Thailand offers visitors from the Gulf countries to stay longer

Visitors
  • Thailand has decided to extend the length of stay for visitors from the Gulf countries.
  • The visa will be extended to 45 days instead of 30 days.
  • It is not clear if the stay extension applies to Gulf nationals only, or to expatriates in the Gulf countries as well.

Cairo: As part of its full reopening to tourism, Thailand has decided to extend the length of stay for visitors from the Gulf countries, Saudi media reported, citing Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Bangkok.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced that the stay period for tourists from visa-free countries, including Gulf countries, will be extended to 45 days instead of 30 days as of March 31, and to 30 days instead of 15 for those eligible for visa on arrival.

Saudi Arabia and Thailand agreed last year to fully restore diplomatic ties and exchange ambassadors for the first time in nearly 32 years.

The decision was reached during Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-historic cha’s official visit to Riyadh, where he met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

Prince Mohammad paid an official visit to Thailand in November.

TAT stated earlier this month that Thailand will continue to welcome all international tourists under the fully reopened-to-tourism policy that was implemented last October.

Thailand is also offering visitors a longer period of stay as part of its full reopening to tourism, according to TAT.

The period of stay for tourists from visa-exempt countries/territories is extended to 45 days (from 30 days) until 31 March 2023, and to 30 days (from 15 days) for those eligible for a visa on arrival.

“International travelers arriving in Thailand are not required to show proof of vaccination,” Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul said, according to TAT.

India: Air India fined for passenger’s mid-flight urination

Air India
  •  Air India is fined $37,000 for not handling incidents professionally.
  • The man allegedly relieved himself on the 72-year-old woman.
  • The man was allowed to disembark as usual, and no immediate action was taken.

NEW DELHI: Indian media reported that Air India was fined $ 37,000 for its handling of an incident in which a drunk senior US bank executive was accused of urinating on a female passenger.

On a November 26 flight from New York to New Delhi, the man allegedly relieved himself on the 72-year-old woman seated in business class, an incident dubbed “peegate” by the media.

According to reports on Friday and Saturday, the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation fined Air India’s director of in-flight services 300,000 rupees in addition to the carrier’s penalty of three million rupees ($37,000).

The pilot’s license was also suspended for three months for “failing to discharge his duties.”

The banker, Indian national Shankar Mishra, was allowed to disembark as usual. No immediate action was taken.

After the story was widely publicized in Indian media, police arrested Mishra.

US bank Wells Fargo fired him from his job as vice president of its Indian operations after the “deeply disturbing” allegations.

Air India was heavily chastised for how it handled the woman’s complaint.  The airline’s CEO was forced to issue an apology.

“Air India acknowledges that it could have handled these matters better, both in the air and on the ground, and is committed to taking action,” chief executive Campbell Wilson said.

The case is the latest embarrassing incident to be reported in India’s booming airline sector in recent months.

Javed Akhtar reveals his reasons for leaving Salim Khan’s employ

Javed Akhtar
  • Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan worked together on some of the most iconic Bollywood films.
  • Javed spoke about their partnership.
  • How Salim had encouraged him to become a screenwriter in the first place.

Screenwriters Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar collaborated on some of the most well-known Bollywood movies, including Sholay, Don, Deewaar, and Zanjeer, among many more. In a recent interview, Javed discussed their collaboration and how Salim had first urged him to pursue a career as a screenwriter. The lyricist also discussed how they split up after more than ten years of collaboration.

Javed also said that he intended to be a film director before becoming a writer and lyricist in the latest interview. Javed claimed that he met Salim, the father of actor Salman Khan while working as an assistant director and dialogue writer on the 1966 movie Sarhadi Lutera. Salim has a minor part to play in the movie.

Salim Saab unn chand logo mein se the jo mujhe boht encourage karte the, says Javed Akhtar about his connection with Salim Khan. Salim was one of the few who would support me. Agar shayad main kahin aur reh raha hota toh itni mulaqat na hoti unse lekin ab paas mein mujhe mil gaya kamra toh main aksar chala jata tha. We might not have interacted as frequently if I had been living somewhere else, but I was able to get a room near his house.

