wouldn’t you make some modifications? A show can develop into something that is more like a discussion that talks back to and builds upon the original work, rather than just being a dull repetition of what has already been communicated by the game.

It can develop into something contemplative in a way that starts to delve deeper. Without giving away any surprises, the third episode starring Bill and Frank shows how effective this may be. When it is willing to cut practically all of the threads connecting it to the plot we would have anticipated, it can stand alone in the emotional investigation it undertakes. This series, in contrast to other similar adaptations that have felt ordinary, has managed to discover something poignant and melancholy without being able to predict each emotional beat in advance.

The most engaging moments transcend the confines of this, outshining the many sequences that are brought to life as a function of generating nearly perfect shot-for-shot recreations, which can be intriguing in a fundamental sense. Anyone could simply set up re-staged actor-driven cinematics from the games and call it a day. If all the experience had to offer was copying, it may bring about some thrills of recognition, but the benefits would shortly wane. The creation of an emotional resonance that fully exploits the flexibility of this particular visual form is more powerful.

This can partly be attributed to not having to worry about the specifics like finding a ladder or getting over an obstacle that defines a game, which has doomed dreadful previous video game adaptations that are best forgotten, but it also extends beyond that.

There is much that may be moulded into something spectacular, despite the ways that so-called “prestige television” might have its own recognisable patterns and conventions that you start to identify after watching them enough. Mazin’s adaptation of The Last of Us is a different animal that, if it can maintain its current course, has the potential to be one of the best such adaptations in recent memory, both in terms of the more grounded reality of the characters in some of the tense action sequences and the emotional underpinning of it all.

It sticks too strictly to the game’s rules, which results in the moments that stay the most clumsy; in contrast, the moments that feel the most natural are when it takes its own course.

When everything is said and done, the result is a programme that is defined less by its historical context and more by an admirable willingness to take risks and invest time in aspects that it can genuinely claim as its own. By doing this, it sets itself apart from the game by presenting a distinctive experience rather than merely a reproduction. This is what distinguishes the series so much from others since it goes beyond simple mimicry. Instead, it involves shaping the narrative clay that already exists into a brand-new piece of art. It makes sure to go deeper in manners that are both effective and unexpected.

The route that it is taking to get there offers something unique in its own tragic temperament, even if we know where it will ultimately end. The show is taking a lot of bigger swings that are hitting home and elevating it above basic replication rather than letting us get caught up in how closely it can replicate something we’ve already seen in a way that reduces the tale to a checklist. The better the series will be, the more it will lean on this going forward.

Chinese province has lifted limits on unmarried people having kid

Chinese
  • China’s southwestern province of Sichuan will drop restrictions on unmarried people having children.
  • Starting from February 15, all citizens – including unmarried parents – can register with no ceiling on the number of children.
  • China’s population shrank last year for the first time in more than six decades.

Sichuan, a province in southwest China, will remove restrictions on unmarried individuals having children as part of a larger government effort to increase the nation’s declining birth rate.

The change in policy followed China’s population declining last year for the first time in more than 60 years, a historic turning point in the country’s escalating demographic problem.

Only married couples are currently permitted by the Sichuan government to register the births of up to two children. There is no cap on the number of children that can be registered as of February 15; this includes unmarried parents.

In China, parents frequently need to register their child’s birth in order to get benefits like maternity insurance. Additionally, a hukou, a document used to register a home, is required to give kids access to social welfare, such as healthcare and education.

The new rules, according to a statement from the Sichuan Provincial Health Commission, changed the emphasis of birth registration to “the desire and results of childbirth.”

According to a representative of the Sichuan Health Commission, the goal of the policy is to protect the rights of single moms rather than to promote the parenthood of unmarried individuals. The strategy would support “long-term and balanced population development,” according to the commission’s declaration.

According to the new regulations, single parents in Sichuan will now be able to take use of benefits that were previously only available to married couples. These benefits include maternity insurance, which pays for paid maternity leave and prenatal care.

Sichuan is the sixth most populous province in China, with a population of more than 83 million.

Its easing of the rules for birth registration follows similar moves made by other provinces, including Guangdong and Shaanxi.

Policymakers have been particularly concerned about China’s demographic dilemma, which is predicted to have a growing influence on GDP in the years to come.

After understanding that the limitation has contributed to a fast aging population and a diminishing workforce that may seriously jeopardize the nation’s economic and social stability, Beijing ended its decades-long and highly contentious “one child” policy in 2015.

The Chinese government stated in 2015 that it will permit married couples to have two children in an effort to reverse the nation’s declining birth rate. However, notwithstanding a small increase in 2016, the national birth rate has kept declining.

Lula moves to save indigenous Yanomani in the face of food deaths

Yanomani
  • Brazil’s President has called for emergency action to assist the country’s Yanomani indigenous group.
  • Living conditions among the relatively isolated Yanomani have deteriorated precipitously.
  • Over 570 people have died from hunger in the last four years, according to local media.

