Germany signs deal to return Benin bronzes to Nigeria

Benin bronzes
  • Germany has around 1,100 of the 16th- to 18th-century artefacts, split between some 20 museums.
  • Thousands of Benin bronzes are scattered around European museums after being looted by the British.
  • Nigeria plans to build a museum in Benin City in southern Edo state, where it hopes to house them.

Germany signed an agreement on Friday,  to begin sending hundreds of Benin bronzes back to what is now Nigeria, marking the most significant effort by a European country to return the looted artworks.

After Germany announced last year that it would begin returning the bronzes, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Culture Minister Claudia Roth signed the agreement with their Nigerian counterparts in Berlin.

The first two artworks — the head of a king and a plaque depicting three warriors — were on Friday handed over to representatives from Nigeria.

“Today we have reason to celebrate, because we have reached a historic agreement — the Benin bronzes are returning home,” Baerbock said.

“These pieces are not only magnificent artefacts — they are some of Africa’s greatest treasures. But they are also telling a story of colonial violence,” she said.

Thousands of Benin bronzes, metal plaques and sculptures that once decorated the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin are now scattered around European museums after being looted by the British at the end of the 19th century.

Japan warns on ‘interests’ after Russia gas project decree

Japan
  • Russia transfers operations of key oil and gas project to new Russian company.
  • Japanese government says it is closely examining impact on liquified natural gas imports.
  • Japan’s economy minister says Tokyo will look into alternative suppliers.

Japan’s energy  “interests must not be undermined”, Tokyo said Friday after Moscow issued a decree transferring operations of a key oil and gas project to a new Russian company.

Mitsui and Mitsubishi Corp, both Japanese trading houses, own 12.5 and 10% stakes in the Sakhalin-2 project, respectively, but the future of their investments appear uncertain following Russia’s move.

The decree calls for the establishment of a new Russian operator and requires existing foreign shareholders to apply for the right to participate in the new firm, with Moscow deciding on their inclusion.

Japanese government spokesman Seiji Kihara said Friday morning that Tokyo was “closely examining the impact on liquified natural gas (LNG) imports”.

“Speaking generally, we believe our resource interests must not be undermined,” he added, declining to give further comment.

Later Friday, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the government did not think the decree “will immediately stop LNG imports,” on which Japan is heavily dependent.

“We think we need to carefully monitor how the decree will affect our contract,” he told reporters.

Japan’s economy minister meanwhile said Tokyo would look into alternative suppliers.

“In the mid-to-long term, we will do everything we can to ensure a stable supply of energy, including through alternative procurement from LNG suppliers other than Russia, buying from the spot market, and reducing demand when necessary,” Koichi Hagiuda told journalists.

He said Japan would also look into boosting renewable and nuclear energy, which remains controversial in the country after the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

The Russian decree says the move is a reaction to the “unfriendly actions” of countries that are imposing “restrictive measures” on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

  • The decision came a day after a French court sentenced his guest Salah Abdeslam to life in prison for his role in the attacks.

Abid Aberkane, convicted of assisting the sole surviving jihadist behind the November 2015 Paris attacks by housing him in Brussels, received a three-year suspended sentence from a Belgian court on Thursday.

The decision came a day after a French court sentenced Aberkane’s guest Salah Abdeslam, a 32-year-old Frenchman of Moroccan origin, to life in prison for his role in the Paris attacks, which killed 130 people.

Abdeslam was the only surviving member of the jihadist cell that attacked the French national sports stadium, bars and the Bataclan concert hall in an assault immediately claimed from Syria by the IS group.

He fled to Brussels after the Paris attacks and 14 Belgian-based suspects have been accused of providing support for the cell, including by housing him during his time on the run before his arrest.

Among the defendants, four were acquitted, one was sentenced to community service, and three have been given a delay before sentencing.

Two more defendants are presumed dead after they travelled to fight in Iraq or Syria and were tried in absentia.

They had already been convicted of terrorism in Belgium and received no additional sentence at this trial.

  • He is wanted to face trial for allegedly violating the US Espionage Act by publishing military and diplomatic files.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange filed an appeal against extradition to the United States on Friday, as supporters chastised the British government.

Assange, who turns 51 on Sunday, has been imprisoned in a maximum-security facility since 2019.

Hundreds of people demonstrated outside Britain’s interior ministry on Friday to demand his release, including his wife Stella.

Home Secretary Priti Patel approved the extradition last month, but court officials confirmed to AFP an application to appeal had been received on Friday.

“We’re not at the end of the road here,” Stella Assange, who married the Australian publisher earlier this year, told reporters when Patel announced her decision.

“We’re going to fight this. We’re going to use every appeal avenue.”

Assange is wanted to face trial for allegedly violating the US Espionage Act by publishing military and diplomatic files in 2010, related to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

He could face decades in jail if found guilty, but supporters portray him as a martyr to press freedom after he was taken into UK custody following a years-long stay in Ecuador’s embassy.

“He’s been in prison for telling the truth,” supporter Gloria Wildman, 79, told AFP at Friday’s protest.

“If Julian Assange is not free, neither are we, none of us is free,” she said.

Iran executions more than double in first half of 2022: NGO

Iran
  • From January 1 to June 30, 251 people were hanged in Iran, compared to 117 in the first half of last year.
  • Iran has seen nationwide protests over economic grievances such as the rise in cost of basic staples including bread.
  • Eight prisoners were executed on rape and murder charges on Wednesday alone at the Rajai Shahr prison outside Tehran.

An NGO said Friday that executions in Iran have more than doubled in the first half of 2022, warning that the increase is intended to spread fear during a period of protests.

From January 1 to June 30, 251 people were hanged in Iran, compared to 117 in the first half of last year, according to a report by the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR).

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had expressed concern last month over the rise in executions, with Iran again executing drug offenders in high numbers and many people from ethnic minorities.

Iran has over the last months seen nationwide protests over economic grievances such as the rise in cost of basic staples including bread.

[embedpost slug=”iran-will-maintain-contact-with-eu-after-doha-nuclear-talks-conclude/”]

“There is no doubt that spreading fear to counteract the growing popular anti-regime protests is the main goal of these executions,” IHR founder Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam told AFP.

“Only stronger international reactions and domestic campaigns against the executions can raise the political cost of these executions for the authorities and stop the increasing trend,” he said.

He noted that 137 executions had occurred since the new wave of protests began on May 7. Six women were also executed, according to IHR.

According to IHR, eight prisoners were executed on rape and murder charges on Wednesday alone at the Rajai Shahr prison outside Tehran.