Javed elaborated on his relationship with Salim Khan by recalling how and why their working relationship ended. He claimed that as soon as they achieved prosperity, their individual lives grew to be stronger than their relationship.

“Shuru mein jab hum nakaam log the, struggle kar rahe the, toh bilkul ek the. Koi humare aur dost nahi the, hum hi baith ke subah se shaam tak kaam karte the. Shaam ko bhi saath the, raat ko khana bhi saath hota tha. 24 mein se 15-16 hours toh saath hi hote the… Jab kamyabi ayi, toh naye naye log zindagi mein ana shuru ho gaye aur voh circle dheere dheere alag ho gaye. Toh voh mental rapport tha humara, voh toot gaya. Toh fir woh kaam nahi ho sakta tha (In our struggling days, we were one tea. We did not have any other friends, we would work together from morning till evening. We would even have meals together. Out of 24 hours, we would spend 15-16 hours with each other. But as we became successful, new people came into our lives and our friend’s circle got separated. The mental rapport we had was broken. We could no longer work as a team).”

Salim-Javed, as they came to be called, is arguably one of the most significant and potent authors in the history of Hindi cinema, and it was their 1973 picture Zanjeer that popularized the stereotype of the “angry young man” that appeared in many of Amitabh Bachchan’s films from the 1970s and 1980s. Sholay, a 1975 film by Salim-Javed, is still regarded as one of India’s most famous movies.

Ukraine honours minister, officials killed in helicopter crash

Helicopter crash
  • Seven senior Interior Ministry officials were killed in a helicopter crash earlier this week.
  • The cause of the crash is still being investigated by authorities.
  • President Volodymyr Zelensky attended a memorial service on Saturday.

KYIV  – A tearful Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended a memorial service on Saturday to remember seven senior Interior Ministry officials killed in a helicopter crash earlier this week, a new blow to a country already reeling from the loss of many wars dead.

Denys Monastyrskyi, his deputy, and five other high-ranking ministry officials were killed when their French-made Super Puma helicopter crashed into a nursery on Kyiv’s eastern outskirts on Wednesday.

In the crash, seven more people were killed, including one child. The cause of the crash is still being investigated by authorities.

“The indescribable sadness is covering the soul,” Zelensky wrote on Saturday in a Telegram post. “Every day, Ukraine loses its best sons and daughters.” Inside the hulking Ukrainian House cultural center in central Kyiv, Zelensky and his wife, Olena Zelenska, paid their respects to the victim’s relatives. Outside, a line of mourners snaked its way toward Independence Square.

Meanwhile, Germany faced a strong backlash from allies on Saturday for refusing to supply Ukraine with its famed Leopard tanks to help it fight Russia in the nearly year-long conflict.

On Friday, more than 50 countries agreed to provide Kyiv with billions of dollars in military hardware, including enough armoured vehicles and ammunition to push back Russian forces.

However, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius told reporters on the sidelines of the event at the US Ramstein Air Base that “we still cannot say when a decision will be taken, and what the decision will be when it comes to the Leopard tank.”

The former prime minister said that the problems will not be solved if they do not recognize the constitution. The solution to all the problems of the country is within the constitution.

Philippines to priorities economic assistance over security

Philippines
  • China and the Philippines signed 14 bilateral treaties in the fields of industry, agriculture, and tourism.
  • China’s exports to the Philippines increased at a 20% annual rate.
  • The Philippines hopes that Chinese investments will help fund its “Build Build Build” program.

Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. returned home from a three-day visit to China with $22.8 billion in trade and investment deals. It was in keeping with his promise before leaving for Beijing to return “with a harvest of agreements and investments” to strengthen the Philippines’ economic foundations.

Marcos inherited a strong relationship with China from his late father, President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., who was one of the first US allies to abandon Taipei for Beijing in 1976. The junior had gone to China with his father and met Chairman Mao Zedong. Marcos Jr. recalled the trip, saying he “watched the development of our bilateral ties with great interest and attention.” The current visit, according to him, is intended to “continue that legacy of strengthening the bonds of friendship established between the Filipino and Chinese peoples.”