According to a government statement on Monday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has requested immediate assistance for the nation’s Yanomami indigenous people.

According to Brasil, there have been over 570 hunger-related deaths among the relatively remote Yanomani people in the past four years.

The new Brazilian government strategy will work to ensure security in the region, where trespassers and illegal miners have allegedly harmed deforestation, spread disease, and obstructed traffic. It will also work to offer nutritional and health support to the Yanomami.

The effort, which will work with Brazil’s Ministries of Justice, Defense, Indigenous People, and Mining, also aims to ensure that wells and cisterns have access to clean drinking water and to detect mercury pollution in nearby rivers, another effect of illegal mining operations.

On January 20, the region was deemed to be in a state of public health emergency. Following the announcement, Lula made one of his first official journeys as president of Brazil since assuming office at the beginning of the year by traveling to Yanomami territory.

Separately, Justice Minister Flavio Dino told  Brasil that his department has launched an investigation to see if the previous administration of Jair Bolsonaro engaged in “genocide” against the Yanomami.

Former president Bolsonaro, who was pro-business, publicly favored Amazon growth. He also visited Yanomani land while president, promising one town that he would honor their request for no mining, but he reduced financing for state organizations tasked with stopping illegal mining, forestry, and grazing throughout his administration.

According to Survival International, a group that works to defend indigenous rights, the Yanomami reside in the mountains and rain forests of northern Brazil and southern Venezuela.

The coronavirus was spreading among the Yanomami by miners who had unlawfully infiltrated indigenous territory, the Brazilian Socio-Environmental Institute warned in 2020.

At the time, the ISA stated on its website that “now, without a doubt, the main vector for the spread of COVID-19 inside the Yanomami Indigenous Area is the more than 20,000 illegal miners that go in and out of the territory without any control.”

‘A Rotten Family Tree’: Psycho Moms And Dads Are Out For Blood

  • The 1996 film Scream begins with a game of life or death.
  • In Scream, Mrs Voorhees, Jason’s mother, was the first murderer.
  • Real-world frustrations contribute to Pamela’s motivations in Sick.

The 1996 film Scream begins with a game of life or death. On Friday the 13th (1980), when Ghostface asks who the killer is, Casey (Drew Barrymore) responds, her dread turning to rage when the killer taunts the girl. Listen, Jason was there! Goddamn, I watched that movie twenty times. Ghostface is unconvinced. Then you should be aware that Mrs Voorhees, Jason’s mother, was the first murderer. Jason didn’t appear until the follow-up! By slipping in this clever question, screenwriter Kevin Williamson accomplishes two tasks simultaneously. He issues a warning regarding Ghostface, saying that in the event that a killer approaches, you better be prepared. And it demonstrates his affection for Camp Crystal Lake, particularly the bloodshed committed there by Mrs Voorhees (Betsy Palmer).

In addition to serving as a model for subsequent slasher films, Friday the 13th also provided the “killer parent” archetype.
These people become ruthless killers as a result of the overwhelming grief they experience after losing a kid. Williamson uses parents-gone psychotic to give his slasher movies’ villains realistic motivations because there isn’t much screen time left after they are revealed to be the bad guys.

Sidney (Neve Campbell) witnesses friends and total strangers being attacked by a new Ghostface killer in Scream 2 (1997). Under one mask is a brand-new friend, while under the other is a familiar face. Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), the killer from the previous film, is unquestionably six feet underground. His mother has come to complete the task her son began by seeking “good, old-fashioned revenge.” In order to disguise herself, Mrs Loomis (Laurie Metcalf) poses as star-struck reporter Debbie Salt in public. Gale (Courteney Cox), the queen of snarky reporters, responds to her attempts to approach him by saying, “Your complimentary remarks are both desperate and obvious.” Mrs Loomis at least has the intelligence to avoid using an alias that is truly an anagram.

In order to kill Randy and pursue Gale, she dons the Ghostface outfit multiple times. This may be an unhealthy method for her to feel connected to her late son. A ferocious monster emerges when Mrs. Loomis finally meets Sidney. The mother’s wide, unflinching eyes match the white of her dress pants. She has Sidney under gunpoint while grinning strangely. Metcalf deconstructs Debbie Salt’s mousiness into the predator of her inner self by deftly straddling the line between hammy and anger. By the time she is nearly overpowered by the set’s accessories and props, Mrs Loomis screams and furiously swings a knife in an attempt to sever any piece of Sidney’s skin.

“Do you know what gives me the flu? I’m so tired of hearing people blame the parents for everything. That the family is where it all begins,” she laments. Do you want to assign blame? Why not assign responsibility to your mother? Sidney points the finger at Mrs Loomis, but Kevin Williamson very definitely doesn’t. He makes an appearance in the episode of Eli Roth’s History of Horror titled “Sequels That Don’t Suck,” which is about horror sequels that successfully do something different to justify their existence. In discussing Scream 2, Williamson names several people who are to responsible for Billy’s bloodlust: “Poor parenting produces psychopaths.”

“Billy is not remembered by Mrs Loomis as the vicious murderer he was, but rather as an angel. Mrs Loomis responds, “Was it a negative, derogatory remark about my son? ” when Sidney undermines Billy’s memories. Regarding my Billy? This is a woman who arranges a “real-life sequel” of many deaths in order to respect his memory. One can only speculate as to the trouble this mother and son pair would have gotten into if death had not separated them.”

Before Randy’s (Jamie Kennedy) tragic passing, he discussed the identity of the new Ghostface; after all, it didn’t have to be two young men once more. He gives Mrs Voorhees as an illustration of a great serial killer. Williamson intentionally mentions her in two Scream movies. It recognises the history of horror, such as Betsy Palmer’s portrayal of the devilish mother. She comes across as an unassuming menace; after all, who would think that an elderly woman wearing a warm blue sweater would be able to stab someone in the neck? Many characters end up, well, dead because of this blatantly false premise. Due to their carelessness in leaving her young son Jason by himself in the ocean to drown, she kills two of them. But that was the prelude in 1958.

Mrs V is too far gone in 1979 when little Jason, who is already dead, speaks to her and urges her to “Kill, Kill, Kill…Mom, Mom, Mom.” The counsellors she pursues are innocent; their crime was committing it at the wrong time and place. The personal nature of this villain has been discussed by screenwriter Victor Miller. He said, “The campers would be eliminated by the world’s most overbearing (and mad) mother, Mrs Voorhees,” in a 2007 interview, subsequently referring to her as “the mother I never had.”

A significant year for Williamson was 1997. Along with I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2 was also made available. The movie is a conventional slasher and is a loose version of the young adult thriller written by Lois Duncan. Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character Julie and her pals go to the beach late at night to celebrate the Fourth of July. They hit a fisherman with their automobile on the way back and covered it up out of fear. He comes back as the anniversary draws near a year later. Julie discovers a young man’s body washed up ashore close to their hit-and-run while trying to conduct an investigation. It’s a red herring, though. For surviving the vehicle accident that claimed the life of his daughter, Ben Willis (Muse Watson) killed the young man.

To paraphrase Confucius, “Seek revenge and you should dig two graves,” this near miss would be poetic justice. Willis decides to commit further mayhem with his dependable hook while surviving just on spite. In contrast to Mrs Loomis, but similar to Mrs Voorhees, Ben Willis isn’t revealed until the conclusion. When Julie believes Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is the murderer, he saves her. He had the grizzled, rugged aspect of a grandfather bear. It’s unfortunate for Julie that it transforms so readily into a violent man since it shows how vengeful he’s become. He leads Julie onto a yacht that is essentially a shrine to Susie Willis, who is now deceased. It’s known as the Sweet Susie, and Julie discovers a room filled with memories of his daughter on one wall and newspaper clippings and images of his victims on the other. Grief and contempt are all that the fisherman has left. Willis remarks, “Kids like you ought to be out having fun.” Running people over while drinking and partying. escaping punishment for murder. things of that nature.

Muse In an interview with Vulture, Watson discussed how he attempted to shape the character, recalling the question he posed while filming, “This whole thing is about my daughter. Could you please post some photos of my daughter and me fishing on the boat? Despite Watson’s opinion that it was a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, it was added. “I recognise that it’s a horror film, but all they wanted was for me to play the bad guy. But I was attempting to give this character some nuance and truth. I had hoped they would show a little more of that, like the three-second-long images of my daughter.

Parker (Gideon Adlon) and Miri (Bethlehem Million) in the movie Sick move to a remote cabin, the ideal location to pass the required two-week quarantine in April 2020. When a figure in a mask attack, their escape becomes a house invasion. It’s a whole freaking family of killers, not just one! Williamson pays homage to Friday the 13th once more by referring to Jane Adams’ character Pamela and her husband Jason (Marc Menchaca) as Pamela and Pamela, respectively. Pamela is in charge of what transpires. These parents and their kids accuse those responsible for another youngster dying from a fatal COVID illness. Parker, their main target, insists she isn’t ill until a nasal swab test reveals otherwise. She is symptom-free and optimistic.

Adams has the opportunity to develop a character with little on-screen time, like Metcalf and Watson. She applies pressure to her head as though she has a migraine on the opposite side of her skull because she feels anxious and worn out. Pamela acts in the last possible way when the plan fails. Fueled by loss and hatred, she swings an axe at Parker while yelling at the girl. It’s clear how she plans to get away with the murders. “Reckless girls can spark reckless fires that destroy the home.” Pamela’s horrible, noble death by fire is entirely fitting. Pamela’s dash while on fire deserves praise from the stunt performer; it may compete with Mrs Voorhees’ slow-motion mutilation.