During his presidential campaign, Marcos openly supported President Rodrigo Duterte’s foreign policy, referring to China as the Philippines’ “strongest partner” and “emphasizing the futility of confrontation and the value of robust economic cooperation with the Asian powerhouse.” Marcos, like Duterte, chose China for his first major overseas trip. Their predecessors had either visited Washington or Tokyo first.

China and the Philippines signed 14 bilateral treaties in the fields of industry, agriculture, and tourism. Investment and funding arrangements for projects undertaken with Chinese assistance are among the other agreements.

How China became the Philippines’ largest trading partner

In recent years, trade between the two countries has thrived. From 2010 to 2017, China’s exports to the Philippines increased at a 20% annual rate, allowing China to surpass Japan as the Philippines’ largest trading partner in 2016. China will be the Philippines’ second-largest export market by 2021. China is also said to have committed to reducing the trade deficit, which is currently in China’s favor, by increasing imports from the Philippines.

Duterte’s election in 2016 improved relations with China, and his visit to Beijing that year resulted in $24 billion in investment and credit line pledges. President Marcos undertook the China trip early in his term to “shift relations into a higher gear”. The Philippines hopes that Chinese investments will help fund its “Build Build Build” program, which aims to improve domestic infrastructure, which is critical for economic growth.

Though Duterte’s presidency was described as a “golden era” in the Philippines, tensions with China emerged near the end of his presidency, when Beijing barred resupply missions to Philippines-owned islands in the South China Sea. Such encounters put his successor, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., under pressure from the military and the public to take a more assertive stance on the South China Sea territorial claims.

Despite Marcos’ promising start, the Philippines’ relations with China may be tested over a number of issues, including inadequate development of major infrastructure projects, disputed claims over the South China Sea, and the nature and extent of Manila’s defence ties with Washington. China is understandably concerned about America’s military presence in its backyard.

The Philippines is in the difficult position of having the most contested claims in the South China Sea with China. To China’s detriment, the Hague arbitration tribunal recognized the Philippines’ claims. Duterte put the ruling on hold in order to benefit from China’s economic relations.

The two sides have attempted to settle their differences several times with little success. Though China prefers individual negotiations with each disputing party, the ten-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), of which the Philippines is a member, has steadfastly negotiated these claims as a group.

Manila’s relations with the United States

In contrast to his predecessor, Marcos Jr. is warming up to the United States. China is keeping a close eye on things. Early in his presidency, US Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken were among the first visitors. The Philippines understands that a US military alliance can provide deterrence to China, but the US lacks the courage or capacity to provide economic support to raise people’s living standards. Raising military stakes at the expense of economic development will harm the Philippines’ chances of revival, as it has done for many other countries. China will closely monitor the proposed defense ties and will withdraw investments if Marcos Jr. is seen to have an unfavorable impact on Chinese interests.

Marcos is well aware that the US has fallen short of expectations on important economic needs of developing countries, and that much of its engagement is limited to military security. Under the guise of ‘freedom of navigation,’ the US has significantly increased its military presence in the region.

According to current trends, the Philippines will continue to pursue a strong economic partnership with China in order to lift people out of poverty.

  • She shared an old family photo with their children Ranbir and Riddhima Kapoor Sahni.
  • Rishi Kapoor died on April 30, 2020, due to a prolonged illness.

On January 22, Neetu and Rishi Kapoor would have commemorated their 43rd wedding anniversary. Neetu celebrated the day by posting an old family photo of their children Riddhima Kapoor Sahni and Ranbir Kapoor. On April 30, 2020, Rishi Kapoor passed away after a protracted illness. Neetu uploaded a picture from Ranbir and Riddhima’s early years on Sunday along with the comment, “Time flies… only memories…,” in memory of her late spouse.

The seasoned actor was dressed in a pair of blue shorts, a white T-shirt, and a hat in the flashback image Neetu shared on Instagram to commemorate her and Rishi’s wedding anniversary. In a photo of their family taken when they were little, Riddhima and Ranbir Kapoor were both wearing casual clothing and headgear. Mickey Mouse appeared on a graphic T-shirt that the late Rishi Kapoor was wearing. The four members of the family smiled for the camera as background fresh pink and white flowers, perhaps from a getaway. Riddhima added several heart emojis to the image. As they left comments on Neetu’s post wishing the pair a happy wedding anniversary, many followers thought of Rishi.