Even though it may be twisted, these bad guys provide parenting. Even if it’s horrifying, as slasher films often are, they are still trying to impart a message. Cotton (Liev Schreiber) spends most of Scream 2 desperately attempting to clear his name in the eyes of the public after Sidney falsely accuses him of her mother’s murder. It makes sense that Sidney wants to stay away from him; after all, she didn’t want the wrong murderer to be imprisoned on purpose. During a confrontation, Mrs Loomis tries to take advantage of their strained relationship, pressing Sidney to accept her assistance in clearing Cotton’s name.

Ben Willis is an excellent example of the dangers of driving carelessly. I’m an expert on “accidents,” so let me offer you some guidance. “When you leave a man for dead, you make sure he’s really dead,” howls Willis. Ray and Julie hear this but don’t pay attention. Instead of being concerned that his body hasn’t been found, they move on to live in delusion. It’s inevitable when the message emerges in the final seconds, “I Still Know!”

Real-world frustrations contribute to Pamela’s motivations in Sick. Why can’t everyone simply don a mask? In order to prevent giving her father COVID, Miri wanted to be cautious about safety precautions. Miri’s plan is effectively put on hold by Parker’s ignorance about her asymptomatic condition. Neither of the girls would have known if Pamela’s nasal swab test hadn’t been performed. Kevin Williamson holds Mrs Loomis, Ben Willis, and Pamela accountable for their severe actions despite any shortcomings these final females may have, no matter how big or small. No amount of bloodshed will bring lost loved ones back. These parents are not the vigilantes they deceive themselves into believing they are.

  • The lead cast conducted their first public event on Monday.
  • The film was released on January 25 and enjoyed a five-day long weekend.
  • On Monday, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh called Pathaan box office.

Pathaan, directed by Siddharth Anand, slowed down a little on its opening Monday but still managed to bring in over $25 million net in Hindi. Along with Dimple Kapadia, Ashutosh Rana, and others, it features Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham in the key roles. On Monday, the main cast held their first public event where they discussed the movie’s popularity, its sequel, and other topics.

The movie has now made roughly 296 crore in Hindi, indicating that on Tuesday it will surpass the 300 crore mark. On January 25, the movie was released, and a five-day long weekend followed (though Friday was a non-holiday). In India, the Hindi version’s debut brought in 55 crore rupees

The movie brought in 25 crore net. It alludes to the Hindi version’s opening weekend grossing 350 crore. The picture is expected to break the all-time box office record there in its original version in just seven or eight days, according to the report, which also stated that the outside market held up quite well on Monday.

Shah Rukh Khan said, “We are all extremely grateful to the audience and media for supporting the film so much in spite of the fact that there might have been things that would have curtailed the happy release of the film. There were times when we had to call people and ask them to please let us release our film peacefully. Film watching and filmmaking is an experience of love and I want to thank all the people who helped us release this film for the people.”

Wagner commander describes front-line cruelty and incompetence

  • Andrei Medvedev is looking for asylum in Norway after crossing the northern border from Russia.
  • He says Wagner soldiers were pushed into battle with minimal guidance and brutally treated.
  • Two convicts who refused to fight were shot in front of everyone and buried in their trenches.

In an exclusive  interview on Monday, a former Wagner mercenary claimed that the cruelty he experienced in Ukraine was what ultimately motivated him to desert.

Andrei Medvedev told  Anderson Cooper from Oslo, Norway, where he is looking for asylum after crossing Norway’s northern border from Russia, that Wagner soldiers were frequently pushed into battle with minimal guidance and that the company’s treatment of unwilling recruits was brutal.

He claims that they would round up non-combatants and shoot them in front of visitors. Two convicts who refused to engage in combat were brought in, shot in front of everyone, and buried right there in the trenches dug by the trainees.

Wagner has not responded to a request for comment, and  has been unable to independently confirm Wagner’s account.

The 26-year-old joined Wagner as a volunteer and claims to have previously served in the Russian military. Less than ten days after committing to his service in July 2021, he travelled into Ukraine to serve close to Bakhmut, the frontline city in the Donetsk region. The mercenary organization has become an important participant in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Dmitry Utkin and Russian millionaire Yevgeny Prigozhin, the group’s founders, are who Medvedev claimed he directly reported to.

He refers to Prigozhin as “the devil.” If he was a Russian hero, he would have taken a gun and run with the soldiers,” Medvedev said.

Medvedev had previously served in his company, according to Prigozhin, who also stated that he “should have been prosecuted for trying to torture inmates.”

According to Medvedev, he did not wish to remark on his own actions while fighting in Ukraine.

According to Medvedev, Wagner’s tactical plan was nonexistent, and the forces made up plans as they went along.

“There were zero effective strategies. We recently received orders regarding the location of the enemy. There were no clear directives about how we were to conduct ourselves. We simply laid out our step-by-step plan of action. What kind of shifts would we work, who would fire first? Our issue was how things would turn out, the man added.

In a risky defection that he claims saw him avoid capture “at least ten times” and avoid Russian authorities’ guns, Medvedev spoke to from Oslo. He claimed that he entered Norway by flying over an icy lake while wearing white camouflage to blend in.

After seeing soldiers being used as cannon fodder on the sixth day of his deployment in Ukraine, he decided he did not want to serve there again.

When convicts were permitted to join, the number of soldiers under his charge increased from the initial 10 men, according to him. “More dead bodies were discovered, and people kept pouring in. I managed to control a sizable number of people in the end,” he claimed. “I was unable to count them all. They were moving around constantly. More dead bodies, more prisoners, more prisoners, more dead bodies.

According to advocacy groups, when inmates recruited, they were promised that if they perished in battle, their families would get a payout of five million rubles ($71,000).

However, Medvedev claimed that in practice “nobody wanted to pay that kind of money.” Many Russians who perished in battle in Ukraine, he claimed, were “simply labeled missing.”

During the interview, Medvedev became emotional at times and told  that he observed bravery on both sides of the conflict.

I observed bravery on both sides, both our boys and the Ukrainian side. I simply want people to be aware of that, he said.

In order to assist in prosecuting Prigozhin and Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said, he wishes to immediately relate his experience.

The people in Russia will rise up sooner or later, the propaganda will lose its effectiveness, and all of our leaders will be up for grabs. A new leader will then arise.

Wagner is frequently referred to as Putin’s undercover soldiers. Since its founding in 2014, it has increased its global influence and has been charged with war crimes in Africa, Syria, and the Ukraine.

When asked if he worries about what happened to another Wagner defector, Yevgeny Nuzhin, who was killed with a sledgehammer in front of the camera, Medvedev responded that Nuzhin’s passing gave him the confidence to go.

I would just say that it strengthened my resolve to depart, he said.

‘Fremont’ cast & director discuss women of Afghanistan & refugees

  • Fremont, a Sundance film by director Babak Jalali.
  • Fremont is an intimate, endearing, and melancholy picture of loneliness.
  • It is a restless immigrant story that conveys a sense of longing for a home left behind.

Fremont, a Sundance film by director Babak Jalali, is a restless immigrant story that beautifully conveys the human desire for connection and a sense of longing for a home left behind. Fremont is an intimate, endearing, and melancholy picture of loneliness and people forgotten by the country they served. It was shot in stark black and white and frequently centres on the movie’s focus, Donya, who is played by Anaita Wali Zada in her screen debut.

Donya is a refugee who resides in a tiny Afghan neighbourhood in the Bay Area. She worked as an interpreter for US troops before fleeing to America with her family to escape the Taliban. Donya has little money, no insurance, no family, or friends despite working at a factory that neatly packages greetings into fortune cookies. Donya visits a psychiatrist to get prescription sleeping medications since her guilt keeps her awake at night (Gregg Turkington). They start a quest to unpack some of Donya’s enormous baggage when the doctor maintains he needs a few more sessions with her before prescribing. Jeremy Allen White from The Bear also appears in Fremont as Daniel, a mechanic with whom Donya develops a bond.

Jalali, Zada, and Turkington visited the Collider Studio in Park City after the Sundance premiere of Fremont. Zada describes how she went from working as a journalist in Afghanistan to having a major role in a Sundance film while speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub. Jalali explains how the black-and-white technique was used, the way by which he and cinematographer Laura Valladao framed shots, and how the cast and crew made Fremont possible on an independent film budget and timeline. He also discusses the motivation for the story of Fremont. Turkington talks about his “erratic, weird” persona and praises his co-star Zada for their on-screen chemistry. You may view the interview in the video up top or scroll down to read the whole transcript.

Collider says: “The reason I get to be here today is to talk to the people behind Fremont, and I really want to give you congratulations and say how much I enjoyed your movie. Most people who are watching this interview right now will have not seen the film yet so how have you been describing it to friends and family?”

Babak Jalali says: “Thank you for having us here. To friends and family, to anyone, it’s a story about a young Afghan woman who used to work as a translator for the US military, and has recently moved to the Bay Area and lives in the city of Fremont, which is right outside San Francisco, and by day works in a Chinese fortune cookie factory. It’s about someone restarting their life, a stranger in a strange land.”

Anaita was asked, “Anaita, you have never made a film before, and I really want to know how you got involved in this, and what the experience was like being front and centre in a movie.”

Anaita says: “Thank you so much. Yes, that was my first time acting in a movie. First, I received an email from one of my friends, and I sent an email to Babak, and we had so many Zoom [calls]. After that we decided to work together. Actually, he decided to work with me [laughs].”

While laughing she says, “I was going to say, it was probably his decision.”

Zada says: “Yeah, exactly.

What was it like, the experience of making a movie compared to what you thought it would be?”

Zada continued: “I have to say, I worked as a journalist in Afghanistan for two years, so I had experience in front of [the] camera and microphone, so it was, for me, easy to be in front of cameras. But working with the cast and film crew and director was like the first time. I enjoyed it and I learned a lot from it, and also, from Daniel’s character.

You play an integral part in this film. Can you talk about who you play and what it was about this part that said, ‘I want to do this?'”