Neetu and Rishi Kapoor wed on January 22, 1980. Ranbir was born two years after Riddhima, the couple’s first child, who was born in September 1980. The 1974 movie Zehreela Insaan served as Rishi and Neetu’s first collaborative effort. When she co-starred in the movie with 22-year-old Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor was just 16 years old. Since since time, the duo has appeared in movies like Do Dooni Char, Besharam, Kabhi Kabhie, Rafoo Chakkar, and Amar Akbar Anthony together.

After suffering leukemia for two years, Rishi Kapoor passed away on April 30, 2020, in Mumbai during the Covid-19 lockdown. He was receiving treatment in New York with Neetu and her family just before he passed away. On April 14, 2022, his son, actor Ranbir Kapoor, tied the knot with Alia Bhatt. Raha Kapoor, the couple’s daughter, was born in November 2022. The daughter of Rishi and Neetu, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, is wed to businessman Bharat Sahni of Delhi, and the pair has a daughter named Samara Sahni.

Next New Zealand PM condemns Jacinda Ardern’s ‘abhorrent’ treatment

Jacinda Ardern's
  • Ardern sparked a national debate about the pressures she faced when she revealed on Thursday.
  • Ardern stated that she was exhausted after leading New Zealand through the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Politicians and other public figures have lined up to criticize Ardern.

New Zealand‘s incoming prime minister, Chris Hipkins, condemned Jacinda Ardern‘s “abhorrent” treatment and vowed on Sunday to protect his own family, three days after her shocked resignation.

Hours after being unanimously elected as the Labour Party’s leader and the country’s next prime minister, Hipkins attacked Ardern’s personal abuse during her more than five years in the top job.

Ardern sparked a national debate about the pressures she faced when she revealed on Thursday that she was stepping down, saying she no longer had “enough in the tank”.

Politicians and other public figures have lined up to criticize Ardern’s “vitriol” as prime minister, particularly on social media, despite the fact that she did not mention it herself.

“The treatment of Jacinda has been utterly abhorrent, particularly by some segments of our society – and they are a small minority,” Hipkins said.

“It does not represent who we are as a country,” said the 44-year-old minister of education and police.

Men have a responsibility to call out such behavior and say, “This is not acceptable,” he said.

The future prime minister, best known for leading a national crackdown on COVID-19 for nearly two years, said he understood that putting himself forward as a leader meant he was “public property”.

“But my family aren’t,” he told reporters.

Hipkins stated that he wanted his six-year-old son and four-year-old daughter to have a “typical Kiwi kid life,” adding that his amicable divorce from his wife was his own business.

“I have seen the enormous scrutiny and pressure placed on Jacinda and her family and so my response will be to keep my family completely out of the spotlight,” he said.

‘Humbling’

Ardern stated that she was exhausted after leading New Zealand through the COVID-19 pandemic, the country’s deadliest terror attack, and a volcanic eruption.

“I am human. We give as much as we can for as long as we can and then it’s time,” the 42-year-old leader said.

Hipkins stated that after Ardern formally steps down, he will be sworn in as the country’s 41st prime minister by the governor general on Wednesday.

Hipkins stated that New Zealand will shift its focus from COVID-19 to economic development under his leadership.

The rising cost of living, rising inflation, and labor shortages have all been blamed for Labour’s decline in the polls since 2020, which has now been surpassed by the center-right National Party opposition.

“COVID-19 and the global pandemic caused a public health emergency. It has now created an economic one, and that is where my government’s attention will be directed “Hipkins explained.

The next leader of New Zealand has also promised to address rising crime rates.

“We know we’ve got more work to do when it comes to re-engaging young people, to tackle the underlying causes of criminal offending.”

Carmel Sepuloni, the country’s first deputy prime minister of Pacific Island descent, will be appointed by Hipkins.

Sepuloni, 46, was elected to parliament in 2008 and has served as Minister of Social Development since 2017.

Sepuloni stated that her father, who is of Samoan and Tongan descent, came to New Zealand in 1964 to work on the railways.

“It’s very difficult to comprehend” that his daughter would become New Zealand’s deputy prime minister, she said.

“I want to recognize the importance of this for our Pacific community.”