Gregg added: “Well, I play a doctor, a psychiatrist, who’s – I’ve heard somebody call him eccentric recently, which was maybe a kinder description than I’ve been using, what I’ve been telling people about it. But yeah, just an oddball psychiatrist. I guess one of these people that, probably, when he started in the profession was quite good, but has maybe gone to seed over the years.

Basically, when Babak reached out and I read the script, I was just excited to have been asked, you know, as opposed to like when I got the script to audition for the Elmer Fudd movie. No. But this, I mean it’s a beautiful, beautifully written script and it’s kind of a dream, really, to get something like that and be offered a role in it when the quality is glaring from the get-go.”

After a long talk Jalali added, “100%. One of the things that I appreciate is that, there are a lot of people who helped America in Afghanistan that have been brought over to America, and I don’t want to say that they’re forgotten about, but they’re forgotten about. Was that one of the reasons why you felt compelled to tell this story?”

‘Originally, when I heard about translators living in Fremont, that’s what drew my attention because of the way they were living. They had been forgotten about, neglected, and things like that. The original idea of doing a film about a translator stemmed from that, and I found it shocking, but the story sort of changed. The reality is that yes, there are people who risked their lives for America over there and once they came here, they were abandoned, which is something that’s often repeated in history.’

Zada in the end added: “Thank you so much. I just want to add a little thing. Don’t forget about Afghanistan, about the women of Afghanistan, stay with them, talk about them, remember them, and what’s going on there. They have lost their rights.”

Mosque attack in Pakistan results in over 60 fatalities

Pakistan
  • Rescue operations are underway in the mosque, which is situated inside a police compound.
  • The mosque is mostly attended by law enforcement officials.
  • At least 61 people were killed and about 157 injured.

According to Peshawar Police Chief Mohammad Aijaz Khan, a horrific bomb in a mosque on Monday in the northwest Pakistani city of Peshawar resulted in at least 61 fatalities and about 157 injuries.

The mosque, which is located inside a police compound and is mostly used by law enforcement personnel, is currently the scene of rescue operations.

The event inside the Police Lines Mosque was “possibly a suicide attack,” Peshawar police chief Khan stated in a statement to CNN, echoing Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

In a statement, Sharif stated that “hitting the House of Allah is proof that the attackers have nothing to do with Islam” and that “the savage death of Muslims prostrating before Allah is against the principles of the Quran.”

The prime minister said, “Terrorists want to instill terror by targeting people who carry out the responsibility of defending Pakistan.

All mention of those who oppose Pakistan will be removed from the record.

In order to reestablish peace and order in the northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where Peshawar is situated, a “complete strategy” is under development, Sharif added.

Concerning the perpetrator of the incident, conflicting information has surfaced. Muhammad Khorasani, a Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, denied any involvement in the assault.

We believe it is important to make it clear that Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan is unrelated to the Peshawar event. Any action in mosques, madrasas, funeral grounds, and other sacred locations is illegal, according to our laws and general constitution, Khorasani said in a statement late Monday.

Sarbakaf Mohmand and Omar Mukaram Khurasani, two TTP officials who had previously claimed the explosion was “revenge” for the murder of TTP militant Khalid Khorasani last year, were not addressed by him.

An international terrorist group with operations in both Afghanistan and Pakistan is the TTP, according to the US.

Authorities in Pakistan have not verified either claim but maintain that an investigation is ongoing.

‘You can’t underestimate the resolve of our people’

Following the fatal explosion, Prime Minister Sharif rushed to Peshawar and went to Lady Reading Hospital to meet the injured, according to his office.

“I recently came back from Peshawar. It is impossible to fathom the magnitude of the human catastrophe. This can only be described as an assault on Pakistan. The country is experiencing intense grief. Terrorism is without a doubt the biggest threat to our national security, Sharif wrote on Twitter.

He continued, “My message to those responsible for today’s abhorrent crime is that you can’t underestimate the tenacity of our people.

Imran Khan, a former leader of Pakistan, also denounced the explosion in a tweet, writing that “it is essential we strengthen our information collection & adequately equip our police forces to face the growing menace of terrorism.”

Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf holds the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkwa.

The TTP and other militant groups have repeatedly launched attacks in the city of Peshawar, which is situated on the outskirts of Pakistan’s tribal regions that border Afghanistan.

In March 2022, a Shia mosque in Peshawar was attacked, according to the Islamic State (ISIS). At least 61 persons were killed and 196 were injured in that explosion.

The incident on Monday has not yet been addressed by Muhammad Khurasani, the TTP’s central spokesman.

‘We Have A Ghost’: Release Date, Cast, And Other Details

We Have a Ghost
  • ‘We have a Ghost’ is a film written and directed by Christopher Landon and others.
  • It is based on the short tale Ernest by Geoff Manaugh.
  • The story revolves around a little boy named Kevin.

‘We have a Ghost‘, a film written and directed by Christopher Landon and starring Anthony Mackie and Jennifer Coolidge among many others, is based on the short tale Ernest by Geoff Manaugh.

David Harbour seems to be having a lot of success portraying fanciful characters, from a swashbuckling Santa in Violent Night to a welcoming local ghost in We Have a Ghost. We can’t wait to see the Stranger Things actor in his new role as the main ghost named Ernest in the upcoming horror comedy.

The story revolves around a little boy named Kevin who becomes famous on social media after finding a ghost in the attic of his new home. However, when Kevin tries to delve into Ernest’s background and attempt to learn what transpired to him, they rapidly become CIA targets.

This Netflix original Supernatural Comedy film, set for release in February, is ideal for an enjoyable and comfortable movie night. Check out the trailer, storyline, release date, cast and crew, and everything else we currently know about We Have a Ghost to learn more about the upcoming film.

On and beginning Friday, February 24, 2023, We Have a Ghost will release and be streamable only on Netflix.

We Have a Ghost’s official trailer, which Netflix released on January 26, 2023, contains several action-adventure moments and is sure to bring back memories of old-fashioned ghost stories. It’s possible to compare it to Casper and Ghost Hunters, with the exception that the CIA is the hunter and the ghost is an older, balding man wearing a bowling shirt rather than a charming young boy.

The two-and-a-half-minute clip summarises the main plot points of the film, such as the introduction of the main characters and how they meet Ernest, among other things. Usually, the live protagonists in ghost movies appear to be frightened by the spirit’s presence, but since We Have a Ghost is a comedy, the characters seem to be making the most of their new circumstances and becoming an internet phenomenon.

Ernest played by Harbour appears to be a straightforward ghost confined in the attic who, rather than running after people, appears to be afraid of them. Ernest’s inability to communicate is also revealed in the trailer, adding to the character’s fascination. It will be interesting to watch how Ernest, played by Harbour, tells his tale to his new friends without any language (unless it is in flashbacks).

The movie is anticipated to be plenty of comedic action, as the video demonstrates, with Ernest travelling in a car with the kids, running through walls, etc. We Have a Ghost appears to be a humorous and enjoyable family production where some of Hollywood’s most well-known personalities will ride a ghost on a rollercoaster.

We Have a Ghost stars Harbour and Mackie in the lead roles, as well as Jahi Di’Allo Winston from Queen & Slim, Tig Notaro from Army of the Dead, Jennifer Coolidge from White Lotus, and Erica Ash from Survivor’s Remorse.

Along with Steve Coulter, other prominent actors include Isabella Russo (Crashing), Niles Fitch (Atypical), Faith Ford (Hope & Faith), and Steve Coulter (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law).

Harbour portrays Ernest, the house’s resident ghost, who the Presley family moves into, as was previously mentioned. The MCU film Thunderbolts and Gran Turismo will be Harbour’s upcoming projects.

Anthony Mackie, who starred in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, plays Frank Presley, the new owner of the mansion where Ernest has been residing. In addition to Elevation, Desert Warrior, and Joe & Anthony Russo’s The Electric State, Mackie is scheduled to act in three more films this year.

Iranian protest movement’s hero was a boxer with barbed-cheeks

Iranian
  • Cell phone footage shows a bare-chested man wielding a knife.
  • He is encircled by about a dozen regime forces armed with guns.
  •  Morovati has become a hero to supporters of Iran’s protest movement.

The video went viral right away. A bare-chested man carrying a knife was seen in cell phone film at anti-government demonstrations in Iran’s Kurdish city of Sanandaj, surrounded by about a dozen armed regime security personnel.

Security guards jumped back and forth with every move the demonstrator made, appearing to alternately take turns gently striking their batons at him, some even shooting their weapons at him.

He said that after being shot many times at close range, the protester eventually dropped to his knees.

Ashkan Morovati, a Kurdish Iranian boxer who has since gained notoriety among supporters of Iran’s protest movement, was given his first public appearance.

The background to the video, which was recorded in late October, was described by Morovati in an exclusive interview with CNN. He said that in the moments prior to the on-camera altercation, he had spoken with security personnel and requested that they approach protesters clamoring for the overthrow of the nation’s iron-fisted clerical dictatorship with more restraint.

According to Morovati, “I went there to tell them to stand by the people and create compromises with them.” “You are ruthlessly oppressing people, and this is below humanity.”

Morovati claims that when he was speaking to them, the security personnel suddenly attacked, pelting him with batons and pepper spray before opening fire. He claims that he simply used his knife to defend himself, but it was ineffective.

“They shot me twice in both legs with military-grade bullets after shooting me once with a shotgun from a very close distance.”

When CNN requested comment from Iranian authorities, they did not provide it.

Morovati was detained and later charged with “waging war against God,” also known as “moharebeh,” which carries a death sentence and is a charge that the Iranian administration frequently employs to punish political demonstrators in the nation.

He might have lost his life in the ordeal. Instead, it prompted his risky flight from Iran.

Clinging to life

When it started in the middle of September, Iran’s statewide revolt shook the nation and presented the ruling clerical class with its worst domestic danger in more than a decade. Numerous acts of disobedience – and even violence – against the formidable Basij, a voluntary paramilitary organisation that serves as the core of the Islamic Republic’s security system, were committed in response to widespread protests that cut through the regime’s conservative support base. A wall of dread seemed to have crumbled under the weight of the youthful and incensed demonstrators.

Four months later, however, a mounting wave of violence against protestors, including scores of execution sentences given to demonstrators, has quelled Iran’s demonstrations but not the underlying popular rage. Recent executions are the result of an increasingly brutal response that included shooting demonstrators, mass arrests, physical and sexual assault, and more.

Morovati claims that before leaving Iran for good, he died numerous times. He claims that even after his detention, regime agents continued to abuse him and even re-shoot him until they were positive he wouldn’t make it.

“They shot me from extremely close range with a shotgun when they were taking me to the hospital, as if it were a coup de grace,” says Morovati. He thinks the police just brought him to the hospital because they were sure he would pass away.

Yet he survived.

He was brought to the ICU at Kowsar Hospital in Sanandaj, where he received care from many medical professionals, including surgeon Dr. Iman Navabi.

According to specialists at the hospital, Morovati had 200 additional shotgun pellets in his body, some of which had caused catastrophic injuries, including a severed artery in his leg and a lung pierced by the projectiles.

Despite his grave circumstances, he somehow survived.

Do you feel 100%? In a video of Morovati following surgery that was shared on his Instagram, Navabi commanded, “Open your eyes. Morovati, a man of substantial figure, was lying on a stretcher with his feet protruding from the front, and Navabi towered over him. In hospital gowns, his concerned parents sat next to him.

Ashkan Morovati is okay, the procedure was successful, his status is stable, he is not in danger, he is in the ICU right now, and there is no need to be concerned, Navabi stated in the caption of his video.

According to the Norway-registered Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, numerous Iranian physicians and healthcare professionals have been detained as retaliation for providing medical care to demonstrators. After treating Morovati, Navabi himself was detained in early December. Terry Beech, a Canadian member of parliament, claims that he was ultimately released.

The Kurdish boxer, who had previously been shown lifting weights, punching, and sprinting in films uploaded to his social media accounts, spent about a month resting in a hospital bed.

Then, he claims that in the early hours of November 23, regime forces stormed the hospital and dragged him out.

The scene, according to Morovati, was “about 10 plainclothes operatives came along with around 20 armed soldiers who had entirely taken over the hospital, and grabbed me from the isolated ICU room.” “They hauled me to prison in that state because they had a court order to shoot anyone who approached to interfere.”

He claims that the suffering he felt in prison from his exposed wounds was intolerable.

Morovati claims that the jail officials ignored his calls for help when he was in pain and that he was no longer given continuous oxygen from an oxygen tank or constantly changed bandages for his wounds as he had been in the hospital.

About his nearly ten days in jail, Morovati adds, “I had to locate salt and apply them on my wounds to disinfect my wound just a little bit. They paid no heed to how I was feeling.

He had to rely on other inmates to lend him their painkillers.

After ten days, the prison staff agreed to move Morovati to an army hospital so that he could receive medical care after being pushed by his family and Kowsar Hospital doctors to do so in the court.

Morovati describes his six-day stay at the facility: “I was there in that situation with both my wrists and feet shackled to the bed.” He claims that when he was transported to a facility with superior resources, army physicians suggested that he was on the verge of death.

Morovati once more received a respite under the insistence of her family and doctor.

He recalls, “They gave me 20 days to get myself to a good hospital.”

During this period, the judiciary accused him of moharebe without holding a hearing or interrogating him. And it was at just this moment that Morovati made his spectacular escape.

Morovati chose to leave the nation by traveling overland rather than visiting a hospital. Morovati claims, “While seriously bleeding and in a very, very bad condition, I got out of the nation across mountains and deserts.”

He claims that he is presently at a safe area, outside of Iran’s borders, thanks to the assistance of friends.

According to Morovati, “many Iranians are dying to leave the nation and tell the world the truth.” “Our sole transgression is that we call for freedom, democracy, and the equality of women and men. Our crime was shouting “Woman, Life, Freedom.”

Morovati refuted the claim that Iranians are afraid in light of the recent crackdown on protestors by citing the protesters’ catchphrase, “Any one person who is killed, there are a thousand people in favor of them.”

Morovati asserts, “I don’t think people are terrified. “People [will] [continue to] stand fiercely while they are still standing,”

Despite the fact that Morovati hasn’t received medical care since making his getaway and that the leg that was shot is numb, he manages. He claims it’s very difficult for him to accept that, as a result of his injuries, he will be unable to pursue boxing as a career, but his current hopes are for a different outcome.

Morovati quickly replies that he doesn’t feel safe and that he is in pain when asked about his safety and any physical discomfort he may be experiencing. The liberation of Iran is, he swiftly adds, “the most important thing for me right now.”

I will sacrifice my life for my people, for my country, Iran, not once, but a thousand times, he continued.
